I noticed that the past few days that when I boot up my computer my icons appear and then all flash to white pieces of paper once then go back to normal. I was wondering what was causing this, and is it normal?
View 5 RepliesI am also having a problem with my desktop icons and have tried everything recommened to get them back to the way that they were when I got my computer and nothing seems to be working. They all of a sudden changed on me and I want them back to the way that they were.
View 6 Replies View RelatedCould anyone tell me why some of my desk top and menu icons have changed from the originals to just blank pieces of paper? Only some of my icons have changed such as my Internet Explorer, Firefox, Microsoft Office, Adobe Photoshop, etc. but not all. I have tried to change the icons through the properties menu but do not see the original icon available as an option and could not locate it in the system files anywhere. I have researched somewhat online and found threads in other forums that indicate the IconCache.db needs to be either deleted or rebuilt but at the same time found comments to both fixes that say neither one really works.
I did try to follow one of these instructions just to see if I could locate this cache file but could not find it in my UserAppDataLocal file they indicate it should be in. I am far from being a computer tech type so I've been unable to figure this out and apparently need some expert assistance! Does anyone know of an easy fix to my problem that does work?
I've recently installed an update for my computer - vista SP1, and after installing my icons (such as internet explorer, itunes, the sims) have been replaced with smaller white icons on top. (The icons which usually appear when a file cannot open - ie unrecognised). Is there a way to remove these smaller white icons? or should i just uninstalling vista SP1 altogether (will this be bad for the computer?)
View 4 Replies View RelatedNot terribly important (I can liev with black & white icons), but annoyance indeed and only started recently. It does NOT affect WindowsExplorer/Filemanager icons for folders, files, etc. Those have been and are fine 100%. Just the mouse right-click, now shows weird black&white icons, icons themselves are OK, colors are not. Difficult to see quickly what to click as I used to know by color what is what. For example right-click on empty space in Windows Explorer and select "new text Document" - the icon for it is a very bleak, black & whit eone. Use to be vivid greenish/bluish.

1. How far can someone go in formatting a drive on their computer?
2. Let's say you bought a computer and it came with it all the necessary cds, which I think is the case with most computer purchases. Could you go as far as you can with formatting all the drives (C: drive, E: recovery drive, etc.) on the computer, and bring it back to normal with those cds (cds containing windows, dell software, etc.) of course disregarding other downloaded files like word docs, videos + music etc.?
For some unknown reason, my desktop icons have white boxes infront of the Icons. I've searched and I havent found any fixes (or similar problems). The first pic is normal size, the second is with larger icons, so you can tell the Normal Icon is behind the white box.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have asked many questions here recently , and I finally GAVE UP fixing Vista, and reinstalled it for the 4th time. It just commits suicide whenever it wants. I even replaced my Motherboard/drives/video hardware and it still suicides out. I reinstalled Vista, this time I also installed SP1. After a day (today many of my desktop and start menu and explorer icons show either the default windows UGLY icon or that icon on TOP of the normal icon. I had this installed one day and already issues come, this one is visual.

If I switch the View to medium or extra large file icons they appear normal and when I switch the view back to large, they again appear normal. However, after a few minutes, when I open the same folder, they are again all white (blank).

View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm using the onboard intel graphics with the VGA out to my VGA display. This problem has only started happening within the last 20-ish days or so. The display will periodicly flash black for a secound & then back on again? it's almost like changing your screen resolution but with no apparent resizing taking place, although it does seem to happen mostly when I expand windows more than any other time. Everything still carrys on as normal on the computer when this display blackout happens.
I have tested my ram with memtest to rule out ram problems as it's new. I'm not getting any errors to suggest theres some ram issues or any related symptoms for ram associated problems. anyway & it's now past 3 memtest sessions with no errors. I have also carried out orhtos & prime95 test just to stress the Ram & CPU to see if I got any errors reported with nothing reported. Only once did a blackout happen during testing when I was maximizing a window but the test reported nothing?
PC has problem displaying flash drive icons correctly in file open and file save dialog boxes. There are 4 flash drives (Compact Flash, SD, Memory Stick, and xD/SM). The 4 drives'icons display fine from Windows Explorer but all 4 drive icons are missing in File Open and File Save dialog boxes. The problem exists in every application's file open and file save that I checked so I'm thinking it's a problem with Vista and not with specific application.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI know every one here has this default Vista (even XP) problem. The problem is that the folder customization / layout never stays the way you set it, even minutes later after closing/re-opening explorer. This is driving me insane. For example, in explorer under Computer I choose large icons. Close, re-open its back to list view instead. Sometimes other folders will somehow change views by themselves too. This is really annoying.

For some reason when i am using my computer a white screen comes up and can not figure out why its diong that it just started diong this very confused. i always have to go down to the bottom and right click to show desk top but then when i go in to anything the white screen comes back its wierd
View 8 Replies View RelatedOn any application, when I save for the first time, or save as, the window opens to select where to save (documents, usually) but the cursor becomes a little white circle and if I click in the window, it says not responding at the top. The only recourse it to stop it either from task manager or repeatedly clicking the close icon. Vista 64 Home Premium SP1 Intel Core duo E750, Nvidia Geforce 8800 4 gig ram.

This made my WHOLE operating system go completely retarded, but once I used safe mode a couple of times it sorted out. I recently installed Ubuntu, so I can dual-boot my laptop. Now, all of a sudden after the Ubuntu install, my windows vista is broken!! I get to the log in screen, and i log in as normal, and then i get to my desktop - which is just a blank white screen with my curser on it. I can press CTRL-ALT-DEL, and i can log off and shut down, but I can not use task manager, and it gives me an error message saying something like 'it can not run' or something.

View 5 Replies View Relatedi have found over the past few weeks my system has been locking up in the first 10 minutes or so. All i get is a whit screen and a constant freeze out that is not resolved by ctrl alt del. I have taken the following actions
1. took side off case and removed any dust which was minimal
2. cleaned down heatsink
3. removed plug in Graphics card as i noticed it was very hot (GF8400GS)
4. reinstalled Vista ultimate from scratch
5. left the system running with the side off
alas it is still crashing in the first few minutes or wehn i try to install anything. The system is currently clean with just the install software given it crashes as soon as i try to do anything. It is 8 months old and in very good condition. I am at an absolute loss as to what could be. As stated before i cannot run for more than a few minutes so am struggling to do anything with the system....
all my desktop icons got suddenly changed to internet explorer icons,after (i opened some program in the internet,) then i did some personalisation then it changed to my adobe photoshop icon, all the desktop icons now shows the adobe,,icons.like all my programs which was earlier like (yahoo msngr, msn mesengr,windows vista programs,almost all other programs) and my internet wireless stopped working. i have a vista home premium 32. and my comp is asus f3t series. i was trying to do the icon cache, but couldnt find. tried restarting but couldnt solve.now trying to run my antivirus scan Mcafee. if anybody knows the solution to restore my earlier icons.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI went to load my computer last night and my computer wouldn't load. It said there was a problem and recommended a system repair. I did this and it then went to another screen saying it needed to check the c drive to make sure that it was consitent with the other drivers. When that was complete i could then enter my password and log in. When i did that i went to the internet then my screen started to fade to a snow white screen. My PC then froze. I switched it off and went throught the same process as above. This time i started to do a virus scan on my pc and halfway through the scan my pc froze again and couldn't complete the scan.
when I try to start up my computer (hp - with vista), it goes straight to a black screen with a white arrow curser (which I can move around). The screen saver will come on after a few minutes, but when I touch a key, I get back to the same blank screen. Alt-Ctrl-Del does nothing. I have tried rebooting in safe mode, and I still end up with the blank screen. I do not have have the Windows CD (pre-installed when I bought it), and my CD drive is not working anyways (been broken for a few weeks).

View 8 Replies View Relatedthere's a really old thread about this already. But it didn't solve my problem. When I boot vista, a little white square appears in the upper left corner. It's not my wallpaper. On the old thread they have resolved the problem as being an ATI GPU Driver problem, and the update fixed it. But here's my problem, I don't have an ATI GPU. When I right click the little white sqaure I can open up its properties, and in the properties it has a name of some website. Shortly after I even read it a "close program" window comes up. I click on close and the sqaure dissapears until the next time I boot. Leaving the white square on just messes with whatever programs Im running. For example: If im watching a movie in full-screen, it will randomly just exit out of full screen. It doesnt do that once the white sqaure is off.

I am using the "HP PCL5 Universal Print Driver" (I have the same results if I use the "HP PCL6 Universal Print Driver"). These are the drivers for Vista 64 from HP's website. The printer is connected to the Vista laptop as a
local printer, using a local port similar to '\officedellHP4650'(file://\officedellHP4650). (If I don't use the local port approach, printing is extremely slow... 3+ minutes to display the printer's Properties dialog)
When I print from any program on the Vista laptop, even the Test Page from Properties, the printing is in black and white (no color). When I print from the computer that is connected directly to the printer, or from any other computer on the network, the printout is in color. Note that the color option **is** enabled in the printer's Properties on the Vista computer. I have unloaded and reloaded the drivers repeatedly.
I have a HP Deskjet 935C printer which has always worked fine in both Black and White print and in Color. Today I wanted to print a color document and it always shows in the preview as a black and white document (which it is not). It also prints it as Black and White. Yet , I checked all on the printer and it is set for Best quality Color and I just cannot figure out why the preview shows it always in black and white. I have a newer Epson and it shows and prints it fine in color. So the document is OK. It is something on the HP printer, but I cannot figure what.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have an HP dv5-1000us running Vista Home Premium 64, and I've had it for several months. Recently it has developed a tendancy to randomly freeze solid (no control alt delete, no coming back from being frozen, must hard restart). It got much worse when I tried to install the new Zune update (3.1); now it will freeze like clockwork about 3 minutes after I open Zune. If I don't open Zune, it's much more random but it still happens. Another symptom is that I started getting a message that my sound driver software had to close due to a "problem". Sound still works, I just get the annoying message. Nothing I do seems to fix it, including Bios flashing, driver/device install/reinstall, etc.
I was really surprised when I looked at the system monitor. I have 4 gigs of RAM installed, and it runs at a steady 1.7gb usage with no programs open. I have disabled the animation stuff, too. When I open Zune it shoots up to around 2gb. The processor varies between 4 to 20% with no programs open, and is at 95-99% when Zune is open. As I'm typing this, I have flock, skype, and outlook open, the processor is running at about 30% and the RAM usage holds at a steady 1.76gb. Question: Is this normal? Or is it time (already) to bust out the restore disks?
Just wondered what the normal temperature of a PC was when it's running, when you're gaming for example?
