I have two windows xp computers behind a linksys router. I would like to be able to access one of these computers from a vista computer while on the road. I am looking to purchase a linksys/cisco vpn router BEFSX41 and getting a static ip address. How do I go about this? Do I need specialized software in addition or can this be accomplished without a lot of hassle?
View 4 RepliesI have Vista x64 and I have read threads on this for weeks and can't fix it. I have file sharing/network discovery on, private network, password protection disabled, my shares set to everyone and everyone is on the same workgroup. My problem is that the x64 Vista computer will not see any of the XP (x86 or x64) computers and they can't see it from the Network Neighbourhood. However, if I type the IP address of the XP computers I
can access them. On the XP computers if I type the IP address I get an error that it isn't accessable and I might not have permission. However, if I type \192.168.0.100share or any of the other share names I access it just fine. pinging works too by IP but not by name. If I boot into the x86 install of have of Vista I can access XP computers from Vista and the Vista from XP by name and everything without typing any user names. The only differince between the two aside from x64 and x86 is that x86 isn't patched past SP1 as I don't use it often. Lastly after installing that XP patch I can see the x86 XP computers by name from the network map feature on Vista, still can't access them by name though...
Just returned from holiday and while we were away I changed my laptop network in vista from private to public as advised and the internet worked fine. Now at home I can’t connect to my router, and I get a message saying that the details held on the computer is not the same as the router. Also there is no “customise” function being shown on the network and sharing centre screen to switch back to private network. I’ve tried everything to set up a connection, even a new one, but the same message appears all the time.

View 9 Replies View Relatedmy network connection keeps switching between public and private, despite my configuring it to a private network. Because of this, my PS3 is unable to connect (using laptop as media center to stream data to PS3). We are using a DLINK DIR-615 at the moment. I also have Linksys WRT54GS that I could switch back to, but I had problems with my laptop staying connected with that and we had the Dlink kicking around, so we swapped to see if my laptop would stay connected with it, and so far it has. Or atleast when it switches to "local only", it reconnects right away. I'm trying to stream movies and music to my PS3. But whenever it flips to "public", I can no long stream the files. can stay I it to set as a private network?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI am using a Dell XPS 420. I have been able to transfer files via a private network with no problems until now. I made a share folder with the correct permission. I can transfer any file under 5MB with no errors. If I send a file at 6MB it will process the folder and after 5 min I get this error message:
Network Error... There is a problem accessing C:userpublicetwork testfile name28624.zip.
It says make sure you are connected to the network and try again. Is there a timing issue causing the lost connection? I worked with Dell and since it worked in Jan 08 to reinstall the backup for the Dell Factory settings. I thought I would check with the Windows Vista Community before I do the reinstall. I also have another computer with Windows Vista Ultimate and I can transfer the files with no problem via Hamachi network.
I am running vista home premium on a dell 530 and have just had to restore factory settings due to my user account being corrupted. I have reinstalled all my software and now have realised that it is doing what It has done before in the five months I have had it (after restore to factory settings) which is waking from sleep on it's own. I did find a solution to this on a forum which is to go to device manager / network adapter / intel.... / properties / power management / wake from LAN and uncheck the first two settings "wake on directed packet" and "wake on magic packet". Now as this solves the problem I am confused as to why my "factory settings" have it checked???? Now, immediately after closing the properties window I got a dialogue box saying that a new private network has been detected with a highlighted option to call it local network2... this freaked me out as I have not connected anything to even remotely act as another network and further more there was an ip address in the bar at the top of the dialogue box which I noted (169.254.175.32/255.255.0.0) I would just like to know if this is behaviour of a virus of some sort or something normal beyond my understanding.

I have Vista 64 bit Ultimate w/SP1 installed as the host computer. If I use the 32 bit Vista Ultimate as a Virtual Machine (VM), I have no problems with the network connection or anything else in the VM. If I use the 32 bit Vista Home Premium as a VM, everything works fine except the network connection in the VM. The settings are the same on both.
I wanted to use Home Premium since it is the only one that I have a spare product key number for. Does anyone know of a reason why the network connection will not work with the Home Premium edition over the Ultimate with the exact same VM settings? I hope it's not simply because I have Ultimate installed as the host.
How do you edit a virtual pc hard drive image so that you can add files onto. So that if you have say MS-DOS 7.1 running on virtual pc and want to add SIMCITY 2000 to its virtual hardrive. Then you could run SIMCITY 2000 from dos on windows vista. And once simcity 2000 is added to the virtual hardrive how do I execute SC2000.exe from dos or dos shell.

On a test run, I tried to install WinME on a virtual disk in a folder that was in my normal Vista partition (NTFS), and it didn't get far. I tried placing the WinME virtual disk inside an FAT32 partition, and although I didn't finish the installation process, I got that far, with the WinME instalation screen having popped up and ready for installation. One other thing: Is it possible to place the WinME virtual disk inside a logical FAT32 partition? Or must it be a primary partition?
View 8 Replies View RelatedI just got my Vista 64bit laptop working wireless with my WinXP desktop through a Belkin router. I can transfer files using either PC and can print from the laptop on the two printers connected to the desktop. IOW, I can do everything I need so far.
When I open Vista's Network and Sharing Center on the laptop, I see the SSID name that I'm connected to, with "Public network" next to it. Is there any reason I should change it to Private? Either way, could someone please explain the pros and cons of having it set to public or private?

I have been asked by my company to evaluate Vista Buisness for use in our company. All of our laptops are purchased from HP and as of a few months ago come with Vista OEM licenses so licenses are not a problem. But as soon as we receive a new laptop it is imaged with XP removing the original windows vista installation and recovery partition. So we have no copy of Vista oem. Does anyone know a place I can download Vista OEM, (Note I only want the files don't want a pirate copy) which I can use with our OEM key.

The comcast system uses a WPA encryption which cannot be changed to WEP as they do not use WPA. I have system 3 shield (iolo) system guard, antivirus, firewall, and the Vista ultimate firewall turned off. I see an unknown computer named FISHY (IP 192.168.1.139) with unknown gaming files on my home network. I have renamed the network on all of our computers and still this unknown computer shows up using MSHOME. I've enabled the Linksys router to acept only the IP addresses our computers, and to deny the IP of FISHY to no avail. How do I remove the FISHY computer. If I turn off the file sharing or discovery all that does is make the FISHY intruder become invisible but they are still there on the network. The shared files on FISHY say Desktop.ini so they are hacking into my system, how do I stop?

My system has two raid 1 arrays - one is running on XP Professional SP3 the other one is running on Vista x64 Ultimate SP1. When I start my virtual machines (either from the Virtual PC console or when double-clicking the *.vmc files) than everything is working fine on XP and the virtual machines are booting and running as expected. However, on Vista the following is happening (and I hope somebody has an idea):
1. Starting the Virtual machines from the console leads to an immediate reboot of my host machine (I can't even see any boot screen of the virtual machine - it is like clicking start in the VPC console -- > reboot of host).

From what I am told, Cisco VPN client will not work with Vista and it is Microsoft's fault. Can you shed some light on this? Cisco is pointing the finger at MS, but it is their software that is causing the problem. But if I do a select all the blank space turns blue as if something is there. When I get mail from ex. USAJobs, the entire body of the email is blank. Some others the text directing me to "having trouble viewing this email click here" and then it takes me to their website. I have the block pics box unchecked and I am running vista with PCTools Spyware doctor. Also email from friends and family the pictures show up with no problems. The only problem I am having is from commercial sites. And yes I even added them to my allow list.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI am running Vista 32bit with 4gigs of ram, AMD Phenom 9950, just put in an ATI 4870X2 with 8.11 drivers. I have two hard drives, one 250gb with the OS and FS9 and FSX on it and another 500gb with really nothing on it. I have my virtual memory set up as follows:
C: and D: drive set to system managed. Should I set the custom size and to what intial and max size?
Im leaning towards the 4870x2 card the cause of the memory leak not sure if it is a driver issue, might install the 5.8 version and see what happens. Also, plan on moving FS9 and FSX to the bigger drive.
I have been having virtual memory problems but thet have never happened to me before in the 1 year that i had this pc and the weird thing is that its not like all the ram is being used only like 1.05GB ram is being used.I was wondering if this problem can be solved this is ver frustrating cause it closes my programs and interrupts wat im doing without saving i was playing the sims 2 and i lost all the progress that i made because of the dam low virtual memory, at the time the only program i had running was the sims 2 and nothing else and ive played the sims 2 so many times in the past and never have i gotten this error, this also happens when i am just browsing the web.

I'm new to this and was wondering how much HD space to allocate for this install. Do you allow space just for the OS or for added programs as well? Also, if I understand correctly, both OS's actually run at the same time. Does this create a problem with resources, or can you put one OS in down mode while using the other? I have a quad core Q6600 and 4 GB of RAM. Hard drive is WD 500 GB.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI just installed SP1 from technet recently, and decided to try my hand at virtualization for the first time today. Once Virtual PC 2007 is installed, my system BSoDs during every boot. The only way to gain access to windows is safe mode, or using the last known good state.
After using last known good state, VPC 2007 is installed, but won't work (as the drivers/services have been removed during install). I've uninstalled the remainder of VPC 2007 and rebooted; no problems. Tried again to installed VPC, and after reboot it once again BSoDs endlessly. So it stems the error is recreatable (at least on my machine).
This is my first post in this forum, but I was just wondering if any of you had experience with virtual memory in Vista x64 and the page file when you have a large amount of RAM. I recently just build a machine which has 12gb of RAM. I am begginning to think that this was a waste of money, because no matter what I do, I cannot seem to get the ram useage to exceed 30 percent, or roughly 4gb of ram. I am a computer science major and completely understand how virtual memory works and what paging is; however, I was always taught that if the OS (Vista in this case) will only swap memory when the memory is full, but this has not been the case as I know that Vista is paging some of the memory onto the disk even though it has another 8gb of free memory to use.
I was just wondering what your thoughts were on disabling paging in Vista and if any of you have experience with doing so when you have a system with a large amount of memory. Also, I would love to hear anybody's explaination as to why Vista is paging the memory onto the HDD when in fact it's not neccessary in my case. Perhaps I do not understand it correctly? I am currently on a different computer, but tommorow I will disable the paging in Vista to see what kind of performance difference I experience, if any and post what I find.

I'm currently using Ubuntu (Linux distro) and one thing I constantly use is the virtual desktop. I've searched around and I found a few of them for XP and Vista but I want one that is optimized for 64bit since I'll be use it a lot / run it all the time. Does anyone use a VDM that works well for vista x64?
