Can't Remote Access
Jul 5, 2008Been experiencing a weird problem the last couple weeks after 6+months of easy remote access to my Vista client via my Windows Home Server. It started when I was using a remote connection on 6/19 and an update came through as I was actively using it. The connection "broke" and I went to log back in. Problem is that I no longer see my usual Vista log-in screen! I can properly log in to the MSS server, access Photo WebShare, see photos in WHIIST, see a (very preliminary) ASP.NET web page, log in to the server, access shared files and "see" my list of clients. BUT, when I try to access the Vista client (the only one that can be remotely accessed) I do not see my normal log-in screen when I am remote. If I go in locally using the IP address then all is normal.
Normally I would see a screen giving me two userids to choose from: John1 & John2. (Guest is disabled, John1 has Administrative privileges, John2 does not.) This is what I see on a local/IP connection but if I go in remotely (or through a loop-back) with the name then I see "Administrator" and "Other". When I go to the other selection I am allowed to enter name and ID but nothing works. Using John1 I get "invalid password" errors. Using John2 I get messages telling me it is not in the correct group for remote access. I created a John3 ID (administrative) to see if that would work, but it doesn't. Initially I thought it was something in the Vista user setups but that makes no sense as I can get in locally with IP addressing. I do not see anything obvious blocked in my Firewall (Windows Live OneCare) of in my router (Linksys WRT-54G v1.1) but those are my current areas of focus. It is almost like I am trying to log into a different client than my own. And it is definitely frustrating. Anyone know what's going on here?

Mar 15, 2009greetings. how can i access parential controls remotely to monitor my childrens activity on thier laptops? the laptops are running windows vista. basic and it is on a LAN connected to the internet. each child has their own laptop. so having me sneek in to thier rooms at night to go in to the admin account just to view thier activity is a pain. but if there was a way to do it remotely it would make things alot simpler.

Mar 23, 2008Installed Vista Ultimate 64 bit over the weekend, dual booting with my XP Pro install, so far I am finding myself liking it more and more. I have set up newsgroups in windows mail, and email access. I really like some of the features of windows mail versus the older Outlook Express, especially the calendar feature, and the spellcheck included. I use Outlook 2002 ( from Office XP ) on my XP Pro install, mainly for the calendar feature, so was pleased to see this included in windows mail. Not going to try to install Office XP on my Vista, as I understand there would be issues with that. I think what I have with Windows Mail though, will serve me ok.
I see where another program, Windows Live Mail is available as well. I checked on the link I found, and really did not see a lot about it. What is the general consensus here, is the Windows Live Mail program much better than the included windows mail program? I don't really understand what the differences are here.
Windows Mail News Group Access
Mar 4, 2009I use Windows mail for my e-mail and news group access. When I access my comcast e-mail (where all the info is correctly entered and stored in the account setup) I have no problem. When I try to access my newsgroup (where all my info is correctly entered and stored in the account setup) a Windows Security window pops up, displays my Vista PC administrator symbol and asks me for a user name and password to access the newsgroup account. I enter the correct info and Windows Security screen will not accept it. I had never ever been asked for a user name and password by a Windows Security Pop Up before and it doesn't ask me for that info on my e-mail.

Mar 5, 2010Where I live, the only newsgroup which I can access is on Microsoft's server; no other newsgroups are offered thru any ISPs (because of POLITIKAL considerations). I know that Google offers browser-based newsgroup review and posting, but its interface is far from the convenience of a traditional newsreader such as Windows Mail, Outlook Express etc. Does anyone know of a way to get around this and access a server by a something like Windows Mail?

Remote Desktop And Getting "This Computer Can't Connect To The Remote Computer
Sep 8, 2009I am stumped as to an issue I am having using remote desktop. I have several machines in the office that have been using RD for a while without issue. All are XP SP 3 machines. I have a new Vista Ultimate machine that I am trying to remote to with an XP machine. I have set up RD on the Vista Machine, Firewall is checked, forwarded to the correct port, set the port rule on the router...all the typical issues I am aware of. Everytime I try to connect I get "This computer can't connect to the remote computer. Try connecting again. If the problem continues, contact the owner of the remote computer or your network administrator." I can ping the Vista machine and I can remote from the vista machine to any RD enabled machine.

May 11, 2008I use Outlook for my e-mails. Unfortunately, Outlook does not have access to news groups. When I go to Mail to get access to the news groups, Mail downloads all of the e-mails since I last used Mail. It may have been weeks since my last use of Mail so the list is rather long (hundreds). Nov 20, 2009Im not really much of a computer wizzkid so pardon me if im not making much sense. I went into tools>account>default mail account>servers tab> My problem started then. Stupidly i changed my password thinking that i would be able to set it to open up and ask me for one when i tried to access my mail. My reaon for this was so others wouldnt be able to see my mail as i constantly forget to lock my laptop when im away from it.
Anyway i clicked apply and close. then i pressed send/recieve to checkif i had any new mail come in. A popup appeared asking for my username and password so i inouted the password that i had just changed. This is not working for me. And i do not know the old password to change back.

Feb 6, 2009My main mail client is my office XP system, I also receive mail in home. So I select the 'Leave mail on Server' in my home XP system and it work fine. But after I upgrade my home PC to Vista system (I export my mail account for XP outlook express then inport it to my Vista system.) then it have problem - when the mail that I received in home Vista system Windows Mail then i no longer can receive in office mail client.
