Ystem Sleep: Hard Restart Does Nothing

Jan 24, 2010

So I accidentally put my computer into sleep mode yesterday (I never normally use it) and now it wont start up! The Keyboard and Mouse are both off, and if i push the power button i can hear the computer start up but both the power and working lights stay off and the screen stays black (nothing happens except I can hear the computer running). Ive tried several hard restarts from the computer and turning off all power then turning it on and nothing works! Its a new computer 4 months old and ive had no problems of this sort ever before. It cant even show me a boot screen or BSOD or anything, "coma" is the best way of describing the problem (it definitely works, i can hear it whirring but it just does nothing).

Missing Restart/Sleep/Shutdown

Mar 6, 2009

Windows Vista Business x64, 8Gb, SP1 We are missing the Restart/Sleep/Shutdown options from the Start menu. All we see is LOG OFF and LOCK. I am using the Administrator account. The prior IT guy left without any documentation. We have to use the [shutdown.exe -s -t 15 –f] command which works fine. But would like the standard GUI functions back. Any ideas where to look or how to bring back to resolve this.

Sleep Mode Restart Or Kill The Computer

Aug 27, 2008

whenever I put the computer to sleep mode and move the mouse while it's getting into sleep mode, it'll either restart or kill the computer. When it kills the computer, the fans still run but the lights on the front go out. There is also no picture on the monitor. To turn off the computer, I have to force a shutdown by holding the power button for around 4 seconds. Then, when I try to turn on the computer again, the fans turn on, the hard drive runs, but still no lights on the front of the case nor picutre on the screen. I fixed it by clearing the RTC RAM on the motherboard. After doing that, the computer would boot up, but if I did sleep mode and moved the mouse, then the computer would die again, and I'd have to clear the RTC RAM again. I'm wondering why this happens with sleep mode. I use Vista Home Premium 64-bit. Is there a solution to this problem or does anyone else have this problem?

Hard Drive Failure: Black Screens Have Occurred On Bootup?

Mar 24, 2010

Think my HD may be failing. First, a few black screens have occurred on bootup. After normal shut down this A.M., it booted into the BIOS screen, after noisy boot. I simultaneously pressed Ctrl + Alt + Del expecting to get Task Manager. Got Advanced Options Menu. Pressed enter, booted to Windows normally. And just now, got louder than usual "whirring" noise on bootup, which went on to boot into Windows normally.

Question is: What would my options be if the Drive totally fails? I've got Personal Data saved. And all I have is Recovery Disks for this laptop. Would those be able to be installed on a new Drive if needed. I'm under the impression that I have a Smart Drive. Wouldn't that warn me if the Drive was failing? No warnings yet! And what type of Warning should I look for? So, how should I prepare for HD failure?

Windows Defender Spyware: Open Internet Explorer, The Windows Defender Pops Up And Says That My IE Is Infected?

Feb 11, 2010

The computer has worked fine since then, I've used the internet at wi-fi hotspots around my city, with never a single problem...until last night. While I was on-line at home, I was checking a website that I have always checked before without issue when my Windows Defender suddenly popped open and said that my computer was under threat and blocked Internet Explorer from me and started running a diagnosic. Well apparently it said that I had like 26 infections in my computer. That I had worms, spyware, adware, that someone was watching my key logs, etc, etc, and it gave me the option to click on the remove all. So I clicked on it, but instead of doing anything, another message box appeared saying that my Windows Defender is not the full version and that I must either purchase the full version or enter my key code for it. I don't have a key code since I never bought this program, was pre-installed.

Anyways, now whenever I try to open Internet Explorer, the Windows Defender pops up and says that my IE is infected and asks if I would like to purchase the full Windows Defender. I have clicked on both options. If I say "no", the computer blocks my IE, if I say yes, it opens my IE, but instead of taking me to a Windows website, it takes me to www.antivirus-care.com, which my browser says does not exist and instead takes me to another page with a listing of anti-virus program sites to buy from. Well, all this seems fishy to me because I can't do anything with the Windows Defender program. I can't turn it off, I can't change its settings, or even look at other options it has. Instead whenever I try the message window of "would I like to buy the full version now?" appears and keeps appearing.

Hard Drive Failure After Sleep

Aug 14, 2009

1. Put computer to sleep. (iffy - sometimes resets resolution, 1-2 times caused harmless BSOD)
2. On wake up, computer shows distorted image and then BSODs.
3. resets to bios, but doesn't complete the bios progressbar (not sure if this is for POST)
4. Hard Drive(s) start to click.

I may be wrong, but seems like a simple case of hard drive failure, but it was directly caused by Vista, which has been known to have problems with Sleep. I don't remember checking/signing any Vista-hardware liability waiver, so is Microsoft liable for the hard drive failure since the risk was not eliminated by a critical update?

I just did it now and it said "done, now we need to restart" I click restart, it boots up and it STILL says I need to update! Could it be because, this computer ALSO has Microsoft Office 2003? If Office 2003 the problem, or is my luck just crap bad nowadays?

E: Drive (dvd/cd)drive Randomly Open

Dec 1, 2008

I have a question, I was wondering if it was possible that a virus/trojan or something else could cause my E: drive (DVD/CD) drive to randomly open? Because at points it will randomly pop open. Usually I notice this when I pick it up or set it down. I could understand if I accidentally hit the button picking it up but usually when I set it down Im not touching near that area. It has also popped open while on my lap.

Another thing I've noticed is even though I dont have a CD in the driver it will occasionally make the noise as though theres a CD in there. This has been a rather recent problem. I had a friends computer having problems so I did run a antivirus (A squared located under the free products). It did find some problems but said it deleted them. Im just wondering if this is a coincidence or if there is something potentially wrong because I'd like to take care of it over winter break.

Computer Shuts Down: Run CHKDSK /F And Check For Hard Drive Corruption And Then Restart Your Computer"

Sep 30, 2009

Before the computer actually came to the point of "shuting down just before it tried to load the o/s" it literrly kept shuting down on its own randomly for a week or so. Then the blue screen appeard with this error: 0x0000007BC , 0x84C5DBA0, 0x0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000 "Run CHKDSK /F and check for Hard Drive Corruption and then restart your computer"

Basically it's telling me the DRIVE is corruptet! Well, I plugged that SATA 2 HDD into my other computer (windows xp), detected it correctly and actually formated the drive and reinstalled XP on it without any types of problem. Does it still mean - SATA 2 is corrupted or broken!? How about the RAM then ... indeed, I did run the MemTest for 7 times and no errors were found. So the RAM are ok in this case, or am I wrong?! Maybe it's the PSU... ermmm no that cannot be 'cos the computer never shuts down, if I leave it run for (e.g 5 hours) and even if it's comes to "overheating" that cannot be the case eather, as its *again" never shuts down when you leave it run on the power.........

Problem With Bootup.

Nov 16, 2008

So a few weeks ago, I was using my Gateway M-Series laptop with Vista Home Premium installed and I ran into a problem while using Firefox. The computer screen had a white-ish glow overlapping the desktop background and the computer had locked up. I had to turn off the computer manually and later, I tried rebooting it. Since then, my computer has failed to boot, and after many attempts of trying to access the "Recovery Drive" and other boot settings (Safe Mode etc..) I am stuck. The computer will boot the Gateway screen, give me options to the BIOS Menu & Settings (which I can access) and will eventually take me to a screen with two options: 1) "Launch Startup Repair (recommended)" and 2) "Start Windows Normally." I have tried booting with both options and neither will fully boot. After the Windows loading screen, the screen will go black and a very discreet sound emits from what I believe is the hard drive.

Very Slow Bootup

Sep 4, 2009

I am experiencing very slow boot up of Vista Home Premium 32 bit. It takes good 10 - 12 minutes to completely boot up. I am using Dell desk top inspiron with 4 Gb RAM. I did some research and learnt how to filter the event log and diagnose where the degradation occurs. In my case, a lot of degradation found in loading drivers like sound and video. Also AVG resident shield slows down.

When I first turn on the system, black screen with a mouse curser appears for two - three minutes. Then Welcome message appears and again it blanks out for another two to three minutes. Then the desk top appears and the icons are slowly appearing. By the time complete boot is in place - system idle mode, it is ten to twelve minutes.

X64 Freezes After Bootup

Jun 30, 2009

For a at least a month now my computer has been freezing about five minutes after starting the boot-up sequence (as in 5 minutes after hitting the power button). No BSoD or anything. Just a freeze. I have tried many different things to troubleshoot. First let me tell you my specs and then I'll tell you what I've already tried so far.

Running Windows Vista x64 SP1 now here's what I've tried so far: initially tried system restore to a point before the problem started scanned for viruses and malware using Avira, Trendmicro online scan, Avast, Superantispyware and Malwarebytes upgraded my motherboard's BIOS returned all settings to stock upped the videocard fan speeds using Rivatuner replaced the video card ran chkdsk searched google endlessly for solutions I may be forgetting other things.

I'll let you know as hey are proposed. Usually I can finally get it to boot after several tries and I can play games normally and whatnot. Just now I was finally able to get it to boot on the 5th try. Another symptom that may or may not be related is that sometimes it freezes when you attempt to do something like attach a photo to a web-based email or upload photos to an online photo site. I built this system myself and I really hope I can get this fixed. I think my wife may be losing faith in me! Let me know any other info I can post that might help. My technical proficiency is pretty high.

CD Drive Won't Stay Open - Closes On Its' Own

Aug 3, 2009

Greetings, running Vista Home Premium 64-bit on a Dell system, has 2 optical drives (Blu ray burner, DVD burner). If I open one or both drives, moments later they will close on their own. This only happens when Windows is loaded (that is if I just boot to the BIOS screen and open the drives, they stay open), so Windows must be doing something that's causing the drives to close on their own?Note this is a fresh install of Vista, for various reasons we had to wipe the system and re-install Vista and the Dell drivers from scratch, there's no other updates (including MS Updates) applied - the Vista version is SP1 already though.

64 Ultimate Slow Bootup

Feb 6, 2009

I have a pc that has been booting slow and I checked in the performance area and found two issues effecting the system. One is for slow startup, and it gives me three programs that are doing this. I see one I will not be able to do anything with and two I should. They are:

1.) Symantec ( 67.7 seconds) ccSvchst.exe
2.) Acrobat Distiller (51.1 seconds) acrodist.exe
3.) Windows Mail (28.4 seconds) WinMail.exe

I went to find the programs and get them to stop loading "2 and 3) but they still load up. How do I stop them from loading on startup? Also on the other issue for visual settings. I tried to goto basic vista display but still get this Performance issue coming up in the Advanced tools area.

Bootup/recovery, Change Registry

Jun 13, 2009

Suddenly my CounterSpy pops up with something saying that a program is trying to change my registry, I wasn't trying to do anything with that so I hit block. Few seconds later another CS pop up says "A known program is attempting to run was blocked" All it said was Program: services.exe (Misc (general )). Then about a minute later the system rebooted itself.

So after it rebooted it'll take me to the "Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause." screen with the safe mode options. Here's where the prob starts. After I select any of the safe modes (w/networking, w/command prompt, last know good config.,) or start windows normally I jus get looped back to the BSOD and go through this cycle of rebooting and back to the safe mode select screen. I've tried popping in the windows install cd and trying to repair from there via recovery. It works. Nice! The thing is it recovers right to where the whole mess started with the CounterSpy pop up and I have about 60 seconds to where the system will reboot itself and I'm back to the BSOD and safe mode screens. So basically I'm runnin in cicrles here. It's Vista Premium 32bit btw

100% Cpu Usage After Bootup / Windows Update

May 8, 2008

I have 2 pc's running vista Home premium. As of the morning of 5/7/08, both of them are having an issue after bootup where cpu usage is near 100% for about 20-30 minutes. The computers are completely un-usable in this state. Looking at resource monitor(which takes about 10 minutes to load), both are showing svchost (netsvcs) PID 1456 at 100%. After this initial 20 to 30 minute lock up session, both computers seem to work fine. After investigating the issue a bit, it has something to do with windows update. If I go to control panel windows update, and try to update, the same thing happens.

Not sure if this means anything but both computers have update KB940510 under the windows update control panel console, dated 5/7/2008. From researchign this update it is something to do with windows validation. Both PC's have OEM installs of vista, so I dont 'think' the validation is the issue.......
