Destination Folder Access Denied For External Hard Drive

Dec 9, 2008

I edit my external HD sometimes to change names of my files & I get this message.

Destination Folder Access Denied, then I have to click Continue, then in user accounts control it says windows needs your permission to continue & I have to click Continue again. XP didn’t give me this run around, what’s the deal with Vista? I’ve searched but can’t find a fix for this.

I’m the Admin & can’t understand why Vista is treating me like a child & making me double check what I tell it to do. Isn’t my computer a PC or is it now owned by Vista!! That’s frustration coming out but I have other small issues about user unfriendly Vista where XP was user friendly.

Administrator Has "access Denied" To 2nd Hard Drive?

Mar 23, 2008

I m trying to secure some files on a 2nd drive (D drive). I had set it up to block access to everyone but me (the administrator). Now even while logged on as the administrator I can't access the files on the drive. I get a message " D: is not accessible", "Access is denied" What is up with that? So I tried to do a system restore but without getting into pointless details on that, it didn't work.

So Trying to change the D drive security settings back to default I go into Properties, Security, advanced, everything appears to look good as the administrator is set to have "full control" of the drive. I tried a few other logical options on there but nothing has changed.Administrator is still denied access. So now that logic doesn't work, what now?

Open These Folders, I Get: Access Denied

Mar 26, 2008

In Windows Vista Home Premium there appeared new restrictions on some (not all) folders, like Application Data, Desktop, Documents etc. They all seem to have in the lower left corner a little square with a blue arrow pointing toward 2 o???clock. When I try to open these folders, I get: ???Access denied.???

When I check the security of the folders (right clicking the folder and clicking security), I notice that the accessible folders have Gerhard (DesktopGerhard) listed, whereas the non- accessible ones have Every-one. But when I try to add in the non-accessible folder Gerhard (DesktopGerhard), it says:???The following object, Gerhard (DesktopGerhard), is not from a domain listed in the Select Location dialog box and therefore not valid. I???m the only user and have administrative privileges. These restrictions did not exist before.

Access Is Denied, Open Shares Fails

Mar 23, 2008

I have shared 2 partitions and 1 folder on the Vista computer giving unrestricted access. These appear on the XP Pro computer I'm using at this moment. However, every attempt to open these shares fails. The undernoted is message from attempt to open the only folder within partition D: "\G33Program Files is not accessible. You might not have permission to use
this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. Access is denied

OK"

PS I have just shared the DVD drive on the Vista computer and the XP computer can open without trouble. I confirm the Vista partitions and folder are open to "everyone".

Denied Access To All Users By Mistake For C: Drive

Dec 16, 2008

A tiny bit of background story here. My sister is visiting and she has a habit of toying around with and messing my mothers laptop up. Now for what we thought we should do: We created my sister her own account, and I was under the impression that my mums login was an "Administrator". Now I made the mistake of deny access for "all users" to the C: thinking that her login would still have access. So now, I've tried booting in safe mode, opening the cmd prompt as the administrator, type net user administrator /active:yes. I logged in as the new Administrator login, but still cannot make any changes to the permissions on her C:. I can't change the owner either. I cannot create another user even. I'm lost and we can't even do a system restore. Getting which apparently has to do with permissions (gee, what a surprise).

Access Denied: Remove Directory On The Usb Drive

Mar 23, 2008

I tried to do some work with a usb drive that was on a XP Pro system. both system have the same user and password. This user is an administrator on both systems. When I try to remove a directory on the usb drive I get access denied. If i try to look at the level of security for this directory it say that I can't view the security. If I try to run the cmd as administrator and view the security it says access denied. How the heck are you supposed to correct this type of error. The book says to run cmd as administrator. But that does not seem to work. If I knew that XP PRO would work on this laptop I would remove Vista I've never had so much trouble with a new OS.

External Hard Drive: Windows Cannot Access The Specified Device

Feb 28, 2009

I'm having a very strange problem with my External Hard Drives (I have 2). What happens is that I am unable to open either of the external Hard Drives in 'Computer' by double clicking them. It just doesn't do anything. But when I right click and select 'Open' it says: "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item."

EDIT: Forgot to mention that I have checked the security details for the drives and I should be able to access them just fine. But here is where it gets weird. I can right click and select 'Explore' and it will open up like normal and I can browse the folders just fine! I used to be able to access these Hard Drives just fine before, but then they just went like this and I have no idea why. Since it happened to both Hard Drives simultaneously, I figure it is a Vista problem and not related to the specific drives.

Other symptoms are that the icon for the drives no longer shows up in 'Computer', although the name and disk space turn up fine. Also, I've noticed that the drives are operating much slower than usual, nearly a tenth of the normal read/write speed.

WD External Hard Drive Trouble With Read-only Access

Jul 29, 2009

I just got a new HP desktop with 64bit Home Premium. My external, which I loaded from my Dell laptop (with Windows XP), now is all read-only. (The read only box is filled, rather than checked.) I cannot modify any files in he drive, but can access them all. I have already tried the following proposed fixes with no success:

- Right-click on drive; properties; tools tab; check now; unchecked both boxes and started and completed the check with no errors
- Changed drive ownership to administrator
- Changed drive ownership to my personal account

After each of these I tried to clear the read-only box, but the files still can't be modified, and the filled box is back when I re-open the properties on folders inside the drive.

Slow Hard Drive Access Times, Gets Slower With Time!

Oct 11, 2008

this is my 3rd fresh clean install, using both vista x86 and x64, and all new hardware as well (new mobo, hd's, cpu, ram, etc):

symptom:
after a day of two of creating a user account, the hd access starts to become excruciatingly slow, and gets slower with time. when you use explorer and want to access the hard drives, the system takes 3-7 seconds to open the folder. when browsing pictures, it takes 3-6 seconds to switch to the next, etc.
creating a new user account solves the problem temporarily, until a day or two passes, and then the same thing starts to happen!

what i've tried so far:
- disabled indexing (windows search service)
- disabled hard drive indexing
- tried booting up as ide, as well as ahci
- created new install with raid0, and same issue.

system:
* e8400
* asus p5q-e with latest bios
* 2 x 320 wd 3200aaks sata drives, 1 x 250 wd 2500aaks sata drive
* asus sata dvdrw drive
* 4 gb crucial ballistix pc2-6400 (ddr2-800)

i've noticed this problem accelerates even more when using the "sleep" power mode. but even when disabling this, it still happens.

i've googled for over 2 weeks. i've done 3 fresh installs, i've replaced all the hw, and used 3 different copies of vista ultimate, with same results!

update: here is a video of the problem:

Hard Drive Trashing: Hard Drive LED Light On My Sony Vaio Keeps Blinking EVERY SECOND

Feb 10, 2009

The Hard Drive LED light on my Sony Vaio keeps blinking EVERY SECOND. When it's really quiet I can hear it too, it's constantly writing. Constantly. I did my research - read all the threads on the net and so far I have disabled:

Windows index
Windows defender
Windows search
Superfetch
System Restore
Readyboost
Defragmenter
I have uninstalled google desktop.

The system is totally virus and spyware free, and the anti-virus is not scanning (schedule scan disabled). All Vista updates are installed. Nothing has helped. I've run out of things to disable. I'm running Vista Business SP1, Dual Core 2.2 Ghz, 3 Gb RAM.

Can't Remote Access

Jul 5, 2008

Been experiencing a weird problem the last couple weeks after 6+months of easy remote access to my Vista client via my Windows Home Server. It started when I was using a remote connection on 6/19 and an update came through as I was actively using it. The connection "broke" and I went to log back in. Problem is that I no longer see my usual Vista log-in screen! I can properly log in to the MSS server, access Photo WebShare, see photos in WHIIST, see a (very preliminary) ASP.NET web page, log in to the server, access shared files and "see" my list of clients. BUT, when I try to access the Vista client (the only one that can be remotely accessed) I do not see my normal log-in screen when I am remote. If I go in locally using the IP address then all is normal.

Normally I would see a screen giving me two userids to choose from: John1 & John2. (Guest is disabled, John1 has Administrative privileges, John2 does not.) This is what I see on a local/IP connection but if I go in remotely (or through a loop-back) with the name then I see "Administrator" and "Other". When I go to the other selection I am allowed to enter name and ID but nothing works. Using John1 I get "invalid password" errors. Using John2 I get messages telling me it is not in the correct group for remote access. I created a John3 ID (administrative) to see if that would work, but it doesn't. Initially I thought it was something in the Vista user setups but that makes no sense as I can get in locally with IP addressing. I do not see anything obvious blocked in my Firewall (Windows Live OneCare) of in my router (Linksys WRT-54G v1.1) but those are my current areas of focus. It is almost like I am trying to log into a different client than my own. And it is definitely frustrating. Anyone know what's going on here?
