I have set up a network with my PC (Vista) and my laptop (Vista). I have files set to share. But when I try to find my PC from my laptop or when I try to find my laptop from my PC so I can use the shared files, they do not show up on the network map.
View 4 RepliesI'm trying to network my new Optiplex 740 with Vista Business (32bit), and Norton 360, to my old Euro PC with W2K Pro. and SystemWorks, using basic Belkin /Realtek cards and yellow ethernet cable. My broadband connection is through my old machine and works perfectly, as does the network card installation.
My new machine also indicates that its card is correctly installed and functioning correctly. BUT the Network and Sharing Center window shows this computer as linked to an Unidentified network and no connection to either the other computer or broadband connection.........
The way I see it, the more info I give the more likely a good fix. I recently bought a laptop, and guessed I'd sort out a network with the existing comp (how hard can it be?) I have internet access on main PC (Cat V wired), and laptop (wireless), but when I open network and sharing centre to try to access "the other" comp, the network won't show the other comp. From my laptop I have "laptop"(This Computer) - "Office" - "Internet". When I click on "Office" to show the network I get a list with "laptop", Siemens SE572 Wireless Router & Orb: Office. The first 2 listings are correct, but Orb: Office isn't, and it also shows as a Windows Media Player, I've tried everything I can think of but can't get rid of the "Orb: Office", which seems to be stopping my PC and laptop talking to each other. If I haven't bored you to death by now, as I'm gonna quickly get sick of having to drop everything onto a memory stick, and transferring to main pc to print etc.

But when i tried to connect with Vista it just says that the folder isnt valid. I know this isnt true because i have connected to it already. Does anyone know what i can do? View 4 Replies View RelatedEverything went ok on my new computer with vista for about 4 months, and all of a sudden one day the internet went down, so I thought it was the wireless receiver, so i got another and found out this wasnt the problem. It happens that windows doesnt list any of the existing networks as if the receiver didnt work, it says yhe wireless option isnt on and cant seem to turn it on. I also came across some wlansvc thing which might be the problem but havent found any resource or solution to my problem.

I've bridged my wireless and ethernet connections to connect my xbox360 to the internet. This worked fine before on this laptop but now it don't! I've enabled compatibility mode via netsh but I still get "network cable unplugged" on MAC Bridge Miniport immediately after I create the bridge. The wireless network works just fine when I remove the bridge. I have the latest drivers and SP.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI've just recently encountered a problem connecting to the internet with my notebook and when I check to see what was wrong my computer says I'm not connected to any networks. So when I try to connect my computer doesn't show my wireless network it says a cable is not plugged into the network adapter 'local area connection". However everything is plugged in and my mom's notebook has no problem. Also it says that my computer doesn't have a wireless adapter installed and configured but it does and when I go to the properties it says the device is working properly. I don't know what to do anymore. I've restarted my computer and unplugged and replugged the cable and disabled and enabled the adapter.

When I run the wizard to connect to a network, it does not show the add ad-hoc network option, only four others for wireles, internet and vpn connection. Also, although I have networked two PC's both running Vista, I cannot ping the second machine from the first and vice versa despite having added routes to both machines. nslookup recognises the ip address of each machine, as does tracert(I should point out that both machines obtain their iP addresses from a router which also allows access to the internet. Both machines can see the internet).
View 4 Replies View RelatedI am networking Vista and XP. Everything seems to be working EXCEPT the XP computer does not show up in in the Vista network folder. I can access the XP computer by entering \computername in the "start search" box, after which I see all the XP shared files and can access the files as expected. When I run the "map complete network" function, the network map is correct and shows the switch, XP computer, and Vista computer. The XP side works 100%
The only problem is that on the Vista side when you open an explorer window and click on Network, the XP computer doesn't show up. For purposes of debugging, both firewalls are off. Authentication is set to NTLMv1 level, and the XP LLTD patch has been applied.
My home PC, running Vista and wired to the network, drops momentarily from my home network and looses the connection to the network printer. Usually happens when I click a link to a new page. An error comes up saying something like "page unavailable". I hit "refresh" and the page loads. I can sit at the PC and watch the network Icon in the system tray show up with a "red X" and then the red x disappears. The interesting thing is that my two laptops run wirelessly and wired to the network with out an issue. I am guessing it has to be something with the settings off myPC ethernet card? I tried updating drivers, but no new driver was available.
View 4 Replies View RelatedOne of my friends has a media sharing problem with an XP Home (sp3) MCE 2005, WMP 11 desktop. I've tried to help him by setting up consistent user accounts (passworded) but it doesn't seem to solve the problem. In a nutshell, his network shows his desktop as both a computer and a media device and it seems he has more shares than I think is wise -- he has disks, folders, files, all marked as share with full control permissions to everyone. He also has tried to solve his problem by consolidating media, but put it all in the "all users" tree instead of with a single user. In short, I'm not sure what he has shared and where he has it.
As a result his music and pix seem to share on the network ok, but he gets duplicate entries in wmp and conflicts when trying to stream video on his network. Maybe this last problem is because of multiple shared videos with the same name maybe in multiple locations (or as multiple users)? So here are my two questions. First, is there an easy way I can help him turn off all sharing and start over? And second, does it matter that his desktop shows up as a media device AND as a computer? If so, how can he fix that problem?
Is my first post and i have a problem with avi file icon. I am from Cyprus and my english its not very good. Some of my avi files show a picture and some others show a black icon. I did not have this problem before. Before all my avi files show a picture. I have K-Lite Mega Codec Pack (new version). I try Vista Codec but i can solve it. I have file sharing/network discovery on, private network, password protection disabled, my shares set to everyone and everyone is on the same workgroup. My problem is that the x64 Vista computer will not see any of the XP (x86 or x64) computers and they can't see it from the Network Neighbourhood. However, if I type the IP address of the XP computers I
can access them. On the XP computers if I type the IP address I get an error that it isn't accessable and I might not have permission. However, if I type \192.168.0.100share or any of the other share names I access it just fine. pinging works too by IP but not by name. If I boot into the x86 install of have of Vista I can access XP computers from Vista and the Vista from XP by name and everything without typing any user names. The only differince between the two aside from x64 and x86 is that x86 isn't patched past SP1 as I don't use it often. Lastly after installing that XP patch I can see the x86 XP computers by name from the network map feature on Vista, still can't access them by name though...
I'm using Vista Home Premium and Windows Update tells me I'm up to date.
Every so often the Network icon in the System Tray tells me that it is not connected to a Network (by displaying a red X) though I can clearly see that I am.
I have bought DD a laptop for Christmas and thought I'd get it all set up beforehand. I already have a wireless network here at home, with 2 desktops running xp) and a macbook, they connect via a belkin wireless modem router. View 9 Replies View RelatedOne usb ethernet adapter for internet connection through an old router, one for a Linksys Wireless G router hard wired to remote security cameras sums up the problem where one cancels the other out. This is a problem for XP, Vista, and even 7 beta while the primary system still runs XP. The dsl connection is through an old dsl setup using a usb adapter while the Linksys pci adapter card or usb adapter once installed becomes the default network adapter.
The wireless router itself is plugged with the RJ-45 ethernet adapter directly into the main controller/dvr box for live wireless feed to the main XP system or this one as a second means along with direct plug in to a tv set in the room where the main box is located. In XP, Vista, and even the later 7 beta the same problem of running two adapters without conflict is the main question needing a working solution. This thread is intended to tax the most network familar people here.
The landlord runs the main XP system with eventual plans to upgrade to Vista while this system serves as a testing machine a good deal of the time explaining multiple OSs as a rule. The router and adapters are in working order not seeing any defects while canceling the original dsl adapter out when installed. That takes out the online connection in the process.
Bought a Freecom Network Drive (LINK) from PC World today and got it set up and it seemed to be working fine on my Vista computer until I tryed to get it set up on my XP computer. It seemed to get setup ok but then the whole thing just stopped working. The hard drive spines and it works fine when plugged in as USB device but when trying to connect it to the network it simply does not show up. I have a Belkin G+MIMO Router and the Network Hard Drive is a Freecom Network Storage Hard Drive 250GB
Just returned from holiday and while we were away I changed my laptop network in vista from private to public as advised and the internet worked fine. Now at home I can’t connect to my router, and I get a message saying that the details held on the computer is not the same as the router. Also there is no “customise” function being shown on the network and sharing centre screen to switch back to private network. I’ve tried everything to set up a connection, even a new one, but the same message appears all the time.

I know that when using 32-bit Vista you can't expect to see all 4GB of
installed RAM but I was under the impression that you should see between 3.1
and 3.5GB. My new Dell Precision laptop has 4GB RAM but only shows exactly
3GB. The BIOS reports 4GB.
So my MMC will not open. I click on it then UAC opens then nothing. I have run sfc /SCANNOW it can not fix the issues I will posted results. I want to fix this without reinstalling windows any solution come to mind.

I have x86 homepremium, and like when i had 64, i still get tons of errors from my ram (its bad ram, and i beleive its cuz its 4GB too) Anyways, what should I do, I have 2 Slots, but I want 3GB and it has to be DDR2.. Would it be effeicent to go 1(2GB PC-5200 DDR2SD 667) and 1(1GB PC-5200 DDR2SD 667? OR should i simply just do the same but have it 1GB and 1 GB instead of 2 and 1 or does that not work well with dual channel sorry for my lack of knowledge

When I installed the Google Toolbar, it showed up at the installment, but then when I relaunched IE 8 Google toolbar was not there. It also was not in the "Add Ons". But was in my Programs. I uninstalled and reinstalled two more times and it will not show up in IE 8. I had MSN as my home page , so I had to change the home page to Google in order to have my mail. I have gmail. So what is wrong here?

I had Vista check the drivers and it said they were good. I'm only good enough on the computer to follow explicit instructions. When I put a CD in the drive the light will come on like it's reading but then goes off and it does nothing.

I'm forwarding some mail from my desktop using Outlook in XP to my laptop using Vista and 9 times out of 10 attachments aren't being received. They don't show as blocked or anything they're just not there. They are in the sent items on my desktop. I've turned off email scanning in Norton and changed the settings re reading, etc, in windows mail with absolutely no change.
