Unable To View Desktop Icons & Toolbar
Jul 19, 2010On startup i have nothing but a blank screen ( with nothing but the HP invent default pic ) and have to enter via task manager to run anything.

Desktop With No Toolbar, Or Icons
Jan 20, 2005Ok, Im DESPRATE for help right now, and im going to explain my whole situation which is grim
I have a SONY VAIO 2.53 GHZ P4 Processor, 512 RAM, Windows XP pro (not so valid edition) 2 year old Comp. And I have 2 hard drives both 200GB, C: (windows and programs) D: video editing files...
I have a project to turn in TOMORROW... I could get in Big trouble and Fail a class if i dont get this done TONIGHT
SITUATION:
Last Night I noticed when I was editing that some of my avi exports were all distorted and fragmented... So i figured "I havent EVER ran defrag (stupid me) on this hard drive maybe I should defrag it" So I looked into a defrag program called "diskeeper" I defragged C: (windows drive) and attempted to defrag D:.... I came to my comp and discovered an error that just said failure with the drive or something... After that I could not access (D I restarted, diskcheck did not work, and I dont want to do system restore... I posted on another websites forum and someone said I probably went over the 137GB limit... I think when I went over the 137GB limit, it possibly overflowed over some kind of boot files or something that lets windows read the disk i dont know (not that techincal with computers)So i looked into that, and I have an ATA card... and Windows NO service pack XP pro... Ive heard things about having a 48 bit bios or something... And after installing WINDOWS XP SP1... I try to get on my computer and i load windows
No Desktop Icons Or Toolbar
Jul 7, 2010System running fine now save for one thing -- my desktop page is a complete blank. It takes ages to load and then I see nothing but the desktop picture. No icons, no McAfee boot, and no toolbar. Everything has to be run from the task manager. Recently my lady, who uses the other desktop, doesn't even have a desktop picture -- it just comes up blue. She thinks she once saw a message about lack of memory.

However, when I log into the computer with my own user name and password, I get the old NT view. I get an NT view on the rest of the computers in house except the rest of them really are running NT. Desktop Toolbar Items Keep Rearranging Themselves
May 8, 2007I like a clean desktop so I choose to hide my desktop icons and use a desktop toolbar. I arrange items on the toolbar with the ones I use most at the bottom. Since last Friday, the items on the toolbar keep rearranging themselves whenever I shutdown and restart the computer. I have looked every where I know to look and I cannot find a solution. I've tried a System Restore but I get a message that the system cannot be restored to a previous time. Could there have been a Windows Update that is causing this and if so, how can I get it back the way it was?

Mar 22, 2007I am missing everything from my desktop except for the background pic. The only way I can open programs and files is to go through the Windows Task manager and open them individually. While trying to fix the problem, I noticed explorer.exe is no where to be found. All are running Win XP.Seems that they turned on their computers today or yesterday and all their icons are missing.The only thing that they are able to get to is the task manager, nothing else.I haven't heard of any virus'/ trojan's/ or malware resently that causes this and reading ton's of descriptions takes too long.

Oct 24, 2008I've been using XP SP2 and have never had a problem with thumbnail view in windows explorer - I turn it on, it shows me pretty thumbnails of any images, movies, etc in the folder. A few days ago, I noticed that it had suddenly stopped working for image files - video and html files still get a preview, but not images. It stopped working about the time when I installed an old version of Photoshop (7.0.1, the only one I had laying about for a quick job I needed it for...), and my efforts on Google seem to imply that it may be the culprit

While everything is working normal the virtual drive icons assigned to the virtual drives appear in the explorer view as a square with dots. Additionally now when I install a Kingston USB drive the system assigns a similar icon to it. I am running Win XP Pro with SP 2 and I have tried reloading the software but it didnt help. I also looked for all settings in the software but there are no settings for icons in the explorer view. The system is also configured with a DVD and a CDRW but their icons in the explorer view are ok

Mar 5, 2005In a previous thread, XP was scanning on boot. I worked the problem to death, converted all partitions to NTFS, and we finally gave up. We formated 120G C: and re-partitioned...went from approx. three 40G parts to one 50G (C:) and remainder approx 65G (E:). This install was done yesterday, and this morning, on first boot, it froze at a black screen (desktop is black), with a solid drive action light. Re-boots do not evoke a scandisk, but give a good boot to the desktop. I've tried to view the error log, but it won't show any of those tools...."not found", sys info, etc.

Jul 6, 2008I remember few days ago.. my kaspersky identified some system file as a trojan.. so it probably a misunderstanding when i was installing system mechanic. it got deleted.. and i have this automatic option to delete them after they are put in backup in kaspersky.
now whenever i open my pc, my desktop and taskbar and start menu,etc goes away after a few seconds! Now i rely on the task manager..
