I have this in my registry, and since when Vista flubs wifi connections it sometimes comes up with a 169.... (though can't recollect if it is precisely 169.254.183.232) address (via ipconfig) I wondered whether this was the cause. What is it, where did it come from, do I need it, (how) can I get rid of it?..............
View 4 RepliesThe Network and Sharing Center displays a Network Name preceding the Network Type (Public or Private) both of which can be modified. Under the Control Panels | System |Advanced system settings under the Computer Name tab you can view the Workgroup Name and of course modify. I understand the importance of having the Workgroup Name consistent between my XP and Vista computers. Should the Network Name be the same as the Workgroup Name? Does the Network Name have any function in network connections?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a network with two computers, one with XP and the other one with Vista Ultimate. Both computers are wired to a Lynksys router. Before the Vista installation, I had no problem. Now, when I boot and try to go on the net, I got an error message "There is more than one active network connection on this computer."
Th only but cumbersome solution I found was to go in "Network ans sharing Center" where there was not only my private network but also an "unindentified public network". I had to disable the local connection for it then go to diagnose and repair in order to reinstall the local area connection. After that, everything is fine ... until the next reboot.
It appears that in Vista, the DNS server(s) for a PPP connection are always favored over those from other connection regardless of the service provider order defined. This can be verified by using the nslookup command without any arguments and looking at the Default Server that is displayed. This is different than XP. Is there any way to change this?

I have four computers on a very basic network. one computer running windows vista business. one running xp pro. and two running windows xp home. I have set them up so now I can see and enter all computers from any computer I think. the problem is when I tried to open up a remote desktop connection to one of the other computers I kept getting this message. THIS COMPUTER CAN'T CONNECT TO THE REMOTE COMPUTER? i THINK MOST OF YOU WILL KNOW THE REST. Also if any person is having trouble with their computers not seeing each other then do what I have done. I was having trouble connecting all my computers upto the network until I bought a copy of Microsoft live one care and installed it on to three computers and now everything is ok. but I still cannot connect to a remote computer.

For about 2 months ago i reinstalled the computer but it was yesterday i needed my wlan card for first time. I can use my wlan but i can use wired internet. I have tried both old and new drivers. I got the computer wlan switch on but i still can't enable wlan under Network connections. Everything under the device manager is installed and working correct. When i enbale My wireless network it does not change. It is still disabled. When i try to enable it true my Ralink (wlan card distributor) software it just say "Switch radio state fail". I'm completely out of ideas now.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a Asus PW5 DH Deluxe with dual Marvell Yukon 88e8503 Gigabit network adapters and a Realtek Wireless adapter intergrated into the motherboard. I've been running Vista Ultimate x64 for well over a year with absolutely no issues whatsoever. This past Wednesday evening I finished using the computer, left it on like I normally do and left my office. When I came in the next morning none of the NICs where working. All I get is the "X" over the icons showing that nothing is plugged in. I tried all of the onboard NICs with no luck, I tried new cables, new drivers, I even tried a different router although all of the other machines on the network are fine. I looked and saw that some Windows updates were installed the previous night, suspected that they were the culprit I uninstalled them with no luck.
I tried Winsock reset, no luck. I installed a new NIC, no luck. I was going to do a system restore but for some reason my computer only had two restore points. The latest one being the reboot from the Windows updates being installed. I'm running Kaspersky Internet Security 2009. I've disable the firewall even though without getting a network connection period I don't see that being the problem. It didn't help.
All of the other machines on the network are humming along nicely, including the one I'm making this post with. Do you have any ideas that I could try? I really want to NOT wipe and reload this system if possible. My gut tells me this is from the Windows updates but then why didn't uninstalling them help.
I just installed SP1, uneventful and everything seemed fine. But when finished my network services totally fail. I try to open network connections and instead explorer totally locks up and unable to to anything. Cannot connect to internet. Says "server communication failed" when I mouse over the network icon on toolbar. Was forced to restore to pre-SP1 and everything is fine again

The reason I ask is I have computers with XP and NetBeui; I have File and print sharing, and Client for MS Networks checked for NetBeui, and unchecked for TCP/IP. I want to do the same in Vista. NetBeui works for a wired connecton in Vista, but I have yet to get it to work wirelessly.

In a few days in takes away the admin, I get some weird connections via IP 6 media connected. when I try to release the state it say requires elevation and I don't have admin rights. I always see a protected storage running S-1-5-21-4158074477-3187036503-3076259393-1000. There is many other files as well. No matter if I load windows today, when I look in the directories they will all have todays date. In a few days It has new directories dated 11-02-06. and funny names like WIFEMAN.dll BIGKID.dll savedgames.dll.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI just setup a wireless USB adapter on my sister's PC. It worked fine, until she rebooted. Now she can't get on the internet. The wireless signal is excellent at 100%, but browsers aren't connecting. I looked in Network Connections, and there's 4 networks. 1394 Connections 1-3. Connections 1 & 2 are doing nothing, but 3 is the one showing the wireless connection (and it looks to be working fine). The fourth network is Local Area Connection, which is doing nothing. What can I do to fix this?
View 6 Replies View RelatedA while back I had wi fi working on my laptop. The problem I have now is that I had to reload and start over because of numerous infections (trojans, & viruses & malware etc.). I have a Netgear router with setup information that was previously installed. I went into Control Panel / Network connections And tried to activate wireless network connect 3 and it said acquiring network address Intel(R) Pro/wireless 3945ABG Network Connection. I chose /clicked on the network I had previously installed and clicked on Connect.
The wireless network connection box came up and asked me for the network key. It already had a blanked out key in the 2 boxes so I clicked on connect and it scanned and said acquiring network address. The problem is that it never acquires the address and puts a red X on the icon by the clock.
A laptop running Vista is having the following problems:
1. Can't connect to WiFi
2. Can't launch system restore
3. Can't launch WIndows help
4. Can't launch Event Viewer
The last time it was working fine, a Windows update was installed and the system was shut down probably. The next time it was rebooted, the problems above occurred.
The new Network and Sharing Center in Windows Vista is great for the average Windows user but can be a huge headache for advanced users. When I need to make a change to my network settings I don't want to be forced to go through the networking interface for the average non-technical users. I want to go right to the settings screen and make the change.Â
I am a big fan of the old Windows XP network approach where I could modify all of the network settings and connect to wireless network from the Network Connections screen. In Windows Vista, the Network Connections screen still exists, as shown above, but you have to go through the Network and Sharing Center screen first. Using a very useful explorer trick I discovered when playing with "::" and explorer class IDs, you can create a shortcut that will take you directly to the Network Connections screen.
Right click on the desktop and select New and then Shortcut.
In the location box, copy and paste explorer.exe ::{7007ACC7-3202-11D1-AAD2-00805FC1270E} and hit Next....
I have a Vista Ultimate laptop which I used for work in the US. Now I live in Germany. During my initial stay at the hotels, I used the hotel wireless connection and Vista connected to the Internet fine. Now I live in an apartment and got the DSL service from T-Mobile (Deutsche Telekom) and here is the problem. The DSL phone works fine. My Vista will not connect to the DSL router (Speedport 303V).
1.Every attempt to use the browser (Firefox or IE) to connect to the router?s IP address returns the following error message: Connection Interrupted The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading. The network link was interrupted while negotiating a connection. Please try again.
2.None of the external web sites can be accessed
3.The network configuration information from the Control Panel says I am connected to the Internet and the only application working is Skype.
4.My wife has an Apple laptop. She could connect to the router and the Internet from the beginning of this DSL setup.
One thing I did change in the Wireless card settings was the DNS servers. Soon after I added DNS servers from OpenDNS, and I have access to the Internet. I am still not able to connect to my DSL router. I disabled IPV6 for the interfaces and tried to use wired and WiFi access to the router and Vista will not access the router. Every other place I have used WiFi connection, DSL or Cable broadband, I
had no problem. This is the first time I am experiencing this.
I am using a windows Vista 32 bit home premium notebook computer for which the wireless network detection has stopped working. I updated the driver for the built in wireless card with out any results. I also tried a plug in wireless card which windows detected and said was working properly and this did not work either. This leaves me to believe that something is wrong with the OS.
I can get on the internet via dialup modem and also by the ethernet connection with a DSL modem. I have been to several hotspots that I know have wifi and no networks show up. When I click on the "Connect to" in the start menu, nothing happens. When I click on "connect to a network" in control panel, I get an error loading wizards message saying module not found. The card is an Inrel pro wireless 3945ABG and IS turned on. All critical windows updates have been installed.
I got a HP dv6000 and I am having a problemo! Its a newish computer. I bought it nearly new off ebay, and I put vista on it. Vista works and all but it only recognizes the dial up port. The computer has wifi and an ethernet port but it will not detect any network.

Hardware - tried D-Link DWL-G510 and Edimax 7128 adapters with newest Vista drivers I have 2 wifi networks broadcasted by Linksys WRT54G and Airlive WP-5460AP (latest firmware) - different channels set, both with WPA TKIP. Vista connects from time to time to Linksys but either only locally with no internet acces or with very poor internet transmission and then dropping connection. Connection to Airlive is rejected as wrong passphrase (although its correct). With no encryption only local connection to Airlive is possible. XP computers work with no problems with both devices.

I then went to my network list and noticed that the network had been removed unknowingly, after noticing this, I then tried adding the network manually and guess what, it showed me access denied. View 8 Replies View RelatedRunning Vista Enterprise x86 SP1 with all updates applied as per Windows Update. Machine is a HP 6910p with Intel Wifi Link 4965AGN. All power saving disabled where possible; power management running max performance. Router is Linksys WRT54GS v2 with latest firmware from Linksys installed. SSID broadcast disabled. Connecting using WPA-2 personal, AES encryption. Have a few other notebooks (Tosh, HP, Dell) and all work without problems but they are all running XP. This current problematic notebook runs fine if I boot to XP.
Problem: with no discernable pattern, the Wifi connection would be lost and cannot reconnect even though the network is visible (shows up as unnamed). Tried IPConfig renew, right-click diagnose & repair, disable/reenable (from network setting and soft-button on notebook) and reboot. Nothing helps.
Simple solution: click on the network and provide the correct SSID and Passphrase, all is well again. Of course, each time I do this, it's a new Wifi network registration so I end up with 6-10 every week that I need to clean up (mywifinet, mywifinet 2, mywifinet 2 3, mywifinet 2 3 5, etc...). They're all connected to the same thing but everytime it dies, the same setting will not reconnect and I have to register all over again. Registration is standard and set to remember and auto connect. This isn't my only problem with Vista but it is the most annoying. Why, why, why does Vista hate me?
i have this HP compaq presario CQ60 and any time i try to download anything over a few KB, the download fails. This happens during all updates, winupdates,antivirus updates, network file transfers ect.. Basically any downloads. I have no problem when using a LAN connection its only wifi when i have the problem. I have attemted forum searches on microsofts website to no avail , google, bing ect have nothing even close to the results im looking for, all my drivers are up to date.

I have a Vista laptop which connects via wifi to my home network router and I can access all the PCs and Printers and internet no problem. I now have to do some work away from home and will purchase a USB Broadband modem which will give me mobile internet/email, but I will still want to move files and print when at home.
If I have my USB Modem and my Wifi enabled at the same time, can I access the Internet via the USB Modem, while accessing the PCs and Printers at home? How would my laptop know to access the Internet via the dongle modem and not through the router and modem on the home network?
