Update - 64 Home Premium, Service Pack 2

Dec 1, 2009

I have the Windows Automatic Update feature turned off. Every couple of weeks I manually update and install only critical and what I deem as necessary for my machine updates. Everything went fine the end of October, updates successfully installed. I also installed the English language pack as my OS was in German. I don't think the language pack has anything to do with the problems I'm about to describe. In early November I went to do a manual update and got this screen:

it's telling me that I need to update the updater. No big deal there. But, it's also telling me that I NEVER checked for updates and updates were NEVER installed. Not true, according to the next window I've got 112 updates in installed: Anyways, I continue to update the updater. It then tells me it can't complete the job and says to restart the computer and try to update again, which I did:.........

Unable To Update Java

Nov 10, 2009

Want to update to Java 6 17 but when I try to install in 32 bit IE or firefox (which i use the most) I run into a problem because the old version of Java can't be found! On control panel and remove program utility I can see the update 6 11 but when I try to uninstall then a box pops up telling me that it can't proceed as the source file can't be located (jre 1.6.0_11-c-l.msi). I think this is why the later version won't install because it looks for the older version first? I have tried to run microsoft utility cleaner but I get a error code 800A0046 and Microsoft VBScript runtime error. Also tried Revo uninstaller but this could not get past the same pop up box seen when using remove a program via control panel!

Update: Unable To Save HTML File

Sep 21, 2009

For background on this post, see "Unable to save HTML file" posted 9/17/2009 12:31PM. Comments:

(1) A reset of IE did not fix the problem.
(2) A system restore to the day before installing QuickTime did fix the problem. This doesn't prove that QuickTime is at fault, of course, but I still have my suspicions. I will probably reload QuickTime shortly, and if the problem returns, I'll post it.

Note: It appears that the system restore reversed the IE reset, so for anyone (like me) who might be nervous about doing the reset, the restore is a safety backup.

I have downloaded this patch manually to install with no success. I have tried turning off my anti-virus (AVG) and windows firewall, with again no success. I keep getting the above error code.

I have also scanned my system with AVG, Windows defender, Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal & Ad-Aware (nil viruses etc...)

Premium Repair Install Make Changes To The Premium OS On P1

May 24, 2008

I am considering a repair install for sometime in the future if I can't get the misc. issues fixed. I could do a clean install but wouldn't learn much that way.
Premium on P1 is the manufacturer's preinstalled OS from which I have removed the bloatware, cleaned it up & installed SP1 but am left with a few quirky behaviors.

sfc /scannow doesn't find any integrity violations. I have a Vista SP1 install DVD with all versions and the Upgrade/repair option is available in Premium using this DVD, I checked. I've read the tutorial but just double checking to be sure. I have everything imaged with Acronis but still wouldn't want to get into restoring the images.

A repair install should only make changes to the Premium OS on P1? I may have to repair my triple boot? (I'm using EasyBCD)

When Try To Install That Update For Windows Update Get Error Code 80070643.

Apr 11, 2008

That is the message I get from the icon in my Vista tray. When I try to manually check for Windows Updates I get the message that I need to "first install an update for Windows Update". When I try to install that update for Windows Update, I get error code 80070643. There is a lot written about Windows Update error 80070643 having specifically to do with restarting the Office Source Engine for Microsoft Office 2003. HOWEVER, I do not have Microsoft Office 2003 installed on my system and this is not my issue! I am quite fearful at this point that I am vulnerable to all sorts of attacks considering that I haven't updated Vista for about 6 months now. This is not good.

Java JRE6, Update 10, Downloaded And Installed The Update

Oct 22, 2008

As far as I can determine, this update (released 22Oct08) does not work, at least not with Windows Vista Home Premium. I had update 7 running, and got an update notification for Release 10 earlier today. Downloaded and installed the update, tried the Java test page, Firefox (both 3.0.3 and today's Minefield beta-test for Firefox 3.1) hung. Tried the update in IE7, that, too, hung.

Went to Control Panel, clicked on the Java icon, had some problems opening it; when it did finally open, I went into Advanced and found that Update 10 was not recognizing IE. Opened IE, redownloaded the off-line update, to see if that worked; answer is, no, it still did not recognize IE. Back to Java, found the off-line installed for Update 7, removed 10, reinstalled 7; Java works once again. In the midst of this aggravation, trying to figure out what the problem was, I did find one link to an article that said Update 10 had been delayed due to some unspecified problem. Seems to me that, at least for Vista Home Premium, there is still at least one unspecified problem with Update 10.

Configure Windows Update To Update All Microsoft Apps On Your PC

May 6, 2007

Microsoft Update was first released a few years ago for Windows XP and Server 2003 as a great way to update all of your Microsoft software installed on your PC. Not only would it update Windows, but it would also update Microsoft Office.  Are you a Microsoft Outlook user? If so, Microsoft Update would even download updated junk mail signatures when they are released.

In Windows Vista the new Windows Update application is no longer web-based. Microsoft has built-in the old Microsoft Update functionality into the new interface but you need to turn it on before you can use it.  Follow these steps to turn on updates for other Microsoft applications: ...

How To Difference Premium 32 To Premium 64

Mar 23, 2008

I have Vista premium 32 bit, I want the 64 bit version of premium. My friend said he paid $10 for shipping of the 64 home edition but paid no other cost. do i have to pay for a $160 upgrade to 64 or can i also pay $10 since i have a purchased copy of 32 vista? I have heard that all versions of the 64 bit upgrade are on the same cd, so I should be able to install premium 64 from my friends home 64 cd. Correct? what is the crap i have read about having to have full version of XP to upgrade to 64 vista....does this sound pretty stupid to anyone else...considering if a new copy of vista was bought, you obviously did not purchase XP.....

Windows Update Fail To Update

Mar 21, 2009

The last time an update was installed was in January..since the next time i was offered an update, Windows Update or any of the programs that use windows update fail to update. Also i can't download the updates manually..standalone msu installers also dont work.. windows defender, IE8 installations also fail to update. And unfortunately i have deleted the recent system restore checkpoints before i knew about this problem. Windows Update gives error 80070002, i have tried the "solution" to delete temp update files, and all other solutions i could find on the internet. Windows defender gives the same error.

The updates can be downloaded from windows update, but cannot be download (not even manually in .msu package) I also lost many shortcut files of MS Office (the icon turned white and they lost their target). Some shortcuts of 3rd party programs are also lost (which were supposed to be in c:windowsinstallerlabla I have Windows Vista Home Basic with SP1 (SP1 came with the ssytem when i bought it). This is very weird. I have no other choice than to reformat drive and use recovery disk.

Microsoft Update: Sign On With 'Microsoft Update'

Mar 7, 2009

I am running Office Home and Student 2007 and have just run a diagnostic which suggests that my installation is not up to date and that I go to the Microsoft Update site and download any available updates. When I do, I am asked to sign on with 'Microsoft Update'. The idea is, I think, to combine this Microsoft Update with my Windows Update and let Office updates come though along with updates for Vista, IE, etc. I have posted here before with issues concerning updates including a fiasco I had last November which involved Office updates and am wondering, since Office seems to be working well at the moment (I was bored so I did a diagnostic ) should I bother with this or just leave it? Does Office have security issues like IE and Vista?

Premium 64-bit Installation

Jul 3, 2008

The installation just stops after loading all the Windows files after booting from the DVD. Everything loads ok (seemingly) but then there's just this blue/green screen and i get no further. Mouse is movable however so it's not quite frozen either (confusing). I have currently got an installation of XP Pro 32-bit running perfectly and it has shows no problems with the hardware, which is as follows:

The full name of the new OS is Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium SP1 64-bit SWE OEM, which I got with the new pc i purchased. BIOS has been upgraded to the latest version, I have tried with only running 1 (one) memory module (2gb), but still this problem persists. I have yet to try the Slipstream SP1 Tutorial that I've found on this forum, as I still think it's a Vista vs hardware compatibility issue.
