I have a totally top of the range laptop, I am not running any of the things like Norton that are known to cause performance problems (I use AVG anti-virus). I have heaps of RAM and disk-space, a fast Intel Core2 Duo chip, yet my computer is slower than my previous seven year old one (that was running XP). It takes about 3 seconds to display things like the Windows Explorer window or about 6 or 7 seconds to bring up Firefox or IE. and about 10 or 11 seconds the first time I open Outlook. That is not taking into account the
time it takes to download the web page or retieve my mail. I am using the default settings in Vista, are there features in Vista (I know it monitors everything) that could be slowing me down this much?
When I list the dates associated with a file, I cannot get the seconds displayed. If I display 'properties' the seconds show so I assume I have the format set properly. How can I display seconds in the Details view?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI use vista basic, I've recently had my computer took right back to factory settings as I've been havingso many problems with my lap top, then the registry was sorted out, I know I've not got any virus on the lap top, each time my computer is turned on, I'm told that defender is switched off and I've got to turn it on, I've even tried to start scanning, to see if that would stop it, but it still happens ...
View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm really at the end of my tether with this issue - have a laptop which has windows Vista installed. Whenever I boot up the Windows Firewall is turned on. However, towards the end of the boot process, the Windows Firewall turns itself off, almost as if when a program loads it knocks it out. Is there anyway I can do a walk thru' of the boot up process so I can see if I can capture which program or process is doing it? At my wits end.

My computer scores 5.9 across the board (except 5.7 in cpu and hard drive...) in Vista Experince so I should be able to handle everything Vista throws at me. My problem is that Vista turns off the Min/Max animation occasionally and I have no idea why. I can go back in to performance>visual effects and see that its still checked. Clicking apply again will restore the animations.

Also, when GRUB boot loader gives me the OS Choices, how can I set "Windows" as default? Right now, SLED is default.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI just bought a Dell studio XPS 1640 about a week ago. It ran perfectly until 2 days ago. Now when I turn on the computer it takes forever. When it finally gets running the HDD light on the case is always on and it runs very slowly. If the computer has been on for several hours the light turns off and it runs fine. But when I restart it does the same thing over again. I thought it might be indexing or something along those lines but didnt know how to find out.
View 4 Replies View RelatedFor about 1-2 years my computer ran fine until recently. Now, whenever I start up my computer it boots all the way to the Vista loading screen, seems as if it loads all the way, then shuts down with no warning. This happens at the same point every time. I tried putting in the Vista DVD and starting that up in an attempt to reinstall or repair Vista, but I get the same results on the same loading screen. The computer is custom built by myself.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI can put the pc to sleep with either the sleep button on the keyboard or the on-screen sleep button but when the pc goes to sleep the keyboard and mouse USB connections go to sleep too. leaving me with no way to wake up the pc! I have tried using Vista 64's built in drivers for the mouse & keyboard and also tried downloading and installing the Microsoft software for the keyboard & mouse. Same problem. the light on the keyboard and mouse both turn off when sleep is utilized. I've tried changing the settings in the Power Options to enable the power button on the pc to turn on sleep instead of shut down. It does put the pc to sleep but when I try to wake the pc from sleep with the power button the pc acts like it was completely shutdown and tries to do a full boot which then results in the windows screen saying it didn't shut down right, "start normally"?
The pc then starts as normal but how do fix the sleep problem? I have no problem with another pc with Vista Ultimate and 2 other pcs with MCE2005 and the sleep status. The problem pc has all the latest Window updates, current bios, latest ATI 64 bit drivers for the graphics card. One possibility might be that the graphics card is designed for the new PCIe 2.0 but the board is the older PCIe standard. The graphics card is supposed to be "backwards compatible" with older PCIe slots but now I wonder if that could be the problem?
my processor is a core 2 duo E4600 @ 2.4Ghz.The problem is that sometimes when i switch my pc on the beeping overheat sound comes and my pc turns off. sometimes when i do manage to turn it on, i use coretemp and speedfan for the temp. reading and in the beginning it reads at 83 degrees celcius! then it cools down and the temp. remains betwwen 65c - 70c. yesterday the nomal temp was between 40c-45c. the sudden increase in its normal temp scared me. this increase happenned after i cleaned and dusted the insides of my pc. while dusting it i didnt do anything near the processor. i have 3 8mm fans in the pc. 1 blowing on the processor and 2 sucking air out-one from the back and one at the side.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI noticed that recently the little speaker icon for the Realtek HD Audio Manager (on the taskbar next to the clock) seems to completely disappear at times. One minute it's there, and then Poof! it's gone. It started a few weeks ago. I would restart the computer, and it would be back, but then later disappear. (I checked everything I could think of, enabling the notification, checking all the boxes in the control panel and in the realtek control panel, making sure it wasn't a "hidden" icon, etc.)
Now it's back, but instead of being white, it's red. I used to be able to right-click on it and the volume slider would appear and I could adjust the volume easily. Now when I right-click on the red icon, I get a list--> Sound Manager, Audio Devices, System Sound Events, etc. but no volume slider like before.
The sound itself works fine--no problem with the speakers--but I just can't figure out what has caused the problem with the icon disappearing and now re-appearing but with a red color.
Any ideas? I just want my volume slider back!

My Vista Ultimate-SP1 PC continuously freezes for a few seconds, it freezes then I hear a "click" noise coming from my hard drives and it works again for a while...after a couple of minutes or even less it happens again.. I have all the Vista updates and all my software and drivers up to date, I have already unsuccessfully tried everything and I' don't know how to solve this. I have not reformatted to reinstall Vista, as I learnt searching Google that other Vista users are suffering an identical problem even after several clean Vista Installs.

(Laptop since upgraded to WINDOWS 7) In the laptop, which is a wireless connection to the internet, WINDOWS 7 UPGRADE ADVISOR, & Secunia PSI will properly connect to the internet, and scan the machine for out of date software. No problems. (IE8 is the default browser)
However, in my desktop, hard wired to my home network router, Secunia will not connect. Nor will the WINDOWS 7 Upgrade Advisor. I set the rules in IE8 to allow the connection, but all I get is the barber pole saying it could take up to 10 seconds to connect, but it never does. I also set the firewall to allow this connection, in both directions. I have uninstalled, and reinstalled the program, to no avail. Same issue......
I'm using a home premium on a lenovo 3000 k series 100 with a intel 2 Quad CPU. And recently, when I set it to sleep, or it goes in sleep it self, it will wake up like 30 seconds right after the sleep, even at the night! I'm so frustrated with it.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have just bulit myself a new Pc and have discovered quite possibly the most rustrating issue i have ever come across trying to fix. This problem is very inconsistant and happens randomly, My pc will hang about every 5 seconds for about a second, when i say hang i mean both video and sound lockup then return to normal. when trying to navigate around on the net via google for answers this makes things difficult. I have done some deeper digging and found a svchost.exe chewing up about 100 mb of RAM but am not sure if this is the source of my problem. One other thing i use is a DLink Wireless Lan adapter via USB.
View 4 Replies View Relatedim installing AvP 3 and i just cant do it.
apparently for some reason the dvd stops reading...
when i enter "my computer" and try to go into drive d(my dvd) it just crashes,
then i have to wait from a range of 5 mins to 1.5 hours for windows explorer to restart...
and the game installation crashes too...
that happens with other dvds and cds too.
i have changed various dvd drives from various companies and i have updated all of their drivers...the problem is consistent.
im tired of buying new dvd drives and throwing them away for nothing.
obviously its a vista issue cause on my old pc everything works just fine(i have xp on that one).
most of the games i just copy the dvds files on my portable harddrive using my old pc and then do the installations through that harddrive on my current pc...
but this game is a "steam" game and that wont work...
any ideas?
ps:its not a hardware issue, its definately a windows vista issue.
So whenever I turn on the system, after I run a few light aplications, like Internet Explorer or PC Wizard for example, the screen turns dark for 2 seconds, and the error message: "igfx display driver has stopped responding and was successfully recovered" pops up. This may happen once every 30 minutes or even around 5 times in 20 Seconds, resulting in a blue screen of death. The latest driver which is currently installed for the Intel chipset is 15.13.6.64.1908 (7.15.10.1908) which seems to be causing the problems. This driver is also unsigned by microsoft, but is the most current driver to date (pcd5srvc_x64.pkms, igfxcoin_v1908.dll, and igdkmd64.sys comes up as unsigned in sigverif.exe). I uninstall this driver through Hardware Manager, but the current driver then goes down to (6.0.6001.18000). Even though this old driver is stable, my resolution is horrible and websites with picture intensive pages lag and flash like crazy. I've been searching the internet all night with this problem, and this is my last resort for an answer. I don't know what else to do. I can't even find a lower driver version for this chipset on Intel's support page.

When the bug hits, it turns off the shell extension on AVG, disables all the shortcuts on my desktop. It also disable the shut down option arrow from the start menu. Either my connection seems normal or the link up then down alternating for hours. I'm running Vista 32 Using either my speedtouch 536v6 or Belkin G wireless router to access. Problem occurs with either. Have used filtered dsl line or not. Problem occurs with either. Have shut my comp. off. Problem occurs with either. ISP have visited twice, check the line, shrugged their shoulders and closed the ticket. And worse of all not consistent, so it's hard to locate the problem. It connection will work fine for an hour (like right now) then just stop working. I have reset both modem, reset user setting, obtained new ip, etc, etc.
