Is there a way to increase the max WEI score to something higher than 5.9 in Vista? I don't mean the xml file hack where you can change the number for each category to anything you want, but rather an increase on the maximum limit (currently 5.9) that the WEI can display. Maybe change it to something around Win7's level? Is this possible?
View 6 RepliesI have windows Vista which had 2Gb of memory. The index was 5.2, that was the memory score. I have added another 2Gb. As its a 32bit OS only 3.5 GB is detected, but when I updated my windows experience the score went down for 5.2 to 5.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a Dell Inspiron 9100 laptop which so far had 512 MB RAM and it ran beautifully under XP. Last month I upgraded to Vista Ultimate and got a WEI of 2.0 because my memory rating was 2.0. All the other scores were 3.7 and above. Here's the strange bit. Last week I upgraded the memory to 1.25 GB by removing one 256 MB module and inserting a 1GB pqi PC3200 DDR 400 module that I bought from Newegg. It had very good customer reviews. The score for memory dropped to 1.6 after the increase in memory! Today I removed the remaining 256MB and inserted another pqi 1GB to bring the total to max of 2GB. The score than increased to a lowly 2.5. My question is how come a full 2 GB of memory not increasing the score? How are people getting higher scores with 1GB on their machines? The Inspiron 9100 is a workhorse with very good specs and I expected it to get a very good WEI running vista.

View 5 Replies View RelatedThis morning my computer started issuing security alerts notifying me that the firewall was off as was the malware. I turn the firewall on but under the malware section it indicates that it is reporting to the security centre in a format that is no longer supported. It also has a little Not Compatible icon to the right of the malware icon on the left. Once the firewall is turned on and the malware turns from red to yellow when we turn it on the shield in the bottom right of the screen goes yellow for a while but eventually it goes red again and I am again notified that the firewall is off and the malware is off as well.
I know my subscription is still in effect and according to the system it expires 10/03/2010.
I just noticed when I went to the windows experience index page and clicked on it to see the details, all the info is gone and it's just this...

Then I clicked on the WEI to check how each of my components rated. It was blank!! (see "Capture2"). Has anyone any idea how this happened? Or how to fix it?

The Windows Experience Index assessment runs, yet upon completion the "cannot complete assessment" error message pops up. How do I go about figuring out what is causing the problem? I've read that NVIDIA drivers may be causing the issue, but I have the most up to date drivers out there, and with a 9800GTX+ everything runs beautifully, so I don't understand why the experience index would be having a problem with that. I built my system a few months ago and have tried and tried to fix this error on several occasions, and have always failed.

View 7 Replies View RelatedIm new to vista and have looked over this forum but cant seem to find an answer to my issue...which is: I open "Computer" then press on "Searches" (on the left) and then open "Everywhere" which returns 5,000 results...PLEASE how do i clear this list. I have rebuilt the index after removing ALL folders etc to index...now displays ZERO indexed items.
I have then turned indexing off completely on all drives (right click/properties/untick indexing option and select ALL files and subfolders)...and via admin tools/services/windows search (disabled after stopping service) I have rebooted and still thousands of results come up under: Searches/Everywhere Its driving me nuts

My windows 7 dual boot OS is the one I use to play all my games now, which by the way, I did not know this would be the case, hence, why I only made it about 40 GBs, leaving the Vista partition the bigger of the two.
Well, it has come time to install, yet, another game but I only have about 5 GBs left and the game needs 10GBs to install. Sure, I could uninstall the other 2 games I have already installed but, I am only half way done with them.
Anyways, I have plenty of space on my Vista partition and I would like to know if Acronis Disk Director is as easy to use as I have read. Aside from this, do I need to be worry about loosing any info (images, documents, etc, etc) on my Vista OS once I start the process or should I stop worrying so much.
When I go from my desktop to my internet homepage (yahoo), I sometimes get a small window , and sometimes get a whole-page size window. I prefer the whole-page size without having to click that middle restore button on the upper right-hand corner of my screen everytime I go to my homepage. First, what are the names that describe the smaller size window, and the larger one? Is that what a thumbnail is? Second, I must presume there's a setting somewhere, where I can toggle the whole-page size preference when I go from my desktop to homepage. Can you tell me if there is, and how do I get to it?

I came across ReadyBoot and looked around the properties, and it mentions something about the amount of RAM it uses to boot up to load processes and drivers etc. The default size is 20MB, so I was thinking, the more stuff you have to load at bootup, would increasing this size result in any benefit at all? As once this is full, I guess it uses the hard drive, which would be considerably slower.

Drive 0 has Vista Business installed. I'm dual booting Server 2008 Standard which is on Drive 1.
I want to increase the size of Drive 1. What is the best way to do this?
I was thinking I could boot in Vista (Drive 0) and make a full backup of Drive 1. Upgrade Drive 1 to the large disk and then restore Drive 1 from backup. What other method can I use?
I'm trying to scan a newspaper article and send it as an attachment. The print is way too small to read. I've tried increasing the size within the document itself using MS Works as well as Open Office and it doesn't make it clearer. I've also tried increasing the size on my copier and that doesn't help.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to go entirely Vista. I have two partitions, the C.: = partition is my Vista partition. The D.: partition it's what's left of = my XP installation. I wish to get rid of the XP installation and just = have one partition that is Vista. I have updated via Windows update, run = a "CHKDSK" did a cleanup on the current Vista partition and back things = up on my external USB using Norton ghost.
What is the best method of extending the C: partition? Do I simply = un-allocate the D: partition and then extend the C: Vista partition? Do = I have to format the D: partition?
Last week I purchased my 1st laptop and thus entered the world of Vista after running Win XP home since it 1st came out. I'm a senior at 62, and my eyesight isn't the best anymore. I tried 1024x600 for larger font size but didn't like how graphics and Icons looked, so I went back to the default of 1288x600. My problem is the the font size including emails is just too small, so I'm forced to continually use Control + to increase it. Is there a way to change the font size so I don't have to do this. I'm running Firefox 3.07 and the latest version of Thunderbird. My laptop is a Toshiba Satellite L305D-S5934
View 4 Replies View RelatedI seem to suddenly have lost capability to do various things with my PC (I am admin, Vista still correctly displays that I am admin). For instance I can no longer send/receive emails from my Outlook 2003. It says "you don't have appropriate ermissions to perform this operation".
From time to time it complains that extend.dat has disappeared whereas this is not true, it is still to be found under "C:Users<username>AppDataLocalMicrosoftOutlook".
I have ensured ownership and full control under my username of C:Users<username>AppDataLocalMicrosoftOutlook as well as C:UsersGregoireApplication DataMicrosoftOutlook.
I have also copied my Outlook.pst file to OutlookWhiteKnight.pst and redirected my inbox and mail delivery to this but TO NO AVAIL.
Of course if I turn User Access Control off it works fine again but that's a bit overstretched and surely there is a way to go back to the previous state without killing UAC.
Other things that have happened is I lost my ability to scan, ability to copy certain files from my wife's account to our archive and other sweets like this.
Ah and one last element of detail is that my wife does not have the problem and she is a standard user.
What I *suspect* the initial cause might be is that I have installed a security sweeper from my remote-access website from my employer and it probably messed up with the dtcom config but that's where my knowledge stops. I checked the config the INTERACTIVE user was there (don't ask me what that is, I found that following some threads on google and various websites). I have of course a proper helpdesk from work but they claim it's not their fault and that it can't possibly be because I am the first to report such a problem amongst many users and that as per policy they won't help me with my personal laptop etc etc. Anyway that suspicion itself as to the cause won't help me much.
I've installed Vista recently on my old hdd and after few days I started to notice strange things, during some time whille vista is running (like 20 hours), when I download anything (even at 200 KBs), music starts to stuck every 20 secs or so, when loading video and playing at same time, this happens even more often.
I thought it's my HDD so bought Caviar Black and after installing Vista, few days it was running fine, then again, today I start to experience the same thing.
I just built a new machine:I ran the experience index test, and I got 1.9 on the Aero performance index and 1.0 on the 3D Graphics Performance index. This is the report that I got from Vista:
