whenever i formatt my pc and install new windows i find out that i still have the contents of the older windows in the drive in which i install the new windows
2)when i install the norton 360 after formatting it firsts gives no problems but after completing installation it says some error has occured and i need to uninstall and install again
I tried re-installing Windows XP (for reasons I which not to explain), and I when I did, I got the following error message:The version of Windows on this CD is older than on this computer. Installation could be complete.What do I do?

I asked for help in an earlier thread, and got some helpful advice, but now I have a new problem. (I'm not sure I should be starting a new thread on this; but it does seem like a separate issue to me.) About two years ago I had the Geek Squad in to rid my computer of a deeply embedded virus. The techie said something to the effect that he was going to load a newer version of XP, which I welcomed, and thought no more about it. Now, in trying to reinstall or install or whatever it is that I'm going to do, the XP disk comes up with an error message saying that I cannot install an earlier version of XP. I don't have a copy of the newer version the techie installed. My question is: is there a way to override the can't-install-older-version block and reinstall the original XP version I have on a legally-owned disk?

View 2 Replies View RelatedA while ago I posted on this group a question as to why the "C Drive" contents page opens whilst Windows Xp was booting up. The answer I was told was to do with SP2 and that a short trip round the registry would cure it. Well I did that, but the page still opened, so I thought I'd just have to live with it, but it is getting frustratingly annoying. It really slows everything down and it's the last thing to load up. Once that window opens I can then "use" the computer, as nothing will load until that opens.

I am going to replace the hard drive, it's time for that anyway. I have the old hard drive connected to another computer as a second drive. I can see the file structure on the drive, but I can't see the files and folders in My Documents for my old profile. How can I access those files adn copy them to the good drive?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI want to install a new primary hard drive and reinstall windows xp from scratch on the new c: drive. For the moment I would also like to retain the old disc contents and the xp operating system. To try to do this I installed a second hard drive and cloned the old drive c: to the new drive f:. I created a dual boot computer by editing my boot.ini file so I could boot from either the c: or f: drive. I replaced my primary hard drive with a new drive and booted up in the f: drive. Then I cloned the f: drive back to the new c: drive creating a dual boot system. My concern now is that if I reinstall windows xp on the newly installed hard drive, the Dell installation disk will wipe out the operating system and the contents on the f: drive. Is there any way to retain the old system? I'd appreciate any help with this.

Over the last week on this laptop i've had lockups and freezes.Thought i'd try using WinsockxpFix.I'd ran out of discs so just backed up everything important to My Docs.Downloaded and ran the fix and had the message to create a registry backup...then another message saying the directory to store a registry backup to didn't exist did i want to create it.i clicked yes and had the message that all the files could not be deleted.Didn't understand that so i just cancelled the fix and exited.Now My Docs are completely empty...everything has gone! they are not in the recycle bin either...have restored back to the earliest point i can but still My Docs folder is empty.Is there an app to recover these with...is there anything i can do...there's weeks of course work there.

View 11 Replies View RelatedI just installed WindowsXP SP3. After that I loose the access to the Documents and settings/username/ contents. The drawers are there (antivirus scanners parse them) but I can't navigate them neither in explorer neither with command dos emulation.
I obviously set all the check in window-options to see hidden files. I use Firefox but SP3 installed Explorer on my comp.
So I was installing windows xp on a dell 4300, I was basically done when suddenly the monitor went black and said it can't display the content (dell E207WFP anyways, I tried some other old 15" dell monitor lcd, same problem. I am repairing the installation now, but I have no idea how to fix the problem if I can't see the screen. I have other computers at my disposal, but since I have no idea how far along the setup is (it is close to done, I think just setting up the accounts left).

For example, I created a specific folder that for some reason no longer exists in My Documents. I have tried applications that allow me to "Undelete" what may have been sent to the Recycle Bin but these did not help. I am confident this folder and it's files are on the backup.bkf.I have also tried shareware backup applications, but they all seem to RESTORE corrupt files? Is there any application that would allow me to see what folders are on the backup.bkf? In running the Windows Backup Wizard, all I can see is a file called System State, but no option to expand the backup to see what files and folders exist.

The file transfer proceeded, however, after a couple of minutes a message appeared saying it couldn't move the folder as it was currently being used by another program. Contents of the menues may disappear partially. This is some kind of display problem. I know it not hardware becasue I have a dual boot of the same OS and this dosnt happen on the other partition. It sounds like a video card driver problem...but ive unistalled and re-installed the video driver and still problem persists.

hasn't been partitioned at any times. HOW i recovery some data from that disk? I try eg. GetDataBack NTFS and i see that there is right data, but how i recover it with out buy expensive license(~100EUR). I have a directory containing 4000 JPGs (no, clean JPGs before youask). Anytime I select a folder within this directory, it takes 30seconds to display either the thumbnail page, or about the same time tolookup the icon for each file in 'List details' mode.

It all started when a friend wanted me to format his external hard drive, so I copied all of his data on to one of my drives and formatted his disk using a utility that came with it (he wanted it as FAT32). Anyway, I did it kind of in a hurry and it seems that I also copied the "System Volume Information" and "Recycled" folder on his disk into a folder on my disk by accident. So now every time I want to enter the folder where I put this stuff, windows says that "the disk is not formatted" and asks me if I want to format it now. Also, and more importantly, the stuff in some of my other folders has "disappeared" and is not showing up in the windows explorer. The drive is being very slow when I try to access some folders but not with others and when the computer is idle it makes a continuous "click......click.......click..........click" sound, quite slowly. When I try to copy files from certain folders, I also get an error message saying "cyclic redundancy check" (I'm not sure if that is the exact translation - my version of winows is in French). Now I'm not sure exactly what the problem is here because prior to copying this data, my disk was fine.
View 2 Replies View RelatedMy computer was working fine w/out locking up. The only problem was that I couldn't figure out why my BIOS clock wasn't working. Finally after spending over $130 on a new XP w/SP3 disc and new hard drive I figured out I only needed the little $5.95 calculator battery. My hard drive was corrupt so I bought an 80gb. I installed brand the new XP o/s w/SP3 and it freezes frequently. I have all the same hardware as I had before. My previous 20gb hard drive had XP but it had been upgraded to SP3 (not bundled on one disc but it worked fine until I tried to reinstall windows big mistake).
I took out my USB PCI, and tried to reinstall but it still locks up. I haven't tried to install without my ethernet pci card but I will try it probably tonight or tomorrow. Not really sure what to do to fix it. I know its probably some conflict but I'm more of a user than a fixer. Also, my computer shows installed RAM 1000mb but my computer says only 383MB are available. I don't understand why. It should be moving much faster.
Upon leaving my last company I was given one of the older laptops (too old for anyone to care to use anymore), an IBM/Lenovo ThinkPad. The laptop was purchased with OEM licenses for Windows XP and Office. I have not reinstalled XP on this PC, and although I no longer can connect to my old company's domain, I have been continuing to use the PC by logging on to the domain, as I am not able to log onto the PC in any other way. This is, by the way, annoying for me, because I can access the internet but cannot access my other computers at home since they are not on the "company" domain and so I do not have permission to do so.Now the problem: This laptop is beginning to have some sort of problem, where applications like Firefox just suddenly freeze up and cannot be terminated, not even using Task Manager. I need to hardboot the machine each time as I cannot even shutdown in a normal fashion.
So how is the best way to a) fix this problem and b) get permission to log on to the machine "locally" and not on the company domain? One thing I am thinking about is just re-installing the computer, and I have the Windows XP license info on the label on the bottom of the laptop, and I suppose I can get the office license key using something like ProduKey. It would be nice to avoid having to do this, however, as I do not have the Lenovo CD's and would have to reinstall everything from the net. Any advice on what is best to do? How to find/fix the freezes of software like Yahoo and Firefox? How to get away from the company domain? I as user have admin priviledges to the PC but cannot, for example, touch the antivirus software and that is irritating.
I have two PCs with XP-Home on one and and W2K-SP4 on the other.I have acquired an old large-scale flat bed plotter that is driven by a specifically written Printer driver for Windows 3.1.Currently I am running this from an old 486-laptop running win3.1 but it is so slow (computer, not the plotter) and no network for file transfer. I tried win3.11 but the printer driver will not run correctly with win3.11 so it is back to win3.1.Is there anyway I can make XP or W2K use the w3.1 printer driver? I tried to install the driver in XP and W2K from the plotter disk but I get "there is no printer information in that location."
View 6 Replies View RelatedJust got a newer Dell computer with Windows XP but neither my scanner, OpticPro 3630P or my Iomega Zip 100 MB will work with XP. I 'chatted' with someone at the company sites but the Iomega fix wouldn't work and the OpticPro site tells me that the drivers they have for my scanner will not work with XP. In fact they say that it only works with Win95 but I had it working with win98.Now, before I got the new computer I backed up my old one on zip disks using the programs backup/restore system. Fortunately I also backed up my really important stuff separately. So, I have 12 zip disks I can't get into and a scanner that won't work. Has anyone any ideas as to how I might get them working with XP or if I get a new zip will it open the backedup disks?? Being a senior on a fixed income, buying new items after just saving enough for the computer will be difficult.
