Controlling Permissions For User Accounts

Aug 7, 2009

I want to create isolated zones for users in my computer. I use Vista Home Premium 32 bit, what I really want to do is to create a user account that neither the user of the account nor the other users can interfere with each other business (like viewing other users documents, using programs). I'm not asking for exact steps for this issue, I would be very happy if you can just give me a detailed guide's web page link.

Admin To Control User Access Permissions

Sep 20, 2008

I am new user to the Windows Vista Home premium. My laptop is being shared with some family children. I given them the Standard User Account and applied various security policies regarding their computer usage.

1. How can I restrict a Standard User from using Removable Media like CD, DVD, USB.

2. How can I disable "Delete Browsing History" or "Internet Options" for the internet explorer for a standard user.

I have searched on net but nothing fruitful can be done even on changing Registry.

Unable To Edit HTML File

Oct 5, 2009

I have a really strange problem on my VISTA home premium PC. I have a number of HTML files stored in documents folder, but when I try to edit the HTML file in notepad I get the following error message: Cannot create the file. Make sure that the path and file name are correct.

File and path are correct because I just opened it from the documents folder. What makes it strange is that if I change the extension from HTML to TXT I can edit and save without any issue, but once I change back to HTML I lose the ability to save any edits. Also, if I copy the HTML file to another folder such as desktop or C: root, I can edit without any issues. I've checked the properties of the folder and file and haven't found anything out of the ordinary. Searched the MS KB and haven't turned up anything.

Edit And Alter File Associations,

Sep 14, 2009

Is there a way in Windows Vista (Ultimate, SP2) that I can edit and alter file associations other than the method outlined in the Help file (which is to right-click on a file, then click on Open With ...)? I'm having network troubles, so I reboot my router and my Windows, just to make sure everything is clean.

During startup, a file opens on my desktop in in TextPad (a utility that I have installed since December, but have not used or made changes to in recent months). This file is in C:UsersMikeAppData LocalTemp and is named nos_uninstall_Adobe.bat......

Cannot Delete File Effective Permissions

Mar 28, 2008

Occasionally Vista and its permission handling really drives me nuts: I needed to replace a certain .exe file in a subdirectory of "C:Program Files" but for some, to me unexplainable, reason Vista at first did not let me delete the old version.

The file was owned by "Administrators" of which I am a member. When I checked "Effective Permissions" of that file for my user-id I had ALL necessary permissions (including "Full Control", "Delete" and "Take Ownership"). However, if I tried to delete the file or take ownership, then I got errors that I don't have the necessary permission. Only after I added my user-id explicitly to the file's permission list and gave me "Full Control" , then I was able to delete the file. Why was it not enough that I am of user type "Administrator" and also member of the "Administrators"-group?

Permissions: File Management Newsgroup

Jun 6, 2009

two separate, but inter-related stories.

1. A few months ago we had a visitor stay from Europe (I am in Perth, Australia) so I decided to 'hide' my files (kept on a separate D drive) so that IF he wanted to use my PC he wouldn't see them.

2. Almost at the same time I decided to partition my C drive into 2 separate drives (creating a drive I named "W", and installed Windows 7 onto W. That left me with a C drive (Vista), a D Drive (files and I-tunes) and W drive (Win 7)...............

Missing The Old File, Edit, View Menu Bar?

Aug 1, 2005

One of the main concepts of Windows Vista is to make things more simple, basically take some of the complexity out of Windows. The decision was made to do away with the old menu bar in many of the windows of Windows Vista because they simply looked too busy and offered the user too many, often confusing, choices.

This all sounds great but we are power users and most of us like complexity because it gives us more control. Thankfully, Microsoft didn't really do away with it completely, they just hid it. The next time you are using Windows Vista and wish that old menu bar was still around, just hit ALT on your keyboard and it magically appear!

Cannot Create File Navigonavigon Freshsetting User.xml

May 23, 2008

I am running Vista Home Premium on an Acer stationary Aspire M3100. All running well except for one problem. I as a user can not install two specific programms. My wife and another user on the PC got the programms when I installed them, but I (admin.) cannot get them working. One is a programm for my Navigon GPS called NavigonFresh. I get two error messages: "Unable to create directory" and: "Cannot create file navigonavigon freshsettingsuser.xml". But as mentioned above the two other users on the machine have no problems!

The other one is my EPSON perfection scanner 1250. I installed it on the PC, but I can not use/open the programm - but the two other users on the machine have no problems! These are the only two programms on the PC giving me troubles. I tried to uninstall and reinstall but with same negative results. (I tried asking on my Danish newsgroup but negative).

Permissions

Oct 20, 2009

When I try to run QuickTime I get an Error -2095 alert. When I click Run As Administrator it opens OK.I am the owner and sole user of the computer. How do a give full permissions to myself?I tried going to the program file, opening properties and then the Permissions tab. There are 3 entries in the top window:

SYSTEM
Administrator (EUSTACE PCAdminstrators)
Users (EUSTACE PCUsers)

When I click the last, in the lower window I see checked only Read & Execute and Read, not Full control and the others.

I clicked Edit, and added checkmarks to everything (except Special Permissions that I can't).

I click OK and return to the former dialog, but the permissions for Users have not changed.

When I click Advanced I see 4 lines. Lines 2 and 3 are System and Administrator. Lines 1 and 4 are:

Allow Users (EUSTACE PCUsers) Full Control
Allow Users (EUSTACE PCUsers) Read & Execute C:Program Files

Is the second line necessary?

If I highlight it and click Edit and then highlight it again and click Edit, check Full control, OK, the dialog closes and in the first dialog the line 1 is highlighted and line 4 is the same.

Permissions, UAC Off

Apr 22, 2009

it seems that I have managed to lock myself into a corner here and I am hoping some of you gents can pull me out w/o loosing any body limbs. I have a very special folder, within that folder I have a few files and, until recently, they were working. I decided to try a script to hide the folder so nobody could get to it. After a new build, the script did not work anymore so I decide not to bother with it anymore. the problem is that now that I want to move the folder to my external passport drive, I am getting the following 2 permission pop ups and I can't, for the life of me, make this happen.

I have tried turning the UAC off, tried elevating myself to the highest, I have taken ownership of the folder and the Drive where the folder resides, I have also given me full access of the folder and the files and still, I am getting the dreaded errors. Before attempting to open my case and take the drive out to be used as an external usb/sata drive on my XP laptop in hopes that this will allow me to get it (I am thinking it won't).

Scared To Edit Registry!!

May 30, 2010

I once had software called Winamp installed. I no longer wanted it so went
through the proper uninstall process and it all went smoothly. However now
when I boot up and log into Vista I get a little error message saying
there's a problem with winamp and that I should re-install to rectify it!
it has an OK button that gets rid of the message. It's not causing any
problems but it's beginning to annoy me!

I have tried CCleaner to clean up the registry and it did find many
references to winamp and it cleaned it all up but despite that the darned
message persists! I had a look in regedit and clicked to find instances of
winamp and there are lots of keys. I was very tempted to just delete them
all.

Overriding Permissions

Jan 1, 2009

I've got a program that starts up when the computer does, or so I've told Vista a thousand times. It still blocks it every time I reboot the computer. How can I set a permission for the thing to run all the time? I can't seem to find where to do that either... I can find my way to the window that shows what's permitted and what's not, but I can't edit them. I'm logged in as an administrator, so I should be able to, but Vista's being overly protective (really, I have a mother for that ). Why is it doing this to me?

Deletion Permissions

Aug 1, 2009

I'm in the habit of deleting everything that goes into my downloads folder within my user folder because having a bunch of installers sitting there is pointless. Recently, however, whenever I attempt to delete any of these installers within my downloads folder,it tells me that "I need to permission to perform this action." These files can't be in use by anything and as administrator I don't see why it suddenly will not allow me to delete this things after I've been doing it for months. If I restart the computer,it WILL let me delete these things. But never before that.
