I want to get a new laptop pc and don't know if I should get a 64 or 32 bit pc. What's the advantage of one over the other? I hear a lot of my programs will not work on a 64 bit machine.
View 9 RepliesI'm running Microsoft Office Groove and it is setup under Vista (Business edition) Firewall Exceptions as a Program, not a Port. To clarify, when you look at the properties of the Groove (Program) Exception, it does not mention anything about ports. I know I can add an exception specifically for Port 2492 (Groove's primary communication port), but would that be redundant if the Program Exception for Groove already opens up that specific Port.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI've had Vista Ultimate (or whatever the 64 bit version is called) installed on my computer for almost a year now. Everything has worked perfectly until fairly recently. I noticed that one of my startup programs had stopped working (SoundMax32) and was showing up as an application error. This was around the time I installed the 64 bit version of iTunes, so I figured maybe my audio settings had been changed. The computer continued to work for another 2 weeks, and then yesterday, completely out of the blue, ALL of my programs (startup and otherwise) have stopped loading and are showing the application error message.
The thing I don't get is that Vista still boots up with no problems. I thought initially that the problem was limited to my 32 bit applications, but IE 64 bit doesn't work either? I'm about 2 days from just reformatting and doing a complete reinstall. But if anyone has any answers I would be grateful.
And no, I did not install any application between the last bootup that was fine, and the one yesterday. I've run windows update and updated everything but the programs still will not load (I'm writing this from my laptop because IE and Firefox give me the same error message).
I have 3 programs identified with this problem: minesweeper, hearts, and windows media player. The first 2 give the message immediately. Media player works until I try to view a picture. The details of windows media show the following files:
C:Userss4AppDataLocalTempWER2165.tmp.version.txt
C:Userss4AppDataLocalTempWER3064.tmp.appcompat.txt
C:Userss4AppDataLocalTempWER30C2.tmp.mdmp
Unfotunately the AppData folder doesn't exist.
Several programs I have stop working after a few minutes I get the following message "Program_name has stopped working. Windows can check online for a solution to the problem". Two programs I have I get that message as soon as I start the program. I found an available update that addresses this problem, but when I try to install the update, I get a message that this update does not apply to my computer.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI use Vista Ultimate x64, which works fine, just fine, except when gaming.Whenever I fire up a game, the arrow/pointer/marker flashes constantly slightly down and to the right of the center of the screen. Very annoying. Or, let me be precise, Bioshock works fine(except you need dualcore like Crysis for the sound to be smooth, I have a 4200+ lying around), it's was only in Farcry2 the marker appeared, and I actually managed to get rid of it once, by moving it out of view before starting the game - didn't work again. And now the pointer appears in Hitman Blood Money as well, same place. These are the only games I've tried in VUx64 so far - might it be the Crossfire?

Non-compatible drivers to Vista 64-bit is apparently still a problem no matter what is listed on the Windows Vista compatibility page.
I've just bough a PC with the i7 Intel processor, 6 GB RAM including the 64-bit Vista version.
According to my net-bank using Java from Sun Microsystem I have to use the 32-bit version of Internet Explorer if I wanna use the net-bank since the drivers are not compatible to the 64-bit version.
3 questions:
How do I force the installation of Internet Explorer to be 32-bit and not 64-bit version?
Is there a trick to have both Internet Explorer 32- bit and 64-bit on the same PC?

when I login to the one I use most of the time, I notice that Firefox wont work, there is no error, actually, it starts but nothing happens, its just blank, it says "Done" in the bottom left corner, but it is nothing in the Firefox window. And when I close FF I get a error;
"Firefox has stopped working
1.Check online for a solution and close the program
2.Close the program"
If I chose the 1st option I get this message "The exception enknown software exception (0xc0000005) occurred in the application at location 0x02ff8cf0. Click on OK to terminate the program." Then I tried IE (32x), same thing there, so I try IE 64x, it worked. Also I tried to restart my switch, ping some webpages, release / renew IP. There was no difference. I also tried System Restore, but I could only restore to about 15 minutes back in time, wich was when I turned on my comuter today.
Then I tried to start some games to see if it worked, first Peggle Deluxe, that worked fine. Then WoW, that did not work fine at all. The first thing that is wrong is that when I start WoW the launcher says "Cannot connect to the News Server. Please check the network and try again later." I pressed play anyways, just to see what happens, and what happens is that the screen turns dark, Winamp is still playing music, but no sound from WoW, and alt + tab doesnt work, same with the windows button or alt+ f4. but ctrl+alt+del works. so I was able to close the program, it wasnt responding either ofc..................
Today a suggestive article in Marketwatch.com mentioned the demise of Vista operating systems. It was pointed out that this is unlikely due to the overwhelming brilliant and costly staff who developed and marketed this costly venture.
I am suggesting a more practical approach to this situation. Buy Apple. The message is clear. Big business is unbending in their approach to this software. The Lemming approach is in high gear.
So for the Barack Obama movement in operating software to take hold, you need the candidate. Treasure your XP (A statement I thought I would never utter) and move to the most logical system available. Apple OS is bought in quantity will send a message to the bottom line that Microsoft recognizes, shareholder value.
I am still little confused about NTFS junctions.
I know that symlink and symlinkd are special files ( mklink, mklink /D ) little related to shortcuts.
They are managed in filesystem level, being transparent to programs.
I know hardlink (mklink /H) is an alternate name a/o path file atribute,given to the same file record in MFT.
But junction - is it de facto a hardlink to folder ?
Beside of scope of targetting, what is functional and usage difference between junction and symlinkd ?

Because this system has a mere 1GB of RAM, I was curious to get a sense of how thrifty OS X Leopard is when it comes to memory usage. I was especially curious to see how Leopard compares to Vista, which as been slammed by critics as a resource hog.
To get started I opened Safari and opened a single web page, then began playing an MP3 track in iTunes. With those tasks running, I checked the results from Activity Monitor:

Next, I launched a similar set of tasks on a system running Windows Vista Ultimate. To make the comparison fair, I used the System Configuration utility to disable all but 1024MB of memory in the system, which has 4GB of RAM. This system is using the full Aero interface (disabling it had no significant impact on the RAM footprint). Running VISTA Ultimate 64-bit. Any advantages/disadvantages in using either standard Internet Explorer (I assume 32-bit but not sure) or 64-bit Internet Explorer? I have both versions of Internet Explorer and don't see any particular difference.

Since I have Vista Home Premium i am wondering if WindowsLiveOneCare would give the same security that I get from Kaspersky 7 ? View 4 Replies View RelatedI have upgraded to Vista Ultimate. You have to run Windows Mail (WM) on Vista - you cant run Outlook Express (OE). With OE you could "cut" an image out of MS Word and paste it into the body of the message. You cant do that in WM and its a massive drawback. Does anyone have a solution to this? I have read the threads on "upgrading" to Windows Live Mail but is that just the latest version of WM or something else? Also, it appears that there are lots of crashes when people have done that.

"CCC.exe has stopped working"

Yes i ran AVG, i ran malware, and superantispyware, none of them finds anything.
I cant even load daemon tools now, it gives me some error: "Engine loading was failed", cant uninstall it, it gives me another error, and some of the programs like netlimiter if i start them from my objectdock dock they automaticly stop working, only when i start them from the normal .exe they dont crash.
I do not want to see any of the programs at the top of the list of All Programs (especially Internet Explorer). I just want to see the program folders listed, preferably sorted by newest or most recently modified first, by alphabetically would be OK. How to get rid of the 8 programs shown in here? Thanks.
View 6 Replies View RelatedIve been having a few problems with uninstalling some programs via the add/remove programs tool. For example I have been trying to uninstall Itunes and everytime I do Windows installer says it is preparing to remove and then it stops and a window come up that says "The system administrator has set policies to prevent this installation." and then another one says I do not have sufficient access to uninstall Itunes and to please contact system administrator.
So I spoke to a friend how recommended this forum subject and I followed the Take Ownership steps a few times but to no avail it still does the same thing. I can't update Itunes untill this one is uninstalled!!!!!
I use Vista 32 Ultimate and I have this problem during the startup of Windows: The UAC control stops 2 programs and I'm not able to let these programs load with UAC control active. Tried everything also in Windows defender but no success. I must always confirm and let run these programs clicking on the UAC block tray icon that appear during the load of these 2 programs. Someone tell me that these programs blocked by UAC must be updated from the developers to pass the UAC.
View 9 Replies View Relatedwhen i go to start, all programs, all my folders/programs show up, but then i noticed that theres a "programs" folder within the list, and when i click that, it shows all the same folders/programs that are in the "all programs" list. but then some of the folders within the ones in the 'all programs" list, they are empty, but they show up in the programs folder in the list. i dont know how this happened and i just wanted to know how to fix this issue.

View 9 Replies View RelatedWhat, if any, inferences can be drawn from the fact that there are typically three times more posts about Windows Mail (WM) than Windows Live Mail (WLM). Could it be that:
(a) WM is more troublesome than WLM (in view of the greater complexity of WLM this seems improbable)?
(b) Many more people use WM (seems probable - I wonder what the figures are)?
(c) A higher proportion of technically savvy users are likely to be early adopters of Windows 7 who have to find an alternative to WM. Some then migrate to a non-Microsoft email client such as Thunderbird, while those that try WLM find they can master it with few problems (plausible)?
My feeling is that there seem to be an awful lot of folk hanging on to WM and that they might be put off updating to Windows 7 because neither WM (nor Outlook Express) will not be available (at least not in a securely supported version) to run on it. I am cross-posting this to both newsgroups and suggest that replies go to WM as it has the larger following.

A local retailer tells me that Windows 7 doesn't have the programs divided into these two sections, and doesn't know what 'X86' means. View 4 Replies View RelatedI was wondering if anyone knows what is wrong with my laptop.. Recently my roommates and I got Left 4 Dead, and while playing it would constantly crash to my desktop. It wasn't that big a deal because I could just get back on, but when I shut my computer off, it seemed to have corrupted something, as now I can't do anything on it. One of my roommates had the same thing, where after a restart his screen was messed up, but he was able to clear the problem by installing new graphics drivers. I uninstalled mine and reinstalled new ones, but that didn't fix the problem. I tried it again, but I couldn't get on the internet to get new drivers, so it's using the crappy basic ones. I don't know if this is the right place, and you probably need more info, so feel free to ask me more....I have tried to run a chkdsk, but it will not run at startup (just goes straight to logon). I have been following tutorials around this site, but to no avail. I think I'll give it a few hours then try again and check back here,
View 4 Replies View RelatedI had a virus a couple of weeks ago and had it removed, but since the removal my computer won't open up any programs without going through default programs. If I click an icon on my desktop default programs pops up and I have to find the right program to open the programs with. I was reading some other posts and saw one that suggested that I download PC Medkit, I did it and it did not work. So now I'm out $40 and my computer still isn't functioning properly. Any suggestions would be extremely helpful.
