Dec 6, 2008I have an HP dv5-1000us running Vista Home Premium 64, and I've had it for several months. Recently it has developed a tendancy to randomly freeze solid (no control alt delete, no coming back from being frozen, must hard restart). It got much worse when I tried to install the new Zune update (3.1); now it will freeze like clockwork about 3 minutes after I open Zune. If I don't open Zune, it's much more random but it still happens. Another symptom is that I started getting a message that my sound driver software had to close due to a "problem". Sound still works, I just get the annoying message. Nothing I do seems to fix it, including Bios flashing, driver/device install/reinstall, etc.
I was really surprised when I looked at the system monitor. I have 4 gigs of RAM installed, and it runs at a steady 1.7gb usage with no programs open. I have disabled the animation stuff, too. When I open Zune it shoots up to around 2gb. The processor varies between 4 to 20% with no programs open, and is at 95-99% when Zune is open. As I'm typing this, I have flock, skype, and outlook open, the processor is running at about 30% and the RAM usage holds at a steady 1.76gb. Question: Is this normal? Or is it time (already) to bust out the restore disks?

Oct 13, 2009i have a 4870 right now and im looking to get a second one (yeah i know 5000 series are out but w/e) i heard if u crossfire 2 cards u can only get 1 display is this true? im pretty sure it is but anyway im gettign a second monitor and i was wondering if its possible to switch off from crossfire to normal so i can game on a single one and then just watch while watchign vids on Internet on the second just like that? or would i be better off not crossfiring @ all. and if i dont corssfire what would be my fps boost?

Jul 26, 2008about a week ago my screen on my 6 month old laptop started looking stretched horizontally, I swear I didn't change any settings and have looked at the DPI and resolution to see whether that helps. Everything just looks wider and slightly out of focus, I'd really love it to be back to normal!

Will boot fine into safe mode/sm w networking..
Normal boot just sits at loading screen..
Have tried:
Disabling all startup apps and services -same
System restore as far back as it will go - completed, but the same
Recovery functions from boot menu - complete, but the same
Last known good config - same
Disable Driver Signature Enforcement - same
Enable low resolution video - same
Biggest problem is no Toshiba/MS restore CD/DVD available.
I do have a clean copy of XP I could try.
I have no problem formatting and starting over w XP, but it just seems like if it will boot to safe mode, it should be fixable ... software/drivers being the issue.
Bringing Things Back To Normal
Oct 4, 2009To make this short, I just have two basic questions, for now...
1. How far can someone go in formatting a drive on their computer?
2. Let's say you bought a computer and it came with it all the necessary cds, which I think is the case with most computer purchases. Could you go as far as you can with formatting all the drives (C: drive, E: recovery drive, etc.) on the computer, and bring it back to normal with those cds (cds containing windows, dell software, etc.) of course disregarding other downloaded files like word docs, videos + music etc.?
Bootup - What's Normal Screen Logo?
Mar 24, 2008I've checked and General is "normal" and boot is not ticked.I get about 15 secs of blackness, 5 secs of progress bar at the bottom,another 10 secs of blackness and then Vista.If I tick no gui in boot, I get "aurora" for the whole duration with no progress bar.

Mar 23, 2008My windows vista has one user account and one admin account, i've reccently installed the game 'audition' which is known as an 'unidentified program from an unidentified publisher' to play in both accounts but this game is always block or rather requires a permission to 'allow' the program to be run or requests for the adminstrators permission to run the program, and there is a popup window telling me that i change to control settings about allowing the game to run without prompting anymore in the future at 'user account controls' but i just can't seem to find the place to chnage the settings,

Mar 23, 2008I use the Pictures folder alot on my Vista based computer, and recently I was sorting through some of the pictures, deciding which ones to keep and which to delete. Most of these I have copied from my digital camera, and some I have downloaded from the web. Well, after having gone through them all, there is at least one in particular that I cannot seem to delete. I don't want it to just be sent to the Recycle Bin, but completely erased from the computer. I have discounted any viruses or spyware, and checked all my 'Folder' settings, but nothing I can think of to do will remove this file from the folder. It also does not actually show up in normal viewing, only if i do a search using special variables. It only shows up if I type, "*.jpg" into the search bar when I am viewing the directory. I can't however do anything with the file. I can't move it, I can't rename it, and while it shows a thumbnail image of the photo, when I click on it to open it, the picture viewer shows no photo-representation. I also can't replace it with another file with the same exact name. How do I permanently remove this one file? And how did it get to the point of being undeletable. File properties do not show that it is 'hidden' or 'read only'.

After a day (today many of my desktop and start menu and explorer icons show either the default windows UGLY icon or that icon on TOP of the normal icon. Feb 14, 2010while I was playing my computer suddenly restarted but it wasnīt a normal restart cuz the screen just went black and nothing happened, after waiting several minutes I had to shut it down. When I turned it on nothing happened again and my screen went black so I kept trying to restart it andfinally after some attempts I got it to start but while it was loading vista a blue screen appeared and it restarted again. So I managed to restart it on safe mode and I got this blue screen again and a restart. Post Sleep/hibernation Status Is Not Normal
Nov 20, 2008When I wake up Laptop from hibernation or sleep or screen saver, IE and START button are non-responsive. I have to activate task manager and click "look for solution" which re-activates IE but makes me lose everything I was working on prior to sleep/hibernation or screensaver. Or I shut down manually using power button, then re-start/reboot. Have I programmed my PC incorrectly to sleep/hibernate or is it intrinsic VISTA prob?

Jul 4, 2009my gfx card temps are a little worrying. Playing a company of heroes 40 minute long game with 8 players on a large map, my temps go up to about 80c. But it always idles around 70c even when ive just turned my pc on. even the gt200 cards get a lower idle reading than this, and mines only an 8800gts 512card. I dont think its a stuck sensor either, because if i open up my pc, i cant even touch the heatsink because its so hot.

Yesterday the screen became stuck and unresponsive, I switched the computer off then on and after the normal repair / assessment of disk errors etc tried to log-on, the screen got to welcome with active cursor but got no further.
