USB HDD: Copying Data, Programs Started Freezing Up
Jun 9, 2008
Basically I have a 250gb external USB HDD which i have partitioned on HFS+ using MacDrive. Recently I was copying some data across when programs started freezing up and unfortunatly so did the window controlling the transfer. After checking no data was being written to the disc (watched for the red LED) i unplugged it and rebooted the system. When back on my desktop I plugged my HDD back in and when accessing it the majority of data was missing off it and folders were reading ridiculous sizes (40TB for example) although the used space was reading correctly for what is actually on it.
After a day or two of leaving it alone I came back to have another go at fixing it and now vista blue screens every time i connect it, when it's connected on boot it runs chkdisk and has tried to fix it to no avail. Under linux it still reads some to most of the data but i would like to recover as much as possible and don't know how to go about it with the HFS+ partitioning and no access to a mac.

I tryed to boot in safe mode (and i know it was a bad idea) it seemed like it forze agoin while loading the drivers and i had to manualy shut it off again now when ever it starts up all ican do is start windows normaly or lanuch startup repair. now i've tried both, when i try and start normaly a blue screen appeares too fast for me to read something about unable to move something and if i try launch startup repair all i get is a black screen and a mouse and im starting to panic a little bit

This morning I synchronized my Vista 32 Business SP1 laptop with my XP Home SP3 desktop. After finishing some work on the XP desktop I want to re-synchronize data for tomorrow's presentation with the Vista laptop and all I get is an error message with a message that my Server Service is not started. I have no idea why Microsoft thinks that every home user has their own personal network administrator, but anyway, I don't.
So I checked in Services.msc and, yes, Server Services are running. Just to check I paused and resumed, without any change. A ping was good (6 ms) and net view sees all connected machines. I go to the XP desktop and download some files from the laptop without problems. I try accessing the desktop from the Vista laptop and have no connection whatsoever.

Data Protection is a counterfeit application which pretends to be a legitimate security tool. It is also from the same rogue family as Digital Protection, Your Protection, User Protection, Dr. Guard and Paladin Antivirus. The trojan based software starts its activities as soon as it installs onto your computer. Malware has no ability to detect and terminate the parasite. It only gains that user lose their vigilance and would buy a registered version of Data Protection application.
This is a fraud and dangerous for your computer. Behind an offer stands bad people who will use your money for malicious intentions. This application is not worth spending your money. As any malware this one will scan your computer automatically and will show fake results. You should ignore it. Do not fall for this blatant scam. Data Protection can also redirect your web browser to deceptive web pages that advertises “full” version of the security tool. Do not buy it, but choose decent anti-spyware application and terminate Data Protection upon detection. - the conclusion is that Malware bytes does remove it,, you need to download the lastest malware byte or update the one you got. I do not want to see any of the programs at the top of the list of All Programs (especially Internet Explorer). I just want to see the program folders listed, preferably sorted by newest or most recently modified first, by alphabetically would be OK. How to get rid of the 8 programs shown in here? Thanks.

Ive been having a few problems with uninstalling some programs via the add/remove programs tool. For example I have been trying to uninstall Itunes and everytime I do Windows installer says it is preparing to remove and then it stops and a window come up that says "The system administrator has set policies to prevent this installation." and then another one says I do not have sufficient access to uninstall Itunes and to please contact system administrator.
So I spoke to a friend how recommended this forum subject and I followed the Take Ownership steps a few times but to no avail it still does the same thing. I can't update Itunes untill this one is uninstalled!!!!!

I use Vista 32 Ultimate and I have this problem during the startup of Windows: The UAC control stops 2 programs and I'm not able to let these programs load with UAC control active. Tried everything also in Windows defender but no success. I must always confirm and let run these programs clicking on the UAC block tray icon that appear during the load of these 2 programs. Someone tell me that these programs blocked by UAC must be updated from the developers to pass the UAC.

I copied some old jpg photos from a floppy disk and transferred them to a CD since my new computer doesn't have one and not all the photos would open and those that did had a "saw blade" edge to them...large pixels that don't look like that on my old compter. Most of the photos were 40-420mb. Only about 1/3rd would open up and when I tried to open or preview, I got a pop up that said, "Photo gallery can't open this photo or video. The file may be unsupported, damaged or corrupt. I used Nero 6 to do the transfer and never had that problem befofre. Any advise on a solution?

However, I now cannot backup my email. Before I would copy the dbx files and it would take about 10 minutes to do 5gb. Now however - I have 400,000 eml files (I have a lot of email from my web businesses). These eml files are all small. So my problem is that windows first of all takes approx. 2 hours just to calculate the damn size. Then when it eventually starts to copy the files from one location to another (Either on the same RAIDed sata drives, or to another) it estimates days of transfer time left. And I know the calculations are never right, so I left my PC on for 9 hours one night and it wasn't even half way through! It was transferring at 2mb per second! I can upload the data to the internet and back faster than that!
I mean - what the hell? If 98 can do it, me, 2000, xp... what's gone wrong with Vista? So far it's been a pile of junk and it's driving me mad! I'm really trying to like it and make it work, but it's about to be sent back to the shop. So folks - can you tell me why this nonsense? How do i get around it? How can I backup these thousands of tiny files without leaving my PC on for days (I want to do a 10 min backup each day to another sata drive, simple task).

A very frustrating feature of Vista is the inability to copy certain files such as executable files over a network. Any attempt to copy an exe file from the network to an individual computer produces a message that this needs permission but then fails to complete the copy. Is there any way to configure Vista to allow me to copy a exe file form the network to another computer on the network.

Using Vista Ultimate 64bit We have created a bat file that performs multiple XCOPY commands to copy various files all over the network from key servers and workstations to the local machine into a PGP encrypted drive, drive letter V. So a typcical command might be something like: XCOPY \Server_Nameshare namespecial folder*.* V:Special Folder or XCOPY \Server_Namec$another folder*.* V:Another Folder
The local machine has a user logged in as a Domain Admin The network connection is 1gbit We have tried this bat file many different ways.
1) Manual Backup - by that I mean double clicking the bat file to run, sometimes is done and backs up everything in 8 minutes.
2) Scheduled Backup - task scheduler as domain admin DOMAINAdmin Name running with as high a priv as possible - everything backs up in 21 minutes Same scenarios, manual backup runs in 20 minutes, sometimes the scheduled is 40 minutes The local machine is running AV software - CA etrust - which also runs on an XP machine that does not display this speed behavior. The local machine is running Diskeeper 2009. I do not know if this matters, since the benchmarks are so different in each test. I know VIsta now does indexing of files for searching, could this be creating an issue? We have tried different switch ports, different network cables, verified the gbit.

I have a small network consisting of five machines. Two of the computers have Vista Home Premium installed and the others have various flavors of Windows XP installed. Copying and transferring files works flawlessly between the machines except for one of the Xp laptops which has very poor performance when communicating with either of the Vista machines. I can access this computer from either of the Vista machines and transfer files with no problem. However, if I use this laptop to access the Public folder on either of the Vista machines, the throughput is so slow to the point that Windows Explorer will "hang".
In an effort to solve this problem I have: Installed and run Network Magic on both computers...no problems found. I have installed the Link Layer Topology service on the laptop and I have tried disabling the "Autotuning level" on one of the Vista machines all to no avail. The laptop in question has XP Media Center on it with no antivirus or firewall software installed. All ping times are good. All of the computers on the network are connected wirelessly except for one of the Vista machines. I've tried connecting the laptop directly to the router with a cable but still no joy. At this point I am stumped.

I've copied 600 photos from a PC using Windows 2000 to a new laptop using Vista Home Basic. The files were copied from the PC to a flash drive and then to the laptop (to the "Pictures" directory). Trouble is, when this process started all the photos had file names, and when they got to Vista all they had was numbers (sequentially, from 1 to 597). The file names I'd given them are nowhere to be found, and I'm hoping someone can tell me how to fix this problem. Some of the files are very old and need the file namesw for anyone to have any clue about who or what the photo is.

On my PC's HDD I have some files encrypted. Used "folder encryption" that is in one of folder properties selected "Encrypt data..." Folder is shown in green in explorer respectively. In the beginning, when I copied any files from this folder to another location (e.g. USB HDD) files became automatically decrypted, i.e. I could read those files from USB HDD on any other PC.
But now something changed. Though I did not make any changes to security or file system settings, files copied from encrypted folder to USB HDD stay encrypted. That is - I can read them only on PC where I copied them to USB HDD. On other PCs where I connect USB HDD files are not accessible. How can I change it back? I need files copied from encrypted folder to USB HDD to decrypt automatically, because it's backup procedure and I need them accessible on any other PC. How can I stop encryption attribute to be copied together with file?

VISTA HP SP1 x64, and even though I've only been experimenting with Vista since install yesterday, I love it. I have some Data Cd's that were burned on my Windows XP Media Center 2005 SP3 using Nero Essentials 7, ie. some eBooks both in MS Word 2003 and pdf format, 'My Documents' folder and all files (MS Word 2003 mostly), Internet Explorer 7 'Favorites' list. My question is can these files be put into Vista via copying them on the desktop, and dragging and dropping them where I want them? Will Vista even be able to see these files on the disk? I don't even want to try until I get a solid answer as this whole thing is stable as the Rock of Gibralter and I don't want to mess it up.
