pc takes for ever to get started up. Through msconfig, my start up registry is loaded down!!! Maybe that is why when it finally does come up when I click on MS wword or Excell, it takes for ever for them to load

I think it's a registry error. I looked where another forum "told me" to look, and I had different entries.
Have XP, service pack 2, and all updates. Use Norton, MS Antispyware, Adaware, Spybot, and weekly check with online virus check programs. Machine is clean (I hope). Have 2 user accounts on the machine. Had email issues with the ISP and got resovled/ I could open Outlook Express from my user account, but then my wife's user account wouldn't open Outlook Express at all. Thought I would try in Safe Mode to see if maybe some other program was interfering. NOTE: I did no harware or software change. Went to msconfig, and clicked on Safeboot.

Running XP-Pr0-SP3 on a standalone home PC with 4GB RAM, 300 GB HD split 3- ways with OS on the 'C' drive, a 64- bit processor and TELUS high speed Internet.
Recently having replaced the mouse with a Logitech Wireless and not having had it start up, I read in the Logitech forum that a workaround would be to go to MSCONGIG and uncheck everything, re- start, then re-check the items I wanted to start up and re-start.
i then check all items in the startup tab and run a normal startup instead of selective.
I did this and now both Logitech and my Webshots program do not start at startup. Is there a workaround or possible change of permissions that I need to do to resolve?
I have been unable to access the help and support from the start menu, when I click on it I briefly get the hour glass but nothing else, also when typing msconfig in the run box it is not available. I have xp home edition sp2 "Windows cannot find "msconfig" make sure that you typed the name correctly,then try again. To search for a file click start and search.

All my desktop icons are there, though they take longer than normal to load and taskmanager works fine and i have all my navigation menus as well. I am also unable to run msconfig, even in Command Prompt. When i type in msconfig, i get the following message.msconfig is not a recognized command. Another problem that i have been having is that if i click on a window, and taskmanager was infront of it, taskmanager does not move behind my active window. I am running windows XP, on a Presario V2000 with a 60 gig hd, and a 512. i have tried everything to get it to come back, i have booted in safe mode and tried that way, i have also used StartUp Mechanic to disable everything that i do not recognize in hopes that something is blocking the start menu from loading. I am okay with a computer, but the simpler the instructions the better.

It ran smoothly and when I chose compact registry and it finished, it asked me to restart windows, I accepted, and it restarted, after the windows logo, the screen goes blank (black) and does nothing, I restarted again, and chose last working config, the same thing, screen goes blank, and when I restart using any of the safe mode configs, the screen not only goes blank, but there is a blinking cursor on the upper left corner,
I tried to run a Repair install of the Windows XP CD, but, I don't have the "R" option in there, only "ENTER" to Install, "D" to Delete the currenyt partition or "F3" to exit. I don't know how to work with the Repair console I also would want to know what happened if there was no error reported
Solved the problem by reinstalling windows totally, off the 7 disks I have. Anyway, just want to vent it out. Could not figure out why when I turned on my computer it told me that the registry was corrupt, missing, or whatever? Would not start no how. Did the f2 thing or was it the F8 thing, don't remember. Anyway got the start in safe mode, go to last good fig. restart in dos mode, restart windows, etc. Most of the time, got the windows logo, the green/blue lines going across, took quite a while, then the screen said the above message. Had nothing new installed except Windows updates. Thought computer was fried. Even tried just installing/recovery but to no avail. Finally did the complete install. Thank god I also have the sp2 disk or else it would of taken forever to download. Just don't understand why, it worked fine for 2 days after the downloads from microsoft.

The hard drive light doesn't even come on like before when it was at least looking for my shortcuts. All the shortcuts are on the hard drive in the correct folders where they should be but the only way I can access them is through the Windows Explorer file mgr. I followed the link from other threads to the microsoft site explaining repairing the registry using the installation disk. I got the computer from my brother in law and do not know where the installation disks are. Also it was factory installed and the microsoft instructions say they do not work with OEM software. Is there a way to fix this without the disk? If I find the disk Dell supplied will it work since it it was not a XP install disk?

View 2 Replies View RelatedA few days ago I started getting registry problems, applications not wanting to startup right and ect. Then it was followed by shortcuts crapping out on me. When I clicked on the shortcut to see what was wrong it said there was a .LNKtx problem with the .exe or somethign to that notion. I can bypass that problem fairly easily without a fix, however when I do that and load somethign such as a game it will cause the CPU to either a) shutdown program or b) make cpu crash and restart.

I mainly boot from my �main� 80 GB hard drive, and that�s the drive that won�t boot after I changed the drive letter.
I wanted to rename the Drive letters associated with each of these hard drives. I was able to change the �extra� hard drive using the Disk Management option. I was not able to change the letter of my �main� hard drive, because I booted from it. I used Regedit to change the boot drive letter, based on the Microsoft Help & Support article:

I'm gettting a blue screen when i try to start my laptop with Windows XP media. It's saying the registry cannot load the hive (file): /SystemRootSystem32ConfigSECURITY or its log or alternate. I tried to delete the registry entries which were bad, I had 30 of them, but the these two will just not go away, even by doing them manually, such as saving as a backup then deleting it manually and remerging. They just show up no matter what I do, or so use programs like Registry Mechanic, which I found only mediocre, very far from the ratings. to delete these two entries somehow from someone who is actully knows how to without using several so called registry cleaners, which only work partially.

However, yesterday one of my friends brought his flash drive and I copied some of the documents since then I am having a big trouble. I need experts help please. * Can't run msconfig, cmd, regedit ect, however, explorer can run
* tried to download antivirus software it did not let me do, I had one thought was not good enough and
uninstall it, later on I could not install the other one too. My pc is now without antivirus.
