How Do I Move Mail, Folders, Etc To New Computer?
Apr 18, 2008I use Windows Live Mail. How do I move my mail and folders from my old computer to my new computer? I thought it would be as simple as signing in on my new computer, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

Jun 18, 2008I can't move files(or folders) from one folder to another. I can delete, rename, create, and edit files, but I cannot move them. i.e. I select a file, ctrl x or c or right click and copy or cut, then change directory and paste it, and windows beeps at me and no pasting is done. Drag and drop doesn't work either, as it is the same concept. Now, if I move a file via command prompt as administrator, the file can be moved between directories, but frankly, I don't want to be typing out file names all of the time. My User Account is listed as Administrator when I check via control panel.
I can copy/paste text, so the clipboard is working. The read only box is checked on the folders but as I understand it, that's normal? I am listed as the owner of the files and I have "full control" over them. This problem is persistent throughout my entire computer, including all drives, and even USB flash drives. I have tried booting with the windows cd and repairing the installation.
The problem began because of me trying to tweak my computer using a tutorial. I'm guessing the cause was either disabling UAC or executing the "Net user administrator activate:yes" command in command prompt (probably the latter). I undid all changes I made to try to fix theproblem
Rename Or Move Select Folders
Apr 19, 2009Running Vista32 Home Prem, SP1. I run as administrator. I do NOT use any registry cleaners. I am not able to rename or move select folders. Even though they have been shared (as described below), the renaming and moving attempts have been only from the computer and account that initially created them. Have a folder (with many sub-folders) that I have been sharing without problem across my home network (don't know if the sharing is related to the renaming issue). A few weeks ago I found that the root shared folder and one of its sub-folders could not be renamed or moved, though I can still rename sub-sub-folders and create and modify files contained in any. I don't know if this is a recent development; it may be that that was the first time I felt the need to rename of more them.
I applied the "Take Ownership" merge from this forum to add take ownership to the context menu. I then applied the 'take ownership' at the root of the share. Even though the command window showed activity (and I could see 'success' or 'successful' repeatedly), afterward I still was not able to rename the root share or that one sub-folder. I then did 'take ownership' again for just the sub-folder; again the command window showed activity, but afterward still could not rename the sub-folder. And just to repeat, I was and am still ABLE to rename the sub-sub-folder. Thinking that maybe the network sharing was impacting this, I then removed the share capability AND the security settings from the shared root. Repeated take ownership; but no change. I then downloaded from this forum the "Fix_Rename_32_Bit_ Vista" registry merge and applied it. Tried again to rename the root share and the its sub-folder; again failed.
Pdf Attachments, Move Or Delete The Mail Windows Mail Hangs
May 14, 2010For the last couple of weeks when I receive mail with attached pdf files, if I try to move or delete the mail Windows Mail hangs. Sometime it recovers but otherwise I need to kill it. I can open the attachment by clicking on the paper clip etc and everything seems fine so I don't think it's a security thing.

I did not delete them and can't find information related to saved folders or options related to saving email messages. Sending/receiving emails works fine and since the files were stored for many months without an issue, I have to conclude it is a problem with Windows Mail. Dec 28, 2009I'm using Windows Mail that is "connected" to my Verizon account. Months ago I created subfolders to archive older emails. I diligently moved them into this folder. I also created another subfolder under the archived folder as well. I've had what I can only call "mysterious" issues where e-mails appear and them moments later, they are gone from my inbox. I thought I had the issue (simplistically) solved by diligently moving new items into the archive folder immediately.
Now (12/26/09) those subfolders are gone. They are not under any other folder in Windoes Mail. What is very odd (and there's quite a lot) is that I did find a lot of them now back in my Inbox but not all. The archived folders I created were under the Inbox folder as a subfolder. I don't think this has anything to do with views.

Feb 6, 2009This is the third time now my mail has had problems. I am at the moment attempting to get Microsoft help but that seems to be taking forever. 2 times previous to this I have logged into my Windows Mail and found that they have had to retrieve all my mail folders as they got "lost" somehow. Now I log in yesterday morning to check on some e-mails that I have saved in a folder titled "Job Searches" and all of the e-mails in there are there in title only but have no content. Another folder same thing basically except that every e-mail content is the same. I'm baffled.

When I create a subfolder however, and start dragging emails into the subfolder I find that the 1st email is fine but every subsequent one has been corrupted. That is to say that in each case the email content is erased and replaced with a duplication of the 1st email in that subfolder. Go figure. Feb 15, 2009I've moved from Outlook Express on my XP desktop to Windows mail on my Vista laptop. I plan on moving to Outlook on both computers, but not until I get this folder thing straightened out. I was able to import my OE mail into Windows Mail ok. Then I had a hard drive failure on my laptop. I had backed up my mail files and I was able to restore my Windows Mail ok.
I had several "Recovered Folders", but they included everything. I moved all of my folders out of the recovered folders and placed them once more under the Inbox. Then I deleted the empty recovered folders.
Now I want to backup my mail, not using the Vista backup, but with a third party. So when I go into my Windows Mail folder in Windows Explorer, I find all of the "recovered folders" are still there. Now they're listed as Local Folders. I can't find the configuration of my folders as I see them in Windows mail at all. I have a "Backup" folder with a "new" folder inside of it with a windows file that is unopenable.
