Using win xp pro. Sometimes when we try to boot up our dell says "Configuration file missing". After that it won't go any further. Is there a way that we can make a copy of our configuration file? How would we insert it when we saw that screen again?
I have windows xp sp2 on oem, is it ok for me to make a backup copy of it in case i lose it, i wont lend or sell it to anyone, just for personal use and as only i have the product key stuck on my computer is it o.k. to do this? Just in case i lose it and will it still work eg. let me format my computer? in case i lose my original.
EASY way to copy my hard drive to a bootable CD? I think the HDD I have now is dying, and I would like to have a hard drive I can just pop in which has all the information I have now. I have heard horror stories about Norton Ghost, so I'm hesitant there. I also bought a product called Drivecopy...BEFORE I learned that it is not compatible with XP Pro. Ghost and Drivecopy are both PowerQuest products. I have been told that if you simply copy one drive to another it will not be bootable because of some hidden/missing files that Windows uses. I have also heard that most products which are SUPPOSED to do what I want will only work on drives the exact same size and will duplicate my smaller partition if I go to a larger drive. There MUST be an easy way, but I'm stumped.
I bought my mom a used computer with Windows XP. If it ever gets messed up I won't be able to reinstall Windows since the computer didn't come with any disks. Is there any way to make a backup copy of Windows XP in the event that I ever need to reinstall it for her? Also, we don't have the administrator password for the computer that was set by the previous owner.
I'm trying to install UPnP on my system but I get this error message. The dll file IS there. I have tried downloading the file from the internet and Browsing to it on the desktop but it always gives this error message.
I'm in the process of repair/recovery of my machine (Dell Inspiron 8500 with Windows XP Home, Service Pack 2). I'm following exactly the instructions in:
http://attachments.techguy.org/attac...chmentid=62075, but a problem has developed. The "software" file (which is the file that the original blue screen error message says is "corrupt, absent or not writable") will not copy to the new tmp directory to create the backup. My understanding from the article is that this backup file (software.bak) will later be used to restore correct settings for various software applications. Since I can't copy it, it appears that I am screwed,
What I want to do is create a .bat that will copy a file to several locations(all within the same folder, however with different names).
I have a folder that contains the master copy of my db and I want to run the batch file to update the users db files. The reason being is they each use thier own front end.
I usually backup my weeks work on Friday afternoons. What I do is run a "search" for all files created or modified within the last 7 days and then "copy" all relevant files to a folder on an external hard drive, and then burn a CD.
Everynow and then, I get the following message. "Cannot Copy File: Cannot Read From the Source File or Disk"
When installing a larger main drive, how do I get the drivers copied onto the slave before I take out the main one I wonder is there a simple way of doing this, I am using Windows XP home edition, the PC is an oldish one and isn't any specific make, so I can't get any clever programs from the manufacturers site
During my network troubleshooting, I was checking my NIC configuration on my desktop to make sure that file and print sharing was enabled and realized that there is nothing installed, no clients, services, or protocols. When I try to install I got an error message that the file could not be found. This is strange because I get access to the internet. Is this possible?Could this be the reason my laptop cannot access the desktop? How I fix this?
hi i have two computers both running windows xp. they are both connected to the internet through an ethernet switch. i want to make one of them a file server what is the best way to do this?
I am trying to make a batch file that will open the wireless application on my computer and run for a certain amount of time. The information I gathered so far is: When I go into cmd on windows XP and type the following; Code: C:Program Files3 Mobile Broardband3ConnectWilogApp.exeThat opens up the application and automatically connects to the internet. The next bit I will need it to pause there for around 65 seconds, Then I need it to do the following command; Code: TSKILL WilogAppTo close the application.
I am trying to burn a file to a CD that I created in Word. When I try to make changes to this file I receive an error that says "You do not have access to the Folder. E:. See your administrator for access to this folder." I am the owner of this PC. How can I be allowed to use this file?
I would just like to know if there is any software that can make an .iso file from files on a hdd. I guess like compiling an iso image is what I want without burning anything to disk. I have alcohol 120 and what I want to try out is to put all my music and other files into nice 4.7gb iso or any other image format like mdf so that I can mount the image on a drive and if I need to back stuff up its only a double click away. I think this might end up being as much of a hassle to look through drives, but I don’t like the normal way of looking through folders and folders and sub folders to have my stuff nice and neatly organized on my pc.
I have some ISO Files and would like to make a cd with each file. I also want then to be bootable. Do I just copy the ISO to the disk, or do I copy the contents of the ISO to a disk. How do I do that?
I reecently installed Vista on my computer to try it out and after a few weeks wanted to change back to XP Pro as has some things i did not like.
Here's what i did:
1. I booted into BIOS and changed the bootup to cd/dvd. 2. Booted with my Original CP PRO cd (Not bought with my computer bought after). 3. followed the instructions and deleted the partition on C and formatted (Full not Quick) the C: drive with NTFS.
It gets to the stage that the SETUP is copying files and after 43% and says it cannot copy file WOWEB.exe and to press Esc to skip, F3 to QUIT and ENTER to try again.
It does this with a whole lot of files (Over 30) then after skipping thise files it reboots and gets the BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH!!!.
I have 2 DVD drives and tried both with the same result. I tried a differant Windows XP disk with the same results.
The motherboard has a backup facility which i had backed up previously with XP but not fully and can restore to that point but i want a complete reinstall.
I have formatted and installed windows XP with that disc loads of times without any problems before.
In trying to copy a set of files that look to be in ascending sort order from a hard disk directory to a USB thumb drive, XP copies the last few, then starts at the beginning down to where it started. Eg. if in order as 01,02,03,04, 23,24 , XP will copy 23, 24, then 01,02,03 etc. until all the files are copied. This screws up any opportunity of getting these files in sequential order on the USB device. I tried copying this way, deleting the out of order ones and copying the rest in sequence only to have XP do the same thing. This file copy method must be a way of efficiently copying files but it sure messes up the order of files on the USB device.
Had to reformat my drive and now whenever i use my win xp sp2 install disc...i first format the drive and create the proper partition..the windows disc then starts copying files to the computer but at a point i get an error message saying that windows setup cannot copy the file...and it tells me which file. I redid this several times and each time at a some point in the copying it gives me this error...each time with a different file name What should i do at this stage?
was Having music on it and wants it back. I hooked her HDD to my system using a USB2.0 box and have no problem accessing the drive or copying pictures to my system. If I try to copy music, I get Access Denied. I have file sharing enabled, have unchecked 'read only' in her files and still get the same message. I thought it might have something to do with them being iTunes, but I have tried Sound Taxi, Imgburn and a few others to copy or convert them and I get the same message.
I'm running Win XP Pro SP 3, I have a file that I periodically copy to several different computers on a LAN. The exact destinations of the file change occasionally and I want to minimize the amount of maintenance involved when there is a change. In the folder containing the file I have a shortcut to each of the destination drives. When one of the destination folders changes I update the shortcut in that folder. If I drag the file to each of the shortcuts using the right mouse button one of the options is to copy the file to the target of the shortcut, so one way to copy the file is to manually drag it to each shortcut. Is it possible to achieve similar functionality with a batch file? It is easy enough to write a batch file that copies the files to each destination by coding the destinations into the batch file but is it possible to use a batch file to copy the file to the target of each shortcut? I suspect that parsing the .lnk files is complex but I don't know if there is another way to do this.
When in XP SP2 I go to a CMD prompt and I try to copy a file to the UNC Printer Share on the directrly attached printer on LPT1 and I get "access is denied" error message. But if I copy the file to the >LPT1 port it works fine.
The EPSON LX-300 dot matix printer is directly attached to a XP SP2 pc via a parrallel cable LPT1. It is also shared. \OST-RecpReceipt It works fine when connected to a XP SP1 pc so I'm assuming it's a SP2 issue.
I am having trouble running a dos medical office management program after copying it via a Zip disk from a Windows 95 to a Windows XP computer. All files copy correctly and are installed on the Win XP hard drive ultimately. When I start the program It tells me that I need to increase the number of files in the Config.sys file from 40 to at least 99 files. After going to the Sysedit32 folder in XP, I found the Config.sys file (with nothing in it) and wrote the FILES=99. After re-booting XP I still get the same message. The dos program starts up the same way. When I copied and installed the program to another Win 95 or 98 computer the program runs fine after changing the Config.sys FILES=40 as prompted. Am I changing the correct file? The program uses FOXPRO 2.5 for the databases. The is no Config.sys file in the dos program
