Microsoft Preparing To Release Pair Of Updates
Nov 8, 2008
Microsoft is preparing to release a pair of updates next Tuesday. The company said in an advance notice that the November edition of the 'Patch Tuesday' release will include one fix labeled 'critical' and a second labeled 'important.' The critical fix addresses a vulnerability in the Microsoft XML Core Services component in Windows 2000, XP, Server 2003, 2008 and Windows Vista. While Microsoft did not disclose the exact nature of the vulnerability, the company said that if exploited it could allow an attacker to remotely execute code on a targeted system. While the second flaw could also allow an attacker to remotely execute code, Microsoft rated the issue as an 'important' risk. The vulnerability lies within a component in Windows 2000, XP, Server 2003, Server 2008 and Windows Vista.
Microsoft offered little more on the nature of the vulnerability. The company typically refrains from disclosing specific details on a flaw until a fix can be released. The November update comes just two weeks after the disclosure and patching of another critical vulnerability in a Windows component. Shortly after the company posted the fix, an attack for the flaw was reported. Microsoft is planning to release the update next Tuesday. The update is typically released by early afternoon US Pacific time. Microsoft to deliver a pair of November fixes - vnunet.com

My other computer was working perfectly until I installed these 4 optional updates. I am running Vista Basic Home and now cannot connect to my Belkin wireless router and therefore have no internet.
1. Realtek Semiconductor Corp-Network-Realtek 8185 Extensible 802.11 b/g Wireless Device
2. Realtek Semiconductor Corp -Storage-Realtek USB 2.0 Card Reader
3. Update for windows Vista-English (KB937286)
4. Marvell-Network-Marvell Yukon 88e8038PCI-E Fast Eternet Controller
The wireless network connection to the the Belkin is listed under 'connect to a network' with a strong signal, and the computer I am typing on is connected so I know the router is working, but zi get the message that Windows cannot connect to belkin54g. When I go to uninstall these updates, they are no listed that I installed them and therefore cannot remove them...

I let Vista do two updates on my Tosh A300-1BZ Laptop - I think 1 was an IE8
compatibility update, the second a windows defender patch and the third (enabled in error) was a "windows live essentials" update which I cancelled half way through (by hitting Cancel and then Yes etc).
The updater reported two updated done one cancelled and requested a reboot.
After re-boot all I get after the initial Microsoft "bar graph" loading icon is a blue screen and "STOP: c0000139 (Entry Point Not Found) The procedure entry point ntoskrnl.Ex1AcquireFastMutex could not be located in the dynamic link library HAL.dll."
I've tried using repair windows using F8 and from a Vista Ultimate DVD (which reports no errors) and using system restore to a previous point which reports success but on re-boot the laptop still blue screens with the same report.

i just bought LOGITECH x-530 5.1 Speaker system. when i go to "Realtek HD Audio manager" and choose "5.1 speaker" the "rear pair" is grayed out! Here is a picture; if i change it to 7.1. then the "rear pair" will appear and i will be able to preform the test and hear sound... B-U-T ---> when i will play movies.. (divx, mkx, bluray.. ect'...) i don't hear the people talking.. it's like the wrong sound configuration information goes to the speakers. it will seem the people talking coms from the sub-woofer.. and again really really dim... .+ the rear speakers will work but very low (even when i put it on full volume) . any idea how to set up correctly the sound ? so even if i am on 7.1. the sound will go to the speakers as 5.1 and send the right information to each speaker?

I have some Vista Business users running with Limited accounts so that they can't install programs with the admin password. MS Automatic Update service seems to be running as Administrator so those patches get applied seemlessly and without my user having to call me to apply them. But I would truely love the ability to allow for Firefox and Adobe Reader to update themselves as well? Is this possible? I just can't keep up with all those updates on those two program for everyone here at work. Hey, I wonder if Google Updater can update these apps seemlessly: Ummm... I guess this runs as a System Account. I'll give this a shot and see. Otherwise any other suggestions are welcome. Overall though, I'd like to see how to define a specific program (well understanding the security ramifications) to install it as admin automatically.

I have a Dell insperon 530S. I think its time for a factory re-install. I am confused about how to save all my doc's, music, pix, etc before I do this. The kids use I-tunes, I have folders of music in different formats ( I think), we have Kodak and Olympus picture folders, old email in two different identities, and on and on. Is there a step-by-step on how to do this correctly, so I don't lose stuff and I am able to find and save everything I need? I'm figuring I will burn everything to a DVD or two, but I don't know....

Two nights ago when i started my computer up and typed in my password instead of the screen just putting up 'Welcome', it changed to 'Preparing Your Desktop'. After this it took about 3 minutes for my desktop to load, which is almost double the amount of time. When the desktop finally opens, a bubble pops up telling me that my user profile was not correctly loaded, and a temporary one has been loaded in its place.
At first i thought it might have just become corrupt and i could start a new profile. But none of the changes stick to this temporary file or any new user name i create. Frustrating that i have to upload my itunes library everytime i want to listen to music. So i had a friend of mine try to help me, and he had me checking a file HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionProfileList
Under here i tried to ensure that the key name did not end in .bad (but it does end in .bak), The ref count was at 1 which i changed to 0, and the state count was already at 0. None of this did anything... and really i don't know enough about computers to really comprehend what he has me doing here.

I am surprised at how Vista refuses to release memory. I have disabled Supercaching entirely, and still I find that free RAM drifts from 0 to 50MB quite regularly. Way back in the day, I used to use an app called CacheMan - it would prompt the system to release physical RAM back to the system. It worked very well. The folks who develop CacheMan are working on a Vista64 version, but it's not quite cooked yet.
I'm looking for recommendations on mechanisms to prompt the release of this RAM. The reason for this is that I am trying to troubleshoot occasional mouse lockups, which feel like the system's swapping. Unfortunately, my HDD LED isn't working and my hard drives are pretty much silent. So if the system is actually swapping, I have no way to know aside from keeping a PerfMon session running all the time. I see various shareware apps out there to release RAM on demand or on schedule - I'm looking for recommendations. Once CacheMan is ready for Vista I'll give that a go.

Microsoft to release Vista SP2 beta to more testers next week | All about Microsoft | ZDNet.com Posted by Mary Jo Foley @ 11:36 am Microsoft will release a beta of its forthcoming Vista Service Pack 2 (SP2) to a wider group of testers on October 29. Microsoft had been testing SP2 among a very select group of testers for the past couple of weeks. Last week, the company began signing up testers for a broader beta, which testers were told would be released sometime in the next four weeks. As the Hotfix.Net site reported, Microsoft has begun rolling out that broader beta of Vista SP2 this week. The build number for the beta is 16489. (Thanks to Neowin for the pointer to the Hotfix site.) Via the Vista Team blog, Microsoft said on October 24 to expect an even wider group of Technology Adoption Program (TAP) testers to get the SP2 beta bits on October 29.
Testers who received invitations to the Vista SP2 beta said they were told it would incorporate Windows Search 4, support for the VIA 64-bit CPU and Bluetooth support. Microsoft confirmed some of those fixes and features will be in the final SP2 in today’s blog posting. The company also said to expect SP2 to: Add the ability to record data on to Blu-Ray media natively in Windows Vista. Add Windows Connect Now (WCN) to simplify Wi-Fi Configuration. Enable the exFAT file system to support UTC timestamps, which allows correct file synchronization across time zones. I haven’t yet heard about any testers getting the Windows Server 2008 SP2 bits. That beta seemingly was timed to coincide with the Vista SP2 one. I’ve asked Microsoft for more information on when testers can expect to get those beta bits. No word so far............

I will personally wait until SP1 for Windows 7 before I mess with installing it. Due to the way Vista was when it first came out, I believe upgrading to Windows 7 right on release date would be a very bad bad idea.

Over the last few days, immediately after boot up, a small window pops up on my desktop. It's title is "Preparing to Move". It APPEARS to do precisely nothing and disappears, not to be seen again until I next boot up!
Anybody got an idea what this is all about? Only seems to have been appearing over, say, the last week. OS is Vista Home Premium-64 bit. Look forward with interest to any comments,

Desktop PC will be one year next month. I did not renew the Microsoft Office after trial period that came as a package w/ no future intention of acquiring it. I'm using the free Open Office program - word processing mostly at this time. Is there anything in the list below that is of importance? I only have a basic PC with DVD player for movies, etc. No scanner, printer or fax. Not even external hard drive or usb flash drive. Otherwise, I understand that I can just choose to hide the updates, so it will not keep reminding me. Also, I choose to keep my OS w/ Srvce pk 1 and MS IE version 7 for as long as I'll be able to. I had too many probs with Srvce pk 2 and MS IE version 8. Your opinion, if any, is welcome.......

I am running Office Home and Student 2007 and have just run a diagnostic which suggests that my installation is not up to date and that I go to the Microsoft Update site and download any available updates. When I do, I am asked to sign on with 'Microsoft Update'. The idea is, I think, to combine this Microsoft Update with my Windows Update and let Office updates come though along with updates for Vista, IE, etc. I have posted here before with issues concerning updates including a fiasco I had last November which involved Office updates and am wondering, since Office seems to be working well at the moment (I was bored so I did a diagnostic ) should I bother with this or just leave it? Does Office have security issues like IE and Vista?
