Windows Vista Still Get Delayed Loading Time
May 27, 2009Recently one of my hard drives underwent a bizarre process where it decided to revert back to RAW. After 4 days of problem solving I finally fixed the drives but also purchased 2 new/better drives. I run a RAID-0 Striping set-up. I have done every trick in the book to decrease the excess fluff from running in the background of windows vista but I still get delayed loading times. If I right click to attempt to create a folder or something such as that, the circular loading icon appears as it takes 2-3 seconds to open. And it does this with most everything, some things take longer than others.
I only ask what could be the cause of this because this never happened with my former drives or vista for the past year, it only started after the one hard drive crashed and it has done it since the fix and since the installation of the new drives. Everything use to open practically instantaneously....My only assumption is that there is something trying to load but I have tried disabling everything and it still does the same thing.
Windows Explorer VERY Delayed!, Window Immediately Freezes
May 31, 2008Whenever I try to open any Windows Explorer program like My Computer, Control Panel, Recycle Bin, etc. the window immediately freezes (though nothing else on the PC freezes) and goes into a non-responsive state. If I just do other stuff for about 3-5 minutes the window will eventually open correctly, but this is obviously a problem.

Jun 8, 2008I decide to re-baseline my desktop home system with a fresh install of Windows Vista Ultimate. Everything seemed to install correctly. Vista picked up most of the drivers and I was able to supply the ones it didn???t. After setup and re-boot, I noticed that the desktop/sidebar appears reasonably fast, after which there is a delay of about a minute with some disk activity during which the Network icon in System Tray has a red X. After about a minute or so, there is a great deal of disk activity (the system seems to be paging). The delay continues further until finally the yellow exclamation symbol appears, quickly followed by the globe icon. The system then functions as normal. The delay can be anywhere between 1-3 minutes. My motherboard has 3 network connections; 1 direct connection to my NAS server, 1 to the ADSL modem, 1 wireless.

Feb 23, 2009I am surprised at how Vista refuses to release memory. I have disabled Supercaching entirely, and still I find that free RAM drifts from 0 to 50MB quite regularly. Way back in the day, I used to use an app called CacheMan - it would prompt the system to release physical RAM back to the system. It worked very well. The folks who develop CacheMan are working on a Vista64 version, but it's not quite cooked yet.
I'm looking for recommendations on mechanisms to prompt the release of this RAM. The reason for this is that I am trying to troubleshoot occasional mouse lockups, which feel like the system's swapping. Unfortunately, my HDD LED isn't working and my hard drives are pretty much silent. So if the system is actually swapping, I have no way to know aside from keeping a PerfMon session running all the time. I see various shareware apps out there to release RAM on demand or on schedule - I'm looking for recommendations. Once CacheMan is ready for Vista I'll give that a go.

Microsoft had been testing SP2 among a very select group of testers for the past couple of weeks. Last week, the company began signing up testers for a broader beta, which testers were told would be released sometime in the next four weeks. As the Hotfix.Net site reported, Microsoft has begun rolling out that broader beta of Vista SP2 this week. The build number for the beta is 16489. (Thanks to Neowin for the pointer to the Hotfix site.) Via the Vista Team blog, Microsoft said on October 24 to expect an even wider group of Technology Adoption Program (TAP) testers to get the SP2 beta bits on October 29.
Testers who received invitations to the Vista SP2 beta said they were told it would incorporate Windows Search 4, support for the VIA 64-bit CPU and Bluetooth support. Microsoft confirmed some of those fixes and features will be in the final SP2 in today’s blog posting. The company also said to expect SP2 to: Add the ability to record data on to Blu-Ray media natively in Windows Vista. Add Windows Connect Now (WCN) to simplify Wi-Fi Configuration. Enable the exFAT file system to support UTC timestamps, which allows correct file synchronization across time zones. I haven’t yet heard about any testers getting the Windows Server 2008 SP2 bits. That beta seemingly was timed to coincide with the Vista SP2 one. I’ve asked Microsoft for more information on when testers can expect to get those beta bits. No word so far............
Comodo To Release AV With 64bit Support
May 17, 2008Been visiting the comodo forums after i installed their excellent firewall that is also 64 bit. Aparently they are developing newer antivirus software to replace their current thats nearing release (next month or so should see first open beta of version 3), & guess what, its also going to be free & 64 bit. If its anything like their firewall, im never paying for av again.

The company said in an advance notice that the November edition of the 'Patch Tuesday' release will include one fix labeled 'critical' and a second labeled 'important.' The critical fix addresses a vulnerability in the Microsoft XML Core Services component in Windows 2000, XP, Server 2003, 2008 and Windows Vista. While Microsoft did not disclose the exact nature of the vulnerability, the company said that if exploited it could allow an attacker to remotely execute code on a targeted system. While the second flaw could also allow an attacker to remotely execute code, Microsoft rated the issue as an 'important' risk. The vulnerability lies within a component in Windows 2000, XP, Server 2003, Server 2008 and Windows Vista.
Microsoft offered little more on the nature of the vulnerability. The company typically refrains from disclosing specific details on a flaw until a fix can be released.The November update comes just two weeks after the disclosure and patching of another critical vulnerability in a Windows component. Shortly after the company posted the fix, an attack for the flaw was reported. Microsoft is planning to release the update next Tuesday. Jul 1, 2008I've had Vista x64 installed for about 2 full months now and I've recently begun having a **** ton of problems. One being: 187 seconds. What the ****.Before you ask, here are 'my specs Lots of fast memory, a fast processor, 7200RPM boot drive (not listed), and ****ing awful performance. What gets me is that the delayed boot time is before I even see the "Welcome" screen.
My current boot time distribution:
1. BIOS does all its fancy stuff very quickly (about 6-7 seconds or so)
2. I get to my boot loader and it defaults to Vista after 5 seconds (dual-booting Vista/Ubuntu).
3. I then see the Vista loading screen (black screen with green loading bar) for about 4-5 seconds.
4. SIT AT COMPLETELY BLACK SCREEN FOR 160 SECONDS.
5. Welcome screen/load Startup apps (takes 10 seconds or so)....

May 12, 2010If you have installed Windows Mail on a Windows 7 computer,yesterday's update contains a KB978542 patch which changes msoe.dll so it won't run on Windows 7. I had warned about these types of issues when Win7 was first released. Microsoft claims it was done for security=20 reasons, see To get it working again, replace the new non-working copy of msoe.dll in Windows 7 with a copy of the new patched version of msoe.dll from a Vista machine.=20
Note: I ran into permissions issues when trying to delete the = non-working msoe.dll, so rather than fighting that, I renamed the Win7 Windows Mail directory to "Windows Mail-X", then I copied and pasted the Windows Mail directory from the Vista machine. I suspect that Windows Mail will = become less and less compatible with Win7 as time goes along.=20

Aug 19, 2008I'm running Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit edition Dutch Version, updated with SP1 and all the patches/updates until today. However, I have encountered two problems lately, that might be related. During one of the last Windows update sessions, one of the recommended updates was KB940157: Windows Search 4.0 for Windows Vista for x64-systems (11,8MB).
The update downloaded succesfully, created a restore point, but then during installation of Search 4.0, windows update stops and announces an update fail error:
Failed: 1 update
Errorcode: 800F0900
I've been googling this particular error code in combination with KB940157, but it doesn't bring up any entries. Then later on, I discovered that when I go into the Windows Components window (via Control Panel, Add/remove software), the entire windows stays blank (first it says "Wait a few moments..."). This only lasts a few seconds then shows a complete empty window.
Unable To Open Attachments In Windows Mail: Windows Cannot Find File Name
Jul 29, 2009There are discussions on this general subject but no aparent resolution. About two months ago I was sometimes prevented from opening photo attachments on some emails received from the same party and sometimes could open them. By this I mean, I would click on the paperclip where a list of photos would appear and I'd click on on photo and I'd get a message saying: "Windows cannot find file name (photo captions used by sender).jpg. Make sure your typed the name correctly and then try again." Well, of course I didn't type the file name; the sender did. I could click on the save attachments, and once saved to a folder I could open them from the folder. I forwarded the mail to others, and they report no problems in viewing the photos. I can also view the photos in the email itself, but it would be necessary to scan up and down and from left to right to view the whold photo and the caption would not appear.

Nov 22, 2007I have been using Vista Ultimate x64 for the last 5 months and have to say it's been a massive learing curve due to its fragility - 4 full rebuilds in the last 4 months - and not much fun when using SATA RAID. Anyway, got up yesterday morning, turned on the computer and it had managed to corrupt itself yet again: Windows Defender, Windows Picture Viewer and a host of desktop icons refused to find their pathways home and so decided against a full rebuild and started the repair option with a boot to the DVD. I set this off running and went to work at 12:30pm...
I came back 5 hours later and still had the dialog box " Finalising Registry" running on my screen! Well, a quick restart and i tried the upgrade option once back in Vista from the DVD. This then took and unbelievable 7 hours to complete and was finally ready - after updates - at 01:20am this morning, but a full clean install would have taken about 1-2 hours to finish, so i'll be doing that in future!.........
