Speed Up Wireless WAN Connections

Sep 5, 2007

In Windows Vista the networking components were designed to be much more intelligent and automatically adjust the network settings to optimize the connection speed.  This is a great new feature.  Your network components basically tweak themselves for optimal performance.  In most situations, these components automatically adjust perfectly for best performance. However, with wireless WAN cards the detection of network conditions is flawed and can result in slower network performance.

To fix this problem, Microsoft has released a hotfix for users affected by this issue. If you have a Wireless WAN device,  I suggest you give this hotfix a try....

Wireless Can't Connected: 1394 Connections 1-3

Dec 1, 2009

I just setup a wireless USB adapter on my sister's PC. It worked fine, until she rebooted. Now she can't get on the internet. The wireless signal is excellent at 100%, but browsers aren't connecting. I looked in Network Connections, and there's 4 networks. 1394 Connections 1-3. Connections 1 & 2 are doing nothing, but 3 is the one showing the wireless connection (and it looks to be working fine). The fourth network is Local Area Connection, which is doing nothing. What can I do to fix this?

Wireless Network Seen But No Speed

Jul 30, 2009

I have a siemens Amilo laptop with a built in wireless card. It can see the network and asks for the network key but doesn't connect. It just times out. Although it finds all the networks available in the area they all display without any green bars in the speed bars. It seems to have no wireless power. The green bars are all grey instead of green even when the laptop is stood next to the router. I have another laptop that connects without any problems. I have removed the drivers from device manager and reinstalled them from the
drivers folder. This made no difference.

Memory Speed: Can't Stop Wondering If The Difference In Speed WOULD Matter

Apr 13, 2008

I just bought a new pc with Vista Home Premium, it came with: 1GB PC2-6400 DDR2 SDRAM, expandable to 4GB. I wanted more memory so I bought a 2GB kit PC2-*5300* DDR2 SDRAM, because it was on sale for $60. The 6400 speed would have cost me over $200. The salesman assured me it would work fine and I wouldn't notice any difference. I installed it when I got home and everything works great, no problems. But I still can't stop wondering if the difference in speed WOULD matter. Can anyone explain, or provide a link explaining, when, if ever, I would benefit from the faster memory. I mostly use my PC for surfing the web, email, and some photo editing.

Slow Internet Speed:speed Goes Down To 300 Kbps

Sep 5, 2008

I have Vista x64 Ultimate and I'm having internet connection issues. My laptop is the HP Pavillion dv7. My ISP tells me everything is fine on his end. I have a router (Linksys model BEFW11S4) 2.4 Ghz - 802.11b. When I connect the wire from my modem directly to my laptop, I get internet speeds of 900 Kbps. But when I use the router, the speed goes down to 300 Kbps. Is there a setting in Vista that could be doing this? According to Linksys, I should be able to attain 900 Kbps with the router. The laptop comes with a wireless adapter (Intel Wi-Fi Link 5100AGN).

Two Active Network Connections

May 18, 2008

I have a network with two computers, one with XP and the other one with Vista Ultimate. Both computers are wired to a Lynksys router. Before the Vista installation, I had no problem. Now, when I boot and try to go on the net, I got an error message "There is more than one active network connection on this computer."

Th only but cumbersome solution I found was to go in "Network ans sharing Center" where there was not only my private network but also an "unindentified public network". I had to disable the local connection for it then go to diagnose and repair in order to reinstall the local area connection. After that, everything is fine ... until the next reboot.

DNS Server Order For PPP Connections

Jun 5, 2008

It appears that in Vista, the DNS server(s) for a PPP connection are always favored over those from other connection regardless of the service provider order defined. This can be verified by using the nslookup command without any arguments and looking at the Default Server that is displayed. This is different than XP. Is there any way to change this?

All Networking Connections Stopped Working.

Aug 14, 2009

I have a Asus PW5 DH Deluxe with dual Marvell Yukon 88e8503 Gigabit network adapters and a Realtek Wireless adapter intergrated into the motherboard. I've been running Vista Ultimate x64 for well over a year with absolutely no issues whatsoever. This past Wednesday evening I finished using the computer, left it on like I normally do and left my office. When I came in the next morning none of the NICs where working. All I get is the "X" over the icons showing that nothing is plugged in. I tried all of the onboard NICs with no luck, I tried new cables, new drivers, I even tried a different router although all of the other machines on the network are fine. I looked and saw that some Windows updates were installed the previous night, suspected that they were the culprit I uninstalled them with no luck.

I tried Winsock reset, no luck. I installed a new NIC, no luck. I was going to do a system restore but for some reason my computer only had two restore points. The latest one being the reboot from the Windows updates being installed. I'm running Kaspersky Internet Security 2009. I've disable the firewall even though without getting a network connection period I don't see that being the problem. It didn't help.

All of the other machines on the network are humming along nicely, including the one I'm making this post with. Do you have any ideas that I could try? I really want to NOT wipe and reload this system if possible. My gut tells me this is from the Windows updates but then why didn't uninstalling them help.

Create A Direct Shortcut To Network Connections

Apr 16, 2007

The new Network and Sharing Center in Windows Vista is great for the average Windows user but can be a huge headache for advanced users. When I need to make a change to my network settings I don't want to be forced to go through the networking interface for the average non-technical users.  I want to go right to the settings screen and make the change.

I am a big fan of the old Windows XP network approach where I could modify all of the network settings and connect to wireless network from the Network Connections screen.  In Windows Vista, the Network Connections screen still exists, as shown above, but you have to go through the Network and Sharing Center screen first.  Using a very useful explorer trick I discovered when playing with "::" and explorer class IDs, you can create a shortcut that will take you directly to the Network Connections screen.

Right click on the desktop and select New and then Shortcut.

In the location box, copy and paste explorer.exe ::{7007ACC7-3202-11D1-AAD2-00805FC1270E} and hit Next....

PCI-E Port, Extra SATA3 Connections Slow Things Down

Apr 25, 2010

I am really not very good with hardware, but I want to install some new USB 3.0 ports. I have selected a card, ASUS U2S6 USB3.0/Sata3 6Gbps PCIE Card and I want to install it. I have checked my computer and I do have the required PCI-E port. That is not the problem. Just two questions:

1) This website seems to suggest that it will only work on some very selected motherboards. Asus U3S6 USB3.0 & SATA 6Gbps PCI-Express Controller Card [U3S6] Controller Cards SATA III 6Gbps

Compatible motherboards: P7P55D Deluxe, P7P55D EVO, P7P55D PRO, P7P55D, P7P55D LE, P7P55 LX However, my motherboard is not listed. I thought that PCI-E cards were just meant to be insert and install drivers. Is this not the case?

2) Also, I have noticed that this card does not require additional power. Does this mean that it might not be able to power some of the more power consuming USB gadgets that I might buy? Therefore, would this be a better choice: UNITEK 2 Port USB 3.0 PCI Express Card Reviewed.

I do have a spare Molex power cable, so that would not be a problem, though an extension would be required (again not a problem) I do like the idea of having the extra SATA3 connections (and I know that using them may slow things down) but primarily this is for my USBs, so I want proper functionality.

Make Mapped Network Connections Work For Privilege Escalated Processes

Mar 5, 2007

Ever wonder why you get network authentication errors when you are trying access a mapped network share from a process that was elevated by UAC? Josh over at WindowsConnected has a great article on how you can fix this annoying issue:

On Windows Vista when you map a drive under your admin account you will find that your mapped drive is not available after you switch to your full token via a RunAs or Consent dialog. This is by design because there are actually two tokens in play here. What happens is the LSA recognized that you are admin at logon and creates two logons. The first with a "filtered" token or non-admin which is used to render your desktop and the other containing your full token to be available after consent dialogs.

Because there are two separate logons there are separate logon ID's.  When network shares are mapped they are linked to the current logon session for the current process token. Meaning you don't have access to the network drive from the alternate logon. This can come into play with logon scripts and a number of other areas where you may require access to a network share from both tokens....

Connecting A Sony Vaio To Wireless Network: Switch On Wireless Adaptor Capability

a friend has a new sony vaio with vista home premium installed. For some reason it will not connect to my netgear router wirelessly. I have tried everything. I am however not too hot on Vista as this is my first time with it. The adaptor says its on, but when you interegate it and ask why it wont connect it keeps telling me "switch on wireless adaptor capability". In the network connections it is on, the switch on the front right is swiitched on and the wireless network light on the front is on. The network is fine and working as i have my laptop connected to it. All security is present and entered. It seems to be the computer as it doesnt find any networks when there are loads in the area. Am i missing something exceptionally obvious? Does Vista have another "on" switch for this adaptor?
