System Updates Wont Load: Freezes During Installation?
Mar 16, 2008
I can not get new windows updates! I have been every where to solve this problem! My update icon showed up, so I clicked on it like I usually do, but it would not start! So, I went to start, clicked on windows update there! The page opened, but it was small and sometimes it would not fully open! It would freeze half way through the process! So I rebooted, went directly to microsoft updates, sometime I made it there sometimes I did not!

I come across very strange problem. Last week my machine running XP Home was infected by 'Boot.Mebroot' virus which curropted my boot configurations and my machine was getting restarted upon loading windows. I tried all the options but no use. Then I re-install (Upgraded to) XP Professional with complete installation without reformat and updated to latest SP3. It went fine, I ran Symantec and found the bugger and kicked off from my machine. Then I started Windows Live update as I want to bring my PC to latest patches. All the updates got installed without an error (about 58 updates most of them were security update, SP3 and IE8). As soon as I restart my machine it shows the same behaivour. It get restarted. I Repaired my XP professional three time now.
Why I am accusing MS XP Update for all this because Last night everything was running absolutly perfect, I started the update it showed me 58 updates. All update gone successfully. After finishing the the updates I simply restarted my machine and it failed again and restarting again and again. It shows me F8 boot options and I tried all but same. So I repaired this morning again. I tried the 'fixmbr' command in recovery console and it displays the dangerous message that 'This machine boot have some problem' but if you ruin FIXMBR you might loose the partition and stuff so I didn't run it as I have very important data on my disk.

Well its Windows x64, but that shouldn't make much of a difference... right? Erk. :?
Anyway, i boot into the install enviroment and go through the usual fluff to get the os loading, and XP tells me it is at the "Preparing Installation" phase, and is "Installing Devices" with 34 minutes to go.
Now this is NOT 34 minutes. It's not going anywher. It's not frozen exactly, i still have mouse control, can shift + F10 into cmd etc, but the install just isn't moving along :
Please help. Again, the usual beer to the problem solver

I turned my computer off last night and when i went to turn it on this morning, windows wouldn't load. It went to the screen that says you can start it in safe mode or normal mode or any of the other ones. But when i choose any mode the little white bar at the bottom of the screen loads, but then it freezes. Or if i choose safe mode it floods my screen with a bunch of command lines then freezes. I need a little help here guys because i am baffled. I know this has happened to me before but i do not remember how to fix it.

I started having issues with IE8 although I do use Firefox for browsing, but still have to do my Windows updates and such. Then I ran a utility download to clean up PC and registry and lost the ability to do updates, and can't install Windows products, and my disk drives have driver issues. No, I did not backup or do restore point and I have tried my restore points to no avail.

I've formatted my hdd using hirens boot cd, partition magic. xp install starts, goes through "setup is loading files", gets to "setup is starting windows" and stops, all activity stops (hdd, cd), full silence. if i'm not mistaking, eula comes next and F8 to continue. i left it for 8 hours and waited, no result. same thing happens with vista - goes through loading files, i get a screen with that green line going from left to right and goes on and on and on forever.I've tried with 2 different xp cds, one xp64 cd and vista dvd. nothing.linux ubuntu installs without any problems.i've tried erasing MBR with acronis disk director suite (hirens boot cd) and with DOS line "fdisk.exe /mbr", but every time my installation freezes.

I have been trying to complete a clean install of XP and it gets stuck at 34 minutes remaining. I have read that many people have had this problem and I thought that I found the solution in a forum. Someone said that when it gets stuck to remove the cd, open a cmd prompt and type setupapi.log. Then review the end of the log looking for a .inf extension which will be the device causing the problem. Then it says to close the notepad and go to c:/windows/inf this command doesn't work. can anyone help me? It says that I need to delete the file containing the .inf extension

To start, when I try to play an .avi file, real player and windows media player both encounter a fatal error. Thinking there may have been a windows update I went to update.microsoft.com to get updates. I was able to download all of the updates, but I could not install any of them. I tried to install them via express and custom updates on the website, via automatic updates, and virtually every other method I could think of. After researching the problem I came across similar problems with an array of solutions, including trying in safe mode, running sfc /scannow, uninstalling and reinstalling .net, shutting off and turning back on both automatic updates and cryptographic services, changing .dll files (lccwiz & pidgen), renaming the Software Distribution folder, downloading one update at a time, and other things that I can't even begin to think of at this moment, obviously with no success, as well as running SpyBot, AdAware, and Norton.

Upon rebooting, after installation of a new firewall, I denied access to a flurry of Windows access requests until I could find out what they were I am now worried that some or many, may have had something to do with the automatic Windows updates. Everything is working fine so far, but how can I check to see that I haven't missed any updates. If access was blocked, would they automatically be re-sent?I am still trying to identify all the processes in my firewall log that I
have marked to "Ask".Secondary, unrelated question, while cleaning up my system before this installation, I found 9MB of files in the TEMP folder under my D&S, LOCAL

Have read many threads on this and other sites and tried everything suggested (except swap out CD drive - don't have a working older drive to try). This PC is at least 5-6 yrs old - has original Hitachi CD/DVD Drive (reader, not writer). Have unplugged ALL devices from back of computer. Just has (1)internal CD/DVD drive and (1) internal LS120 floppy drive left installed.Something happened to computer - Windows XP Pro would no longer run. Tried re-installing Windows XP Pro. using OEM CD with hologram. Attempted to do a repair install, instead of a fresh install - hoping to be able to keep all programs/devices intact.During installation, computer got stuck on: "The file 'asms' on Windows XP Pro Serv Pack1 CD is needed" Type the path where the file is located and click OK""Copy files from: Global RootDeviceCDRom0I386."The screen is locked, and I can not type or change anything. Can NOT change the path. Can not hit SHIFT F10 to get to a DOS prompt.

the S3 sleep state to work on the Tyan Thunder K8N motherboard running WindowsXP Pro x64? When I check my sytem from within Windows, it only says it supports S1 and S4 sleep states... I have the most recent motherboard bios and all other 64-bit updates installed... but for whatever reason, no utility, test programs or even Windows itself sees that this motherboard supports the S3 sleep state. It's a logo'd desktop motherboard, so it is supposed to support S3, but I can't for the life of me get WinXP Pro x64 to recognize that it does.

In response to this I attempted to use System Restore. This failed, for some reason after selecting the restore date, clicking next did nothing. I then decided to go on a deleting spree, removing all unnecessary folders, programs etc. Somewhere along the line I must not have been paying attention and deleted the i386 folder. Of course, all hell broke loose and I couldnt even log into any users be it safe mode or not (I got automatically logged out).
Now to the real problem: The setup gets to 34 minutes remaining and encounters some problems while installing devices. A number of pop up messages appear, After that last pop-up, the keyboard and mouse promptly freeze, and a final pop-up appears replacing the italics line with "Conexant D850 56K V.9x DFVc Modem". Unfortunately I now cant click yes or no, and therefore cant continue with the setup.

I have a Seagate Barracuda ATA IV model ST380021A. Don't know if it's SATA or not. I have a SOYO SY-P4VTP M/B. After I do a clean/new install on a formatted drive, (I even installed the SATA drivers that came w/ the mobo just in case) the computer freezes on reboot after the initial installation where it says "Setup will continue after reboot" or something like that. @ the bootscreen with the logo, the bluish bar scrolls a couple of times and freezes. Does anyone know why? I tried installing at a friends house and it worked fine so I know it's not a harddrive error but I place it in mines and it doesn't work so I create a new install and same problem.. I know it's not a temp issue since it's running < 100 F. THis is a genuine copy of XP. Just in case I used my friends.

For several weeks now I haven't been able to download/update Windows updates. I have been working with Microsoft Tech Support (via the telephone)for several days now and we haven't been able to correct the problem(s). My question is... can I use the Windows Installation disk to "fix" any problems my machine is having with the downloads/updates? Is there a "fix" option on the Windows disk and am I at risk in using it? I don't want to lose anything on my desktop because it is the way I want it at this time.

My computer is only about 4 months old and I do not have it set to receive automatic updates. It seemed, with my last computer, the updates created more problems than they were worth. Does anyone have an opinion on how important it is to get these updates or am I just as well off not receiving them? The last time I checked to see what updates were available it appeared Microsoft even said that some of them could create problems.

I shut off the computer and turning it back on couldn't boot up windows. It gave the windows wasn't shut down properly and I tried the normal restart option and it would just give a black screen with a blinking _ and then nothing happens. Tried loading in safe mode but it gets to mup.sys then "Press Esc to cancel SPTD.sys" flashes below and whether I press Esc or let it be, nothing happens after that.
I tried popping in the windows xp disc that came with the laptop, boot from disc, it starts up but then after loading everything, it then says "Windows is starting up" the disc stops spinning then nothing happens. I tried popping in a windows vista disc and it says "Windows is loading files" with a progress bar, when it fills up, I get stuck with a blank black screen the disc stops spinning and then nothing happens.

The my computer window instantly opens with all the correct icons displayed on the lest (view system information add remove programs change a setting...) but it shows no drives and I cannot click on anything. If I hit control alt delete it is reported as not responding but after about 45 seconds the rest of the icons show up. I open control pannel and try to open the system folder and nothing happens. I tried running nortons system works windoctor but after the cd launches it freezes. After about 3 hours of working on it I gave up and reinstalled windows ( i did the windows repair so I didn't lose program files and such, i did not re-initialize). After re-installing everything was going fine until last night. The same exact thing is occuring again. Ive attempted running Ad-aware and its locking up after it finds a few files, I have no clue what its finding since its locking up. Ive tried booting in safe mode but it locks up at mup.sys. Their is also no internet connection IE or Firefox can find but when I open the network connections folder it says that I am connected. Im wondering if its a bad HDD or if I've got some delayed action virus or something. Neither seems to likely to me since if it was the HDD when i ran a HDD scan (in dos from the win repair cd) it comes across as fine and the virus would have to be a delayed action one or something since it keeps hitting almost exactly a week after the problems occur.

First my computer was cutting off in the middle of any program. I decided to delete everything on the drive and reformat it and reload windows xp. While trying to load windows xp it would load the set up but when going to load files it locked up everytime. I tried also loading windows 98, 95 and they too locked up. At one point it said I had a virus in my boot sector and at another time it said I had a virus in my RAM. I got a program called PC Beginner to help partition my drive and redo the MBR. I can partition the drive and format it but windows still doesn't load. Now I wonder if there is a problem with the mother board and I have a dual bios board, I was wonder if there is a program loaded in the dual bios that may somehow causing my problem. If so what can be done to clear the problem? How can I get windows reloaded?

About 5 years ago me and my Brother were given identical laptops Dell Inspiron 1501s, the first thing I did with mine was install World of Warcraft which it managed easily and even ran relatively well. However my laptop became so burdened with viruses that it can no longer be logged onto without freezing anywhere between 5 - 40 seconds so it's hard to do anything about it, also it's a little embarrasing to ask for help as most of the viruses were caused by... How shall I put this, websites of ir-reputable nature! This happened about a year ago and just before this had happened I had uninstalled World of Warcraft and quit. But now I have come to start again on my Brother's laptop identical to my own which he no longer uses but there's a problem being that there's not enough memory I have literally trawled forums and websites to clear as much off as I can, I have removed basically every programme, deleted my Brother's account, ran every disc cleaner under the sun and defragmented the hard drive. This has given me a measley 3 gigs so I'm now sittig on 7 gigs of memory.

I was playing Dragon Age when the game freezed horribly. It displayed flickering green dots all across my screen and I had to manually restart my pc. When I came back into windows XP, the only thing I saw were large black and white rectangulars all across my screen. So I decided to let it rest for 30 min before trying again. When I did that, the black & white rectangulars were gone and I could do everything normal again. Except for gaming. When I tried Dragon Age, it crashed again the same way. After another 30 min, I tried another game (a hl2 mod, which doesn't tax the system that hard) and it froze again after a while (say 2 minutes), but my screen didn't display the strange rectangulars anymore

Im trying to fix my computer that ive had for a long time. Last week I noticed during my computer log on when asked to press ctrl alt del to logon, when i push it the computer would freeze. I tried using different keyboards both usb and ps2 with no luck. So as a last resort I tried a system repair. The system repair will load all the way untill it asks for me to enter my cd key, as soon as i push a key to enter it, the system freezes again, However the text indicator ( | ) is still flashing.
I use this computer for my business and have sensitive data and programs within the harddrive ( and no backup ). Is there anything I can do that wont resort to a full system format?
Note: the keyboard works when navagating BIOS
