Zero Wireless Configuration

Mar 19, 2005

I am living in a shared residence and the guys here are running wireless adsl. It is an infrastructure network using 128bit WEP encryption. I'm not sure about their hardware but I am using an asus 54mbps usb stick. I have no problmes logging on but for some reason the wireless config. program automatically checks the "the key is provided for me automatically" option in the network properties. Now this prevents me from getting access to the network after any sort of disconnection. If I uncheck this box the stars in the key field (representing the WEP key) dissappear and so the key needs to be reentered. It only does this some times and since I don't have a copy of the key (the network administrator enters it on my computer) every couple of days I need to get the key re-entered on my computer. It is a real hassle and I can't work out why windows keeps defaulting to this option of having the key provided automatically.

MS Configuration Settings

Mar 22, 2008

I have stopped some services running to speed up my computer but I have noticed recently it keeps reverting back to normal start up and I have to go through unchecking the services that are not needed again. It may be since I installed 'iplayer' from BBC website which uses the Kontiki p2p network. This uses a utility called k services and k host which runs in the startup. I disabled them as they connect to the network even when the program is shut down. How do I stop ms config reverting back to normal please?

Backup And Configuration

Feb 19, 2008

On Drive C Used Space 11.2GB Free Space 137GB (NTFS)I am expecting this drive to fill up over the next 18 months. Drive D Not used at present condition raw 40GB (I got that from the properties tab - after I had tried to get Windows to format it). How do I change it from raw state to something that can be used? I also have Seagate Free Agent 250GB external backup - Not Used at present. I have some software called Spotmau Power Suite 2008 but I am not really sure how to put this whole thing together. At the moment when I start the computer (Drive C) it runs CHKDisk on drive D every
time.
1)What Im really trying to do is format Drive D. I tried to do that with Windows but it didn't work. I dint know how to do this so any advice would be helpful.
2)I would like to use the rest of the capacity for backup that is Drive D and the Seagate external drive, but Im not sure how to go about it. Can someone help please?
3)Am I right in thinking it would be better to use just the one operating system Windows XP on drive C and not put it on drive D as well?

Configuration After Login

Apr 27, 2006

I have what is hopefully an easy question: I have a windows "configuration" box that pops up quickly after I log in (XP Professional), then it closes down right away. It's like one of those "configuring personal settings" boxes that shows up after you install something, then reboot to complete the install. When you log in, the box pops up saying that it's configuring the thing you just installed. But this one goes by so quickly, I can't see what software it's trying to confiure. I uninstalled the couple of utilities that I had recently installed -- thinking they might be the culprits -- but it's still appearing. And since it's started appearing, my machine hangs for a couple minutes after login, like it's waiting for something to timeout. Before this started, life was good. Whatever it's trying to do, it's not being able to do, because it keeps running every time I log in. And my virus scan is completely clean.Anyway, my question is: does anyone know where Windows stores the information about installations or configurations that need to run on reboot? I've looked in the registry in the Run and RunOnce sections of both HKLM and HKCU, and there's nothing there. It's also not in the Startup folder.Obviously, there's some command somewhere that's running whenever I log in. I just need to find out where it is so I can figure out what's causing it.

High CPU's In Wireless Zero Configuration

Feb 6, 2008

My Compaq running on Windows XP Home has suddenly and mysteriously started running at high CPU's (almost 100%) at boot. From Task Manager, I could see that it was the svchost.exe that was running high. I contacted Microsoft and after 2 1/2 hours of shutting down literally every process and then slowly re-adding them, it was found that it is the wireless zero config that is running all of the CPU's. I am on a laptop (wireless through DSL - sbcglobal - and using a linksys router which is running at 11 - maximum connection)downstairs. I have NEVER had a problem until 2 days ago. I have added NOTHING to the computer.

I can sit directly next to the router (upstairs) and the CPU will drop, but not completely. When I plug into Linksys using ethernet, the CPU stops to 1% - and the computer resets itself. It will be fine the rest of the day. I have also had success unplugging Linksys for about 5 minutes (while sitting next to it) and that also seems to reset the CPU usage. HOWEVER - if I restart, either from warm or cold boot, the same cycle happens all over.Linksys gave me a patch, which has done nothing. They said if it was a Linksys problem, the patch would have fixed it.Microsoft can't help - it is a wireless issue.SBC can't help - it is a Linksys issueI haven't yet called Compaq because I am afraid they will tell me that the high CPU is due to a failing in my internal wireless. THE Presario 3240US IS 4 YEARS OLD AND HAS BEEN GREAT - NEVER ANY MAJOR PROBLEMS! Obviously, the computer is having to work too hard to connect to the wireless system, thus the high CPU's. And, when it runs high, I have problems with the internet slowing down. Anyone out there ever had this problem? Is it time for a new computer?

Today I was told that the following changes need to be made by February: 1) In the printer driver properties, Enable the Duplexer 2) Under printing preferences, set Duplexing as the default. I was told that we techs need to physically touch each workstation to implement these changes.

Hardware Configuration Error

Mar 5, 2010

First, I had to make a small change to the SATA Mode from ACHI to IDE because if I didn't change it, it would crash with 0x0000007B BSOD. But after installing the Text part of Windows XP, i was moving to the GUI part and it said: Windows could not start because of a hardware configuration error. I am confused of what to do with it. I tried, fixboot, chkdsk /r, i even tried installing it again, but to no avail. Oh and one more thing. I had Windows 7 Ultimate at first in one partition. I installed Windows XP on the other partition, but it didn't work. In the end i couldn't even access my Windows 7 now. I need it for my school project.

What are these entries, can I uncheck some of tjhem, eg the ones belonging to programs long ago deleted? And most important why is this section separated from startup?

Speed Up Using Microsoft Configuration

Feb 25, 2005

I am currently using windows xp on my computer. I tried to speed up the computer by making some changes in msconfig. I went to selective startup and unchecked some boxes in startup. The changes didn't make a difference after I restarted the computer. I clicked on diagnostic startup by accident, so I then clicked normal startup and restarted my computer. Now help & support will not work. It keeps saying that windows can not start help and support due to system files not running. I also can not log onto the internet. It says aol must download files first before you can access. I hit yes and nothing happens. I tried to run error checking and it won't let me because it says there are some things not running. I also went into system information and checked the hard drive and it says that it failed. How I can fix this would be greatly appreciated.

In my "services" tab in my "system configuration utility" accessed via 'msconfig', I count about 75 entries all of them checked. Way To Restore System Configuration After Repair?

Aug 2, 2008

Spybot Search and Destroy had finished scanning my computer (Dell Dimension e520 running Windows XP service pack 2). I then clicked on it to fix the problems it found, and started doing something else on Tradestation. A short time later, a message popped up on my screen that I had never seen before. It basically said there was a system fault, that my computer was going to reboot in 60 seconds, and that I should save all my work. The only thing I remember about the message was that it said something about "NT" system fault or error fault or something like that and a timer counted down from 60 seconds. There was no way for me to cancel it. A separate message from Spybot also popped up. I don't recall what it said other than it asking me if I wanted it to start automatically before everything loaded up the next time I started my computer because of something it had found or that had occurred. But I wasn't able to click OK before the time ran out because I was too busy trying to figure out why I was getting these messages and save my work at the same time.

My computer then rebooted. However, while Windows was loading, it stopped and gave an error message stating that a particular file (hal.dll) was missing or corrupt. On my computer I have the hard drive partitioned into two drives, C: and E:. Both have Windows on them, but the E: drive is the main drive. When I reboot my computer, it asks me from which drive I want to start Windows. If I don't choose one, it automatically selects the C: drive, which is the one I always choose anyway. When I got the error message above, I inserted my XP CD, rebooted the computer, and booted Windows from the CD so I could try to repair it. I chose the repair option instead of the clean install option because I wanted to replace what I thought was just one missing or corrupt file. The software went through the process of what looked like a clean install, but I didn't think anything of it because I've used the repair option before and I seemed to recall this being the case and everything working out okay after it was done.

However, when my system rebooted automatically after the "repair" was done, and I chose to boot Windows from the C: drive, Windows loaded up as if it was a brand new install. Everything from my normal start up configuration was gone: all of my icons were gone, none of the programs that normally run on start up were executed, only one monitor of my multimonitor set up my four monitor setup was being displayed, etc. In addition, almost all of my devices were labeled as unknown devices in Device Manager. My cable modem wasn't recognized so I had no Internet connection (I'm writing this from my laptop, which has a wireless connection to the modem). When I looked at my directories, they all appeared to be intact along with the files they contained, except all of the files in the My Documents and My Pictures directories were gone. I suspect all of the files in other directories that are created when Windows is installed are probably gone as well. When I compared the Windows directories of the C: drive where the "repaired" install occurred and the E: drive, with which I had done nothing, I realized that I wasn't missing just one file, but several hundred files across multiple directories in the Windows directory on the E: drive. When I rebooted again and tried to start Windows from the E: drive, I got the same error message while Windows was loading that I got before I "repaired" Windows on the C: drive.

I called Dell tech support, but the person I got said he couldn't help me because Windows XP wasn't installed on the computer when I bought it. He seemed to imply that he knew the solution to my problem, but wasn't willing to help me at all because it was coporate policy, even after I pleaded with him that I was desperate. Oh, he was more than willing to help me if I had a problem with DOS, since that's the OS that came with the computer. After I begged him to help me, he actually had the nerve to snicker while he repeated like a corporate bot that he was very willing to help me with any DOS problems, as if this was a laughing matter. After that, I tried calling Microsoft, but they were closed. Is there any way I can restore my system to the way it was before all this happened? It will take me forever to figure out how to reestablish my Internet connection, reinstall all of my hardware (I didn't even get any "found new hardware" messages when Windows booted after my "repair") and software and then reinstall any upgrades to those. I am in dire straits here.
