I had been trying to install Norton AntiVirus 2009 15 days trial. When i click on the installation file, the installation will start. The status of the installation will only remain at "Intializing". Approximately 5 seconds later, the installation will stop, no prompt message appear.
Same scenario appears no matter how many times i tried to install.

As long as they test it, they should not run it with my license, but as a 30 days trial. Of course, my Vista is already activated. So, how can I turn its image back into an unactivatedtrial? (A clean install is no option for my colleagues, since I installed applications, drivers, tweaks and hacks, which only make the value of this particular installation.).

View 9 Replies View RelatedI downloaded a bandwidth meter, after getting excess data usage on my cable bill. We only surf, upload pics, forums, occasional DL, etc. Nothing heavy. Yesterday I used 750 mb just surfing!! the only DL I did was a 22mb Adware, to check for spyware. no viruses, well protected here. I uninstalled yahoo, bitching that it must be that. I saw a drop, but not enough to use as much as i was, just surfing. I got to thinking about how years ago, Norton (or McAffee I forget) used to DL mail to their server, scan it and then redownload it to your computer. I thought Norton must have a similar bug. I was 31 days into my 90 day trial, and that has been the only major change on here. I uninstalled Norton and viola usage is down about 90%. I always thought it was strange that Norton never notified me of anything, but obviously it was busy doing something in the background. Just the occasional notification (rarely) that it found a problem and fixed it. Although they were idiotic notifications, like we found a cookie and fixed it.

Please obtain a new copy of the software.' I have attempted to install these programs at least three times and still get the above messages. Since the laptop is brand new, i doubt there is a virus on it.

It looks great so I decided to subscribe and share my little knowledge about Vista. Well, it's actually mainly to ask you to share your knowledge with me. Here is my story: I have installed BitDefender Antivirus 2009 on my Vista Ultimate x64 and experience two big issues. I have reported those issues to the BitDefender's technical support but it's the weekend, so not yet any answer...
First, Firefox 3.0.4 crashes when I exit the browser if I keep the BitDefender Antiphishing add-on enabled. Everything goes fine if I disable it (from the Tools/Add-ons pane of Firefox, not from the AntiPhishing's right-click menu). I didn't see a lot of people complaining about this issue yet. Do you know something about that and maybe how to solve it? Next, the Bitdefender services stop to run when I wake up my PC (I.E.: after a "standby"). And the following message appears in the System event log : "The BitDefender Virus Shield service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 1 time(s).". This one is really a big issue as I often use the Sleep mode instead of a real shutdown... meaning that I will often be without any protection when I wake up my PC... Did someone else experience the same issue? If I get answers from BitDefender (I hope I will... as I paid for the licence), I will post them here.
My saga with Acromis True Image continues. I have successfully installed it on my fairly new Vista PC and found a way of creating and using a rescue disc by adjusting the bootup sequence of the drives. I now find that each time I try to do a backup to my Buffalo external HDD - reformatted to NTFS - I get the error message "Failed to execute the task - Error #1364 - A specified authentication package is unknown (0xFFF0)"
Acronis web support say I should edit the registry as a registry entry is missing in the following registry subkey: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlLsa. This surprised me as my PC is not on a network. This is covered in You may not be able to connect to a remote server, the Workstation service may stop, and you may receive an "Error 1364" error message in Windows Server 2003 or in Windows Small Business Server 2003........
I just got a new computer running Vista. I installed Norton Antivirus but in the "Norton Protection Center" I get an "At Risk" warning regarding the firewall. Specifically it reads "At Risk: Advanced Firewall". I have Windows Firewall tuned on, I don't understand what it is talking about when it says Advanced Firewall.
View 9 Replies View RelatedThen she attempted to un-install Norton 360 and install Norton 2010. Since then, she has the limited connectivity problem. She's un-installed 2010 but 360 still appears in the add/remove programs. If you click on it, it says there's a missing path. With either wireless or a cable connection, it fails to get a proper IP address from the router. Another PC on the network still works fine. My theory is that some system file of Norton's is still in there somewhere trying to intercept network traffic and screwing things up. I've tried following trouble shooting guides for the general limited connectivity problem and none helped (I know the router works fine with Vista and everything has been re-booted and this has been going on for weeks).

Back up all important data" The balloon messages have appeared recently, but I wasn't quick enough to read it all and I didn't believe it anyway. Just to see, I went through the process of reinstalling, but it was going to be a new install wiping all files and data from my C drive, so I cancelled the install. Would anyone know why this is happening after 9 months and is there anyway I can get around a new install? I have been using Acronis to back up, can I use it to put my settings/files/data back, or will I end up with balloon messages again?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI am connecting an external hard drive (Acomdata 250G drive - pretty standard) via USB to my HP laptop running Vista. I am able to see the device listed under Disk Drives in the Device Manager. Drilling into Properties, I see that the device is running properly and, having re-loaded the device drivers, I have the most recent drivers. The issue: I am unable to see the device listed in Window Explorer, and thus I can't drill into the folders to get at the content.
I am using Window Vista. I am unable to uninstall Window Live Messenger (latest version). I go to control panel, under program, I saw those with window live xxx and i remove it but i cant uninstall/change window live essentials and i cant find the Window Live Messenger there. I exit the icon that appear at the bottom of the screen. I even remove it from the program. But after i restart the PC, Window Live Messenger appears again.

I have Vista 64 Home Prem verson, and I had a hard time to install WMDC 6.1 to my computer. When I installed this software, it said fail to install. Then told me to go to C:windowsMobile center and run setup from here. I did what it told me, but I can't get it to install. After this failure installation, I saw Windows Mobile Device Center from Start Program. I cliked on it, and it tried to install the WMDC again, then gave me the same error message. I spend hours and hours to google, but I can't find solution.

The reasons that Ubuntu is more secure than Windows are twofold:
1. When *anything* in Ubuntu needs updating or patching, it all comes
from the same source and a little orange star appears when any updates
or patches are available. It's a known fact that anti virus apps and
anti malware apps can only deal with nasties that are known, not the new
ones. Hence, it is very important to be updated or patched and not just
the operating system but everything that is installed on the computer.
Windows has no central updating source and the user has to be checking
constantly for updates to their programs or face the possibility of
being compromised.
2. In Ubuntu, when anything wants to install, you have to key in your
password. With Windows, you have to click on "OK" or nothing at all as
is evidenced by drive by malware. Unlike Windows, the Linux kernel is
not intertwined with a browser like Windows is with Internet Explorer
and the kernel is kept away and protected from the user account.
I have Windows HP with Vista Sp1 installed on my Black Viper tweaked pc and am very satisfied with its performance ; however I wish to install Win Vista SP2 and have run into major roadblocks. I have read through many suggestions on this topic but still no joy after a month or more of trying. Initially, the download would start, then stop after 99% was installed and revert back. Now when trying to install, I get a message that SP1 is not installed and I must install it first . SP1 is installed but I tried to reinstall it to no avail.
When trying to reinstall SP1 I get a message that SP1 is already installed, then the reinstallation stops.! Yet, my attempts to install SP2 tell me I must first install SP1. I have tried the SFC / SCANNOW and chkdsk /r repairs to no avail . I have also tried repairing my system with the Microsoft OEM HP installation disk but the repair does not address my issues. I do not wish to reinstall Vista from scratch since my system is working very nicely except for this glitch. I am chasing my tail and need some help with this problem.
I have an HP Pavillion dv6000 laptop that has repeatedly failed to install the Windows Vista Service Pack 1 since August 2008. I have installed KB947821-v4,v5,and v6 x86 updates to resolve this issue, but the sp1 update continues to fail. I have been on the phone with Microsoft for three days. I allowed them remote access to my laptop; they disabled firewalls, and virus and spyware protection, blocked startup programs, and they have had no luck either. I even tried to update in safe mode, but was unable to do so as well. I loathe Vista, and would like to use my upgrade to Windows 7 disc, but of course, the Windows 7 advisor tells me I cannot upgrade without the mythical and elusive Vista SP1 installed.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a Windows 7 Home Premium that I have used on one of my laptops, with excellent results. After taking a complete backup of my wife's Vista laptop, I'd like to use the same CD on her laptop, as a 30 day trial. If she likes it, I'd be willing to pay for another copy. If not, I'd restore her laptop to it's Vista.
I use StorageCraft, so my backup will restore everything, Vista, drivers, installed applications, absolutely everything. I'm not looking to cheat Microsoft, but don't want to buy a copy and then not like it. Will this work? We'll probably like it, and pay a fee to continue using the installed copy, if possible.
My system keeps telling me that my Windows-license will end in x days, though I have a valid Vista-copy. I have installed SP1 in september and from that date it says 'evaluation-copy' in the right-bottom corner. Does anyone know what the problem is?

Today I downloaded the newest version from Apple's web site. Installation proceeds normally for awhile then I get the error below (it appears in box labeled " iTunes + QuickTime".
Could not open key:
UNKNOWNComponentsDA42BV89BF25F5BD0AF18C3B9B1A1EE87E577B2224C654E801A9E52375DB49. Verify that you have sufficient access to that key, or contact your support personnel.
I navigated to the key (substituting HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionInstallerUserDataS-1-5-18 for UNKNOWN above) and found 3 instances of the key. 1 had data, 2 were empty. I deleted the 2 empty iterations. I had read about running regedit as an administrator and trying to change the permissions so that the owner was "adminstrators" instead of "system" but was unable to change the ownership (maybe because I have not uninstalled the older version of QuickTime that I used to get things working). Anyway I would like to install the 64 bit version of iTunes now but need to get past this problem. Additional info: I noticed that iTunes 64 bit selected as the install directory C:Program Files (x86) instead of C:Program Files. I have tried installing in each of these directories with the same results.
My system state is now that everything with iTunes in uninstalled with the exception of QuickTime 7.3.1 which I use to run a program that I use often.
I am experiencing a whole deal of difficulty running a clean install of vista ultimate x64.
Now upon install it seems to boot fine and get into the initial install setup of keyboard type (US etc...) and the selection of the OS, I select my HDD to install vista on and the installation goes away copying files and extracting files ... then upon the reboot to setup the rest of windows this is where it all goes terribly wrong, i have had several different errors and BSODs examples are below:

Now i have researched all the errors i have had show up and can define nothing in common with them all, I have removed the X-FI creative sound card, wireless kbd and mouse and gone back to basics, i have checked all my hardware and it IS compatible with x64 but still no luck.
My system consists of:
M/B - PN5-E SLI
PSU - Thermaltake tough power 1100W
CPU - Q6800 quad core
PGU - EN8800GTS x2
ram - 1G x4 kingston ddr2
HDD - WD 500G
i can get no replication of the error it just goes mental on the initial reboot after installing windows, and then reboots over and over, sometimes it gets further and gets back into windows but then i just get told the pc rebooted unexpectedly or the install was interupted to reboot and reinstall, i have tried to repair the half install but still no resolve (the even weirder thing was i tested vista ultimate x86 (32-bit) and all installs fine.
Once I put the CD in the 'Setup' comes on, I press Run, and then click Continue as it needs permission to open the CD..... and that's it. The programme will never open or show an option to install. If I right click onto the icon and click open or install nothing still happens. This is for all CD's that this happens to.
