Cannot Access Microsoft.com
Jun 9, 2009
I don't know why, but I can't get microsoft.com to load. I keep getting this message:
Address Not Found
Firefox can't find the server at 'Microsoft Corporation'
[url]
The browser could not find the host server for the provided address.
* Did you make a mistake when typing the domain(e.g."ww.mozilla.org"insteadof "www.mozilla.org")
* Are you certain this domain address exists? Its registration mayhave expired.
*Are you unable to browse other sites? Check your network connection and DNS server settings.
* Is your computer or network protected by a firewall or proxy? Incorrect settings can interfere with Web browsing.
I don't know how to fix this problem because it's never happened before.

Four days ago, I purchased a brand new Acer laptop with Vista Home Premium pre-installed. I registerd the MAC address on my wireless LAN (using a Draytek Vigor 2600We router. I can reach quite a lot of websites either through IE or Opera, but cannot reach Microsoft, Google, Yahoo, Symantec and others. My laptop has 3Gb of RAM and an Intel core duo processor so it is more than adequate.

Can Microsoft delete files on my computer through VISTA without my consent? If so, what files can be deleted? Can files be accessed by them the same way? Again, if so, does anyone have a link to website documenting this?

I was using Microsoft Outlook Express as my mail client. Then Microsoft advised users to update to Windows Mail since they no longer supported Outlook Express..so I did. Now Microsoft is directing users to install Microsoft LIVE Mail? What is the difference between Microsoft Mail (which I am running) and Microsoft LIVE Mail....and, why would a user run LIVE over MAIL?

I try to access folders under my name (set up as administrator), most of the time I get access denied. It is driving me nuts. I want to change the start menu and get rid of a bunch of garbage but I can't enter the folder to do so. When I use the start menu program, it only has a few basic folders. This happens frequently, even when trying to view pictures or video in the folder. What do I need to change to remove this very annoying problem?

I have my laptop connecting to a server under AD control. My laptop is not joined to AD by design. I set up some files using 'Sync' to have them available to me offline. My AD password has since changed and I cannot connect to the server to have access to other files set up for offline access. When I attempt to remap the drive, I get an error stating I am already connected using the credentials provided. This is not true, since I cannot access the server. What do I need to do to fix this problem?

I think I might have a good one for you.. I am working on an Acer 5610z Notebook for a friend of mine. He was setting the parental controls and managed to control his account which had admin access. the user listing has the account listing as an admin but he only has standard user access. His was the "only" admin account.. While he was doing this he managed to deny access to the boot drive. The drive reads as "Access Denied". The machine boots up and a person can play games etc.. but network access is restricted.

Our Vista laptops (& my Xbox) access our basic Windows Home Server system through a Netgear router. It's all fine, but I want to (easily & quickly!) restrict & control when some laptops can access the internet while allowing free access to the server. (For instance, so children's internet access can be monitored but they can always get to photos & backups, etc. on the server.)

I am running Office Home and Student 2007 and have just run a diagnostic which suggests that my installation is not up to date and that I go to the Microsoft Update site and download any available updates. When I do, I am asked to sign on with 'Microsoft Update'. The idea is, I think, to combine this Microsoft Update with my Windows Update and let Office updates come though along with updates for Vista, IE, etc. I have posted here before with issues concerning updates including a fiasco I had last November which involved Office updates and am wondering, since Office seems to be working well at the moment (I was bored so I did a diagnostic ) should I bother with this or just leave it? Does Office have security issues like IE and Vista?

I ran Spybot S&D, got rid of any viruses it got and Mallware Bytes, again, removed everything. Even ran McAfee and got rid of whatever. But each time i run the scan on Spybot S&D it finds site that redirect me. I press fix selected items but it responds by saying "cannot access hosts file. Access is denied" I tried to untick the "protect hosts file form hijackers" in IE tweaks but keeps getting checked. On top of that the Hosts file is missing.

Several days ago I posted a question concerning the inability of my Microsoft Fingerprint Reader to function. I did not receive answers from anyone in the discussion groups. I spent several hours over several days speaking to a Microsoft tech support supervisor trying to get it to work, to no avail, and the case was closed by Microsoft as having no solution available.
This was not acceptable to me, being the curious person I am. I decided, what the hell, I'll just uninstall my OS, reformat and do a clean install. During the install I installed each and every update and application one at a time, checking the function of my fingerprint reader after each update and application, rebooting after each one. I had many updates and applications to install so it took me two days to discover the problem..........

By now, having read the headline and looked at the above image, you've concluded that I've finally gone crazy. "That Microsoft news writer at Ars has finally lost it," you mutter sadly, shaking your head. I assure you though, it hasn't happened yet, nor is this an early April Fool's joke. While you can't get the shirt pictured above from Microsoft anymore (no longer available), the company will be offering it again soon: it's called The Misdemeanor. The one that you can currently purchase for a mere $10 is The 101, and it's available at Urban Outfitters. In case you're you're wondering, yes, the binary does translate to "Softwear by Microsoft." Still think this is some kind of prank? The official website for "Softwear by Microsoft, A Clothing Lin." is already live at Microsoft.com.

The Microsoft Security Essentials proved itself. My notebook started to run weird, lately. I was suspicious and start scan the whole system with McAfee, however it stopped on 11% of scan and showed me the error. I started it once more, but it was disabled again.
I have been using the Microsoft Security Essentials on the Windows 7 and because I was thinking about switching to this AV on the Vista at the end of this year, I got rid of the McAfee Total Security and installed the Microsoft, just to give it a try on Vista. Yes, it found and destroyed the trojan in the System32. Today, it blocked the another one during browsing the web.

For all you MVP's & "wannabes" in training, here's a few basic rules:
1) If a poster is having hardware trouble, always respond with "It's YOUR fault, you should have done you HOMEWORK", regardless of the actual problem. In fact, reading the entire post isn't even necessary.
- example: "So what if your new $500 "Vista Certified" video card has no drivers? We never said it would work right NOW, we meant it MIGHT work LATER." BTW, "Homework" = "Upgrade Advisor", yea, we know it's seriously flawed, but who cares? We get to laugh at & ridicule those stupid enough to have trusted it in the first place. It's a "win-win" situation for us if ever there was one.
2) If a poster is having software trouble, always respond with "It's YOUR fault, you should have done you HOMEWORK", regardless of the actual problem. See? Easy isn't it? We went to great lengths to make sure upgraders would have to buy as much new software (and hardware) as possible. See, we have this "deal" with the vendors, but don't mention this online, just blame the vendors instead. They don't care, they're getting rich too. Besides, they won't say anything if they know what's good for them.
3) If a poster protests or questions your reply, take it up a notch. Calling a poster stupid is usually sufficient to put them in their place. How dare they. Better yet, divert all attention by complaining about something totally unrelated, like top-posting or OT posts. Disparaging comments about the posters mental state or physical attributes are always a good way to sidestep any and all issues.......................

Microsoft bashers , that right you know who you are . You people are sad. I never before seen such a bunch of low life to spend your time bashing Microsoft. Every company has its fault but with all its fault you seem to spend your time bashing them , you guys are true clowns. What make me laugh is all the free time you have wasting away . Why don't you try to use your wasted mind on creating a operating system . This way instead of bashing Microsoft you can bash yourself as to how stupid you really are. GET A LIFE AND GET OFF THIS NEWSGROUP CLOWN. Microsoft why can't you block there isp. Or give MVP the power to delete them . Either way something needs to be done to these morons. I'm quite happy with Windows Vista and have it on 4 machines. I recently bought a new HP mini note and was going to upgrade from the OEM Vista Business that came on the machine to Vista Ultimate, that is until I checked out the Canadian pricing for an Anytime upgrade. Microsoft wants us to pay $179 to move from business to ultimate which seems like a ridiculous amount. In checking out alternatives I noted that I can buy OEM Ultimate here for $209 or OEM Business for $165, so one would expect to pay some where around $45 more to upgrade not 4 times that amount. Even at retail pricing the price for full Vista Ultimate with SP 1 here is $329 and Vista Business with SP 1 is $299 a difference of $30, so how does Microsoft get off on charging $179 to upgrade from Business to Ultimate. I could see a small up charge say charging $60 but $179? This pricing is a total rip off!

Vista evidently has serious USB issues on many computers (including my own). What concerns me most is that these problems have plagued Vista since launch and Microsoft still have not fixed them. Googling around to try to find solutions to my own problems, I come across people with BRAND NEW computers who are struggling with failing USB ports. So these problems are persisting nearly a year since Vista public release, and many years since the beta release. I am therefore left wondering if Microsoft have completely no idea what the problem is and are completely unable to resolve the problem?

I am running win xp 32 and downloaded vista 64 from the microsoft store. I have 3 files, Vista_HomePremium_SP1_64bit_English_Upgrade_Download_Part1_66I-01937.exe install.wim boot.wim. running the .exe file creates and populates a folder called 'Vista' then results in the following error
Windows Vista Setup Preparation. Can not extract Windows Vista Setup to your hard drive. Please ensure that you can create files and folders in the same folder where VistaSetupPrep.exe was downloaded. For product support return to your Digital Locker and view Purchase History to click on the support link for Windows Vista.
As I can't run the 64 bit upgrade from 32 bit XP I need to make a bootable cd from Microsoft give no information regarding installation. From searching the web I am lead to believe there is no way to make a bootable dvd from these files.
