Does WSR Have A Speed Versus Accuracy Control Like Dragon Does?

Sep 17, 2009

I can't seem to find the speed vs accuracy control
on Vista Speech. (WSR)

Does such a control exist?

If so, is the accuracy affected if I adjust it for
maximum speed?

Speech - Does Doc Scanning Really Improve Accuracy?

Feb 25, 2009

Does WSR (Vista Speech) provide a way of selecting _which_ documents to scan in order to improve speech recognition?

Near as I can determine, it does not seem to matter at allwhether my Vista Document folder is empty, or chock-full of text documents, as far as speech recognition accuracy
is concerned.

I _did_ check-mark the box that allows user documents to be read, but it does not seem to have any effect one way or the other.

Dragon NaturallySpeaking 9.5 And SP1 Can't Install

Apr 6, 2008

I use Dragon NaturallySpeaking Medical 9.5 and am currently using Vista. The update SP1 was installed and I have received a message stating maximum speech data has been reached. I closed Word 2003 and Dragon and rebooted and received a message stating attempting to recover from low resources message. With that said I am unable to dictate because this message still persists. Has anyone received this message after the install of SP1?

Windows Speech Recognition Vs. Dragon?

Jun 6, 2010

I see that Vista offers Speech Recognition software that allows you to open apps and dictate speech into Word, Wordpad, etc. Does anyone have any idea on how this free Speech Recognition software compares to the Dragon software that I've been seeing advertised on TV commercials?

Memory Speed: Can't Stop Wondering If The Difference In Speed WOULD Matter

Apr 13, 2008

I just bought a new pc with Vista Home Premium, it came with: 1GB PC2-6400 DDR2 SDRAM, expandable to 4GB. I wanted more memory so I bought a 2GB kit PC2-*5300* DDR2 SDRAM, because it was on sale for $60. The 6400 speed would have cost me over $200. The salesman assured me it would work fine and I wouldn't notice any difference. I installed it when I got home and everything works great, no problems. But I still can't stop wondering if the difference in speed WOULD matter. Can anyone explain, or provide a link explaining, when, if ever, I would benefit from the faster memory. I mostly use my PC for surfing the web, email, and some photo editing.

Confession For My Nasty Abuse Of The Dragon Speech Engine

Nov 25, 2009

I am ashamed of myself, for what I did recently to my loyal Dragon Naturally Speaking speech engine. To properly suffer penitence, I feel I must offer myself up to one of andy t's long tirades. ....y'know, where he interminably carries on about the really important things in life, such as minor spelling errors.

Confession is good for the soul, so here is the shameful description of what I did to the loyal Dragon engine. I dictated my speech into the $200 version of the Dragon engine, but not just any speech. Complex medical terminology, such as: "perioperative transesophageal echocardiography"

Shameful, because the $200 version of the Dragon speech recognition software was never designed to handle such complex jargon. My dictation was roughly 600 words, roughly 1,479 syllables, which took me 7 minutes to dictate. If all the words were one-syllable words, that would be a dictation speed of 211 words per minute!

Slow Internet Speed:speed Goes Down To 300 Kbps

Sep 5, 2008

I have Vista x64 Ultimate and I'm having internet connection issues. My laptop is the HP Pavillion dv7. My ISP tells me everything is fine on his end. I have a router (Linksys model BEFW11S4) 2.4 Ghz - 802.11b. When I connect the wire from my modem directly to my laptop, I get internet speeds of 900 Kbps. But when I use the router, the speed goes down to 300 Kbps. Is there a setting in Vista that could be doing this? According to Linksys, I should be able to attain 900 Kbps with the router. The laptop comes with a wireless adapter (Intel Wi-Fi Link 5100AGN).

64-bit Versus 32-bit

Aug 1, 2009

On Windows Vista Compatibility Center is a list of 32-bit/64-drivers and compatibility.

[url]

Non-compatible drivers to Vista 64-bit is apparently still a problem no matter what is listed on the Windows Vista compatibility page.

I've just bough a PC with the i7 Intel processor, 6 GB RAM including the 64-bit Vista version.

According to my net-bank using Java from Sun Microsystem I have to use the 32-bit version of Internet Explorer if I wanna use the net-bank since the drivers are not compatible to the 64-bit version.

3 questions:
How do I force the installation of Internet Explorer to be 32-bit and not 64-bit version?

Is there a trick to have both Internet Explorer 32- bit and 64-bit on the same PC?

Do I have to have another PC with 32-bit Vista if I wanna use programs with 32-bit drivers not compatible to Vista 64-bit,or is it possible to configure the PC to have both 32-bit Vista and 64-bit Vista?

Vista Versus XP

May 8, 2008

Today a suggestive article in Marketwatch.com mentioned the demise of Vista operating systems. It was pointed out that this is unlikely due to the overwhelming brilliant and costly staff who developed and marketed this costly venture.

I am suggesting a more practical approach to this situation. Buy Apple. The message is clear. Big business is unbending in their approach to this software. The Lemming approach is in high gear.

So for the Barack Obama movement in operating software to take hold, you need the candidate. Treasure your XP (A statement I thought I would never utter) and move to the most logical system available. Apple OS is bought in quantity will send a message to the bottom line that Microsoft recognizes, shareholder value.

Junction Versus Symlinks

Jun 13, 2008

I am still little confused about NTFS junctions.

I know that symlink and symlinkd are special files ( mklink, mklink /D ) little related to shortcuts.

They are managed in filesystem level, being transparent to programs.

I know hardlink (mklink /H) is an alternate name a/o path file atribute, given to the same file record in MFT.

But junction - is it de facto a hardlink to folder ?

Beside of scope of targetting, what is functional and usage difference between junction and symlinkd ?

Apple OS X Versus , RAM Division

Oct 25, 2008

Interesting note comparing RAM useage on OS X and Vista

"As I noted earlier this week, I’ve begun using a MacBook (the basic white model) and keeping a log of my experiences.

Now that I have this system up and running on a full-sized screen, I’m ready to make some head-to-head comparisons with Windows. Because this system has a mere 1GB of RAM, I was curious to get a sense of how thrifty OS X Leopard is when it comes to memory usage. I was especially curious to see how Leopard compares to Vista, which as been slammed by critics as a resource hog.
To get started I opened Safari and opened a single web page, then began playing an MP3 track in iTunes. With those tasks running, I checked the results from Activity Monitor:

As you can see, the OS reports that 581MB is in use, with 430MB free.
Next, I launched a similar set of tasks on a system running Windows Vista Ultimate. To make the comparison fair, I used the System Configuration utility to disable all but 1024MB of memory in the system, which has 4GB of RAM. This system is using the full Aero interface (disabling it had no significant impact on the RAM footprint). I opened Windows Media Player and Internet Explorer, began playing the same MP3 tune and browsed to the same page that was open on the Macbook. Here’s what Task Manager showed for memory usage:

Firewall Exceptions For Programs Versus Ports

Dec 4, 2009

I'm running Microsoft Office Groove and it is setup under Vista (Business edition) Firewall Exceptions as a Program, not a Port. To clarify, when you look at the properties of the Groove (Program) Exception, it does not mention anything about ports. I know I can add an exception specifically for Port 2492 (Groove's primary communication port), but would that be redundant if the Program Exception for Groove already opens up that specific Port.

Cut & Paste - Outlook Express Versus Windows Mail

Apr 23, 2009

I have upgraded to Vista Ultimate. You have to run Windows Mail (WM) on Vista - you cant run Outlook Express (OE). With OE you could "cut" an image out of MS Word and paste it into the body of the message. You cant do that in WM and its a massive drawback. Does anyone have a solution to this? I have read the threads on "upgrading" to Windows Live Mail but is that just the latest version of WM or something else? Also, it appears that there are lots of crashes when people have done that.

RAM Speed Question?

I installed the following ram on my PC OCZ Reaper HPC 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory - Retail.

I have also installed the NVIDIA system monitor.

My question:

Why does my computer recognize the RAM at 800mhz (this shows on boot up and in the Nvidia monotor) when my motherboard supports 1066 and the ram is also 1066.

I have a p7n diamond 780i motherboard from MSI.

Mouse Speed

Oct 3, 2009

Ever since installing Vista I seem to have lost control of the mouse speed. Even changing it in Vista does not fix it. The double click is so fast, that 95% of the time is performs a double click when I did not want it to. This is SO damn annoying. It is an older Microsoft mouse with the light and wheel and buttons on the side for going back and forth in Explorer and on the Internet. I think it was called Intellipoint, or something like that. Anyhow, does anyone know if this is a bug?

Slowed Down, How To Speed Up?

Mar 6, 2010

I have a trusty laptop running Vista Ultimate with 2 Gb RAM. When I first got it it ran programmes like Mozilla Firefox and the Office Suite rapidly, opening the apps quickly when required. Over time programmes began to slow down upon opening. I also tried the new Windows 7 which was OK but had a few drawbacks. So I bit the bullet and re-set my machine back to how it was when it was new.

Reloaded my apps and data files, speed returned. Now it's slowing up again after only 4 months. do these proprietary programs like Norton etc actually clean up the computer and restore its trusty speed in opening apps? If so, which one have you found to be the best in practice?

Speed Up Flip 3D

Mar 1, 2007

Every single Windows Vista presentation and demo I have seen has always included the new Flip 3D, alt+tab replacement. This is a cool feature that really helps you switch between windows when you have a lot open but for some, it can be a choppy experience.  If you have a low end graphics card you may experience dropped frames resulting in a choppy animation experience while flipping through your windows.  One easy way to make Flip 3D perform much better is to limit the number of windows it draws on your screen.

Follow the steps below to speed up Flip 3D on your computer:

Click on the Start Button, key in regedit and hit Enter....
