Windows Vista Business x64, 8Gb, SP1 We are missing the Restart/Sleep/Shutdown options from the Start menu. All we see is LOG OFF and LOCK. I am using the Administrator account. The prior IT guy left without any documentation. We have to use the [shutdown.exe -s -t 15 –f] command which works fine. But would like the standard GUI functions back. Any ideas where to look or how to bring back to resolve this.
View 3 Repliesmy problem is that suddenly some of the entries disappeared from the menu that comes up in the start menu, I have googled to see it there is a solution and it was not, tried system restore, and I even replaced patched uxtheme (and other) file(s) to the originals. Ill attach my CBS.log from the sfc scan. Images of the problem below.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI am running Windows Vista Home Basic and I accidently performed a hard shut down earlier today. Now when I boot up my computer, it will boot up and then it will completely shutdown and restart again. When it shuts down, it gives me a blue screen and then says "Windows has been shut down to prevernt damage to your computer. bad_pool_reader". I can boot up in safe mode, but if I try to boot it up regularly, then this cycle happens all over again. What do I need to do to fix the problem (preferabbly without having to reinstall Windows/deleting all of my information on the computer)?
View 4 Replies View RelatedAfter working well for months, my Vista Home Premium x64 system has developed a bad bug: Every time I try to do Shutdown or Restart, right after displaying "Shutting down", the system crashes with a Blue Screen of Death message: "SPECIAL_POOL_DETECTED_MEMORY_CORRUPTION" with gdrv.sys as the offending driver. This makes it impossible to do a smooth restart, since I have to do a manual reboot at that point every time.
This behavior does NOT happen in Safe Mode, only in normal mode. That leads me to believe it's a software bug. But I've used verifier.exe and still can't find a driver that's faulty. Verifier.exe can't find anything wrong with gdrv.sys.
I noticed that I do not have the shutdown, restart, etc. options in Task Manager like I used to. I'm not sure if I ever had it in this particular computer, but I did have it in my previous computer which ran XP Home. I am currently running a dual boot with Vista Ultimate and XP Pro, both x86. Is there a way to get this option to show in the Task Manager window in XP & Vista?
View 5 Replies View RelatedNever use sleep function but last night instead of selecting shutdown hit sleep by mistake. Couldn't get system to wake from sleep and had to turn off by holding power button. Today when switching system back on i get fan & case lights on , hdd and dvd activity. The keyboard is unresponsive (no lights) and monitor remains in stand by. Mouse gets power but doesn't wake pc. Using reset or power button on case just restarts system to exact condition above. Can't contact pc manufacturer til monday (pc 4 months old). Read quite a few other posts regarding vista sleep issues but haven't found anything that would seem to rectify this problem.
View 9 Replies View RelatedMy machine is an Evesham 17" Laptop, Intel Dual core, 2GB RAM, Nvidia graphics, wireless conection to internet. Just plain standard really. I have it configured to enter Sleep mode, rather than Shutdown, when I've finished for the day and this has always worked perfectly......until last night. I put it to sleep as usual, turned off external power and toddled off to bed. This morning when I came down I found it up and running with not much power left. I switched mains back on and was presented with a message that "Internet Explorer has stopped working." IE was definitely not running last night. As soon as I closed that box, another one appeared saying that Adobe Flash was ready to install an update - clicking OK enabled the update to be installed. Next Paint Shop Pro decided that it also wanted to install an update, and duly did so. I then shut the machine down completely and went off to work.
Booting the machine this evening was uneventful until I tried to view a video on the BBC website. I was then informed that I didn't have the latest version of Flashplayer and invited to download and install it. It would therefore appear that the previous update had actually reversed Flashplayer. What I hope is that some kind person can tell me is how the machine wakes up from sleep mode all by itself? I've checked BIOS and there is nothing enabled there which would allow an automatic start from sleep. I've also checked my power setting in Control Panel with similar results. Full AV/Trojan scans reveal nothing and the machine is running perfectly. I await the morning with interest.....

Have had pavillion dv9408nr home premium vista 32 notebook for 2 and a half years,no problems.Untill 3 days ago laptop would not restart after sleep. Lights on but screen black.Started to do the same when i try to boot up from cratch ,never done that before. Takes a few attempts to boot up. Updated the bios and a few drivers but still the same problem also tried a system restore never worked either.
View 6 Replies View RelatedSo I accidentally put my computer into sleep mode yesterday (I never normally use it) and now it wont start up! The Keyboard and Mouse are both off, and if i push the power button i can hear the computer start up but both the power and working lights stay off and the screen stays black (nothing happens except I can hear the computer running). Ive tried several hard restarts from the computer and turning off all power then turning it on and nothing works! Its a new computer 4 months old and ive had no problems of this sort ever before. It cant even show me a boot screen or BSOD or anything, "coma" is the best way of describing the problem (it definitely works, i can hear it whirring but it just does nothing).
whenever I put the computer to sleep mode and move the mouse while it's getting into sleep mode, it'll either restart or kill the computer. When it kills the computer, the fans still run but the lights on the front go out. There is also no picture on the monitor. To turn off the computer, I have to force a shutdown by holding the power button for around 4 seconds. Then, when I try to turn on the computer again, the fans turn on, the hard drive runs, but still no lights on the front of the case nor picutre on the screen. I fixed it by clearing the RTC RAM on the motherboard. After doing that, the computer would boot up, but if I did sleep mode and moved the mouse, then the computer would die again, and I'd have to clear the RTC RAM again. I'm wondering why this happens with sleep mode. I use Vista Home Premium 64-bit. Is there a solution to this problem or does anyone else have this problem?

I've desided to order the recovery discs for my computer to do a full system recovery, hoping that will fix it. I tried everything I could in vain, and I decided to go ahead and format my hard drive, through another computer using an enclosure kit since I couldn?t even get into safe mode or any other mode without getting the error screen right away. As I mentioned above, I formatted my disc, thus lost all data, hoping to be able to install a clean version of VISTA. when my computer goes into sleep mode, it wont come back...i have to turn off the computer& restart it. it says a driver is missing NIVIDA GeForce. I have read of loads of people who can't Hibernate because of Hybrid Sleep, i appear to have the opposite. How do i enable my computer to use Hybrid Sleep please.
I have read elsewhere of some users experiencing the problem of hard disks making the infamous clicking noises on shutdown of any version of vista. I don't know if its only SATA HD but thats what I have and I am experiencing the same thing. It has me concerned that the clicking of the HD arms might be unnecessary wear and tear. any fixes for this?

Yesterday after a week long holiday, I came home and started my computer which ran fine until this afternoon.
I was out and about doing things and I left the computer on and logged online as I usually do.
When I came home, I found it had shut down and restarted and I was at my Windows Logon screen.
I figured we must have had some sort of electrical outage, so I logged in and let my Intel RAID storage manger do it's thing (it has to re-verify and re-match the data on my two RAID 1 drives).
I wandered back in a few minutes later to find the computer had gone into a CheckDisc. Check Disc didn't find any bad things so I let it run through and restarted, now all seems well again.
I am curious as to why it might have shut down in the first place and not quite sure where to look.
Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Event Viewer says no critical errors, just one error message that says the shut down was unexpected.
Today i am getting windows has recovered from a shutdown, click for solution, no solutions come up,in fact nothing at all comes up, all seems normal till it happens again, usually after just being left on but not being used. attatched is the messge i get. Problem Event Name: BlueScreen

I have a new Dell XPS 730x running a clean install retail version of vista ultimate x64. I had 5 Disruptive Shutdowns on the first day of use and 2 on the second. Is there any way of diagnossing what is causing them? I have checked all the hardware and software with microsoft to make sure it's compatible with vista x64.

After I click-on Restart or Shutdown, the Logon screen appears, then it goes back to the Desktop Screen, then back to the Login screen and Restarts or Shuts Down correctly. I'm not sure whether it may have something to do with the Task Scheduler (and Windows Sounds possibly)

All drives in the system are SATA, 2x Raptor 36GB, 1 Plextor DVD burner, and the new Samsung 250GB. The Raptors are currently not in a RAID. What occurs during Vista shutdown? It may give me some more insight into my problem.
During shutdown, the new drive gets thrashed for 3-5 minutes before the system drive updates config and shuts down. Could this be some sort of conflict with the controller? Raptors are SATA 150 and the Samsung is 300. Is Vista writing a system restore to that drive at shutdown? (A friend theorized that, and it sounded logical enough)
My Vista very often hangs, usually on shutdown. I have to pull the plug. Will this damage my laptop if I keep doing it? I have to though cos its hung. Problem Reports and Solutions is useless of course it doesnt specify anything. If it wont damage the laptop then I can just keep pulling the plug when it happens.
View 6 Replies View RelatedBrother purchased new laptop. Vista Home Basic 32 bit SP1. Turned on machine and connected fine via ethernet cable to home network. I logged in remotely and watched and acted when required as both Vista and McAfee downloaded and installed numerous updates. On one occassion when asked to restart now or later after McAfee finished updating, I chose later. I then installed LogMeIn on this computer so that upon reboot I would have more control.
That may or may have nothing to do with issue now but ever since then, when warm or cold re-start of computer is done, computer does not obtain an IP. Have to go to CPanel/Network/Diagnose and choose automatic rediscovery of IP which works just fine.
