I had 8mm tapes professionally transferred to discs. Now I want to transfer the video from my disc to my desktop so I can use one of the movie editing programs. I have Windows XP. I was guessing that I had to copy and paste? When I try this I get an error message stating Windows does not support this type of disc. It is a regular DVD disc so I am not sure what I am doing wrong.

Trouble watching video from one of my hard drives (XP). At first I thought it was a codec problem so I uninstalled and reinstalled the codecs but that never worked.
Then I tried watching video on the other hard drive and no problem there.
I confirmed that its a hard drive problem when I tried to copy one of the files from the problematic hard drive, it showed 30mins left where it normally takes 1-2mins.
I checked to see if the channel was in PIO mode but all are in DMA.
Trying to fix my friends computer thought I would be done in an hour or so but I ran into a retarded problem when trying to boot from the windows cd. Here is some information I know off the top of my head. If you have any input please let me know, I'm trying to get this done before tonight since its Friday

Instead of being the usual icons and black text, everything looked strangely shaded with blue and pink... They all still function properly, but look strange. Also the start menu at the bottom and all the selections under the start menu are the same way. Second; when I open Firefox and try to view videos, the video is covered in red lines and boxes, and is unviewable. The video is still playing, but so distorted that I can't make it out. i ran windows troubleshooting, and have been searching the internet for hours now to find a solution, but have had no luck. The only changes I have made to the computer that I can think of, was to delete some of the unnecessary folders in the My Documents folder. I didn't see anything that would have caused these issues.

This evening, I got the dreaded "not enough disc space to complete disc defragmenter" message. Suddenly tonight I'm showing only 2% free space on drive C. I went in and changed my System Restore percentage from 12% to 6%. Now I'm showing 6% free space (but still can't defrag).
I shouldn't have had to change my System Restore percentage tho. I'm sure that's not the culprit. Up until last night the C drive was nowhere near this full. Something's there tonight that wasn't yesterday. ...A whole LOT of something. The Defrag graph is showing a nearly FULL C drive with a LOT of red "fragmented" files"
I've been doing a bit of downloading, but after it's on the desktop (part of C), I move it to the D storage drive (which has a LOT of free space remaining).
Something's fishy. I'm no expert, but I'm thinking I need to find some type of application to tell me what's suddenly on that drive taking up all this space. Anyone have any helpful suggestions?
neither wmp 11 or roxio recognizes a blank disc. when i try to burn a disc (dvd or cd) both wmp 11 and roxio tells me to insert a blank disc. i have tried putting a disc in first, or wait for the program to tell me to insert disc but neither way works!:

I already used cd-bootable Knoppix to copy all documents i needed to rescue. At this point a complete Re-install would be great, but alas, no install disk came with this notebook, And i lost the recovery discs i made. I do NOT have any XP disc available.How can I begin a re-install or similiar from the Hardisk with no Discs?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI get a little confused by terms like restore vs recovery, which are often interchanged incorrectly IMO -and then there are the terms bootable disc and startup disc, which can also get confusing - and I have seen other terms used also.
please explain exactly what you mean by the "bootable XP CD". I have a new XPsp2 home edition pc, and I had a millennium before that (which I made a "startup disc" for in add/remove programs - so I guess a startup disc is yet another term for boot disc - it was only a 3-1/2" diskette (less than a meg), and it would get my millennium to boot by typing "scanreg /restore" at a prompt that you eventually came to.
For my XP, I immediately made a Compaq "recovery dvd" (it took 2-dvd's) utilizing the "Compaq recovery cd-dvd creator" in start/programs/pc tools. This dvd (can also use cd's but it takes 8 or 9 cd's I believe) contains everything that is on the pc (from the factory), and which is also in the system recovery partition D:. There is also something called a "Recovery Tools CD", which I did not burn, since it did not seem necessary, after
reading about it in the "troubleshooting and system recovery guide" that came with my Compaq. I will burn that one to, if you can explain what it will do, that I can't ultimately achieve by using the "recovery dvd". The manual said that one of the things the "recovery tools cd" did was to remove the system recovery partition (drive D), so you could use it - but I'm sure there is another way of doing that from within the pc once you got it running using the recovery dvd - am I right - I've never messed around with partitioning, since I have no need to.
My new XP did not come with any "bootable CD" per se, and I made the "recovery dvd", as stated above. So please shed some light on what the "bootable XP CD" is that you refer to (because you said that a "restore Cd is really overkill" - I assume you mean the "recovery CD" that I mentioned). Also please provide your comments on the "recovery tools CD", and any other comments you have on the various terminologies I have mentioned above.
After putting the windows XP CD in and rebooting, now whenever the computer is restarted I get the blue screen that says unable to find disc press F3 to exit setup. How do I stop this so computer will reboot normally?

Recently I was playing a game, when my screen froze. I then shut my computer down to restart it, used it a few times (in 4-bit safe mode), then after I shutdown again, I cant log back in... it just freezes and the screen flashes, I cannot boot into my computer setup (default f2) or into safe mode (default f8), however I can run the XP cd and get into the recovery console, is there any way that I can change the boot sequence from the recovery console? The screen is dotted with a bunch of dots up and down the screen in columns, and is in 4-bit video mode.

I have managed to put video footage onto my PC from a video cassette (by plugging my VCR into the TV aerial socket). The video footage is saved on my PC as .mpg files & when I open them, they play fine on Windows Media Player.When I import them on to Windows Movie Maker, they are recognised as video footage and I am able to put them into the collections as video. However, for some reason, when I drag them onto the timeline, they go onto the audio line & I can't get them to go on the video line, so when I play it, the sound plays but there is no picture. I have tried saving them as .AVI files but that makes no difference
I have window XP SP2 installed on my laptop. I also use InterVideo WinDVD Creator for video editing. Recently when I try to import video file into my application, my laptop, processing percentage goes up to 98%, and the application just freezes up. I also tried the Microsoft movie maker software and I get the same result. I was wondering if I need to reinstall the application or there is something that my laptop is missing. Use fine, then after its been on for awhile it goes black again. Weird. I have the newest drivers and all the windows updates loaded. It just keeps going out. View 1 Replies View RelatedMy kid just disabled the video adapter on his XP Pro machine (Compaq, PII, on-board video) and now the initial Win XP screen comes up then goes dark once it gets mostly through the boot-up. It won't do any different in safe mode and even installing an AGP video card didn't get me around this. Short of reloading XP, is there a fix for this? Also tried reloading default BIOS settings just in case, no change.

I finally talked to a tech person that asked me if I had another disc and I have an older sp2 disc. He said to install that but when I put in the key for my new disc it does not work with my older disc. I finally put in my old key and it worked fine. Here is a video to show you what's going on at startup, When it happened I was working in Cubase. I'd just reset the audio driver, and it started doing like in the video. After a little bit, the signal cuts out completely. It's not the monitor, I've checked with a spare and it's the same. I don't have another video card around at the moment, but I'm wondering if it's likely to be an issue with the hardware, or software/virus type stuff.The computer is XP, 2gb ram, nVidia Geforce card (sorry, can't recall which one) etc. Incidentally the card itself looks fine, ie it doesn't look like it's shorted or anything.
