How To Customize Search Result Columns

Mar 21, 2008

I am desperatly trying to change Vistas default search result columns. Everytime I use the do a search, I change the coulmns to "Name, Folder Path, Size, Type". Unforunatly Vista only remembers my settings for the already changed folders. If I search a different/new folder it defauls back to "Name, Date modified, Type, Folder, Authors, Tags".

Where can I change the default columns? As I do not want to change the columns for each and every folder ... I have already customizes Vista's default folder templates in "C:Users<username>" , but this has no effect on the search result. Customizing the searches in "C:Users<username>Searches" has also no use, as theese are the saved searches.

Set Default Search Results Columns?

Jun 16, 2008

When performing a search in Vista the results show the (thoroughly confusing and useless) "Folder" column. How can I *permanently* set this to the "Folder path" column. It would also be nice to get rid of the 'Author' and 'Tags' columns.

Folder Options No Longer Appears As A Search Result

Jun 11, 2009

A few months ago, I was messing around with the Windows indexing options , adding folders, etc. and it seems to have screwed up the way Search works. I often need to access Folder Options, and I found the easiest way to do this was by hitting the Start key and typing "Folder" since I'm used to "Launchy" type utilities. However, for some reason, Folder Options no longer appears as a search result. I've rebuilt the index several times and it still doesn't show up. Neither does Programs and Features. I haven't tested every Control Panel utility but these seem to be the only 2 so far that do not show up on Search.

"Search" Vista It Take Ages If You Get Any Result At All

Mar 27, 2008

Why "Search" is so ineffective in Vista (Ult)? When searching in Win XP internally on PC or on news groups results are shown almost immediately. But in Vista it take ages if you get any result at all.

Folder Columns

Mar 20, 2009

This drives me nuts constantly. Is there some way to set it so that I never ever have to see a certain column? "Tags" for instance, I find it useless and just taking up space that I could use for when I need to right click, yet it seems to show up in every folder regardless of what content is in that folder.

Function Key Can't Desired Result

Jan 24, 2010

i am currently using dell inspiron 1440 laptop with windows vista ultimate 64 bit...my problem is, that every time i have to use any function key (like f1 or f2 etc) i have to press "Fn" key as well to get the desired result...for example...for refreshing any page instead of pressing only "f5"....i have to press "fn+f5".the same goes with all function keys....and while playing some games it becomes very annoying to press fn key each time i have to press any function key....is there any way to reverse the function of fn key...because by simply pressing f5 my brightness increases. so all i want is that i should be able to use "only f5" for refreshing the page and "fn+f5" to increase the brightness ....

Modified Permissions As A Result Of Virus.

Mar 23, 2010

I was recently victim to a malware attack on my computer, quite a few nasty rogues. Included ave.exe, irz.exe, Ikydua.exe, Ikydub.exe, Ikyduc.exe, Ikydud.exe, and many many more. They would launch whenver I tried to open any application that the viruses thought could be used against them. Anyways, I finally reclaimed control of my computer and quarantined and deleted all of the bad exes and registry keys. However, my permissions are still messed up from the attack. For example, I can no longer open regedit or merge .reg files.

Also, I believe the attack originated from somebody using an IP sniffer on an internet forum and specifically targeting my IP. I talked to some friends who's IPs were also compromised, and they said that they were attacked at around the same time. So, is there any way I can change my external IP to avoid future attacks? I'm hooked up via a cable modem.

Bug In Windows Explorer Can Result In Lost Files

Mar 23, 2008

I believe I've found a bug in Windows Explorer that I can reproduce reliably. If anyone can get this to a QA engineer in the Vista group at Microsoft

1. Open the Windows explorer browser (not Internet Explorer). Set it up so that you that you can see folders in the left-hand tree view panel and files in the right-hand list panel.

2. Create a new folder called "Test" and a subfolder below it called "TestSub".

3. In the SubTest folder, create three text files. Call them "Test1.txt", "Test2.txt" and "Test3.txt". Just to make the files non-empty, open them up and type a single character into each (I typed "x") and save.

4. In the left-hand tree view, click on any folder that is not in the Test -> SubTest hierarchy.

5. Again from the left-hand tree view, single click on the "TestSub" folder...........

Search Failing With Special/technical Searches Rather Than Simple Filename Search, 85% Of This OS Is Now Great

Jun 22, 2009

except for a few grand issues like Search failing with special/technical searches rather than simple filename search, 85% of this OS is now great. I love it now. And can you guess how many processes show up in TaskManager? 26. ONLY TWENTY SIX. My IE8 starts up lightning fast and swings by all sites except videos, for certain sites w/FlashPlayer & Videos I enable CompatibilityView which aligns those older sites to IE8.

Applications startup as if they were already loaded into Memory, faster than in WinXP. Who knew? It feels like quad-core at 4GHz, seriously. Everything is momentary as if it were loaded from RAM This OS is still a failure, however, versus WinXP. Are you shocked to hear "failure" after my praises, do I contradict myself? No. Because most people are far from my tenacity and just by education, hobbies and profession I alway stune up things to perfection. My cheap car leaves far more expensive models wondering what rocket had just passed them on LIE Expressway. I enjoy tinkering with technology.

It took me 2 weeks (?) to tune up Vista beast to be a polished fast, bug-free beast. It's more convoluted than was tuning WindowsXP. I spent several days in Registry, GroupPolicies, SecPolicies, filesystem digging out and blatantly renaming & moving system files no one is supposed to touch.........

Windows Ultimate X64 Search Engine - Search Fails To Index

Jun 18, 2009

I've got an apparently "broken" search installation. So that I can skip through the normal "click the folder you want to index" type of answers, it's way beyond that. Let me give some background first. This is a new installation of Vista x64 Ultimate on this machine. I just installed it a little over a week ago after I got a blue screen of death that wouldn't allow any type of system restore, etc on the prior install. My prior installation on that machine was a Vista Ultimate x32 bit. The prior installation had the OS on the C: drive and I had moved "My Documents" out of a Windows XP onto the D: drive (D:My DOcuments).

In that prior installation, I left all Music, Videos, documents etc. under the original layout and just pointed the Vista "music", "documents", etc folders to the sub folders. I had no problem indexing on my prior version. I have a Vista 64 bit Ultimate at work as well and IT has no problem indexing even under the default locations..........

Variations Of Aero, Customize?

Apr 3, 2008

There are many themes for Windows XP Luna interface. Windows Vista, however, has only one version of Aero ( we can change the color and its intensity though). Is it possible to make other themes for Aero, like different system button styles or different border, different material, etc. Or, is it impossible to customize it by its architecture? I'm not going to make a custom theme, but am just curious about it. PS : Personally, I like Aero better than Mac OSX's look and feel, except for fonts and menus. I like OSX's larger fonts and translucent menu better.

Easily Customize Screensavers

Dec 30, 2008

About a year about I posted a detailed article about customizing the new screensavers in Windows Vista that are also included in Windows 7. Since then a Windows developer known as Onmicoder has taken the tweaks a step further and built a GUI around the registry values. Now users that don’t want to modify the registry manually can customize screensavers with just a few clicks.

You can download the utility on NeoWin’s forums here. Once downloaded make sure you run the utility as administrator. It modifies portions of the registry that require administrative rights to make changes.

Customize Command Prompt

Nov 5, 2007

For power users Command Prompt is where you go to get work done quickly and efficiently. If you spend a lot of time using Command Prompt, why not customize the appearance and operation to your preferences? There are actually a few Command Prompt customizations that will make it more useful and good looking.

Just follow these steps to customize your Command Prompt:

Click on the Start Button and key in Command Prompt and hit Enter.

Once Command Prompt has started, right click on the top left icon in the menu bar and select Defaults. Alternatively you can select Properties if you want to have different settings for different Command Prompt shortcuts.

You will now see the four tabs of options to customize. The sections that I always work with are Font, Layout and Colors. To get started, click on the Font tab. Here you will be able to change the font and size used. If you would like a micro prompt as shown below, select Raster Fonts and size 4x6.

On the Layout tab you can specify the size and location of the window as well as the buffer. I usually only change the Screen Buffer Height setting.  This controls how many previous command lines are saved and can be scrolled back up through.  Increasing this value is useful if you are looking at a  large directory with more than 300 files. I always increase the Height value to the max which is 9999.
The Color tab is where you get to have the most fun changing the look of your Command Prompt. Just select what you want to change the color for and then change the color.

Back on the Options tab I recommend turning on Quick Edit Mode.  This allows you to easily highlight text without having to go to Edit -> Mark and copy it by just right clicking.  Then you can paste it by simply right clicking once more....

Customize Installation, GUI Image Manager

Mar 26, 2008

i have a legal vista ultimate license unused on any machine and NOT OEM. i would like to install vista ultimate 64 on a new laptop. it came preinstalled with home premium 32 (the T7500 processor so it can take 64bit) i would like to create a custom install disk containing the OS and the HP vista 64 drivers. I would also like if possible to include some of the pre installed bloatware (I know, I know, I dont want MS works or norton, but I would not mind the HP help system and the system monitors and system update etc).

I have created a recovery disk which contains 6 or 7 .wim files each about the size of a CD. I presume the windows (home premium) as well as all the bloatware and drivers are included in these image files. I installed the WAIK and tried to use to GUI image manager (or whatever it is called) to mount the files but could not. I was able to dir using imageX command line, but was unable to mount the image file or files using imagex /mount rw if i could somehow accomplish this maybe i could build a custom image file with the ultimate 64 and drivers and etc/ I guess an alternative is to use vlite, and HP vista 64 drivers that I download

Customize Backup With Home Premium Edition?

May 18, 2008

I am using Windows Vista Home Premium and am encountering a problem using Microsoft's own Automatic Backup. I have been using running backups weekly now for many months with no problems. Except for the initial full backup, this weekly backup has only taken approx. 20-30% of a DVD. However, since I have fully installed "The Orange Box," my weekly backup now takes 2 full DVD's.

Even though, backup does NOT backup any temp files & does NOT back up programs, I am forced to do such a big backup because this gaming software does constant updates whenever I go online. I don't want or need to backup these game settings and updates, but I can't see any way to tell my backup software to ignore these files. The only solution I have for now is to disable automatic backups.
