Unable To Map Network Drive

Sep 4, 2009

I'm running Vista Ultimate, 32bit, with a home network and internet. Recently I bought, and installed, the "Argosy Mobile Video HDD Pro," model #HV359T (it's essentially an external 1.5TB drive housed in a small case that lets you store and play media -- movies, music, pictures, etc. Nifty thing.) I set it up and it works just fine, and downloaded some movies on my home TV system via USB. BUT, I just can't map it to a drive on Vista on my home network.

The error I get is simple: "Windows cannot access 192.168.1.103" (The IP addr of the box). I can ping it, the supplied utilities can see it, but Vista just can't when I try to map it. I have no further diagnostic info, just that Windows can't access it; not too helpful. I suspect it's a security issue, but that's just a wild guess.

Strange behaviour, Vista 64-XP 32 network using Netgear Router. At Vista start up when XP is already running I am unable to see the XP computer from the Vista computer, even though the XP is seen on the Vista Network Map.
When XP is started after Vista computer is up then all is normal and correct. At all times the XP computer can see and access the Vista computer, the problem appears only when Vista is booted after the XP bootup.

Network: Unable To Restore Any Connection

Dec 13, 2009

I am currently running Vista home on my main PC. I have a router plugged into it. The router is working fine (my son's laptop accesses wirelessly, and I am able to hit the net using a virtual PC that I have set up on it.) However, my main computer is not recognizing the router and is returning an APIPA address when I run ipconfig. I have tried to ping the router but am not able to hit it. I have replaced the cable (even though I do not think that is the issue as I am able to access via the virtual PC). I am unable to restore any connection.

Unable To Accessing Network Shares

Mar 23, 2008

I have a fle server that I recently replaced with a new machine. The name of the new machine is the same as that of the old, and the names of the shares in it are also the same. Since the upgrade my Vista machine is unable to access the shares and gives me this error: "The parameter is incorrect". This occurrs when trying to open mapped drives as well as trying to access the server's root UNC path. After seeing this error I tried the "net view" command from DOS and got this: C:>net view \x6 ,System error 87 has occurred. The parameter is incorrect.

I've found a way to temporarily fix the problem, but after I reboot my Vista box it happens again and I need to apply the fix again. The fix is to use "net use" like this: C:>net use \x6software /user:xxxusername The command completed successfully. Note that if I use my actual domain name this command fails, but if I put in an invalid one (like "xxx") then it succeeds. Yes, I know that's very strange. I was lucky to find this by mistyping my domain name once and was surprised that the command then worked. After issuing this command I can
access the file server just fine and my mapped network drives work fine as well. So, does anyone know how I can fix this permanently?

Network Printing: Unable To Print

Mar 23, 2008

I replaced the XP Home desktop machine (died) that hosts our laser printer. The new box is Windows Vista. After the usual pain of working through issues, it mostly is satisfactory. Two problems remain with network printing. 1) If the host machine (Vista) has fallen into an idle state (I haven't tweaked standard settings), my XP machine is unable to print to the printer on the Vista system. I have to go and move the mouse to wake it up. XP as a host never had this problem.

2) If either computer is rebooted for any reason, I lose access to the network printer. I have to delete it and add it again. I assume this has to do with the inability to retain the account/password to access the Vista system. I'd really like a fix for these annoyances.

Network Sharing, Unable To Connect To The Internet

Apr 6, 2009

I'm running a visa 32 bit laptop and a Windows xp PC on a network and im trying to send files from the laptop to the PC. My laptop is unable to connect to the internet and I think the problem is that I have a virus so I'm just going to reformat the whole thing. I want to send my laptop files to my PC, but when I go to the network and sharing center on the laptop to turn public folder sharing on, the whole window just freezes when I apply the setting. The workgroup names are the same. Is there anything else that I have to do to be able to share the files?

XP Network - Computers Unable To Share Files

Apr 23, 2008

I have a home office network with one new Dell laptop with Windows Vista Home Basic which I bought a couple of weeks ago, one desktop with Windows XP Pro and one older laptop with Windows XP Pro. The laptops are connected wirelessly, the desktop is using a wired Ethernet connection.

Obviously, there have been never a problem with XP machines. Initially, the Vista machine was also able to connect to everybody else. I didn't even bother to look at the settings because everything worked. Then I went to a business trip, and connected to other networks, including wireless public ones in the airports. When I came back, I was unable to share files or even see other computers on the LAN. The internet connection is working fine though. Oh yes, and I also installed a couple of updates, probably some of those constituting Service Pack 1 as well.

When I checked the network, to my surprise, it turned out that it became "Public" (could this be "guilt by association" - the airport wireless networks are public, so my home network is public, too?). I changed it to "Private". Didn't help. Checked shares, made sure that the users have the same passwords. Ditto. I deleted the history of the airport networks. Still the same.........

Unable To Network 2 Machines Using Machine Names

May 27, 2009

how to network two Vista machines using their respective machine names? I'm only able to access shared folders using IP addresses. - The two machines are a laptop running Vista Business x64 and a desktop running Vista Home Premium x64. - Both machines have File Sharing, Network Discovery, and Password Protected Sharing turned on. - They are on the same workgroup (no domain). - I am able to see the machines in Network Explorer, but if I double-click on them, all I see is the printer (not the shared folders) or I get an error message telling me the machine is inaccessible. Both machines have been assigned a static IP address by the router.

Unable To Connect To External USB Drive

Mar 23, 2008

When I try to connect an external USB hard drive or a USB memory stick to my laptop, Vista throws up a message saying: ???Windows needs to install driver software for your Unknown Device???. I let Vista search, but Vista cannot find the required driver. However, when I connect the same external USB hard drive or a USB memory stick to my desktop PC, also running Vista Ultimate, Vista has no problems recognizing the device and installing the required driver automatically and without throwing up any messages. I suspect that some Vista service(s) on my laptop might be disabled or not functioning properly, but I cannot find out which one could be the cause. Perhaps someone here could point me in the right direction.

Unable To Normally Format External Drive

Apr 24, 2010

It's unable to either normally format any external memory devices into a FAT or FAT32 format, or unable to read it at all. I keep trying to open the device but it keeps saying that i need to format it, but because of problem 1, it can't be formated (it almost completes but the process shuts down, stating that it can't be formated). This problem has been happening for the longest time and I really need this fixed.

When I say external memory devices, i mean CDs, DVDs, Flash drives, SD cards, memory card readers. Everytime I check the disk management of these devices, it says they are Primary Partitioned (which is the normal status right?). And the only thing that seems to be the problem is the RAW file system (which I heard windows doesn't read)............

Unable To Access The Drive From Windows Vista

Feb 8, 2009

Whenever I try to click on X: in My Computer I get the following: X: is not accessible. Access is denied. That's kinda funny given that earlier today, chkdsk /F was able to not only run on the drive but actually told me a few filenames (the records for those files had to be updated). I ran Ubuntu LiveCD and was able to access the drive just fine from that, as well. My question is... given all this, why am I unable to access the drive from Windows Vista? Sure, maybe the drive is going bad, but that doesn't explain why Ubuntu LiveCD and chkdsk /F can access it and Windows Vista cannot. So, short of just abandoning Window Vista all together in favor of Ubuntu, what can I do?

Cannot Install XP 32 On Partition In VISTA 64 - UNABLE TO FIND DRIVE

Dec 27, 2008

I have -Dell XPS 730x with 6 GIG DDR3 RAM, Intel i7 64 bit Processor, 500 GIG disk,

I am running -Windows Vista Home Premium 64 which was preinstalled on the cpu

I want to -Dual boot between Vista64 and Windows XP32

So far -I have done everything to this machine from creating a virtual window in Vista64, to going into the command prompt from vista boot disk and running diskpart to clear hard drive.

I currently have -Two partitions on one disk. Primary 200GIG and Healthy 265GIG -Windows Vista Home Premium64 installed and running

The problems im having -every time try to boot from CD and run the windows xp setup, it is UNABLE to find ANY HARD DRIVES!

I have researched that
- I must have the disk partitioned
- Windows XP must be installed first
- I have to play with the boot.ini
- If i install vista32 it will be more successful

The errors I have gotten -STOP: 0x0000008E - i researched this and it said one option is to take out the excess RAM

I will be happy if - By the end of this weekend I can successfully run XP or both OS's in dual boot.

I need to go through all this trouble because - Digidesign has not written software for 64 bit proccessing yet. I need to make music.

Unable To Find Files On Removed Hard Drive

Nov 22, 2009

My laptop motherboard fried, so I removed the hard drive and purchased a caddy. When I plug the hard drive in to my new desktop PC I am able to see that only 4GB of the 100 GB capacity is available (as should be the case). However, I cannot see any of my files on there (folders I had created on the desktop etc.).

The only folders I can see are PerfLogs, Program Files, SwSetup, Users, Windows and two of my personal folders (both containing some photos). I really need to find the rest of my files as I have 12GBs of photos and videos of my baby boy on there, and would be gutted if I cannot access them again (for obvious reasons). Nothing else is important.

How To Setup VPN And Network Drive?

Jul 1, 2008

I would like to setup a VPN so that i can share my home videos and pictures with my family across the state. I would like to be able to setup a network drive so that vista media center can monitor it. This way we could turn on vista and browse to the vids or pics and see what is new. This would save a lot of hassle of emailing them all the time. We all have the same dynamic isp, routers and Vista proff or ultimate. So i'm thinking that if i can get 2 computers to work like i want over a VPN then i'll have no problem with the rest of the families computers. I have used Cisco to successfully setup a vpn across country using one computer with vista and the other with xp. Is vista's vpn setup similar to cisco's? Is Vista capable of creating what i described above?

Network Drive Not Accessible?

Apr 9, 2008

I have a desktop that is running 64 bit Ultimate and my laptop is running 32 bit Home Premium. I have the laptop set up as wireless and the desktop as direct connect to the router. I set up a home network so I can access my drives from either machine. I can access two desktop drives from my laptop, but it won't let me access some of the other drives. From the desktop, I cannot access any drives on the laptop. The drives that it won't let me access says "\BueningsMy Music is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. Access is denied."

Why would it let me access some drives and not others? I have the Network Discovery amd File Sharing turned on. All other items are turned off, including Password Protected Sharing. I followed the steps of "Set up a connection or network" and it is set up as a Private Network. Let me know where things may be goofy or things to check. I'd like to get this going correctly if possible.

Share DVD Drive On Wireless Network (Group Policy?)

Feb 18, 2010

I'm trying to troubleshoot a problem. I have a Win7 Home Premium 32bit netbook and a Vista Home Premium 64bit laptop on a wireless network. I'm able to share files, folders, and a printer with no problem, but I can't seem to share the DVD drive on the laptop. I want to be able to install software on the Win7 netbook using the Vista laptop's DVD drive over the network. The DVD drive is shared and given full control permission. It shows up on the Win7 netbook, but when I try to access it, it says Windows cannot access (drive name). You do not have permission to access (drive name). Contact your network administrator to request access.

After browsing the net for a solution, I think an entry in the Vista registry is restricting access to the drive through a group policy. I saw on another forum where changing the Default value to 0 may correct this issue. I also changed the ValueType value to 0. Neither worked for me. Then I noticed that DisplayName value, @wsecedit.dll,-59098. (See picture) I researched and found out that it had something to do with a Group Policy restriction. Since there is no Group Policy Editor for Vista Home Premium, could I simply delete that entry? How else could I change or edit that? (I saw on this forum where someone is working on Group Policy Editor for all versions of Vista).
