Backup Tool Include Specified Folders?
Jun 18, 2008
Can Vista Backup tool include folders that I specify, or is it just the basic tickbox choices?
Info: I want to specify a folder and back that up each night. Vista Automatic Backup only lists which hard drive I can include, and then asks for which device I backup to, then which files types (photos, movies etc). There doesn't appear to be an "advanced" option, which lets me click on each folder and put a X for it to be backed up. Would choosing "other" give me access to the folder view? It's backing up right now and I don't want to cancel because it's taking a while to do the backup.

I just accidently lost a JSP file (it's a type of file, eg., somefile.jsp) and went to Backup and Restore to recover the file. Much to my shock and horror, it looks like no JSP files were backed up, even though I have all checkboxes checked in the Backup configuration and have regularly run backup. How do I get the Backup and Restore program to backup all files types? If Backup and Restore can't do it, is there something I can load (eg., maybe the old XP Pro backup) from Microsoft?

Two of the biggest criticisms of WSR, Windows Speech Recognition built into the Vista and soon to be released Windows 7 operating system were:
1. No easy method to transfer, backup and restore one's user training profile.
2. No way to keyboard corrections into the Alternates Panel, the corrections box of alternate choices for words that were misrecognized.
We're now pleased to announce the WSR team at Microsoft has released an easy to use transfer, backup and restore tool. Rob Chambers of Microsoft's Speech team suggests: "Be sure to download the release notes as they contain useful information as well as user instructions. Please note that this is a "technical preview" version and as such there are a few known issues with the tool."

I've moved from Outlook Express on my XP desktop to Windows mail on my Vista laptop. I plan on moving to Outlook on both computers, but not until I get this folder thing straightened out. I was able to import my OE mail into Windows Mail ok. Then I had a hard drive failure on my laptop. I had backed up my mail files and I was able to restore my Windows Mail ok.
I had several "Recovered Folders", but they included everything. I moved all of my folders out of the recovered folders and placed them once more under the Inbox. Then I deleted the empty recovered folders.
Now I want to backup my mail, not using the Vista backup, but with a third party. So when I go into my Windows Mail folder in Windows Explorer, I find all of the "recovered folders" are still there. Now they're listed as Local Folders. I can't find the configuration of my folders as I see them in Windows mail at all. I have a "Backup" folder with a "new" folder inside of it with a windows file that is unopenable.

I have a new Vista machine and am transferring personal information from the older XP. finding the appropriate folders to include in Roxio backups on the Vista machine. I need to avoid losing documents, photos, Favorites, e-mail addresses, and e-mail messages in the case of an HD disaster. (I have no music files.) I obviously need to backup Documents and Pictures. But what folders are the locations of the other personal information?

I have two user accounts on my computer. My administrator account that I very rarely ever use, and my normal, general user account I named "Bob1". I use Vista Windows Mail as my email application. I just searched and found the "hidden" folder where my Windows Mail stuff is (C:UsersBob1AppDataLocalMicrosoftWindows Mail Local Folders & Microsoft Communities & Compact & Backup) I save everything to my Bob1 user account to the appropriate folder (Documents in documents folder, pictures into pictures folder, etc.) I never vary from this habit.
I have been backing up using Vista32 backup. It gives me the option to backup "Pictures, Music, Videos, E-mail, Document, TV-shows, Compressed files, Additional files". I check all of these options so all are backed up. It comes on automatically every day to backup anything new or changed.
I checked the restore part of vista32 backup & restore found in control panel. I looked up Bob1 and all my folders are there. It appeared the application data folders were there (difficult to find because the application data folders are hidden). I specifically checked the Windows Mail folders in the hidden application data folders and they were there. It appeasers everything is backed up.........

I purchased an HP Pavilions laptop, with Vista Home Premium SP1, 3-4 months ago. There were about 35-40 security patches waiting for download and installation. I haven't gotten around to installing all of them yet. Does SP2 include all of those patches?

This is probably small to most people and maybe many prefer it now, but when manually renaming a file the extension is not highlighted forcing me to have to perform a second manual operation to highlight the whole filename. It is the 'rename' function but I use it to copy and paste the entire file name. Like I said it is probably a minor thing to most, but I do this many, many times a day so if there was anyway to have this function behave like it did in all previous Windows versions I would like to know how to do that.

Ours is a home computer that is used by my wife and myself. Together we receive less than 20 e-mail messages per day. I notice that Windows 7 does not include any e-mail program at all, so I was wondering about the future of Windows Mail. Even Windows Live Mail is complicated for us "Old Timers". I guess I would like to see Windows Mail go on forever.

He's been spending a fair amount of time trading emails with the tech support group of a company making some software he's been trying to install since he got his laptop. They've finally identified the problem as his laptop missing two files, msvcrt.dll and msvcirt.dll, from his system32 folder. I find that *very* strange, since, as far as I can tell, all Windows versions in recent years have shipped with these files--or at least msvcrt.dll--and my thought is that there's a lot of Windows components that would be broken without it. I don't have a Vista machine or Vista discs so I can't verify this for myself, but can anyone confirm whether a *clean* Vista (32-bit) machine includes those files or not under their system32 folder?

I'm investigating a strange problem on behalf of a family member...he's got a brand new HP laptop, less than a month old, that came preloaded with Vista Home Premium (I believe--I don't have access to the laptop at this very moment). Long story short, I registered for my Windows 7 upgrade and overwritten my drive (and my restore partition) with the Windows 7 90-day trial in anticipation. problem is, it is clear that my Windows 7 upgrade kit will not be arriving and my 90-day trial is halfway done. so, I have to reinstall Vista. Unfortunately I do not have a copy of Vista because I wiped my drive and so I have to download it (TO BE ACTIVATED ON MY KEY), and I know for a fact that the generic disks for XP, Vista, and Windows 7 do not have a driver for my SATA controller. this means that I have to insert the driver onto the installation.
Since I have to insert my drive driver onto the installation media, I figure I should include drivers, and what the heck include some applications. Now, what applications do you recommend for a basic install of Windows Vista Home Premium that does not use a lot of system resources or otherwise are irrlelvent. So far I have: GO-OO: An OpenOffice clone that includes needed plugins, such as read/write docx support Microsoft Security Essentials.

BRING BACK ALL CD FOR COMPUTER , TECH SOME TIMES CANT RESTORE OR REINSTALL HARDWARE IF THE CD IS NOT HERE.BRING BACK THE MEDIA/RECOVERY CDS.RECOVERY MEDIA Most computer systems no longer include "Recovery Media" (Disks or CDs used to restore your computer system to it's factory shipped state). Many do not even include Operating System disks. This is not specific to systems purchased from any one company, but now standard practice throughout the entire industry. However, many manufacturers include software on the hard drive that creates recovery media for you. This allows burning your own set of recovery CDs or DVDs - all you need is the blank media.Inclusion of such a recovery utility varies by manufacturer and model; not all manufactures and models include such a utility. For those that include such a utility we recommend you create your own set of recovery media after completing the Windows installation. In other words, right after you startusing your PC!If you fail to do this and encounter a difficulty in the future you may not be able to properly restore your computer. Some manufacturers may have physical recovery media available separately for purchase; consult your owner???s manual support information section foradditional information. Systems that do not come with a CD/DVD burner may still include Recovery Disks - please check the manufacturer's specs. This post is a suggestion for Microsoft, and Microsoft responds to the suggestions with the most votes. It appears that Windows Media Player that comes with Vista Enterprise does not include the ability to play DVDs. When I try it says that no codec is installed. what I need to download, preferably for free, to either get WMP to play DVDs, or a free player that's not too obnoxious with ads. I tried installing the K-Lite Standard Codec pack, but either I did it wrong or it isn't enough.

I always use vista complete backup (Disk Image) to backup both my hard disks, but I am a bit confused as to the restore options. Basically, I have a sneaky suspition that one of the drives is going to fail in the near future, so I backup quite regularly, but when I replace it, I want to get a bigger drive, as it's only a 150gig raptor, and I really would prefer a 500 or 1TB 7200rpm drive for storage.
Can vista restore the files I backed up on D: (the 150gig) to a new D: which would be a large disk ? If it can, could I also do the same for C: which is where vista is located? If that doesn't work,

When I go to the users folder inside my choices are Administrator and Public and I can not find the "desktop.ini" file. I have windows vista.

Right now i'm running vista ultimate with a Q6600 and 4 gigs of ram. but i do graphics professionally and video a LOT so the memory is maxed out already. I'd like to prepare for the future with the 64 bit. i'm considering upgrading from a 32 bit to a 64 when Win7 is released later this year. with what i've researched already, i think my system should be able to handle it ok, but i was wondering if there were any kind of software tools that would check a system and advise what will NOT handle it. along the lines of the vista upgrade tool that was available.

i just got windows Vista Home Premium X64 a couple days ago and so far i have just a couple problems that i can't figure out. Well first of all i can't get the switching between windows thing to work correctly. My Girlfriend has Vista Home Premium also but she has 32 bit. But on hers the switching between windows is the live tabs of each window. And also when you hover the mouse over a minimized window on the taskbar its shows a live icon window of that window, but on mine it's just a tool tip. Another thing is i cannot change my colors of my taskbar and active windows. On my girlfriends PC when you go to the control panel and go to customize then colors it shows some different colors and it changes the taskbar as well as the windos but on mine its way different when you go to change the colors. And one last little question I have read about the Aero thing.. not sure exactly what it is.. i think its a theme right? well i don't have it under my themes list.
