Microsoft Anytime Upgrade Rip-Off

Jun 30, 2008

I'm quite happy with Windows Vista and have it on 4 machines. I recently bought a new HP mini note and was going to upgrade from the OEM Vista Business that came on the machine to Vista Ultimate, that is until I checked out the Canadian pricing for an Anytime upgrade. Microsoft wants us to pay $179 to move from business to ultimate which seems like a ridiculous amount. In checking out alternatives I noted that I can buy OEM Ultimate here for $209 or OEM Business for $165, so one would expect to pay some where around $45 more to upgrade not 4 times that amount. Even at retail pricing the price for full Vista Ultimate with SP 1 here is $329 and Vista Business with SP 1 is $299 a difference of $30, so how does Microsoft get off on charging $179 to upgrade from Business to Ultimate. I could see a small up charge say charging $60 but $179? This pricing is a total rip off!

Anytime Upgrade Not Working

Feb 27, 2009

For a recently purchased PC, am considering purchasing a "Windows Anytime Upgrade" from Home Premium 64 to Utltrimate 64. Search of these forums indicate that there have been problems with this upgrade. But, could not find many such posts after late Summer of 2008. Has anyone done such an upgrade withing the past 2-3 months, and if so, were any problems encountered? SP1 came pre-installed, and some of the early 2008 "problems encountered" posts mentioned that SP1 was not on the Upgrade CD. Can anyone confirm that SP1 is now on the Upgrade CD?

Anytime Upgrade Work?

Jun 2, 2008

How does it work? I click on "Anytime Upgrade" & I go to a website where I pay for the upgrade license key, correct? Let's say, for instance, that I want to upgrade from Home Premium to Ultimate. It is an upgrade not the full version, correct? If I format the hard drive & reinstall Windows, can I go straight to Ultimate or must I reinstall Home Premium first & then install the upgrade to Ultimate?

Anytime Upgrade Business -> Ultimate, Not Available...

Apr 1, 2009

Basically, I bought a Dell XPS M1730, this came with Windows Vista Ultimate 32bit. I then thought I'd have a look at Windows 7, so I installed Windows 7.... Yesterday I got fed up with it, fancied a clean wipe of the system and grabbed a Vista disc which I had (not one that came with the original machine, burnt from an iso obtained from my university). After doing a destructive install of Windows Vista, I found that I had installed Business. Now I did not see any options to upgrade to Ultimate (anytime just shows me "learn about the different versions of vista"), and I did not see any options when installing... Obviously I have no key for Business, so when the trial expires Im buggered, how can I get my hands on an Ultimate upgrade?

Anytime Upgrade Home Premium 64 To Ultimate 64?

Apr 15, 2009

Is there an upgrade from Home Premium 64 to Ultimate 64? If so, would it be
available through an MSDN download?

I'm trying to get my new HP dv7 laptop set up to join my home office domain
so I can transfer files, etc. Home Premium won't allow domain membership! My
son-in-law (network engineer) told me I need Ultimate for that. I don't
really want to do a new install from scratch and have to do clean reinstalls
on all my existing software.

Anytime Upgrade To Ultimate Can I Choose Between The 32 And 64 Bit Vista Ultimate

Mar 25, 2008

I Have Windows Vista OEM 32 bit that came on my computer. I noticed that the full retail version of ultimate includes the 32 and 64 bit install. With the anytime upgrade to ultimate can I choose between the 32 and 64 bit vista ultimate? I do realize that I would have to do a clean install of the 64 bit OS. I would like to try the 64 bit version but would also like to be able revert back to the 32 bit if the 64 bit doesn't work out. If I can't then the 32 bit version it is as I need to join a domain.........

Microsoft Update: Sign On With 'Microsoft Update'

Mar 7, 2009

I am running Office Home and Student 2007 and have just run a diagnostic which suggests that my installation is not up to date and that I go to the Microsoft Update site and download any available updates. When I do, I am asked to sign on with 'Microsoft Update'. The idea is, I think, to combine this Microsoft Update with my Windows Update and let Office updates come though along with updates for Vista, IE, etc. I have posted here before with issues concerning updates including a fiasco I had last November which involved Office updates and am wondering, since Office seems to be working well at the moment (I was bored so I did a diagnostic ) should I bother with this or just leave it? Does Office have security issues like IE and Vista?

How To Contact Microsoft

Mar 23, 2008

Several days ago I posted a question concerning the inability of my Microsoft Fingerprint Reader to function. I did not receive answers from anyone in the discussion groups. I spent several hours over several days speaking to a Microsoft tech support supervisor trying to get it to work, to no avail, and the case was closed by Microsoft as having no solution available.

This was not acceptable to me, being the curious person I am. I decided, what the hell, I'll just uninstall my OS, reformat and do a clean install. During the install I installed each and every update and application one at a time, checking the function of my fingerprint reader after each update and application, rebooting after each one. I had many updates and applications to install so it took me two days to discover the problem..........

Can't Get Picture From Microsoft

Mar 2, 2009

By now, having read the headline and looked at the above image, you've concluded that I've finally gone crazy. "That Microsoft news writer at Ars has finally lost it," you mutter sadly, shaking your head. I assure you though, it hasn't happened yet, nor is this an early April Fool's joke. While you can't get the shirt pictured above from Microsoft anymore (no longer available), the company will be offering it again soon: it's called The Misdemeanor. The one that you can currently purchase for a mere $10 is The 101, and it's available at Urban Outfitters. In case you're you're wondering, yes, the binary does translate to "Softwear by Microsoft." Still think this is some kind of prank? The official website for "Softwear by Microsoft, A Clothing Lin." is already live at Microsoft.com.

Microsoft Security Essentials

The Microsoft Security Essentials proved itself. My notebook started to run weird, lately. I was suspicious and start scan the whole system with McAfee, however it stopped on 11% of scan and showed me the error. I started it once more, but it was disabled again.

I have been using the Microsoft Security Essentials on the Windows 7 and because I was thinking about switching to this AV on the Vista at the end of this year, I got rid of the McAfee Total Security and installed the Microsoft, just to give it a try on Vista. Yes, it found and destroyed the trojan in the System32. Today, it blocked the another one during browsing the web.

Rules Of Conduct For Microsoft MVP

May 14, 2008

For all you MVP's & "wannabes" in training, here's a few basic rules:

1) If a poster is having hardware trouble, always respond with "It's YOUR fault, you should have done you HOMEWORK", regardless of the actual problem. In fact, reading the entire post isn't even necessary.

- example: "So what if your new $500 "Vista Certified" video card has no drivers? We never said it would work right NOW, we meant it MIGHT work LATER." BTW, "Homework" = "Upgrade Advisor", yea, we know it's seriously flawed, but who cares? We get to laugh at & ridicule those stupid enough to have trusted it in the first place. It's a "win-win" situation for us if ever there was one.

2) If a poster is having software trouble, always respond with "It's YOUR fault, you should have done you HOMEWORK", regardless of the actual problem. See? Easy isn't it? We went to great lengths to make sure upgraders would have to buy as much new software (and hardware) as possible. See, we have this "deal" with the vendors, but don't mention this online, just blame the vendors instead. They don't care, they're getting rich too. Besides, they won't say anything if they know what's good for them.

3) If a poster protests or questions your reply, take it up a notch. Calling a poster stupid is usually sufficient to put them in their place. How dare they. Better yet, divert all attention by complaining about something totally unrelated, like top-posting or OT posts. Disparaging comments about the posters mental state or physical attributes are always a good way to sidestep any and all issues.......................

Is Microsoft Incapable Of Fixing USB?

Apr 11, 2008

Vista evidently has serious USB issues on many computers (including my own). What concerns me most is that these problems have plagued Vista since launch and Microsoft still have not fixed them. Googling around to try to find solutions to my own problems, I come across people with BRAND NEW computers who are struggling with failing USB ports. So these problems are persisting nearly a year since Vista public release, and many years since the beta release. I am therefore left wondering if Microsoft have completely no idea what the problem is and are completely unable to resolve the problem?
