I'm running Windows XP Pro on a 6 month old laptop. Is there a list of "usual suspects" that cause this error? This time it's Filseclab's Messenger and it occurs every time I turn on my laptop and Twister Anti-TrojanVirus starts with varying delays. Twister itself keeps on running without incident.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI currently have Zone Alarm Internet Security Suite 6 & it is due to expire in about 8 days. I was wondering what others of you used for anti-virus, anti-spyware, firewalls etc.I have heard that sometimes it's not the best idea to use a complete package, like ZA internet security suite, for the whole lot You hear a lot of conflicting info about them all, I've heard that AVG is good, Norton isn't, someone said windows defender was good.
View 12 Replies View RelatedI am running Windows XP on a HP Pavilion ze2000.I think I have a problem with Windows Live Messenger. Actually, I think I have several problems:
1. Messenger tries to load in my tray when I start the computer. It never did this before. It also does the same when I connect to my broadband via dialler. At the moment I am denying access through Zone Alarm. Is this normal?
2. In All Programmes I have a Windows Messenger Icon and a Windows Live Messenger Icon. Again, is this normal? There is only an option to remove Live Messenger in Add or Remove Programmes.
3. There is a "1 contact pending" message above the contact list in my Live Messenger, which leads to a "page not available" message when I click on it.
3. When I close Live Messenger, I get multiple "RPC Server Not Available" warnings which I keep closing but keep reappearing. They appear too fast for me to close them, so I have to restart my machine.
I've got a PC with Win XP SP2. I'm currently using Etrust antivirus and Windows Defender on it. But, I'm suspecting it's got virus and/or spyware that those two softwares are not detecting. Can anyone recommend me other good anti-spyware and antivirus software (preferably free)?

When either program reads C:/windows/I386 it intermittently powers down. I think there's a corrupt file in the main body of I386, but can't isolate it. I'm not sure which type of file should be in this area.

"Exit Windows" etc.In the Control Panel, "Sounds and Audio Devices Properties", under the "Sound"tab, the Sound Scheme shown is "Windows Default".If I go to the "Program Event", the above (and other) events have sounds associated with them, and give the proper sound."wav", "mid" and "MP3" files play OK using Windows Media Player.
Clips from News Networks (which include audio and video) play OK
What do I not need? Computer seems to be slow.Some of my desktop icons started to disappear.
View 13 Replies View Relatedone of my svchost instances just keeps on growing and growing. after 2 days of uptime it is about 70mb. i have used process explorer to determine that it is the RPC service that has started the instance of svchost from the Network service account. is it normal that this process keeps growing like this, usually when people have a problem with svchost it is because i hogs the cpu but in my case it is hogging the pagefile. i dont experience any XP slowdowns so i dont know if this actually is a problem. but i want to solve this before it becomes a problem. one time the svchost process was 100mb and kept growing

View 3 Replies View RelatedI was messing around with a few themes on my computer. I tryed out windowblinds and tgt soft's style xp. I was really making my computer look nice. Until, I changed my theme too something different. Now my theme is all nice but when I go too Start--->All Programs, my font is twice as big as usual. I know the theme is not making it bigger, because I have tryed other themes! The font and all looks ugly and way too big! How do I change this? Now all of my themes are changing too this same font and font size
View 14 Replies View RelatedWhenever i launch internet explorer it takes longer than usual to load. And when i go to type a web address it just freezes and never loads a new webpage. I don;t know what is going on. This has started to happen on friday. I;ve ran the following and they found some stuff and have deleted it but i still have the same problem. I;ve even tried system restore and it still persist. I noticed that when i try to delete my history i get an error about not being able to open shell32.dll or something and that some about a inetcpl.cpl is having a problem.
I recently got the computer listed into my signature, and I am having problems. I pretty much get an error every five minutes, then when ever I am doing like messenger and browsing at the same time. It gives me the usual blue screen with white text, saying an error, I have found mostly that it is one of three errors that usually happen. I am getting so angry, as I NO JOKE in the last hour, have had 37 errors.

I can hear the harddrive working in a somewhat normal manner just after power on but there is never a hint from the monitor. Anyway, I offered to at least pop off the side cover and take a look for any hint of what may be the problem. Since he just moved to another town, his computer was subjected to the usual transportation handling etc. So what would be the usual things to check. I've never had a Dell or Windows XP Home. I even used the Add-Remove program to uninstall it but it is still there. This is becoming a personal thing and Microsoft seems to be winning once again. How can I uninstall it safetly or at least keep it from auto starting to the Task Bar?

View 8 Replies View RelatedI have this older notebook computer I got for free, its a Duron 900mhz 256megs 20gig system, its pretty old and slow. But since its all I have right now I will have to live with it. I just did a fresh XP pro install on it and I am trying to descide which Virus software I should use that uses very little of my limited resources. I have used Norton before and whoile it works fine on newer faster computers it seems to really slow down older slower machines so I would like to stay away from Norton on this notebook. So anyways, my real question is, do I really even need virus software?
I dont ever download from unknown sittes and only open emails from known senders. I surf the net with Foxfire so spyware isnt that bnig a problem as it is with IE. Also I dont have anything important on this computer that I would worry about losing to a virus infection.I have a Linksys router that should have a built in hard firewall, correct? SO can I get away without the antivirus? I run Spybot and CCleaner to keep my computer free from spyware and junk. Do I need any other programs to keep things running smoothly? DO I even need Spybot if im using Firefox? And If I do need to run a Virus program, which will slow down the computer the least which uses the least of my limited resources? I liked Fsecures EZvirus it seemed to slow things down far less than Nortons.
I currently use Norton Corporate edition anti-virus. It works pretty well but takes up a lot of resources. I don't mind as much on my home PC but it runs TOO many tasks that I want running on my laptop. What is a good alternative to Norton that doesn't HOG too many tasks but still gets the job done?

FirstlyStart > Run> Type: services.mscwhen the Services window pops up scroll down to "Messenger" the description is "Transmits net send and Alerter service messages between clients and servers. This service is not related to Windows Messenger. Windows Messenger has gone missing (The whole program) along with The Calculator and my Sound Volume Control both of which i had to reinstall via the XP disk.I've scanned for virus's and and have come up with nothing, I used to use a vista tranformation pack awhile ago but have since got rid of that. But i think it might have messed with a few things.

It is later edition than 4.5, eg. 4.7, but nothing I can do will stop the pesky thing from popping up in my system tray near to the windows clock. It seems to be integrated with absolutely everything.I have tried clicking on the Tools-Options-Preferences, and unchecking the relevant boxes.I have also tried going into the administration tools sections-services-rightclick messenger and it is displayed as "disabled" yet sure as fate it is still in my system tray box with the white X on the red background on it!
