Won't Shut Down And Utorrent And Other Apps Won't Start
Jul 13, 2007
My laptop is really going crazy some apps i use all the time won't star anymoret but i check the taskbar and their processes are running, also the system won't shut down i usually end up hibernating cause it won't shut down, in overall my laptop has being acting pretty weird lately .
I am experiencing the following very strange intermittent problems and evil behavior in XP. My Start Menu sometimes only appears for a split second when clicked and will not stay displayed. Also minimised apps. wont maximise and apps. and short cuts on the desktop wont launch when double left clicked and instead show properties as if they were right clicked, Updated from SP1 to SP 2 as well as all the security updates. Ran Adaware and Spybot to find any unwelcome visitors. Adaware only found one minor issue. Ran Symantec Antivirus which found and quarantined several viruses. Ran WinDoctor which found and said it resolved quite a few issues. This is really a pain as it makes the system virtually unusable except for when it is behaving which is rare
My Uncle just got a Dell computer and installed a dsl modem, and after a couple of days the computer was running super slow, and a popup appeared a few minutes after startup with a 60 second timer saying that windows was going to shut down. I thought that it was Spyware/adware so I installed and ran Adaware, and I deleted over 380 infected files, and ran AVG 7 virus scan and detected trojan viruses. I saw that his internet security settings were set at the minimum level and the firewall was disabled, so I enabled the firewall and raised the bars on the security levels, but there's still a major problem.
My laptop is a little over a year old, and has gradually gotten slower to both start up and shutdown. I have hardly anything running at start up, and the disk has been defraged. On the other hand, my 5+ year old desktop boots up in LESS than half the time, running less RAM and a slower processor. The only difference is that the desktop was reformatted a few months ago, but it has not slowed down. Here it is Toshiba Satellite A-105 1.7 Dual Core 1Ghz RAM XP SP2 Start up Items:AVG Anti virus Zone Alarm Firewall Toshiba Hot keys (The Fn Function keys) Toshiba Touch pad (Mouse)Intel WirelessI've done several scans and there are no viruses or spy ware. I have also used both Crap Cleaner and Norton Utilities (No, Norton is NOT installed and found no registry issues. I did run Hijack This, and here's the log.
Every time I try to reboot or turn my computer off i get an 'END PROGRAM' message telling me that if I end it too soon I will lose any unsaved data. When I check the Event Viewer Log it says, Type: Information, the date, the time, then the Source: ccPwdSvc,Category: None,Event: 1User: System, computer: Home.
I've been reading thru posts & seem to have some big time slow down issues. I'll post as much info as I can to get started please let me know what else may be needed to help clean this laptop up.
My computer works really well, the only problem is, when I start or shutdown my computer, it's very very slow. It's appears to be frozen for a minute or so and then start or shutdown. It does start or shutdown properly but it's slow. It can take up to 2 - 3 minutes to either start or shutdown.I noticed that when I start my computer, I see the Windows Update yellow shield appear near the clock and then goes away. I'm not sure if it's related but thought I would let you know.
I'm no pro regarding computerstuff what so ever, but I know my ways aroudn at least. But the other day I got a whole bunch of abd viruses I think..from where I have no clue. I run Nod32 and it probably missed this ones. So anyway, I noticed I had some kind bad stuff called Vundo trojan. is that correct? So, I managed to remove (I think) that with Spyware doctor.BUT, the problems I had stared before i removed it. I have one account, my own, with admin. rights. BUT the "Shut off" button is missing in my startmenu and I cant start the Windows Task manager, because it has ben blocked by the..administrator? BUT, thats me? So, how can this be?It's really annoying and I have noo clue what so ever on what to do here. I tried to create a new account, and that worked fine. But that would mean alot of extra work with mailprograms and stuff.
My first post here, hope to get some help...my wife is ready to kill me (and vice versa) as she is accusing me of screwing up a month old Dell Dimension 8400.
I'm at work right now writing this so I can't do anything until I get home tonight. Here's the problem...
I tried downloading a cheat for yahoo pool, when McAfee and Webroot Spysweeper picked up a host of adaware and junk trying to get installed I immediately stopped installing (but of course, some got through). After a few minutes the PC decided to shut down on it's own, without me doing anything. I restarted and the same thing happened almost immediately after start up, it shut down on it's own. I restarted using F8 and used the "restart with latest settings that worked" command. Got on and was able to run McAfee and some other programs where a trojan was found and removed. Everything worked fine after and the computer had been on for 5 or 6 days since then.
I get the mj view error code at start up.I also cannot shut down my computer(i believe the 2 are related) I have to do it manually so I just hibernate.Information was given to me that it could be the ebates moneymaker program installed.I checked for that and do not have it but i do have i give shopping window.Well, I went to remove this program and i cannot. The error code comes back everytime i click "remove"I also successfully removed 2 other unwanted programs so it seems that this program could be the problem. How can I get rid of the error message and this program? Do I have to contact the site itself?I have contacted H&P(4 days worth of computer emails)and they had me all over this computer with no results.
My laptop always takes a long time to start up and shut down, and while running can often be quite slow. I have a Dell inspiron 1300 with Windows XP. Do you have any hints or tips on how I might be able to sort this problem out?
I imported a picture from my docs and somehow it imported the whole folder which has slowed my computer on start up and shut down. how can i remove these pictures from this background box permanently
i think im postin in the right place. I have a system that i built about a month ago that keeps crashing and i dont know why. It runs XP. when i start the computer, it will either shut down after the windows loading screen, shut down after the motherboard maker screen, or shut down as soon as i power up. I buit it, but this is the first time ive done anything like this before, and i dont know much about the workings of the insides yet.
Some days before I installed Internet Explorer 7 Beta 2 for Windows XP-SP2. But I didnt feel secure with the changes and decided to uninstall it. But a problem comes. When I want to close the P C, I do as always: Click Start, Close, Shut Down. But, the P C instead of closing restarts. My Windows XP-SP2 is installed on Portuguese.
My first post - I hope this is the right forum, since this is a problem installing XP.
I have an emachines T5088 (full specs are listed below) that came pre-loaded with Vista, but since Vista can't run some of my old apps, I want to load XP onto it from my factory non-OEM XP disc. I booted from the XP disc, and it went through the usual act of pre-loading all the drivers, then when it went to actually start the installation I got a BSoD. Sorry, I didn't have the foresight to document the actual error messages on it. If need be, I can go through the process again to get that info
I've searched everywhere for an answer to this but no luck yet. My Start>Run works just fine in my WinXP Home Ed but I have several small CLI apps (.exe) that flash their own black screen and disappear leaving nothing! No sign of the process either. One of them (MBRWizard) seems to be a very popular app, I've downloaded several versions, always the same: the screen disappears as soon as I press the "any key" that it wants before it shows me more options.I find it hard to believe it's a problem with the app - people seem to be using it all over. If it's something I need to configure I'd sure like to know what it is.
This just started happening today. When I minimize any app that I am using, it doesn't show up on the toolbar with Start in the bottom left corner. Only way I can see what's been minimized is to open Windows Task Manager. Can anyone please tell me how to fix this?
my toshiba laptop was working fine. then a few days ago one of my games gave me a regular error during the start "game.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close." when i clicked 'click here' it displayed some info including "modname:msvcr71.dll". i thought maybe that game had somehow gone corrupt and i reinstalled it. the error did not go away and i was unable to play my game. then suddenly explorer.exe started giving me the same message with the same msvcr71.dll listed as modname. in both cases, the error message says that the following file will be included in the report and then some appcompat.txt in some temp folder. this file was unique everytime but the phrase appcompat.txt was constant. also when i tried to find this file in the specified location i found that it did not exist. i cannot understand what triggers the error, it occurs totally randomly, but i have to be dragging a file icon.
when the error message is displayed, the system does not stop and i can choose to ignore the message for as long as i want, everything is fine. when i click close the explorer restarts.also, recently i got similar errors from vlc player when i tried to play a wmv file in slow motion. this error message also lists msvcr71.dll as mod name.then another game started giving me the same problem with the same modname msvcr71.dll.i cant make any sense of all this.
I've got a problem with my PC and I'm trying to solve it without reinstalling Windows. When I launch certain programs or games system just hangs and stays like that until I restart it...It does this with totally random things like: on final 'Release date check' of GTAIV installation (which worked some year ago onsame Windows)when opening video feed from SB Audigy 2 ZS Video Editorhappened a few times without running anything but very rarelystarting BioShock 2 pressing PrintScreen (didnt happen until I added Logitech G19 to my PC)
This issue is occurring on 2 computers - In the past 2 weeks Windows updates cause MAJOR lag in operations - can't open apps, slow response from browser.Updates mostly hang in the 30% range and do not move forward for hours....I leave the computers on over night to complete and sometimes the operation is still not complete.Have disabled auto updates to no avail. It still activates on reboot.
Where is the location of the temp files for the updates so they can be deleted to start fresh without autoupdate?
I've read other threads recently regarding update problems but didn't want to hijack them with my own issue.
2 laptops , both XP, but different systems How do I (with specifics) move applications from one machine to another without having to completely reinstall all the exisiting apps on the new machine.? Is there a way to do with without cables?
Immediately after purchasing an 8 GB USB flash drive with the intention of running portable applications off it on the various Windows XPmachines I have to use, I had installed the Portable Apps Base (http://portableapps.com/suite) and then through it, several applications, including OpenOffice Portable, Firefox portable and Tucan Portable.
I must have screwed something up.some but not all of my folders open a command prompt window. I managed to change them to an explorer window instead, but in file type, I can figure out how to get "open" back as the default when I click on these folders. The right click menu either has expand greyed out, or doesn't have it at all. Open is the third item, and find first (now) with command window second. How do I reset these? And, any idea what would have messed them up? I did start sharing with my son's computer and I downloaded firefox 1.0.3.
I have no idea what my sister and her friends were doing on the comp for a couple of days that i decided not to use it, but now:a few programs take forever to load or don't load at all, but they do show up under the processes tab in the task manager - after pressing Ctrl Alt Del, the task manager icon appears in the system tray, but the thing only shows up a minute later - my system recovery is "not able to protect my computer," and restarting does nothing - actually, when restarting or shutting down Windows, it stops at where it only shows my desktop background and cursor [which is still able to move] and nothing else after that, so i have to hold the power button and force it to shut off - when I right click the desktop and click on "Properties..." [or something similar to this action] it doesn't show up at all, and whenever I try to open any application after that, they don't even load at all either
I am running PC, Windows XP and recently had several viruses deleted from system. Problem started when running Internet Explorer and would receive an error tab every time stating IE must close. The data error was a mcsvrt.dll problem. Now when I start the computer it takes 10-15 minutes to boot completely and accessing Mozilla or any apps after about 3-4 mins takes ages. It runs so slow, something has it almost completely bogged down. I run spybot but after a while it freezes up
Whenever I try to shut down, I get a couple of End Now messages, these are usually msnmsg.exe and explorer.exe. I'm running Windows XP Media Centre Edition.
I have always shut down my pcs at the end of the day, assuming it saved household electric bills etc. However on my new Vista machine it actually says not to..just to let it go into sleep mode as it's better for it.Ok I can leave that one.. but should I also be leaving my XP pc and lap tops running and if so why? My main Xp computer is getting on a bit (3 years old and pretty full but runs my router ok) so I want to treat it.
Just set up my daughter's Dell w/Home XP fp2 machine and notice I get a message "rundll32.exe shutting down" when I try to shut down machine. I ran ADAWARE spyware removal and it removes two files that are listed as MALWARE. WindowsSystem32a EXE and Windowssystem32Bridge.dll. If I remove them then I get a notice on startup that it can't find Windowssys32ride.dll.
