Live OneCare, Unable To Update
Mar 23, 2008
Windows Live OneCare was ok last night when I turned my computer off, but today says it's out of date, and can't get update to work. Have Vista Home Premium. Saw an error, 0X0400407, haven't been able to find what that error means.

I've been given a new Windows Live OneCare subscription to try, and I
currently use AVG Internet Security, for 3 home computers, all running Vista.
I'd like to know if Onecare is something I should give up the AVG for. I have
a subscription with AVG through Feb of next year, (paid for) so I don't want
to give it up unless there is particulary good benefit from it.
Could someone give a review of these two programs?

I uninstalled Vista SP1 for several reasons. Live OneCare keeps telling me I need to "Install missing updates." Is there any way I can tell OneCare NOT to alert me about the SP1 update?

I uninstalled (using the removal tool) Norton and installed OneCare on a trial basis. Do I need any additional spyware with this? Spybot, for example.

In a very surprising move, Microsoft has announced today that Windows Live OneCare customers will be getting the shaft next year. The software giant has decided to replace OneCare with a free security solution (codenamed "Morro") to be released in the second half of next year. The yet-to-be-announced product will be a realtime anti-malware protection solution, whereas OneCare offered that plus backup and management features. Sales of the Windows Live OneCare subscription service as well as Windows Live OneCare for Server on SBS 2008 will end on June 30, 2009.
If your subscription is about to run out, I'd suggest looking for an alternative instead of renewing a product that is on its way out the door. Sure, OneCare will continue to be available online until Morro is available and your subscription will still work until it ends, but Microsoft's decision makes the company look unreliable. I am running Vista x64 Ultimate SP2 on my Remote Machine. When I connect to the DVR Machine, through RDC (remote desktop connection)on my local network, I am able to see all the files and open the SuperDVR software. I am unable to see the live video feeds through the RDC. I am able to view any older recordings which are saved as avi files. I am able to make changes to settings in the SUpreDVR software, just not see the live video.

Since Windows Mail is part of Vista, when I do a Windows 7 Upgrade, and since Vista will be replaced by Windows 7, what will happen with Windows Mail? Will it be deleted as Vista is removed? Should I update to to Windows LIVE Mail.

I am unable to access internet live links from Windows Mail. when I try, I get - Internet Explorer has stopped working' 'a problem caused the program to top working correctly' Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available', which of course it does not! The same applies if I click Start / Help and Support - I am unable to access any of the live links under 'Ask Someone'. I have posed this question in microsoft/public/windows/vista/mail but they are unable to help. I am trying to find a solution without having to pay Microsoft ?40+.

I have an Asus Z53E series laptop. I never had this problem before, & suddenly I started to get this message around two months ago: "Asus live update stopped working", then internet explorer closes. The fault module name is: "kernel32.dll" I don`t understand what`s changed for the live update to stop working, the only downloads done on the last couple of months have been mostly automatic windows updates, & other general updates like adobe.
I have realized recently that "Asus live update" seems to close when I try to upload pictures from my computer to facebook. It seems to go crazy when I attempt any sort of Internet uploading. What I`ve been doing is exiting the Live update when the messagge window pops up, & that seems to be working, for the time being. But the problem is still there. Somebody said in a forum that "Asus live update" is useless, & that it should be removed from the programs cos it has no use & it malfunctions a lot.

I have been using Windows Mail for my Yahoo addresses and by right clicking on the W.M. icon in the programme list above the start button I put a shortcut on to the desktop that has been working very well. Today I have combined Yahoo and Hotmail addresses under the WLM umbrella. But I cannot find how to make a shortcut. Nowhere can I find the relevant WLM icon to make a shortcut from. Obviously I am missing something, somewhere, but what is it?

Want to update to Java 6 17 but when I try to install in 32 bit IE or firefox (which i use the most) I run into a problem because the old version of Java can't be found! On control panel and remove program utility I can see the update 6 11 but when I try to uninstall then a box pops up telling me that it can't proceed as the source file can't be located (jre 1.6.0_11-c-l.msi). I think this is why the later version won't install because it looks for the older version first? I have tried to run microsoft utility cleaner but I get a error code 800A0046 and Microsoft VBScript runtime error. Also tried Revo uninstaller but this could not get past the same pop up box seen when using remove a program via control panel!

For background on this post, see "Unable to save HTML file" posted 9/17/2009 12:31PM. Comments:
(1) A reset of IE did not fix the problem.
(2) A system restore to the day before installing QuickTime did fix the problem. This doesn't prove that QuickTime is at fault, of course, but I still have my suspicions. I will probably reload QuickTime shortly, and if the problem returns, I'll post it.
Note: It appears that the system restore reversed the IE reset, so for anyone (like me) who might be nervous about doing the reset, the restore is a safety backup.

I am unable to install Security Vista update KB967723 (released very recently). When I attempt to install this patch I get the error code '80070020'.
I have downloaded this patch manually to install with no success. I have tried turning off my anti-virus (AVG) and windows firewall, with again no success. I keep getting the above error code.
I have also scanned my system with AVG, Windows defender, Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal & Ad-Aware (nil viruses etc...)

When i installed IE 8 as part of a Windows update I now have a problem opening pictures and other attachments in Winmail. I note that everyone appears to be having a problem with this update. If it does not work, it needs to be removed from the updates for Windows Vista. Vista is enough of a pain without adding to it.

32-bit Vista Home Premium. Have Windows Live OneCare installed, but am getting a msg that the service is disabled. I cannot get into services either through the start search box or through the control panel. If I use the box, the service never displays and I can no longer use the start menu unless I go to task manager and log off and then log back on. If I use the control panel, it just sits there with the revolving blue circle. If I open task manager and click on the services tab there is a service listed called OcHealthMon which is described as Window Live One Care Health Monitor and it says the status is stopped. If I right click and select start service I get the msg 'The operation could not be completed. Access is denied"
If I boot in safe mode I can go into services, but it says that OneCare has an Automatic startup type and is already started. I have MalwareBytes installed on the PC and it finds no malicious items in safe mode, but in normal startup the desktop icon has a litle security center emblem in the lower right hand corner. I cannot open the security center from the control panel - blue wheel again.

For some reason OneCare is not allowing me to restore to the latest backup (7 days ago). I can only select the main OneCare Backup folder, so I decided to allow this restore. It took quite a few hours and now I'm in shock! It actually restored everything from the beginning of 2008; there are thousands of files everywhere and some of my programs are not working correctly. How can I setup OneCare properly to restore to the last backup? I've spoken to Onecare support twice today. I guess my settings are messed up as well ecause we were not able to allow support to access my computer. It's wierd that at 8 a.m. both the phone agent and later the chat agent said they would send me a step-by-step 'how to' email but I've not received either of them.

That is the message I get from the icon in my Vista tray. When I try to manually check for Windows Updates I get the message that I need to "first install an update for Windows Update". When I try to install that update for Windows Update, I get error code 80070643. There is a lot written about Windows Update error 80070643 having specifically to do with restarting the Office Source Engine for Microsoft Office 2003. HOWEVER, I do not have Microsoft Office 2003 installed on my system and this is not my issue! I am quite fearful at this point that I am vulnerable to all sorts of attacks considering that I haven't updated Vista for about 6 months now. This is not good.
