A while ago my computer started running very slow. In task manager is says svchost.exe and rtvscan.exe are taking up lots of memory. I've run the basic scans like spybot, and defragmented, but nothing really seems to make a difference.

View 14 Replies View Relatedcomputer has been lagging like crazy so opened up task manager to see what was taking up my memory and cpu. i didn't see anything but then i noticed i had like 6 svchost.exe processes running. i looked it up and microsoft stated that svchost can run multiple times at once. the problem is one of them is taking up like 50,000 KB more memory than any of the others and this particular is also taking up a crapload of my cpu off and on as well
View 4 Replies View RelatedOne of them "svchost.exe (SYSTEM)" is eating up anywhere from 8,000-18,000K of memory, which is a lot more than it did previously and the other"svchost.exe (NETWORK SERVICE)" can eat up to 99% of my CPU at times while running in the same range of memory usage as the aforementioned process.
View 10 Replies View RelatedSVCHOST.EXE / SYSTEM is duplicated in running processes , and it's using all my CPU usage on startup/logon (this process takes several minutes).Never mind the same process for 'local service', and 'network service'. They don't consume CPU usage - see attached.This started when I upgraded to Defender, from MS Antispyware. To upgrade, I had to authenticate the OS , install SP 2 , then install the new app . Took over an hour I noticed too many new things changing in the appearance (and don't like Defender), so I did a sys restore for the day before the install. No problems at all, 'til the next day. Slow boot, slow authentication for logon, etc.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI have recently become annoyed at the high memory usage of the svchost.exe process. I have 8 of these services running at the moment. I havent had reason to complain until recently when they seem to be using more memory than necessary. I might just be over reacting here but perhaps someone can verify it for me. I have included a hijackthis log at the bottom.my system is running WindowsXP SP2, Asus K8VSE deluxe, Athlon 64 3200, 1.75 GB RAM, updated via drivers and windows updates (except one that just came in and I havent done yet).These just seem like too much memory for these. I have check at blackviper and didnt really see a lot of things I could turn off. I could be wrong though.

I NEED urgent help, not THIS computer but the person I live with's computer is EXTREMELY slow, things take up to 10-20 minutes to open sometimes, it takes at least 15 minutes to start up or shut down, everything lags, we've tried EVERYTHING, virus scanning, spyware, malware, cleaning the registry, defraging the registry and harddrive, cleaning up, EVERYTHING, anytime you shut down after applying some sort of setting it says it's saving the settings and then you start it back up and it acts like it never saved it, it goes back to the OLD CRAPPY settings, puts every error back on that the program found, recently the boot.ini has become corrupt or invalid, there are two hard drives with plenty of space and we've had this problem for a couple of years! We can't figure out what to do, we both have the same computer, bought it at the same time, mine runs like a charm but their's does not at all, the cpu usage is sky high when you aren't doing anything and sometimes it is 0% when you ARE doing stuff. There is about 10 or more svchost.exe's running, two under a seperate username and none of which we can stop. There are diagnostic lights on the back BUT anytime there is anything wrong with the lights we look in the manual and on the offical website and NO ONE HAS THE LIGHT COMBONATION THAT WE DO!! It's a Dell Dimension 2400, right now it has both 512MB and a 128MB RAM memory stick, we can't upgrade the memory or it fails and starts beeping, Windows XP Home Edition,
View 11 Replies View RelatedTo all those with the ability to step up to the plate and knock this one out of the park (steroids permitted):Shortly after starting windows xp home edition, a process named "svchost.exe" starts and ties up 50% of my cpu usage. The process will not end on its own so I open the task manager and end the process. I've been running Norton Anti-Virus 2004, Ad-aware SE Personal, and Spybot Search & Destroy. I update these programs daily, yet they show no unwanted guests on my computer. How do I get rid of this booger.

I have to terminate wuauclt.exe manually (through End Process in Task Manager) in order for the 'Commit Charge' to return to late 300/early 400M figures. If my 'Commit Charge' is 5XXM or above, if I plug any USB devices Windows XP won't recognise them. I have to terminate memory consuming programs (e.g. Firefox), restoring the Commit Charge to 4XXM, then Windows XP will recognised any USB devices I plug in. However, if I plug any USB devices right at the beginning when I turn on the laptop, I won't encounter any problems. Why is this?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a Dell Dimension 4300 PC at work running Windows XP Pro SP2 (1.5 Ghz/256MB RAM) on a domain network with Windows Server 2003. We are running Symantec Endpoint Protection Version 11.0.2000.1567. This users PC runs very slow and freezes. When I go into Task Manager, I see the Rtvscan.exe process spiking at 60-80% CPU usage. No other PC's on the network seem to be doing this. I googled this to death and other than increasing her RAM, is there any other solution? I ran a virus scan, and spyware scans and did not find anything.

svchost.exe -- application error the instruction at "0x745f2780" reference memory at "0x00000000". the memory could not be 'read'
I have tried numerous fixes and it will not work. I tried turning off AU and manually installing the updates but it just hangs up. It is only the Office 2003 updates that did not update.
I just finished cleaning my sisters' computer from various trojans, etc...atleast all of those I could find. I have scanned with Adaware, Spybot, AVG, and Bazooka, and installed Sygate firewall. I was wondering if there is anything that I should delete from my hijack log.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI recently reformatted due to slowing of my computer and things have been great, playing alot of Battlefield 2142 and it looks amazing on my rig, however today I was playing and things were going excruciatingly show, and eventually just stopped. I had to unplug it and turn it back on. I noticed problems immediately after XP loaded up and got on my user. Resolution was to a minumum, my AIM, Steam, and just about everything crashed and gave me the error report message. Everytime I load AIM or Firefox(IE too), it gives me an error report screen, however there really isn't a problem, i just move the error window to the corner of my screen and I'm able to browse freely.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI dled a game and installed (gta VC) and also installed "the all seeying eye" and "MTA version(i dont know)", during playing the game i encountered this massive lag/frame-skip every/approx 10 secs, i exited the game and found that the lag/frame-skip still continued, i reseted my computer and to find it was resloved, where after about 30-40 mins the continous lag came back, its starts of as small frameskips to over a long period of time (1 hour) unbearable frame skip as if the computer is running at full. I did a virus scan, adware scan, spy doctor scan, cws shredder scan and a hijack this scan. Only Spyware doctor found 700 things that it removed the most threatening thing a browser changing trojan/hijack thingy,still my comp has the constant lag/frameskip.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI noticed that when you use either the Control Panel Add/Remove Programs or an uninstaller to remove software lots of bits get left behind. For example, if you RUN SERVICE.MCR you will find files in the Registry. Also, IE7 browser add-ons. Some of these items can't be deleted - only disabled. I have run into problems with all this "regsam" before - from start-up to shut-down problems. Registry Cleaners don't detect and delete them either.
View 4 Replies View Relatedit enters a kind of loading spasm which can go on for several minutes, making this repeating, rhythmic pattern of loading noises, before everything goes back to normal. Foxit Reader and McAfee Security Center are the worst, but right after booting most programs cause it, as does merely logging on which now takes about ten minutes. It doesn't exactly make the computer unusable but it's incredibly frustrating. Outside of the spasms it's perfectly normal.
I haven't installed anything recently, except for a demo of Penumbra: Black Plague which I've since uninstalled . I have very little free hard disk space (1.5 GB of a 60 GB disk) but that's been the case for some time, while this only began a few days ago. I've done full scans with Ad-Aware, Spybot and McAfee which turned up nothing more than a few tracking cookies. I'll paste a HijackThis log if someone reckons it'd be of use, but I'm uncertain whether this is a malware problem (hence my not posting this in the malware section). It's occurred to me to just format and reinstall windows, but perhaps there's a likely simpler solution?
Windows Installation : Various files cannot be copied and/or not copied correctly. Giving blue screen of [enter] retry, [esc] skip or F3 to abort installation. Files constantly failing to copy : cyycoins or something, lots of .chm files, too many to mention. Curious thing is, same problems for both optical drives and both HDDs, varying both for many installations. Eventually I held down [enter] and the files went in, well some didn't but Windows booted fine.
Warhammer Dawn of War : Winter Assault. wh40k.cab is corrupt. Changed optical drives during installtion, installed fine. Could be hardware issue with my cdrom, Same game, when playing will crash to desktop. No error message sometimes, no indication of crash (no freezing or warning sounds or stuttering, just flat out BOOM, .exe gone. Sometimes error message appears to send error report, sometimes doesn't. Occurs while under load
I thought this could again be CDROM issue, with the copy protection not keeping the game running because disc wasnt read right.
Mozilla Firefox : Dunno really. Loaded it up to access webpage. Some survey appeared, then program locks up for maybe 10 seconds then crashes with firefox.exe has encountered error Windows built in message appears. Firefox is unable to load up again due to missing/corrupted .dll file error. Cannot page_read or something. I forget the whole error message. Guess coulda been important to save it to post here.
Whole system reboot. Idle one time, machine just goes down, then starts up again. Flat reboot. Didnt touch any buttons, then once in Windows 'recovered from serious error' message appears. Tells me after sending report its a device driver issue. Changed My Computer options to give the Blue Screen of Death so that the driver is named, nothing, just page_file_read or errors along those lines I know nothing about.
Don't know what is wrong. Hardware issue could be Optical Drive. But then again I have 2 drives, and the errors ocur no matter which one I use, same with the Hard Disks. I'm stumped. Its quite a huge issue. I have nothing on the drives, I backed all my stuff up before formatting after starting to get errors 1-4. I got these errors before format and immediately after. So would indicate Hardware issue would it not Can it be a BIOS problem? Or wiring, neither of which i have altered or been brave enough to look at.
Fairly new laptop - HP Pavilion - slow startup - not overly slow - would just like things to speed up. I do have a lot of large applications on here that I want to keep because I use them. Anyway - if someone don't care to look over my HJT file here it is and will take constructive critisim and suggestions for speeding this thing back up.

This is really annoying because I always have to click the expanding buttons at the bottom of the start menu - see bellow. Is there anyway to have the start menu contsantly expanded by default so I don't have to keep manually expanding it?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to reformat an Acer Laptop 120GB hard drive that had problems before with VISTA so I'm using my copy of Win XP Pro, (I own the Volume disk, and have used it several times with no problems). When I try and do a reformat it hangs at 80%.I've used MEMtest86, no erorrs, I've tried Ultimate bootCD, no probs, I've tried SystemRescueCD, no help. I ran CHKDSK from a DOS prompt no problems. I ws going to replace the MBR but it says that I might not be able to access my drive if it doesn't work...is that true ?Right now I'm trying a MS-DOS FORMAT from a command prompt and its taking forever. After 20 minutes its only at 1%.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI am trying to upgrade the RAM memory on my Gateway MX3230 notebook. It presently has 256 MB and I would like to upgrade to 1 GB. I have checked the Gateway website and and upgrade to 1 GB is acceptable. I purchased a memory module from Kingston which was listed as being compatible with my laptop. When I tried installing the module, the computer will not start, nothing but black screen. It's as thought there is no memory at all. I tried re-installing the module making sure it was inserted in as far as it will go, still no luck. There is no settings in bios that I can see that would prevent the acceptance of this module

With task mamanger, I can see there are many IEXPLORE.EXE running. But, I already close all of them.
I ran 3 ad-ware, spybot, MS antispyware. Removed all the spyware by those 3 spyware detector.
