Start Registry Editor - Erase Data Trail
Sep 22, 2003
Start the Registry Editor by clicking Start, Run, and type "regedit" (without quotes). Go to this key:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlSession ManagerMemory Management On the right, locate the ClearPageFileAtShutdown value. Right-click the value, select modify, and change the data value of the registry key to 1. If the ClearPageFileAtShutdown value doesn't exist, add it. Right-click the right side of your specified key and add it as a DWORD value. Then change the data value to 1. Restart for your changes to take effect. Note: Your shutdown time may slightly increase.

I'm trying to fix my Start Menu by editing the Registry values in but I am unclear about WHAT DATA SHOULD BE UNDER THESE 4 REGISTRY VALUES to fix the Start Menu. The problem I am trying to fix in my Start Menu is that looks the same as before, but when I hover over or click the All Programs submenu it doesn't appear. The hard drive light doesn't even come on like before when it was at least looking for my shortcuts. All the shortcuts are on the hard drive in the correct folders where they should be but the only way I can access them is through the Windows Explorer file mgr. The problem started after a Windows Update install

Firefox stopped working after the latest update and reinstalling latest and previous versions doesn't repair.Using the control panel I uninstalled again. A utility program says I have some 80 entries in Registry with "Mozilla." FF is my one and only Mozilla product so I'm guessing something in one of the80 is the problem. The utility, JV16PT, will erase them. Is this safe? I will reinstall FF and let it make new, and hopefully good entries.

In my Internet Explorer under the view I still see the option for the Roboform toolbar although it is grayed out. I have removed this program, and I thought I got all of the remnants. Should I keep looking for files to delete somewhere, or would I need a registry editor to remove this reference?

Should file names in the merge registry entries dialog box look like this? The real path to this file is C:Other FilesRegistry Backups. I've been using the Command Prompt (cmd.exe) recently; could that have anything to do with this? I just can't remember if file names always looked like that.

I have windows XP Professional on my PC celeron 1.2 ghz, Mercury 810, 256 sd ram. I think my PC is infected with a virus that doesn't let me access Registry Editor, Group Policy Editor, MS-Dos from windows and all those vital tools. As soon as try to access them the system restarts automatically. Moreover, my antivirus program doesn't detect any virus (may be this too is the work of a virus). Has any body any idea what this problem is? Is this the work of a virus? If yes, I would like to know how to detect and eliminate this virus.

there's two ways of achieving this. The easy way:
1. Create a .reg file and name it to whatever you think might fit. (create an empty .txt-file and rename it to whatever.reg)
2. Rightclick it and choose "edit".
3. Paste the following into it:Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTDriveshellDefragCommand]@="defrag.exe %1 -f -v"
4. Save and close.
5. Doubleclick it and answer yes/ok to the questions.
6. Rightclick a drive and choose 'Defrag' to defragment it......

So I downloaded a .mpg file and it randomly won't delete. When I right-click I can't chose an option to erase nor can I use the menu to erase. I can't rename it and I can't send it to another folder, I've checked it with NOD32 antivirus and it doesn't show any anomalies, I'm completely baffled and I do not know what to do. I tried restoring my system to another date and it won't do so either, I tried various different dates and it just won't.I have one peculiar thing though, I tried to maybe replace it so I figured how to get it's name so I copy-pasted onto another .mpg to see if I could overwrite the file but it mentioned how the name was too long, maybe that's why I can't erase it but their must be a way?The only options I get with right-clicking is "Play, add to windows media player list, open with., and send to."

I ran registry mechanic V5 on my office XP machine. It ran smoothly and when I chose compact registry and it finished, it asked me to restart windows, I accepted, and it restarted, after the windows logo, the screen goes blank (black) and does nothing, I restarted again, and chose last working config, the same thing, screen goes blank, and when I restart using any of the safe mode configs, the screen not only goes blank, but there is a blinking cursor on the upper left corner,
I tried to run a Repair install of the Windows XP CD, but, I don't have the "R" option in there, only "ENTER" to Install, "D" to Delete the currenyt partition or "F3" to exit. I don't know how to work with the Repair console I also would want to know what happened if there was no error reported

Solved the problem by reinstalling windows totally, off the 7 disks I have. Anyway, just want to vent it out. Could not figure out why when I turned on my computer it told me that the registry was corrupt, missing, or whatever? Would not start no how. Did the f2 thing or was it the F8 thing, don't remember. Anyway got the start in safe mode, go to last good fig. restart in dos mode, restart windows, etc. Most of the time, got the windows logo, the green/blue lines going across, took quite a while, then the screen said the above message. Had nothing new installed except Windows updates. Thought computer was fried. Even tried just installing/recovery but to no avail. Finally did the complete install. Thank god I also have the sp2 disk or else it would of taken forever to download. Just don't understand why, it worked fine for 2 days after the downloads from microsoft.
