Cannot Share Files Or Printer Between XP SP2 And Machines

Mar 23, 2008

I have 2 (actually 4, but 2 are important here) machines that can see each other network-wise, but not share files. The Windows XP machine (Home SP2) has the printer and files that need shared. It can see the Vista machine (a laptop) when I go to "My Network Places" and click on "View Network Computers", but clicking on the machine gives me the error "\Laptop is not accessible. You might not have permission to access this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. The network path is not found."

The XP machine can share to other XP machines just fine. The Windows Vista machine (it's Home Premium RTM, no beta versions of SP1 installed) can not see any other machine on the workgroup (it sees the router, however) from "Network" on the start menu, but it sees the XP machine in "Control Panel > Network Map" (the XP machine DOES have LLTP installed so that this happens.) When I type in "\Desktop" in the address bar, the error is "Windows cannot find '\Desktop'. Check the spelling and try again. In "Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center", Network discovery, File sharing, and Public folder sharing are on, and my wireless network (it's encrypted and MAC-address- filtered) shows up as a private network.

Networking: How Share XP Desktop

First of all I am not the most technically minded person when it comes to networking so whoever is able to help then please use child talk! All I want to do is get my Vista Home Premium laptop to share my XP desktop - and vice versa. How do I do it? I was easily able to do it on 2 XP machines but I am totally baffled by the XP to Vista set up :

Access Share On XP Box: Safe Mode Networking

Mar 23, 2008

I would like to transfer some files from my old XP laptop to my new Vista laptop. All available Windows updates have been applied to both boxes and both boxes are plugged into my Linksys BEFSX41 router. I must boot my XP box in "Safe Mode with Networking" because some unknown startup item has been causing problems. For both boxes, my logon account is a member of the local Administrators group and has a blank password. On my XP box, in Explorer I share the folder "xfer" which contains my files. I grant "Full Control" to "Everyone".

On my Vista box, in Explorer I can see my XP box, but when I double-click on it I get the message:"is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. Logon failure: user account restrictions. Possible reasons are blank passwords not allowed, logon hour restrictions, or a policy restriction has been enforced."

Cannot Share Printer

Feb 26, 2010

I cannot get my 64 bit vista machine to connect to a printer connected to my 32 bit XP machine. I have read all kinds of advice on various forums and the microsoft support site but nothing seems to work. Both computers have been networked for some time, I am able to share files and folders, both computers see the other in their network folder. I have pinged the printer, the other computer back and forth and everything is OK. I can see the network printer connected to the host computer but when I try to connect, I get the message that the server does not have the correct driver(s) installed. The printer prints fine from the XP machine.

When I tried to install the drivers on the Vista machine I was told by HP that they do not have a full version of the drivers for my 64 bit macnhine but could only provide basic drivers which I downloaded and installed. I have tried creating a new port with the host computer name and printer name but all I get is the network path cannot be found. I have followed some of the suggestions for similiar problems on this site where people have had success but those ideas just don't work. The printer is a HP Photosmart 7960 which I have had for several years. Right now I am at my wits end and ready to go back and start over, maybe I missed something minor.

Possible To Share The Printer Only?

Nov 29, 2009

When you turn on file and printer sharing, both file and printer sharing are turned on. Is there a way to turn on printer sharing only? by default, c$ is always shared on windows XP pro, I am not sure about vista/windows 7 home premium. So there is some security risk with file sharing, while there is less risk with printer sharing.

The PCs are behind the firewall, however, there is a possibility that the PC used by the kids have trojan or are even hijacked (anti-virus are installed but it's still not that secure). So I only want to share the printer.

Wireless Networking A Printer

Mar 2, 2009

We have a Dell Desktop running XP it connects through USB to our 2Wire Gateway router.

We recently purchased a HP Laptop running Vista x64, it is connected to the same 2Wire through the wireless signal.

Here is our problem. We purchased a HP Photosmart C5580 which is connected to our desktop and functioning fine.

We were told we could connect our laptop to this printer wirelessly all though it has no wireless capability (other than bluetooth which we do not have on our laptop). They said there were two ways to network it so that we would not have to use the USB with our laptop.

What is the easiest way to do about doing this?

I have spent 6 hours on the phone with HPs so called "techs" and they were unable to help at all. Kept trying to connect through bluetooth (which I told them our laptop was not capable of). I called Geek Squad to make sure are laptop was some how to connect to this printer with out a USB as that is the only reason I bought it. They said we could do it 2 ways through networking and that it would be simple enough for me to do on my own.

Is anyone able to help??

XP Networking, Shared Printer

I have a home network with 3 XP computers and a Vista laptop (Lenovo x60) running Vista Business. The network using both wired and wireless connections. I installed a NAS (Maxtor Shared Storage 2), and had to change the workgroup name (since the Maxtor could not handle the "@") character.

Win98 Printer Share Is Perpetually Offline After Rebooting

Oct 10, 2009

For years, I've had an HP DeskJet 812C connected to the parallel port on my Win98SE computer. The printer is shared, and I've had no problems printing from Windows XP. Enter Windows Vista. I set up Vista to use client-side rendering by adding a local printer and having it point to the port for the printer. Everything works fine when I set it up, until I reboot the Vista computer. When that happens, Vista lists the printer as "offline" and NOTHING I do will allow it to print again. The only thing I can do is add another printer, have it point to the same port, and delete the old printer.

How do I fix this problem, or alternately, how do work around the problem by making a script to automatically add a local printer set to print to the shared port on bootup and delete it on shutdown? I have no idea how to make such a script or if it is even possible. I'm using Vista 64-bit home premium. I should mention that this is definitely a Vista problem, because I have Virtual PC installed on that same computer to run Windows XP Pro (32-bit) and the virtual machine on the same hardware with the troublesome Vista as the host OS has absolutely NO problem with the printer or file shares as far as the Win98SE computer is concerned. As a consequence I'm resorting to doing all my Office Suite work with Virtual PC as I don't want the hassle of forgetting to reinstall the damn printer every time I want to print.

User Accounts: Accessing Printer Share Fails

Jun 5, 2008

I have a Windows Vista SP1 system trying to access a printer share on a XP Pro SP3 system. The admin accounts on Vista are able to get to the printer share with no problems. However, the User accounts are having problems with accessing the printer share. I had read an article on using a local port for accessing the share instead of using network share printer access. When the User accounts try to print, a print error is displayed on the job list and the print does not occur. I have opened up the printer share on the XP box to include everyone and guests to have full access and I still have the problem. Is it a problem with XP or Vista?

Cannot Share The Files And Folders

Apr 5, 2008

We have vista on both desktop (office-pc) and wireless laptop (daniel-pc) and a canon mp830 connected to the desktop pc. Desktop has macafee with firewall off and laptop had pc-cillin with firewall off. Both machines have identical sharing & discovery settings (no passwords), and the printer is shared. Both pc's see the other's files and printer. I plugged the MP830 into the laptop and let vista install the drivers.

When the printer is connected to the desktop pc, and I try to connect from the laptop, I get the 0x00000012 error. I then followed the advice in this forum and tried to create a local port on the laptop printer as \office-pcCanon830 and I get 'access denied'. Now, here's the thing, I plugged the printer into the laptop and tried to connect to it from the desktop. I clicked START, NETWORK, Daniel-pc and then right clicked the printer and clicked connect and IT DID. I then printed a document from the desktop to the printer connected to the laptop.

Next i uninstalled the printer from the desktop and then plugged it back in and let vista install the drivers as I had the laptop, thinking that perhaps there was a snag in the Canon software. I also downloaded the vista driver from Canon as I had done for the laptop. But when I tried to connect the desktop printer from the laptop, I once again got the 0X00000012 error. I've been round and round with this for a week and i must be missing some little thing.

Share Specific Files

May 19, 2008

My Vista Laptop. I enabled Guest, although I heard it is better not to do that. I have a administrative account named "Owner". And I added a user name called "Brandon T". On this last one I assigned a password. Network is set to "private". Password protected sharing is set to "off" to avoid any hassles. Public folder sharing is set to off because I want to share specific files. For the specific folder "music", sharing says "Brandon T" and "Owner". "Brandon T" is "reading" but that's ok because I only want to copy for back up purposes onto my desktop. I have McAfee protection but I disabled firewalls on both sides of the equation.

My XP Desktop. One user account "Brandon T" with same password as laptop. Workgroup is set to same as laptop, "MSHOME". I have NOT downloaded the LLTP .... thing ... because I read it wasn't necessary to share. My Desktop CAN SEE the "music" file, but ... and you know what's coming ... " is not accessible. you might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access pemissions."

Dual Boot Share Same .exe Files?

May 15, 2010

My main program is Windows Vista. (C:/ Partition is 202 GB).

I made a Windows 7 partition (D:/) about 20 GB big.

I can navigate from the Windows 7 (D:/ partition) over to the C:/ partition and create links to some programs like Skype, Filezilla, Audacity and others.

That way I don't have to duplicate the .exe programs on the 7 partition.

But I couldn't get Word 2007 or iTunes to work, so I installed them again on the 7 partition. Now the partition is full and I won't be able to load anything else, should the need arise.

Unable To Share Files Between XP And Vista

Feb 2, 2008

Ive just installed Vista Ultimate 64 bit on my comp and im having trouble sharing files with another computer that has WinXP 32bit installed. Ive checked that the workgroup names are the same and that file sharing is enabled, but it wont allow me to access files on my vista machine FROM the winxp machine. I have no trouble accessing files on the winxp machine from my vista machine, but it wont work the other way around. It gives me an access denied error due to permissions, even though I let it have full control. Could this be because the 32bit is clashing with the 64 bit? Because I previously have winxp installed on both machines and file sharing was working fine.

Networking XP: Copying And Transferring Files

Mar 23, 2008

I have a small network consisting of five machines. Two of the computers have Vista Home Premium installed and the others have various flavors of Windows XP installed. Copying and transferring files works flawlessly between the machines except for one of the Xp laptops which has very poor performance when communicating with either of the Vista machines. I can access this computer from either of the Vista machines and transfer files with no problem. However, if I use this laptop to access the Public folder on either of the Vista machines, the throughput is so slow to the point that Windows Explorer will "hang".

In an effort to solve this problem I have: Installed and run Network Magic on both computers...no problems found. I have installed the Link Layer Topology service on the laptop and I have tried disabling the "Autotuning level" on one of the Vista machines all to no avail. The laptop in question has XP Media Center on it with no antivirus or firewall software installed. All ping times are good. All of the computers on the network are connected wirelessly except for one of the Vista machines. I've tried connecting the laptop directly to the router with a cable but still no joy. At this point I am stumped.

XP Network - Computers Unable To Share Files

Apr 23, 2008

I have a home office network with one new Dell laptop with Windows Vista Home Basic which I bought a couple of weeks ago, one desktop with Windows XP Pro and one older laptop with Windows XP Pro. The laptops are connected wirelessly, the desktop is using a wired Ethernet connection.

Obviously, there have been never a problem with XP machines. Initially, the Vista machine was also able to connect to everybody else. I didn't even bother to look at the settings because everything worked. Then I went to a business trip, and connected to other networks, including wireless public ones in the airports. When I came back, I was unable to share files or even see other computers on the LAN. The internet connection is working fine though. Oh yes, and I also installed a couple of updates, probably some of those constituting Service Pack 1 as well.

When I checked the network, to my surprise, it turned out that it became "Public" (could this be "guilt by association" - the airport wireless networks are public, so my home network is public, too?). I changed it to "Private". Didn't help. Checked shares, made sure that the users have the same passwords. Ditto. I deleted the history of the airport networks. Still the same.........

Networking To XP (wireless): List Files The Connection Timesout And Gives An Error Os Dennied Access To The Shared Folder

using the laptop through wireless I can see other computer and even list their shared folders but when I try to actually list files the connection timesout and gives an error os dennied access to the shared folder. If I try to use VNC for instance, the client connects, asks for pass and then after the remote screen starts to appear.. it hangs... no response after that . The strange part of the problem is that if I connect the laptop through a wired connection everything works ok I access shared folders, I print remotely, no problems. I tried a number of things , the most obvious, like firewalls diferent settings on the network etc. What I can't figure out is what can be so different in the PC for the wired to work but not the wireless.

Network Share Setup Some Files"missing"

Feb 9, 2009

I have a network share setup b/w a Vista Ultimate x32 and XP machines. Using the XP machine, I open the Vista hosted share but found some files "missing", ie. even though they physically exist in the Vista machine, I simply cannot see them from XP. Turns out that these files are missing the EVERYONE in the File Permissions (right click file, properties, security). These are files downloaded using Firefox, and whether they are JPG, AVI, TXT, DOC, XLS they are all missing the EVERYONE permission. If I download the same files using Internet Explorer, the files get created with the EVERYONE permission.

My current workarounds ... which none are desirable are this:Use Internet Explorer, Add EVERYONE permission for each file manually (you have to do this one by one, can't select multiple files and perform bulk operation),Use CMD line utilities like takeown and icacls Note this is a secure home network, and while file sharing using EVEYRONE isn't the safest way to do this, I can finetune this later. The key problem at hand is what I've described above. I'd be happy just to be able to get FireFox create files with the full permissions, same way IE does.

With the new Win7 laptop in the Network I can see all 3 computers, as well as access files in both the XP computers. However, I cannot access any of the Win 7 files from the XP computers. I also have tried to share an HP Officejet 6110 with the Win 7 laptop, but when I try to Add Printer, which I can see the name of with the Wizard, I get an error notice that access is denied.

The XP computers Workgroup name is MSHOME; however the Win 7 laptop was named WORKGROUP by default, but I changed this name to MHOME where all 3 computers now have the same Workgroup name,

If anyone can assist me in establishing both file sharing of the Win 7 laptop and adding the sharing of printer.
