"Somewhere in California - At 8:30 PDT with the release of Snoopy Linux 2.1 and Goober Linux 1.0, the number of Linux distributions finally surpassed the number of actual Linux users." "We've been expecting it for some time," Merrill Lynch technology analyst Tom Shayes said, "but this is a little sooner than most expected. We've seen explosive growth in the number of Linux distributions, in fact my nephew just put out LittleLinux Chart Tommy Linux 1.1 last week."

I'm new here and to Vista. I purchased my wife a new Toshiba Laptop for Mothers Day and here we are w/ an error already. I've never seen this kind of error before and I'm assuming it is software related and not hardware. But everytime we turn on the computer this error box comes up. Microsoft .NET Framework Unhandled exception has occured in your application.
See the end of this message for details on invoking
just-in-time (JIT) debugging instead of this dialog box.

I've read the Help file in BGInfo - but can't figure out how to use Command Line Parameters. When I click on my startup icon, I would like to invoke certain parameters. The line I came up with is: "C:Program FilesBGInfoBgInfoBginfo.exe /timer:99 /popup /taskbar /rtf:C:DATABGINFO /nolicprompt" Obviously, this is wrong. My Target line reads: "C:Program FilesBGInfoBgInfoBginfo.exe". My Start in line reads: "C:Program FilesBGInfoBgInfo"
what, exactly, should go in each line. I would also like to add lines of information to BGInfo - but that question will come after I get the above working.

4tJHA.3988@TK2MSFTNGP05.phx.gbl> The machine is a six month old Acer Aspire 5920, running Windows Visa Home Premium, and of course there is no disc provided. Any attempt to start up either in safe mode (F8 - any option selected) Normal Windows mode, or the Acer recovery mode (Alt & F10) results in a BSOD with the following Machine Check Error message: Stop: 0x0000009C (0X00000003, 0X8304B120, 0XF2200004, 0X0B02010A)
The error first occurred after trying to install some LG mobile phone software so I assumed it was software related, but am I right in thinking that the first part of the error message indicates a hardware problem? If it is OS software related I would have to get hold of a Vista disk from somewhere to attempt a repair (as I can't even get to the stage where I can try to remove the offending program), but if it is telling me about a hardware failure I'd rather just pack it up and send it off to Acer.

I've got a Dell D830 with Vista Ultimate 32-bit pre-installed. It's got the max 4GB of RAM installed. I do not yet own any software or hardware which claims it can benefit from 64-bit so what are the advantages? I will not be doing any gaming but I will be doing a lot of batch processing of camera RAW files with Photoshop CS3. The guys in the Photoshop forum said there is no benefit really unless I was able to load more RAM.

I had lot of issues while installing the Vista x64 Operating System and after a long research, I was able to locate the issue. i.e. I had to disable "Core Multi-Processing" from the BIOS while installing the Operating System. However after successfully installing the Vista Operating System and all the latest services packs/updates when I enabled "Core Multi-Processing" from the BIOS, my system would work for few minutes and then crashes (Does not restart, but just hangs) with a Stop blue screen error stating "A Clock interrupt was not received on a secondary processor within the allocated time interval. Stop: 0x00000101". I just have 1 processor installed on the first slot of the M/B. The issue occurs even if I sit idle and do not perform anything on the computer.
If I disable "Core Multi-Processing", my system works fine with out any issues.
I have even downloaded and installed the latest BIOS updates and drivers for NIC card and sound card. I do not have any 3rd party hardware devices attached to it. I also do not have any softwares installed on the computer yet. I even tried re-installing the OS couple of time.

Ciao from Dallas! This is my first post here and though you folks all seem very pleasant and extremely well informed I hope I don't have to spend lots of time here. I would rather be enjoying my new computer rather than reading about how it works and how to get it to work, if you know what I mean. My computer uses are very limited by most standards (internet, email and some word processing for the most part with simple audio/video and photo work occasionally) so I prefer stuff that allows me to easily and repeatably get the job done with a minimum of fuss and struggle. With that here's the short story and the questions.
Lucky me, I had to replace my eight year old computer last week. Big change smacking me in the face! Even the new keyboard is taking some getting used to. I had no idea, nor did the salesperson mention, there were multiple versions of Vista to contend with until I began re-installing software I had used for years. Not everything likes 64bit! ...........

I have the following problem which cannot fix for a few weeks now and growing increasingly frustrated: Sending emails always generates the following message: 'some errors occurred while processing the requested tasks'. The message then stays in the outbox and the contents of message are deleted. I then need to delete the message which goes into the deleted items folder.
However, the email does actually get sent which I've verified by i) checking on send server of gmail and ii) sending/blind copying myself which comes into Windows mail inbox in the normal way. I would greatly welcome advice on how to remove the error message such that outbox messages automatically go to the sent folder rather than generating the error message and the message contents completely disappearing.
The only workaround is to bcc myself on outgoing mail so that I have a record of what I have sent from WM which then appears in the inbox with the text intact. As background, I have installed the Vista and WMutil patch and run all the checks and tabs to no avail. I have had AVG anti-virus installed for over 1 year. The problem manifests itself consistently in different countries and for both ADSL and wireless so i've discounted this as an ISP issue.

I've just built myself a new PC, nice little setup for what i paid for it, but i'm being haunted by occasional BSOD's. Happens about once a day, more if im unlucky. Been trying to pin down exactly what is causing it but im stumped...The error i get is the same every time. It comes up with SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION and the error code is STOP: 0x0000003B No file names are ever mentioned, always that same BSOD. I'm running Vista Home Premium, the 64 bit edition. Interestingly enough while i was waiting for Microsoft to mail me the 64bit version of Vista i was using my old 32bit version, and i never had this crash. I didnt have it installed for long, so i don't know if i was just lucky, or if this is something that is specific to the 64bit version of Vista.
And the rest, keyboard mouse etc which i doubt is important. 700W PSU as well which i think should be enough. It's kinda hard to reproduce the fault, it mostly happens when i'm playing games, but has also crashed randomly when doing Vista stuff, and once when reading a very long email with my PC doing literally nothing else, so not like i was taxing it... Some things i have noticed though, which is leading me to believe it might be the graphics card. When playing WoW, i have had it crash multiple times at certain specific points. After being killed and releasing my corpse, soon as i hit the button to pop to ghost it's crashed and burned, and also i seem to have it happen a lot when i exit the game, either from in the game itself or logging out and exiting from the main menu. But then it's also been known to just crash at seemingly random points. Thought it could be dodgy ram, so i've done a full memory test, using the windows one and also memtest86 i think its called. Left my PC on overnight with it running, woke up and no errors at all. Using the latest drivers for everything thats in it, tried using beta drivers as well for the graphics card but it didnt help so i uninstalled and went back to the normal driver.

I'd appreciate some guidance on this problem, running Vista Home Basic and I've had no problem with this 149Gb external HDD drive except when I tried to format it. It did delete everything but then says "Cannot format this drive" when I try other methods like defragmenting it or checking for error it keeps saying Windows does not recognise this something about wrong parameters. I tried Restore but no go,also nothing in the Device manager all is well with it.
After 3 days I tried to format it again and it worked, loaded some files on to it but then wanted them deleted so I formatted it and this has started all over again. It's just a spare HDD drive but I'd like to know why.

I am having a problem with my Windows Mail. I have had to do a restore using the Packard Bell restore feature on the advice of my tech guy and have encountered a problem. Prior to the restore everything worked fine.
The problem is in the send/receiving of mail. When I press the Send/Receive button the Windows Mail dialogue box (showing the error tab) comes up a tells me;
Some errors occurred while processing the requested tasks. Please review the list of errors below for more details?
No errors are showing and at the bottom of the box it shows ?0 of 3 tasks completed successfully?.
At the bottom right hand corner of my screen it shows the number of the last messages received. I can still send messages if I go to; Tools, Send and Receive and Send.
On starting up my PC and Windows Mail, mail is received and sent in the normal way but when I try Send/Receive any time after that the problem occurs.
I have checked my ISP mailbox and there are no outstanding messages.
I have checked all my setting against my laptop and they match, I have three e-mail addresses and am operating Windows Vista Premium, all updates are downloaded automatically.

i have recently bought a Toshiba L500 (Australian model) and played for awhile and have realised the number 1 keys is hard to push, so when i press it down mutiple 11111111111111111111 appear and becomes stuck and when i un-jig it, it stops and pushing down is harder than the surrounding numeric numbers so it definitely indicates something is wrong. (top row of numbers) can it be fixed at a service center or go back and get a new 1, or are there other options?

I have been using my PC for a few months, and it needed to get sent in to a techie a week or so ago who swapped around some hardware trying to fix a problem. After it came back, but before I turned it on, I installed a new RAM stick. When I turn it on it needs to be activated straight away. Sure, I thought, major hardware change, I will just activate it again, like I phone activated before. But I can't activate. When I try and get it to phone activate, the screen comes up with the number to ring, and a space to type in my 'confirmation ID' given to me by the phone service. But to get my 'Confirmation ID' I need to give an 'Installation ID to the phone service, and I don't have an 'Installation ID'. I cannot activate by internet either, My PC doesn't have internet access. I put in a dial up modem, but whenever I try to set up an internet connection, I just get cryptic errors. I should add that I can't do anything on the PC in the meantime, every time I start up I just get this problem.

Just obtained new Owner Version of Ultimate (32 and 64). It says 3 different installs allowed. I wish to use it on 2 hard drives in same computer, one 64 bit, one 32 bit for testing our AutoCAD Addin Sofware. Will likely re-do the current 64 install (done by this owned package) to 32 (as 64 is on the new & larger drive, a mistake on my part), then install 64 again, but on smaller hard drive. This has me concerned as to how MS views the number of installs (limitted number), especially as within the same computer, same basic configuration.
1. Will I soon run out of my allowed installs, or will they be considered as just one as is on same machine??
2. Does MS have any problem with 2 installs active on one computer (separate hard drives)?

I noticed that my 280GB hard disk is seemingly suddenly down to 20GB. I see that my used shadow storage space is 86GB and the allocated shadow space is 88GB and the max shadow space is "unbounded." I have the commands to resize the max space, but I don't know what to resize it to. I know I have about 150GB of programs, files, etc on my c: drive. Can you advise? Is it possible to determine the actual number of restore points that are kept and then simply decrease that number? It would seem that with most problems you wouldn't necessarily want to go back more than 3 or 4 points, would you? I just don't know how the shadow size corresponds to the number of restore points that are kept. 80+ GB just seems completely unreasonable! Incidentally, I also have a recovery drive, presumably created by the computer mfgr (Dell) with 15GB total, and 5GB free.

BIOS setting demystified
I find that when it comes to people building their own PCs (or tweaking their existing rig) then the mysteries that lay within the BIOS settings are scarier to most people than anything hardware related. Let’s do something about that!
I can see why the myriad of BIOS settings instill part excitement and part fear in many people. After all, it’s almost impossible to connect two bits of hardware together in the wrong way, and hard to break anything unless you are being particularly clumsy or using hulk-like strength to force incompatible parts together. But when it comes to the BIOS settings, it seems like there are an infinite number of settings that can be fiddled with, and each of the individual settings seems to have dozens of possible values.........

I have this problem with Vista64. After every updates from M$ I get this error: The file /windows/system32/hall.dll is broken and the error number 0xc00000e9. If I am a standard user I would have no chance to recover it. Sometimes it helps to put the install dvd in the drive and wait what happens. But sometimes I must recover this file directly from DVD with another computer and copy it to my system. Finally after approx. 2 hours of playing my system alives, but with the fear what the future brings. Has anybody same problem? If yes how do you solve it?
