Unable To Install IE7 On Even After Reinstall

Jan 9, 2007

I have tried numerous times to install IE7 but keep getting the error message "the following updates were not installed". The other piece of software that tries and fails to install at the same time is the Windows Malicious Software Removal tool. Windows update has verified with that my software is genuine (via Windows Genuine Advantage). Currently IE6 is installed on an OEM copy of XP with SP2 and all security patches. Firefox is my default browser. Has anyone experienced this and/or got a solution. p.s. This has been going on for a few weeks. Yesterday I re-installed XP from scratch as part of a system clean up and have been rebuilding everything but the problem of IE7 not installing is still there.

Unable To Auto Install / Reinstall Generic Device Drivers

Mar 2, 2008

I have a Sony RS-220 desktop w/ XP home w/ SP2 & all updates since that's unable to auto install generic device drivers. I discovered this when I tried plugging in a couple different USB flash drives & it would just stop at the found new hardware wizard. Running the wizard w/ "install the software automatically" & also enabling "also search windows updates" returns unable to find device driver. The USB flash drive was the only bang in device manager. I uninstalled the usb controllers, rebooted and amazingly the controllers wouldn't auto reinstall. Suspecting the behavior extended to more then just USBs/the chipset I uninstalled some unneeded devices (56k modem & 1394) & they also wouldn't auto reinstall.

I went to the sony website & strangely Sony doesn't list the chipset available for download w/ the other drivers I downloaded the chipset direct from intel & installed it but that didn't work either. I've tried many other things to no avail. Malware scans (spybot, AVG AV, rootkitrevealer)...all came up clean. I've tried a new admin user profile, cCleaner registry cleanup, resetting registry permissions w/ subinACL, setting related windows services to automatic, checkdisk /r. Another thing I thought about doing was uninstalling the PCI controller, but I think I recall that can get ugly. Ultimately the only thing that allowed me to get my usb controllers, usb hubs, modem, 1394, & usb drive working was to "install from a list or specific location" & "include this location in the search" C:WINDOWSinf. Does anybody have any idea how I can restore the functionality of generic drivers auto installing & not having to point to an INF directory? Any insight is greatly appreciated.

Unable To Reinstall?

Apr 24, 2006

I gave my old Dell Dimension desktop to my brother, who will be using it almost exclusively for internet browsing. I hadn't used it for about 2 years. When he went to set up the wireless internet, he was told by the tech guy that windows XP was corrupted, and I needed the original CD's that came with the computer.Of course I don't have these any more, and Dell won't send them to me b/c the licenses have expired. So I re-bought Windows XP, not through Dell (to save a few bucks).

Unable To Reinstall Windows

Dec 20, 2007

Problem: Cannot Reinstall Windows > Put Master CD in, loads files, then says "Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed on your computer" .BIOS does recognize the hardrive as hitachi 160 GB SATA hardrive and SATA is enabled.Windows Setup disk does not recognize hardrive.I have tried F6 during Windows Setup to load controller drivers but screen says "File iaStor.sys could not be loaded. Error Code is 14."Hardrive seems to work properly becuase I can load windows and do any non-network function. My Reason for ReinstallationRecently messed up my registries accidently concerning installation and uninstallation of AOL and no longer have networking LAN or wireless functions. So for me, "Reformat time." I wanted a clean install anyways. No other hardrives are present, nor are there any other partitions. Currently doing DiskCheck (stage 4 of 5) but so far the disk is not damaged and is normal. My Windows Setup Disk is official and I have tested other Windows setup disks with my laptop but none work.

Install Media Center - Reinstall CD

Jul 19, 2009

I am currently running Vista but have begun having screen freeze and other problems. I have pretty much decided to install Windows XP. My question is does Windows Media Center come automatically on the XP installation CD or is this something that is separate? I have the reinstall CD's for Vista and there is not a WMC CD with it so I wondered if it was on the OS CD itself.

How 2 Clean Install Without Having To Reinstall Other Programs

Dec 11, 2005

Does anyone know how to properly configure a multi-hard drive Windows XP Home PC with XP OS files on the boot hard drive (30 GB in my case) and all other program & data files on two separate partitions of a 160 GB drive, so that whenever my system starts slowing down, I can wipe the Windows OS drive clean & do a clean install of XP on it, without having to reinstall some 50+ and growing applications I have downloaded but don't have on CD or DVD?Someone I met in passing but didn't get the details from said this was how he had his PC set up, and that all you have to do is make a backup of your Registry files on the non-OS HD and just restore/reinstall the registry on the OS HD after clean installing XP on the OS HD. Microsoft tech support personnel I have asked about this say this is not something they support and they deny this is possible.

But, as I have run semi-weekly virus & malware scans using multiple products and deleted all of the suspicious files they find and am still experiencing increasingly slow and erratic system performance, MS told me I should do a clean install, after burning all of my downloaded program files to DVD and backing up all my data files (already being performed nightly to the 160 GB drive data files partition), then reinstall all drivers and programs off CDs & DVDs. I estimate this will take a good 8-10 hours every time I want to reinstall XP, which I consider an excessive drag on my productivity in my real business. Does anyone know whether the concept I outlined above is feasible, and if so, where can one find a succinct guide on how to implement it, including a clear map of what directories other than C:Windows any OS files are in, and recommendations for a good registry editor program?

Virus Cleaning - Unable To Reinstall The Printer

Aug 4, 2009

Recently my Dell Dimension 4600 became badly infected. Malwarebytes antimalware and Spybot Search and Destroy now declare my PC virus free, but I have one artifact of the infection. Control panel as well as my software no longer sees my HP8450 printer. This problem first appeared when I was infected, this did not occur during or after cleaning. HP's online troubleshooter does not solve the problem. Further, I am unable to reinstall the printer; I have the original install CD and when prompted, Windows install wizard doesn't recognize the files on the CD. Trying a version of the software downloaded from HP's website, the install sees the device but cannot complete the install. I can't uninstall the printer because Control Panel doesn't recognize it as being installed. The printer is connected via USB cable and all of my other USB devices (mouse, keyboard, external hard drive) all work as they should. The printer was fully operational before the virus infections (Virtumonde.prx and Win32.TDSS.rtk).

Old enough to be smarter, young enough to know better. No major changes made to computer in over 120 days, just a hard drive way over 6 months ago. Can new MB and CPU be installed without such drastic steps as needing to reinstall everything? At present running on Intel 933MHZ, 640 Ram.

BSOD Error/Unable To Re-install / New Install?

Dec 5, 2007

After suffering months of freezing PC and blue screens (primarily the dreaded kernel stack error. I have done tried all the recovery tricks from here and MS website, done chkdsk /f & /r repeatedly over four days without using the PC in between, and all the other stuff from here and Microsoft. Bought an expensive Reg cleaner and run it repeatedly. No luck. No recently installed soft or hardware. New Dell desktop. 1 year of trouble-free life until this. I now boot from the recovery XP CD (it includes SP2) to try to reformat the whole shebang and it gets as far as loading setup files OK, then as usual tries to start load windows installation and ... blue screen. STOP error 0x0000007B (OXF78D2524 OXC0000034, OX00000000, OX00000000).
Decided to buy a new HDD and install XP on that. (3 weeks from Dell!) and in machine. Old one disconnected. Tried installing XP from disk. It stalls at exactly the same moment as before (loads up preliminary files, gets to ""starting Windows" and then the dreaded blue screen with the same error message as before. 0X0000007B (OXF78D2524, 0XC0000034, 0X00000000, 0X00000000). So presumably not HD (although always good to have one). Have downloaded Memtest and run it for 24 hours. No RAM errors reported.

Unable To Install Any OS

Dec 17, 2005

I had some problems with my system that resulted in me wanting to format and reinstall Windows XP. I booted from the install CD and after the program loaded the drivers at the beginning, the program shut down during "Starting Windows" and I got a blue screen error. Your typical XP error, "Your computer has been shut down before any more harm is caused to it." and something about pci.sys and then a memory location at the bottom of the screen. I tried installing 2 different versions of Windows from 3 different CDs and all froze at the same with the same error. I also attempted to run a diagnostic program from the hard drive manufacturer (Seagate) which freezes whenever I run it (I get to a prompt but I'm unable to type anything). I was able to install Windows onto the hard drive fine when I hooked it into a friends' system but when I put the hard drive back in my system I got "Error loading the operating system." (I assume you need to install Windows on the system that will be using it? It ran fine when hooked into my friend's computer) So, here I am unable to load an OS onto my system and I have no clue as to why. My computer is a Dell Dimension 9100 P4 system.

Unable To Install Hd?

May 29, 2006

I've just recently lost an old HDD to mechanical fault/corruption and so invested in a new 250GB one to replace it [including a switch from FAT32 to the NTFS file system]. I've been through the standard process of installing my copy of Windows XP Home SP2 and it seemed to work fine at first. An important point to note is that my %homedrive% (boot drive), on which my copy of Windows is installed is I:. I'm not as knowledgable when it comes to booting and system files as I am in other areas, and so I need help. I realised this straight away but thought little of it and went on installing my required drivers that came on the other CD I got when purchasing my computer originally (separate drivers CD to the Windows installation disk). For my graphics card drivers (NVIDIA GeForce 5300 drivers) [both latest downloaded version and version from my drivers CD], the installation causes an error just as it begins to install the files/components/etc.:
Windows - No Disk
There is no disk in the drive. Please insert a disk into drive .
After multiple times of clicking any combination of the three options (Cancel; Try Again; Continue) I receive:
NVIDIA Windows 2000/XP Display Drivers
There is not enough space on drive C: to extract this package.
Please free up 20.28MB and click retry.
[Clicking retry tosses back the Windows - No disk error again which in turn tosses back the NVIDIA Windows 2000/XP Display Drivers error etc.]
At was when I first came across this I realised some programs/operations I may wish to run in future will obviously run into problems such as this. I was searching for an easy way to rectify the problem by changing my boot drive letter to C:, though realising that without a full reformatting and reinstallation of Windows this would most likely cause major boot errors and such, and if not, problems with associations in the registry and etcetera...[I did find an article in the Windows Knowledge Base explaining this could be done but my computer told me otherwise] I'm more than prepared to reformat and re-install... But I don't understand how a drive letter is assigned in the first place. If anyone could please take the time to refer me to a resource that will describe how or give an explanation as to how I've ended up with my boot drive as I: and how to rectify, I would be very grateful! [I'm guessing it's because it's the last piece of hardware that was inserted into my computer and I followed the standard proceedure for Installing windows... But I couldn't say for sure.
I've also consulted the customer support section of the NVIDIA site, also google and this forum's search feature with little luck.

Can Reinstall Help & Support Or Reinstall / Repair Win

Jul 23, 2005

My Help and Support stopped working about the same time I installed the free utility GhostScript / Gsview so that I could view postscript files. I tried posting a question on another usenet newsgroup, but the answer of: click on install on the C:windowsinfpchealth.inf file - resulted in a search for the file dataspec.xml in the C:windowsinfi386 directory - Unfortunately, such directory does not exist on my C: drive. Furthermore, the "K:I386" directory of my Original Win XP Home CD does not contain any file named "dataspec.xm_ or .xml".And beyond that, I ordered a new Win XP SP2 CD, which just now arrived by mail - and there is no "K:I386" directory on that CD, nor does the CD apparently contain any file called "dataspec" (including dataspec.*).Another effort toward resolution occurred via another usenet post I read, which suggested opening the XP command line feature and executing a system status command, that displayed enabled services - I used that method, and switched the Help and Support service off and then on again. Such action did not in-fact enable the Help feature (including, of course restart), despite the indication that the Help and Support service was enabled. I am, and have been, running a purchased-CD version of Win XP Home, with a downloaded SP2 revision (I have not installed the new Win XP SP2 CD). Basically, I want to find out the means and methods for enabling my Win XP SP2 Help and Support feature, that apparently has been disabled or otherwise rendered inoperative. Is a reinstall of Win XP possible and the best choice? What are the other options?
