My old system hasn't been powered on for about a year. Problem was the onboard video failed replaced it with a video card from another system (riva TNT) and bought some memory system wouldn't boot, determined that the memory was bad Now the system booted but win2K wouldn't work. No problem I have XP now. After multiple error during the xp install I finally got through it.only the computer will only boot in safe mode. Initially thought it was a hardare conflict so I booted in safe mode with networking and systematically cleared all the yellow.

Im new, so bear with me please. The problem is on my old Sony Viao Model PCG-6H4L XP. I wanted to start fresh and the recovery system for windows gives me only a limited number of dates. I thought that the Viao recovery would do the job.I was wrong. I haven't checked recent forums about problems with this, so I went ahead and broke my laptop. Before the Recovery system starts, my laptop says, with a black background.

The system can be restored by using the Startup CD and pressing R for recover, but I do not have any cd. The only one I have it the recover cd, but it is my understanding that if I use the recovery cd that I will erase everything from my computer and I can not do this.I tried to read the other threads about the same problem, but to be honest I do not understand them and I just do not have the startup cd - maybe it is the same as the recovery cd?

THEN COMPUTER WOULDNT START- tried the two options it gave me but no go back to same black screen with boot options-- regualar- last working point- safe mode etc. no go.
At this point I did a full System Recovery again and downloaded virus protection again.

I'm running a Dell XPS 600 with Windows XP Professional Media Center Edition. Well, OK, it's not really running.I used System Restore to return my PC to a point about six weeks ago when the system was more stable. The PC rebooted, and now it won't boot any more due to a missing/corrupt CONFIGSYSTEM file.It won't boot from either of my CD drives, either. I've used the boot Setup to alter the boot sequence but that doesn't help, the system just doesnt recognize those drives during boot. For this same reason, I've been unable to access the Recovery Console.

I tried to start my computer and I suddenly received the following message:"Windows 2000 could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: WINNT/ SYSTEM32/CONFIG/SYSTEMced startup options for Windows, press F8." I'm not sure how to fix this problem. I have tried to press F8 --but nothing happens. I'm afraid a virus has destroyed the data on my hard drive.

So my sister gets hold of a computer in the house and ruins it, and here is the dilemma I am facing: I turn on the computer and right away i come to this message....
Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
windowssystem32configSYSTEM
Attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the Original CD-ROM. Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair.
So I enter the cd rom and press 'r' for repair, I choose C:windows, however before it can begin to repair it asks me for an 'Administration Password' which I have no idea of after many attempts.
I do not want to have to format the pc since I have some very important files on it. Any help is appreciated.

The computer I'm writing about is my sister's home-built PC, running XP Home Edition on an Nforce4-A939 motherboard. *May not be verbatim as Windows is installed in Swedish. She tells me that shortly prior to this happening, the computer was transported by car for about 20 minutes, after which she set it up, played Sims for about an hour, downloaded a couple of patches and switched it off (normally). She then restarted it a day later, left it on without using it for about an hour, then switched it off again (normally). When she booted it up again, the above error appeared. She only uses the computer for playing Sims.

A little over a week ago, my XP (HE) began to visibly slow down. For example, on startup the desktop icons would have the generic look and then slowly refresh one by one. And another example, when opening a program, it firsts displays partially and then the whole window comes up. First, I loaded Task Manager in an effort to see if any processes or applications were taking an unusual amount of resources. Nothing that gave me a hint there. Next I disabled indexing for searches, 'cause I thought maybe that was slowing things down (though I had indexing on prior to this and it never slowed things down like I'm seeing in my examples above). No joy there. Then I thought that maybe my prefetch files were gone and that was causing this, but that wasn't the case. I've scanned for spyware and viruses, but no joy there either (for once I was hoping some malware would show up). My swap file is fixed and defragmented, so that doesn't seem to be it either. MS came out with a bunch of updates on the 14th, so I thought maybe it was one of them, and have been removing one by one, but still no joy there. I've disabled all polling that some programs do for updates (like Adobe Reader and Java), thinking that perhaps that was interrupting the display . . . but no joy there either. I did update to Java Version 6 Update 10, which is listed as a Release Candidate but is still really a beta, right around the time those MS Updates came out and when my slow problem first started, so my next step will be to either go back to Update 7, or just uninstall Java completely (I really don't use it, and only have need of it when I do the Secunia online scan for security update info). Since beta's are essentially unfinished software, I'm thinking that maybe Update 10 could be doing it. I'm reluctant to bash MS Updates, but they have been known to screw things up. However, on all the searches I've done I don't see anything about those updates slowing things down, so I'm thinking that the MS Updates are probably not the cause.

My friend's computer is getting some pretty weird things going on. She says that the System 32 window will appear every time she boots up her machine. It started after her husband got caught surfing the web for porn. An AdAware scan didn't fix it and going to a previous Windows System Restore point didn't work either.

A guy in the office was transferring images from his digital camera to his PC when the screen froze. He now can't start up his OS unless in safe mode. I've tried "last known good configuration", used an old restore point, checked for clashes in Device Manager, done a diagnostic startup using msconfig and still no joy. The machine is out of warranty and we can't find the recovery disks anywhere. Also, because the software was preinstalled there's no original disc to do an XP repair job on it. What more can I try?

Came home to a black screen, so i turned it off via power button. tried to turn it back on, got as far as windows xp logo and then it restarted itself. That restart it took me into dos mode saying windows couldn't start because of named a few reasons like new hard/software. Gave the options to start in safe mode, safe mode with networking, safe mode custom (or something like that), starting windows in the last configuration that worked, or start windows normally.I tried them all, it won't start. It simply keeps rebooting and showing me the same message.

this problem for a while now and ive been trying everything i can think off. Basically when i start the computer up the windows login screen freezes. I have to press ctrl + alt + delete to get the login box to come up, and i can login that way. That's fine just a bit annoying . Secondly, When i look through my files in windows, even click a file on desktop or browse the internet, the taskbar and my desktop will freeze. I can move my mouse, but cant click anything, icons, start menu, right click - nothing. To get it back i bring up task manager and close it, then i can click the taskbar etc, i have no idea why that works i dont close explorer.exe or anything . I've ran anti-virus scans with avast and nod32 (i only have avast installed), anti-spyware scans with Spybot and superantispyware and nothing was found. I've disabled startup programs with msconfig, defragmented and updated video card drivers. but it still freezes. Specs are beside my forum name, and im using xp home.

Sometimes the loading screen does come on but always freezes at XP loading screen and goes blank. Most of the time the screen stays blank when start button is pushed. Tried going through other monitor but doesn't still work.

hello fellow CNET members, I am in a fix.I have a Dell Dimension E510 running on Media Center Edition 2005. I also have a certificate of authenticity with the XP key on it. This past thursday, I restarted my computer, and it gave me the good ole Windows did not start correctly and gave me an option to start in Last Known Good Config, Normal, or Safe Mode(s). I entered Last Known Good Config, and then it restarted, and then it came up again. It seems I cannot boot into the OS at all. I have been on my old WinME(!) system looking up solutions, and some, if not all of the suggestions have been to Repair it, etc. However cheap ole Dell has not provided me with a XP CD, and I am unable to access the i386 files in the systems. Boot Disks will work, however they only setup the system for a CD install. The BIOS is fine, i believe, as a Ubuntu CD will work fine. There are some vital files that are on that hard drive, and i can't access them. All the other computers I have are not as updated as the E510, so the SATA hard drive will not connect to the ATA motherboard (Dimension 4100)as a slave.
