Can't Remote Access

Jul 5, 2008

Been experiencing a weird problem the last couple weeks after 6+months of easy remote access to my Vista client via my Windows Home Server. It started when I was using a remote connection on 6/19 and an update came through as I was actively using it. The connection "broke" and I went to log back in. Problem is that I no longer see my usual Vista log-in screen! I can properly log in to the MSS server, access Photo WebShare, see photos in WHIIST, see a (very preliminary) ASP.NET web page, log in to the server, access shared files and "see" my list of clients. BUT, when I try to access the Vista client (the only one that can be remotely accessed) I do not see my normal log-in screen when I am remote. If I go in locally using the IP address then all is normal.

Normally I would see a screen giving me two userids to choose from: John1 & John2. (Guest is disabled, John1 has Administrative privileges, John2 does not.) This is what I see on a local/IP connection but if I go in remotely (or through a loop-back) with the name then I see "Administrator" and "Other". When I go to the other selection I am allowed to enter name and ID but nothing works. Using John1 I get "invalid password" errors. Using John2 I get messages telling me it is not in the correct group for remote access. I created a John3 ID (administrative) to see if that would work, but it doesn't. Initially I thought it was something in the Vista user setups but that makes no sense as I can get in locally with IP addressing. I do not see anything obvious blocked in my Firewall (Windows Live OneCare) of in my router (Linksys WRT-54G v1.1) but those are my current areas of focus. It is almost like I am trying to log into a different client than my own. And it is definitely frustrating. Anyone know what's going on here?

I'm running Vista 32 bit since about one year, I've updated it to SP1 a month ago and it is still very slow. My computer is a Lenovo X61 Tablet with Intel Core Duo and 4 GB RAM. Vista decreased my productivity since this time extremly. Since I am consultant I stick with software, but it really hinders me working. Is there any solution to improve Performance for File Operations, Remote Desktop Access, etc.?

Installing Service Pack1 "access Shared Files"

Jun 30, 2008

I really don't know if the problem is with Verizon, Vista, MS, or something else, but hopefully someone has seen it: Friday, everything was fine. Monday afternoon, big problem. The only major difference was the Vista Service Pack 1 I ran this morning, so maybe that's it. I run the service pack on my Toshiba Satellite laptop (takes an hour or so). The next time I try to use the Verizon Versalink Gateway, it does connect my laptop to my Dell desktop (running XP), and I click on "access shared files". I open the C: directory on my desktop, and in a few seconds the status bar reads "179 items (Disk free space: 91.7 GB)." The problem is that a file showed up about every 15-30 seconds - for 179 files, it took 30 minutes until all files were visible in the panel on the right.

It "sees" that there are 179 files in the directory immediately, but the the dark gray bar CREEPS across the top of the screen, taking forever. If I want a file that starts with "w", I'd be waiting a half an hour for it. I'd be faster driving somewhere and getting two 5.25" floppy drives and installing one on each computer.

Login: "User Profile Service Failed Logon. Access Denied" Message

Jul 23, 2009

My administrator account is my only account on my Dell XPS M1530 laptop. When I try to login I get the "User Profile Service Failed Logon. Access Denied" message. I have attempted to logon in safe mode and it still won't let me logon. Boot the computer in Safe Mode by restarting and repeatedly pressing the F8 key Log in to the built-in Administrator account. If you do not have this account enabled, try logging in to your corrupt account in Safe Mode…it worked for me. Instead of continuing on while logged in to this account, please take the time to enable the built-in Administrator account. To do this, click the Start button in the bottom left corner, type ‘cmd’ in the search area, right-click on the command prompt, and select “Run as administrator”. In the command prompt, type ‘net user administrator /active:yes’ and press enter. Now log off and log back in as Administrator. Once this is done, follow the directions under “Option One: Fix the User Account Profile” at the following link: The User Profile Service failed the logon. User profile cannot be loaded.

Remote Desktop And Getting "This Computer Can't Connect To The Remote Computer

Sep 8, 2009

I am stumped as to an issue I am having using remote desktop. I have several machines in the office that have been using RD for a while without issue. All are XP SP 3 machines. I have a new Vista Ultimate machine that I am trying to remote to with an XP machine. I have set up RD on the Vista Machine, Firewall is checked, forwarded to the correct port, set the port rule on the router...all the typical issues I am aware of. Everytime I try to connect I get "This computer can't connect to the remote computer. Try connecting again. If the problem continues, contact the owner of the remote computer or your network administrator." I can ping the Vista machine and I can remote from the vista machine to any RD enabled machine.

The User Profile Service Service Failed The Login

Jan 24, 2010

I have the following error message when trying to login to vista on my laptop:

The User Profile Service service failed the login.

User profile cannot be loaded.

Just before the problem happened I was working to remove the Anti Virus Live virus from my laptop via the techsupportforum.com forum.

Two things I did within the hour of the problem happening are:

1. I ran the malware removal program OTL

See step 5 at (http://tinyurl.com/pr92qn)

2. I cleared and set system restore's cash-

as instructed in post#23 on my techsupportforum.com thread

(Anti Virus Live on my Laptop - Page 2 - Tech Support Forum)

Further details-I can and am able to login to Safe Mode I do not have a program called System Restore in the System Tools folder In Safe Mode I was able to change my password, but in normal mode I get the same error message I did windows updates and then tried to remove some of those updates, with only a few files that wouldn't allow me to delete them. Thank you for visiting my thread. If anyone has any ideas on how I can fix my problem it would be great to hear about them.

Service That Fails To Start (Bonjour Service)

Apr 16, 2008

I use Vista Ultimate 64.

For the past few weeks I've been having an issue with an Apple made service called "Bonjour Service". That service is used in several pieces of software including iTunes (which I do not use) but also some Adobe applications (Version Cue for example) and the font management utility I use which is Extensis Suitcase 11.0.1 for Windows.

Both Version Cue and Suitcase depend on the Bonjour Service to work and I have had no issues with it for months but recently, the Bonjour Service stopped working and would not start anymore. It now gives this error message when trying to start it:

"('Bonjour Service' failed to start. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to start system services."

My user account is an admin account so privileges is not an issue. I had made no changes to my system myself before the Bonjour service began to "refuse" starting but I remember that I installed a few Windows updates a couple days prior. My machine is always on and I don't re-boot everyday.

So I was wondering if anyone has heard of the issue and knows how I might fix it or if anyone can give me pointers on how I my start trouble shooting this and find what started preventing the Bonjour Service from starting. FWIW, the Windows Firewall is already off and turning off my anti-virus doesn't help (Eset NOD32).

Access Folders Under My Name (set Up As Administrator), Most Of The Time I Get Access Denied

I try to access folders under my name (set up as administrator), most of the time I get access denied. It is driving me nuts. I want to change the start menu and get rid of a bunch of garbage but I can't enter the folder to do so. When I use the start menu program, it only has a few basic folders. This happens frequently, even when trying to view pictures or video in the folder. What do I need to change to remove this very annoying problem?

Remote Assistance From To XP?

Feb 6, 2009

I'm puzzled about something that should be really simple. I'm trying to provide Remote Assistance to someone who has Windows XP, and my PC is running Vista x64, but after making a connection I get a message saying that the other person is away from the computer and did not respond. This message is wrong, because the prompt never pops up on the other end. When I try connecting from the same network using my laptop which is running Windows XP, I am able to successfully connect and control their desktop.

While searching the web I read conflicting things. On the one hand some people say to tweak the Vista auto-tuning setting. That doesn't do anything to fix it. On the other hand, another message says that remote assistance from Vista to XP is not possible. Well if it was not possible then why doesn't Microsoft pop up an error message that says it's attempting to connect to an incompatible operating system? Why instead is there an error message saying that the person didn't respond? Seems like a bug to me..........

Remote Desktop Can't Get Connection

May 30, 2008

I am trying to connect to my Vista Ultimate 32 machine from an XP Professional machine. I can't get a connection or even an attempt at a connection. Here is what I've tried so far.

- I turned off the Windows firewall.
- I am connecting from another computer inside my network.
- I have tried both the (less secure) and (more secure) options in the Remote desktop area.
- I have tried to telnet to my machine to port 3389 and it fails to connect.
- I can ping the machine, see shared directories and connect to remote management.
- I have turned on all services having to do with remote access and terminal services.

So just clarify, it isn't a router issue, I am just trying to connect from one machine to another inside my network. Once I get that working, I will setup the router. I have been searching around for a while trying to find the answer to this problem. I have seen a hundred posts related to this topic but they all seem to end to at "try to telnet to port 3389" with no further responses

Remote Desktop: Static IP

Jan 12, 2010

I'll preface this with the fact I am only so knowledgeable about this IP stuff. I am all my computer challenged family has to rely on so I want to be able to see what happening on about three other computers in three different locations. I am a serious cheapskate so I tried some Shareware called "Anyplace control" worked great through the online account but slow. There is apparently a direct connection option but I need a static ip to make that happen. So keeping it as simplistic as possible for me how do I get my mother Vista laptop, my two daughters Win 7 laptops able to be remote tweaked from either my Vista laptop or XP desktop. I am not locked into that software it was just easiest at the time.
