View 8 RepliesI bought a Dell Inspiron 1501 with Vista on it. It has the typical performance problems that have been noted for laptops running Vista. It receives a "Windows Experience Index" of 2.0. The first thing you are told to do to improve performance is eliminate programs from startup. But when I go through the long list of programs, I often can't tell what they do. For instance, I see in this list "Avantquest
Digital Line Detection," "Dell Quick Set," "Synaptics Pointing Device," and "Java (TM) Platform SE 6U5," among many others. Do I just start experimenting and see what happens when I turn them off? That seems very risky. After all, that "pointing device"--that's my touchpad, isn't it? If I turned off my touchpad, I think my computer would be useless to me, because I do not know how to turn the touchpad on again without the touchpad. In short:is there a way to know which programs would be the best ones to turn off? In case it is not already obvious, I do not know a lot about computers. My experience with Vista has been frustrating, because I feel like I do not have the specialized technical training required to make my laptop work well.
My OS is Windows Vista Business and I am attempting to disable the auto startup of a program. I located the program in Windows Defender, Category: Startup Programs but all options to "Remove, Disable and Enable" are grayed out. I also noticed the majority though not all auto startup programs in the Startup Category are grayed out. Why is this? What other course of action may I take to disable the unneeded auto startup of unnecessary programs? Also, my inquiry pertains specifically to an HP Digital Camera software.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI am running Vista 64 and installed a program which apparently had a virus or I got it using IE8. I found an entry in the start up tab that was causing a problem. I went into the registry and deleted the item from the startup tab and I also disabled it in the startup tab. The startup tab still shows the item even though it is disabled and deleted from the registry. Why does it still show in MSCONFIG and how do I delete it from the start up entry
View 5 Replies View RelatedIve been having a few problems with uninstalling some programs via the add/remove programs tool. For example I have been trying to uninstall Itunes and everytime I do Windows installer says it is preparing to remove and then it stops and a window come up that says "The system administrator has set policies to prevent this installation." and then another one says I do not have sufficient access to uninstall Itunes and to please contact system administrator.
So I spoke to a friend how recommended this forum subject and I followed the Take Ownership steps a few times but to no avail it still does the same thing. I can't update Itunes untill this one is uninstalled!!!!!
I bought a computer off the shelf at Frys with Vista Home Premium. Now Frys name keeps popping up and I want to know how to remove it permenatly. I opened the Registry where I found it under C:UsersfrysAppDataLocalTemp. I have saved the Registry by exporting it to a second drive. Now, what is the best way to remove frys or replace it with my name?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a VBS startup script that works fine with Win 2000, XP, 2003 but will not function properly on Vista. The startup script's purpose is to load the registry hive of the Default User (Default for Vista) profile, make a change and unload the hive. If I manually run the VBS script on Vista it works fine, however when I run it as a startup script it fails. Specifically the startup script is failing at loading the default user profile hive.
Does anyone know what has changed in Windows Vista that prevents the loading of a registry hive durring a startup script? I have tried putting in a delay, however this didn't correct the issue. I am using reg.exe to load the hive.
Possibly I should have read a few forums and tutorials when I first got my new Vista computer before downloading and installing a bunch of programs, but alas I didn't and now I have something of a mess. I have some program files installed to my user account, I have some installed to the Admin account because I couldn't install them to my user account, and now I have some programs that absolutely must be installed to the user account in order to work properly but can't be because of the whole Denial of Administrator Privileges that has been brought into the picture with Vista.
I also strongly suspect some program files got installed twice also. Maybe not, but when I configure a program in my user account (like iTunes or Microsoft Outlook) those changes are not evident on the admin account. And an outrageous amount of the space on my C drive has eaten up already, much more than I suspect I've actually installed. Basically, I would really, really love to get all of the program files onto one account, preferably the Admin account, make sure any duplicates are taken care of, and otherwise clean it up because i don't want a big sluggish registry mess within a month of owning this computer. Something like that?
which program exactly do i need to uninstall to get rid of this pesky window popping up. I saw the explanation and in the forum between ken and poopsie

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have been trying for a week unsuccessfully to remove programs from my computer. I have Windows Vista Home Premium 32 bit OS. Each time I try to uninstall a program it tells me that the system administrator has set policies to prevent this. Now I am the only one using this computer and I check and it shows that I am the administrator and there are no other accounts on this computer. Is there anyway to do this?
View 5 Replies View RelatedIn Windows Vista, are programs all tied in with each other as they are in XP? What I really mean is this: If I were to go to Vista, can I remove associated programs such as Outlook Express, Internet Explorer and/or other programs which just occupy space on my computer, but which I never use?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI purchased the Upgrade version. I have XP service pack 3 installed right now. I know there's a work around that allows the upgrade version to be used for a clean install. I was wondering if upgrading the normal way over XP will basically be the same as a clean install. Will it wipe my drive clean or will there still be remnants left such as drivers, programs, registry keys, etc? Also, if I ever wanted to do a clean install, which shouldn't be a problem legally since I own XP, would it basically be the same as doing so with the full version? Another question I have is about manually maintaining my system. I've read that Vista isn't like XP in that I don't need registry cleaners or spyware cleaners. Is this true? I have a habit of using these things frequently to keep my comp as speedy as possible.
Not much, just Auslogics Boost Speed, AVG, and zone alarm. Those are my mainstays. I also have ad-aware and CCleaner just in case. Would AVG and zone alarm still be good programs to use? I find that they do very well in keeping my system protected.I must admit, I was among those that talked about Vista like it was crap and I haven't even tried it much. It was mostly from what I've heard. It wasn't until I read that article at tweakguides.com, ( TweakGuides.com - Vista Annoyances Resolved ) about Vista that I decided to take the plunge and go for it. Made me feel like an idiot but it gave me the true info without the BS.
I want to remove some programs from the autoplay menu but don't want to uninstall, for example Nero but just remove Nero's photoscap viewer from the menu when I insert an SD card to upload images. I'd rather Nikon's ViewNX were on the menu but it isn't. Any ideas how to get it there? Windows Vista help only tells me how to change autoplay defaults, not how to list or unlist on the autofault menu.
