Restart To Get It To Work And Show Up Again
May 17, 2008I have had less issues with my vista than I ever did with my xp. First, I have a card reader that is hooked up to the usb internal port. I can read sd cards etc. with it. My problem is that if I take out the card and then want to put it back in later the card reader goes away out of my view window under my computer. I then have to unplug my card reader from my mother board and then get lucky and log off and log back in or sometimes have to restart to get it to work and show up again. Does anyone care to comment on this My second problem is that if I put in a cd or dvd it will not auto play. I have to go into my computer and double click or go to media player and whatever player I decide and hit play.

Jan 31, 2008I am networking Vista and XP. Everything seems to be working EXCEPT the XP computer does not show up in in the Vista network folder. I can access the XP computer by entering \computername in the "start search" box, after which I see all the XP shared files and can access the files as expected. When I run the "map complete network" function, the network map is correct and shows the switch, XP computer, and Vista computer. The XP side works 100%
The only problem is that on the Vista side when you open an explorer window and click on Network, the XP computer doesn't show up. For purposes of debugging, both firewalls are off. Authentication is set to NTLMv1 level, and the XP LLTD patch has been applied.
Choosing New Graphics Card
Jun 15, 2009I'm looking to invest in a new graphics card i have a max of about £130 i want to spend but there are a few issues first off, my pc comes with a ****ty dell 350w PSU which has one graphics power connector now i did a PSU calculator with the card i want to buy>>Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 4870 1GB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Cardand it says it should come under 350 but i would like your opinions. Also is that the best card i can get for the cash? i would prefer ATI but would be willing to go over to Nvidia. i currently have a HD radeon 2600 XT which is a slim one, depth wise anything would fit, but i think a longer card would have a hard time fitting.

Apr 13, 2008I have pictures I want to upload but my computer won't let me choose the ones I want. The setting that used to work, but appearently doesn't anymore, uploaded the recent pictures on my camera. Now, it uploads all of my pictures instead of the most recent. I already read a recent "discussion" about this problem but my questions still go unanswered. I do not edit my pictures in anyway before I upload them.

Apr 23, 2009I'm running Vista 32 bit on my hp notebook but i have some programs that are not compatible with it yet, so i decided to partition my hardrive and have xp on one of the partitions. so now C: is vista D: is xp and i think F: is recovery but it was D::confused: anyway the problem im having is trying to boot back into vista.....iv gone into BIOS and had a look for booting options but it just lists the name of the HDD and not the partitions.....Anyone know how to select what partition you want to boot from?? Because it auto boots from the xp partition and i can see that in disk manager but not sure how i can change it back to C:

Oct 11, 2009we are getting cable internet (charter) and need to get our own modem. suggestions on brands n models? not doing anything fancy just internet. we are getting 5mbps service, wanted 10 mbps but they whack us with a jack up charge for not getting a package with tv. we dont watch tv, only want internet.... so modem choice?btw they run they wire n we just plug their cable in one side and another into the computer?

May 16, 2008I bought a Dell Inspiron 1501 with Vista on it. It has the typical performance problems that have been noted for laptops running Vista. It receives a "Windows Experience Index" of 2.0. The first thing you are told to do to improve performance is eliminate programs from startup. But when I go through the long list of programs, I often can't tell what they do. For instance, I see in this list "Avantquest
Digital Line Detection," "Dell Quick Set," "Synaptics Pointing Device," and "Java (TM) Platform SE 6U5," among many others. Do I just start experimenting and see what happens when I turn them off? That seems very risky. After all, that "pointing device"--that's my touchpad, isn't it? If I turned off my touchpad, I think my computer would be useless to me, because I do not know how to turn the touchpad on again without the touchpad. In short:is there a way to know which programs would be the best ones to turn off? In case it is not already obvious, I do not know a lot about computers. My experience with Vista has been frustrating, because I feel like I do not have the specialized technical training required to make my laptop work well.
Choosing Recipients From Contacts Folder
Nov 17, 2009I have many contacts and the list is to long to scroll through to select email recipients. Since the advent of Windows Mail, to easily select recipients from contacts folders, I have been selecting them (highlighting them with CTRL & mouse click) and then using the File, Action, Send Email options. This opened a new message with the selected recipients. This is no longer working.

Dec 17, 2008flat panel LCD monitor's native resolution is 1280X1024. However, when I set Vista to that resolution, the text and everything else is very, very small. The next best resoultion (i.e., without elongation distortion) is 1152X864. I thought that in order to maximize one's screen picture, one should run at native resolution, but this doesn't seem to be the case. I also do a little photo processing and want the best screen resolution for that. It seems that if I want undistorted screen images and reasonable sized text, I have to compromise with 1152X864; or am I missing something?

Apr 10, 2010In desperation, after not getting the answer on the Vista.Genearl group, I'm posting this to as many groups as I think may be able to help as I suspect that the problem could occur in any MS operating system and is not Vista specific. It might just even be associated with MS Word itself.
The problem is as stated in the subject. After I did a factory reformat of a pre-installed Vista Home Premium on an Acer Aspire L3600 and re-installed my apps, including MS Office 2007 Plus I found that when I right-click the desktop and choose "New", most of options to open a new folder, shortcut, Bitmap Image and documents in the Office suite are there except for MS Word. It used to be there, now it's not and as far as I can see it is the only one missing.
In fact Word shows up when I installed MS Office on my wife's Dell laptop as a test. I've un- and re-installed the entire Office suite to no avail. How has this happened, but more importantly, how can I get it back in the list? It's the feature of the right-click procedure, other than opening a new folder, that I find the most useful.
Group Contacts: No Option Of Choosing To Add Group
Mar 23, 2008We are having trouble adding new groups in Windows Mail. For some reason, it no longer gives us the option of choosing to add a group instead of a single contact. I've clicked on "File" then "New" but "Contact Group" or "Group" is not an option, nor is there a group button on the toolbar. Is there a problem with our settings? We used to be able to add them and now we can't unless we copy an existing group.

Jul 1, 2008I have been wracking my brain for weeks now, trying to play C&C First Decade with Red Alert 2 Yuri's Revenge over the LAN, it will only run on IPX networking which I could setup with 2x XP machines, I have Vista Ultimate on my PC, and XP on another, I found some drivers for IPX to work on Vista, didn't work ... So I loaded Hamachi which had built-in IPX support. Now when I open RA2, it no longer says IPX unavailable, it shows 00 00 00...
So it can see my Hamachi adapter with IPX support, great! The other XP machine has Hamachi installed, and they are both VPN'd (Connected) on the same Hamachi Network. They don't see each other... The XP machine shows a few IPX networks, I have tried switching to them all, even put the Hamachi adapter and the LAN adapter to the top of the preferred networks list. This was sort-of a breeze with both XP, but with Vista it's looking to be a bit tricky. I have no firewalls running on either machine and I am pretty cluey when it comes to networking (TCP/IP that is).
Speakers Work But Headphones Dosent Work

Why Does 4GB RAM Only Show As 3GB?

installed RAM but I was under the impression that you should see between 3.1
and 3.5GB. My new Dell Precision laptop has 4GB RAM but only shows exactly
3GB. The BIOS reports 4GB.
MMC Will Not Show Up

Can't Show The Ram
Mar 23, 2008I have x86 homepremium, and like when i had 64, i still get tons of errors from my ram (its bad ram, and i beleive its cuz its 4GB too) Anyways, what should I do, I have 2 Slots, but I want 3GB and it has to be DDR2.. Would it be effeicent to go 1(2GB PC-5200 DDR2SD 667) and 1(1GB PC-5200 DDR2SD 667? OR should i simply just do the same but have it 1GB and 1 GB instead of 2 and 1 or does that not work well with dual channel sorry for my lack of knowledge

When I installed the Google Toolbar, it showed up at the installment, but then when I relaunched IE 8 Google toolbar was not there. It also was not in the "Add Ons". But was in my Programs. I uninstalled and reinstalled two more times and it will not show up in IE 8. I had MSN as my home page , so I had to change the home page to Google in order to have my mail. I have gmail. I had Vista check the drivers and it said they were good. I'm only good enough on the computer to follow explicit instructions. I'm forwarding some mail from my desktop using Outlook in XP to my laptop using Vista and 9 times out of 10 attachments aren't being received. Aug 10, 2009Issues With Vista Windows Mail And IE Explorer, About a week ago when I clicked on internet explorer (v.7) to get on the internet, it would time out and not even bring up the white page. After troubleshooting everything without results, I downloaded Firefox and began using that temporarily. I had tried to download IE v 8 with no luck.. Now when I try to send an email, windows mail will not allow me to put the cursor down where the message is to be written.
I also discovered that if I ran IE “Run as Administrator” it will work, but will not allow me to use the cursor to input text, like in a google search etc. I was going to go into options on internet explorer and reset to default settings, but the tool bar does not show up?? I tried to download IE v 7 and got a message that it was incompatible with my OS! Got the same message when I tried to download IE v8 again. I don’t know if all these issues are related or not.
