Virtual PC 2007 Windows ME - Place Virtual Disk

Jul 29, 2009

Am I correct in assuming that, for Windows ME to run in a Virtual PC 2007 window, the Windows ME virtual disk must be located inside a disk partition that is FAT32? On a test run, I tried to install WinME on a virtual disk in a folder that was in my normal Vista partition (NTFS), and it didn't get far. I tried placing the WinME virtual disk inside an FAT32 partition, and although I didn't finish the installation process, I got that far, with the WinME instalation screen having popped up and ready for installation. One other thing: Is it possible to place the WinME virtual disk inside a logical FAT32 partition? Or must it be a primary partition?

Virtual PC 2007 On Ultimate SP1 RTM

Mar 23, 2008

I just installed SP1 from technet recently, and decided to try my hand at virtualization for the first time today. Once Virtual PC 2007 is installed, my system BSoDs during every boot. The only way to gain access to windows is safe mode, or using the last known good state.

After using last known good state, VPC 2007 is installed, but won't work (as the drivers/services have been removed during install). I've uninstalled the remainder of VPC 2007 and rebooted; no problems. Tried again to installed VPC, and after reboot it once again BSoDs endlessly. So it stems the error is recreatable (at least on my machine).

Virtual PC 2007, Network Connection In The VM

Jun 1, 2008

I have a strange little quirk I ran into that maybe one of you may know something about with Virtual PC 2007 SP1. I have Vista 64 bit Ultimate w/SP1 installed as the host computer. If I use the 32 bit Vista Ultimate as a Virtual Machine (VM), I have no problems with the network connection or anything else in the VM. If I use the 32 bit Vista Home Premium as a VM, everything works fine except the network connection in the VM. The settings are the same on both.

I wanted to use Home Premium since it is the only one that I have a spare product key number for. Does anyone know of a reason why the network connection will not work with the Home Premium edition over the Ultimate with the exact same VM settings? I hope it's not simply because I have Ultimate installed as the host.

Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 Wont Work

Oct 29, 2008

As you can see from my profile I have Vista Ultimate x64 but I can't install Virtual PC 2007. Basically I downloaded the installer (making sure it was the x64 version), ran it and it all went fine until suddenly the installation just rolled back and said that no modifications were made to the system. It doesn't give me an error message. I searched on the Internet but I can't seem to find the solution. And yes, I tried both the normal installer and the SP1 version.

Jul 17, 2009

This update keeps installing over and over It has now installed successfully 7 times and is shown as successful in the Update History list - 7 times!

I suppose I could uninstall VirtualPC since I have not been using it lately.

I should mention that it does not show up in the Control Panel | Progarams and Features Installed Updates list, though.

One other thing: VirtualPC is not supposed to work on Vista, but it does. In fact my son does development using it daily.

Change To A More Robust Virtual Video Card In VirtualPC 2007?

Jul 4, 2008

Is there a way to change to a more robust virtual video card in VirtualPC 2007? I would like to experiance the full functionality of Aero in Vista. I'm running Ultimate64 w/ Ultimate32 on the virtual PC. At a minimum I would like to have some control some of the settings the "card" would use and such. Or am I just dreaming? I've googled, and visited many forums but none of the posts seem to address this head on.

IE8 RC1 Released To The Public

Jan 26, 2009

As expected, Microsoft Monday released Internet Explorer 8 (IE8) Release Candidate 1 (RC1) to the public. You can grab the download from the Microsoft Download Center: for Vista and Server 2008 32-bit, for Vista and Server 2008 64-bit, for XP 32-bit, for Server 2003 SP2 32-bit, and for Server 2003 SP2 64-bit and XP 64-bit. At time of publishing, the release notes have not yet been updated (but should be soon), though the Technology Overview for Developers is available. Please note that this build is newer than the one in Windows 7 build 7000 and cannot be installed over top of that version of IE8. Testers using Windows 7 will have to wait for a new build of the operating system.

Microsoft already gave testers an RC1 build (8.0.6001.18343) last month and then updated the build number 8.0.6001.18344 that same week, due to an out-of-band security update for the browser. The software giant gave the public IE8 Beta 2 in August 2008 and Beta 1 in March 2008. IE8 RC1 released to the public - Ars Technica

For everyone else, in the coming weeks Microsoft will put IE8 out as an optional download on Windows Update and then later roll it out to users via Automatic Updates. Starting The Virtual Machines From The Console Leads To An Immediate Reboot Of My Host Machine (I Can't Even See Any Boot Screen Of The Virtual Machine - It Is Like Clicking Start In The VPC Console -- > Reboot Of Host)

I have the following issue and hope that somebody can give me a hint about what might be going on! When I start my virtual machines (either from the Virtual PC console or when double-clicking the *.vmc files) than everything is working fine on XP and the virtual machines are booting and running as expected. However, on Vista the following is happening (and I hope somebody has an idea):

1. Starting the Virtual machines from the console leads to an immediate reboot of my host machine (I can't even see any boot screen of the virtual machine - it is like clicking start in the VPC console -- > reboot of host).

FSX And Low Virtual Memory

Feb 6, 2009

I am running Vista 32bit with 4gigs of ram, AMD Phenom 9950, just put in an ATI 4870X2 with 8.11 drivers. I have two hard drives, one 250gb with the OS and FS9 and FSX on it and another 500gb with really nothing on it. I have my virtual memory set up as follows:

C: and D: drive set to system managed. Should I set the custom size and to what intial and max size?

Im leaning towards the 4870x2 card the cause of the memory leak not sure if it is a driver issue, might install the 5.8 version and see what happens. Also, plan on moving FS9 and FSX to the bigger drive.

Installing Xp Pro Virtual OS

Apr 13, 2008

I recently built a new computer and installed Vista Ultimate. I plan on installing XP Pro as a virtual OS. I'm new to this and was wondering how much HD space to allocate for this install. Do you allow space just for the OS or for added programs as well? Also, if I understand correctly, both OS's actually run at the same time. Does this create a problem with resources, or can you put one OS in down mode while using the other? I have a quad core Q6600 and 4 GB of RAM. Hard drive is WD 500 GB.

Virtual Memory And 12gb Of RAM

Dec 20, 2008

This is my first post in this forum, but I was just wondering if any of you had experience with virtual memory in Vista x64 and the page file when you have a large amount of RAM. I recently just build a machine which has 12gb of RAM. I am begginning to think that this was a waste of money, because no matter what I do, I cannot seem to get the ram useage to exceed 30 percent, or roughly 4gb of ram. I am a computer science major and completely understand how virtual memory works and what paging is; however, I was always taught that if the OS (Vista in this case) will only swap memory when the memory is full, but this has not been the case as I know that Vista is paging some of the memory onto the disk even though it has another 8gb of free memory to use.

I was just wondering what your thoughts were on disabling paging in Vista and if any of you have experience with doing so when you have a system with a large amount of memory. Also, I would love to hear anybody's explaination as to why Vista is paging the memory onto the HDD when in fact it's not neccessary in my case. Perhaps I do not understand it correctly? I am currently on a different computer, but tommorow I will disable the paging in Vista to see what kind of performance difference I experience, if any and post what I find.
