Windows Mail Newsgroups Versus Thunderbird
Jun 2, 2008
When trying to post to newsgroups, such as this one, with a graphic =
attachment such as a .GIF file, Windows Mail is incapable to post. =
Thunderbird posts it like a champ.
I'm running Vista Ultimate.

After installing Office 2003 on a Dell 1330 with Vista Home Premium, the default mail tool changed, of course, from Thunderbird to Outlook. I uninstalled Outlook, and the default email tool changed to Windows Mail. I have tried using the Default Programs control panel and other means to change the default email tool back to Thunderbird, to no avail. Each time it starts it asks me whether I want Thunderbird to be the default. Each time I click yes, but the setting doesn't hold.
I have gone through all the usual steps to define Thunderbird as the default. In Windows Mail, the option to change it so that it is not the default is mysteriously grayed out. how to get around this? Windows Mail seems more like a virus to me than a legitimate piece of software. It doesn't even show up in the list of Windows services, so I can't even turn it off! What's so weird about this is that it all worked fine until I installed Office 2003 ... now, I can't change the default mail tool.

I have upgraded to Vista Ultimate. You have to run Windows Mail (WM) on Vista - you cant run Outlook Express (OE). With OE you could "cut" an image out of MS Word and paste it into the body of the message. You cant do that in WM and its a massive drawback. Does anyone have a solution to this? I have read the threads on "upgrading" to Windows Live Mail but is that just the latest version of WM or something else? Also, it appears that there are lots of crashes when people have done that.

What, if any, inferences can be drawn from the fact that there are typically three times more posts about Windows Mail (WM) than Windows Live Mail (WLM). Could it be that:
(a) WM is more troublesome than WLM (in view of the greater complexity of WLM this seems improbable)?
(b) Many more people use WM (seems probable - I wonder what the figures are)?
(c) A higher proportion of technically savvy users are likely to be early adopters of Windows 7 who have to find an alternative to WM. Some then migrate to a non-Microsoft email client such as Thunderbird, while those that try WLM find they can master it with few problems (plausible)?
My feeling is that there seem to be an awful lot of folk hanging on to WM and that they might be put off updating to Windows 7 because neither WM (nor Outlook Express) will not be available (at least not in a securely supported version) to run on it. I am cross-posting this to both newsgroups and suggest that replies go to WM as it has the larger following.

In Windows Mail, if one hits TOOLS the drop down menu list shows "newsgroups" there among other options (I have Vista) and mine does NOT have it listed. Somehow I lost it. Either through an old crash, a system restore due to the crash or I somehow accidentally deleted it. (I have no idea how long ago this happened - none at all.) Now I cannot replace it on my own. I need help BADLY. I very much want it back there as there are half a dozen or so really good newsgroups I discovered recently and want to join and it would, of course, be GREAT to have that back on my drop down menu.
My questions are: How do I get it back? Where do I go to download Windows Mail again or to "repair" Windows Mail? I have way too much mail in there right now to lose. Many thousands of pieces of mail. (I'm very, very surprised they haven't asked me to "compact" yet like Outlook Express often did when I had XP - back in the good old days. If this cannot be done (not with my luck I'm sure) is there other rather easy and convenient options for me to subscribe to 6 or so of these "newsgroups"?
Obviously I am a virgin newbie to all this and do not understand the Techie Lexicon at all but am interested very much in joining these newsgroups to learn about new things as well as resolving my problems - troubleshooting. Also learning a few tips and tweaking for Windows, Vista, Foxfire and Internet Explorer is my primary interest. Very, very safe totally freeware (compatible) is a bonus if I should get lucky.

Can someone provide some help in searching Windows Mail? When I used OE under XP, I could search for a subject or author, obtain a list, click on the one I want -- and that would take me to the desired thread. When I do the same thing under Windows Mail, I am only able to read the specific message I click on. If I want to read the whole thread, I still have to scroll down a long list in an attemp to find it. Surely, I must be missing something? How can I go back to the functionality of locating the thread? I am using Vista Home Premium (full edition, not OEM).

2 computers, one running XP & Outlook Express shows any newsgroup posts or replies I make. The other, running Vista Home Premium and Windows Mail, won't display any of my posts or replies to threads but, others can see and reply to them and I can see my postings contained in their replies.

Installed Vista Ultimate 64 bit over the weekend, dual booting with my XP Pro install, so far I am finding myself liking it more and more. I have set up newsgroups in windows mail, and email access. I really like some of the features of windows mail versus the older Outlook Express, especially the calendar feature, and the spellcheck included. I use Outlook 2002 ( from Office XP ) on my XP Pro install, mainly for the calendar feature, so was pleased to see this included in windows mail. Not going to try to install Office XP on my Vista, as I understand there would be issues with that. I think what I have with Windows Mail though, will serve me ok.
I see where another program, Windows Live Mail is available as well. I checked on the link I found, and really did not see a lot about it. What is the general consensus here, is the Windows Live Mail program much better than the included windows mail program? I don't really understand what the differences are here.

I have had Vista for about a week. Still learning Win. Mail vs the old Outlook Express in XP. I have set up mail & Newsgroup accts. That seems ok. My quest. is why in Newsgroups
do I have to click *catch up* in order for the counter to clear? In OE they cleared when I went from newsgroup to newsgroup. Is this just the way WinMail works or did I miss a setting somewhere?

I'm trying to figure out this whole newsgroup thing, but I'm having problems figuring out how to find the server name to put in the "Internet News Server Name Field" in live mail. I'm a member of a google newsgroup, but I still am lost as to how to get updates on live mail. I know this is an extremely stupid question, but can someone please point me in the right direction?

Contact has a Vista business laptop that until recently when you went into Windows Explorer to look at pictures you can press the email button and it would prepare an email in their email client Mozilla Thunderbird with the image as a file attachment.
However recently this has changed back to Microsoft Outlook for no particular reason. Checked all the defaults and they all point to Thunderbird still being the default program for email. Under file associations, have checked that for protocols, SENDTO is set to Thunderbird. However the "E-mail" button still now brings up Outlook. How can I change this back. It's very frustrating and I've played around for a good long while.

Quite new to newsgroups within vista mail. In the past when I have used newsgroups and subscribed, I manage to be able to follow posts or look at messages from weeks ago. All I seem to be getting is 137 headers or whatever there called.Tried unsubscribing, reset etc. Do newsgroups work like normal mail that once you've downloaded you need to keep a copy on the server or you won't get that message ever again I posted a message yesterday and had to online to the Microsoft online newsgroup and search for my post.

I want to continue using Eudora as my default mail (the one I use for personal mail), and I would like to use Yahoo to forward messages from newsgroups. When I start to do that, Windows Mail starts the process to set up a mail account. The Internet e-mail address that is shown automatically is correct (my Yahoo mail). It asks for the mail server and SMTP server for outgoing mail, which I assume would be the information provided by suddenlink that I also use for Eudora. Then it asks for my e-mail username. The name that appears automatically is actually the name that appears before the @ sign in my Yahoo address. The next box requests the password my Internet service provider has given me. That sounds like the password for Sudden link, but I want to use Yahoo for this purpose.

I am having problems importing contacts into Vista Contacts. I tried 2 things :
1/ LDIF
I exported my contacts in Thunderbird under an LDIF format.
I then imported this LDIF file within Contacts
The import stops 1/5 of the way, simply saying that there is an error
in the contacts, and it stays stuck
2/ CVS
I exported my contacts in Thunderbird under a CVS file. I then tried to import the file within Contacts but cannot do the mapping:
- all column headings are lumped together, with plenty of ","
- all accentuated caracters are replaced by squares
Also, with the LDIF method, 50 contacts out of 300 were imported. In these imported contacts, all accentuated caracters were replaced by symbols. I opened the CVS file in Microsoft Excel: everything is fine.

Where are the Windows 7 newsgroups? I have a Toshiba Satellite x205-sli4 32-bit with Vista Ultimate. I would like to upgrade to Windows 7 as soon as it is prudent to do so. I have read in the media that this upgrade will be free of charge. Is this true?

Does the MS decision to leave out Windows 7 newsgroups as well as a newsreader in the OS a harbinger of the future? That the UseNet is being phased out - or is dying - after almost a third of a century? Does MS know (and control) something we don't? So is this also a social change dictated by technology's progress? - That people will now forgo these discussions and instead concentrate on 'faster' means of conversation. I don't really know where to stand on this but I feel we are witnessing another - rather uncelebrated - change in online sociology. Should I look forward to future newsgroups carried on Twitter someday? Just some year-end musings (meaningless perhaps). Wishing everybody a Happy New Year.

Is anyone ever going to create newsgroups like Microsoft.Public.Windows.7.xxx? And, a comment: I installed the Windows 7 Release Candidate on an old SIS-741-based motherboard with an AMD Athlon XP processor. It works great. The drivers for the SIS-964 built-in Ethernet were never built for Vista, but amazingly, the XP drivers worked fine for this device. The driver file that Windows 7 is using is called SISNICXP.SYS. I also pointed Windows 7 to the folder with the "i386" drivers for the Promise SATA-300 TX4 add-in card (ulsata2.inf), and it happily installed the SYS files, and the attached SATA disks work fine.
Windows 7 found the AC '97 audio drivers on Windows Update. I meant to disable the audio on this computer since I'm not going to use it, but I forgot. (My computers that do audio, have much better audio add-in cards than a built-in AC '97 chip!)I'm encrypting two of the 500 GB SATA disks with BitLocker now. It is a very slow process, but I'll only have to do it once.I'm happily amazed that the "i386" drivers for the SATA controller, and the SIS-964 Ethernet drivers from Windows XP, worked in Windows 7.

1) I don't see any Windows 7 newsgroups here except one in Italian. Are there any Windows 7 newsgroups in English?
2) How can we get some color difference between the active and the inactive title bar or application window border in Windows 7, while keeping the rounded corners on application windows?
When you pick a Windows 7 Aero theme such as the one called "Windows 7", you are allowed to turn off transparency (Yay!), and you are allowed to pick a "Window Color". You can select from several different pale, washed-out color schemes here. But, even if you use the Color Mixer, you can't get much difference in color between the active title bar and the inactive title bar...........

I've had no luck at the Thunderbird forum. And this is one of those situations I find it hard to believe I'm inventing the wheel. Surely others have tackled this one. I tried one more measure this morning after googling around a bit: I told Vista to search hidden files and folders. But it still isn't finding my Thunderbird emails. A few days ago someone suggested going to microsoft and looking for an add-in or plugin. I didn't find anything there searching "thunderbird."

HP finally after already one ship-back, replaced my motherboard and hard drive. Now that she's not in a defective swamp, Vista is working. Somewhat. I use Thunderbird because Vista mail still limits me to 29 addreses in my address book, always deleting the last one and adding the latest. That is way dumb, even dumber than I for not scaling the learning curve of Outlook. Is there a way, please say yes, to get Vista's desktop search to index my Thunderbird emails?

On Windows Vista Compatibility Center is a list of 32-bit/64-drivers and compatibility.
[url]
Non-compatible drivers to Vista 64-bit is apparently still a problem no matter what is listed on the Windows Vista compatibility page.
I've just bough a PC with the i7 Intel processor, 6 GB RAM including the 64-bit Vista version.
According to my net-bank using Java from Sun Microsystem I have to use the 32-bit version of Internet Explorer if I wanna use the net-bank since the drivers are not compatible to the 64-bit version.
3 questions:
How do I force the installation of Internet Explorer to be 32-bit and not 64-bit version?
Is there a trick to have both Internet Explorer 32- bit and 64-bit on the same PC?
Do I have to have another PC with 32-bit Vista if I wanna use programs with 32-bit drivers not compatible to Vista 64-bit,or is it possible to configure the PC to have both 32-bit Vista and 64-bit Vista?
