Dec 2, 2004Gateway Solo 600 with 1GB memory and a 60GB drive with 15GB free space. Running WinXP at SP1, Norton AV 2003 but has just expired (2005 ready to install but don't want to compound things just jet), ZoneAlarm. The order of events, although it might not all be related:
Firewire disk drive it reported a handful of files that were not backed up due to a CRC error. I checked the Event Viewer and sure enough it had logged several "Bad Block" on hard disk errors. Ran Scandisk which reported that it couldn't fix. Booted from a Floppy and ran GWSCAN. Quick Test - No Errors Extended Test - Error 0223, Ran Scandisk, It reported some index entries removed due to errors. Deleted affected files and restored from good sources.System was slow to startup.Somewhat slow getting to the desktop Really slow loading the "Post Desktop" programs such as the network adapter icons, Volume Systray Control, Mouse Systray Control, Norton Systray icon Identify all the bad areas and their cause restore full functionality.

Aug 9, 2005I'm using Windows 2000 SP4.After a major meltdown and reformat I am resolved to implement a backup and restore plan.I have a basic set up I like - it rarely changes - of certain software and documents/files structure.Is there a way to completely backup a Windows 2000 installation - with full program, registry and file support - so that if need be it can be restored with one fell swoop?I have heard of Norton Ghost but some reviews I read on Version 9 have me a bit skeptical of trying it.

Dec 1, 2008My brother recently bought a new HP desktop PC so he wants to sell his old laptop (Compaq Presario 700, Windows XP Home Edition) and we both agreed we should do a full restore to completely wipe the hard drive clean to it's original slate and we have the original Compaq ''QuickRestore'' discs and for whatever reason, they're not working. There is three CD's and not a single scratch or mark on any of them. I've tried to run all three on the laptop and the only thing that happens is that the folder containing the discs files on it is what pops up and no actual setup occurs like it says on the little piece of paper that comes with the CD's.

Mar 18, 2007I have a fijitsu siemens PC running windows XP home (SP2), I have 2.4ghz CPU, 80G HD and 750 MB of memory. Whilst running for me as the administrator it is slowish but I can live with that. However, when my wife uses "switch user" her "section" once opened runs VERY slowly. Coupled to this when I switch back (even if she logs off) it crashes, I get a message when checking events that her part of the registry was still in use? Is there any way around this it is very irritating especaily her "section" running so blasted slowly

Jun 26, 2009I have windows xp And its running slow , i have just done a system restore, and its still running slow. I have just noticed that In windows task manager,in performance its saying that the cpu usage is 100% when i have nothing running.

Jun 7, 2010it takes forever to do anything. It's like it can only do one thing at a time its so slow. When I turn it on and log into my profile, it takes about 5 mins for it to load the desktop and about another 5 mins to load the antivirus software (Norton Security Suite 2010). The same goes for everything I do on this computer, it takes a while for the internet browser (IE 8 and FireFox), opening any program on this computer takes a while to load up. I have run Norton and it doesn't come up with anything. I have done a system restore a couple of times but it doesn't seem to help any

Mar 2, 2009I did a systeme restore, after it finished and restarted it came back to my explorer (desktop) and nothing loaded. I ctrl+alt+deleted and some things where running in the background.I "hard" restarted my computer and it still took me back to the blank explorer (desktop).I ran a new task and opened up firefox, when it poped up my desktop poped up and everthing in the task manager loaded but was very slow and nothing worked and it just froze. I then tried a different restore point and the same problem countinued.I then put in the windows repair disk and tried to fix the boot and still nothing. If I turn on the computer and put it into safe mode the desk top will load. But in normal mode it wont for a very long time and when it does it doesnt work.

For example, if I click on an application from the desktop it will sit there for 10-20 seconds before anything happens. Sep 15, 2006I was messing around with CCleaner and deleted something to do with an old version of McAfee (which isn't even on my computer anymore) from the registry. Yes, it was stupid to mess with the registry I guess because I failed to make the backup and now my computer won't boot. I get the blue screen that says there was an error 0x0000008e, or something like that.
I have tried using F8 and choosing the last known good configuration but it doesn't work. Also, I can boot into safe mode and I tried running a system restore but after it finished and I rebooted, it said that I couldn't restore from that point.I haven't really tried another restore because I am a little afraid to do anything. I don't want to risk losing access in safe mode because I need to be able to back up some of my files if in case I have to do a reformat.

Nov 4, 2006My computer had a turn yesterday and kept giving me the blue screen error on start-up, so using my windows disk I managed to run chkdsk. So I can get on now, but certain things won't run, like Media Centre, Firefox has forgotten my settings and also my iriver doesn't get acknowledged when I plug it into a USB port.So I am trying to run System restore to go back a couple of days.I can get into restore, and go through everything up to the point where you click 'next' in order to restore it.I click on next but nothing happens, it just stays there.

However, when I got to my profile a message window came up that said unable to restore to (chosen date/time) etc. I chose 3 other restore points over the last month, thinking it might be some recent problem, still a no go. I have 8.5 gig disk space and turning off RESTORE , rebooting and creating a new restore point did not solve the problem--the message remained the same. Other than reinstalling XP I am at a loss as to what to do. I do not have a need to restore at the moment but I may need to in the future.

I created the manual restore point back in March 2006. I cannot change the month and I have no idea where to find manual points.

Jul 28, 2009Im fully aware of why one would'nt be able to get Windows XP to use a full four gigabytes of memory but I thought I had taken the appropriate steps to remedy the problem. Im using the 64-bit version of Windows XP Pro and I've enabled memory hole remapping in my motherboards BIOS but for whatever reason windows is still telling me im only using around 3GB of memory. Oct 9, 2010I have an old Toshia Tecra laptop that suddenly refuses to run in full mode in XP professional. It will run in safe mode and I have tried to run anti virus etc with no problems. I have tried windows directory services restore mode. I have tried to restore a previous know working set of data. I have removed the ticks from all in startup but still the machine goes through showing the microsoft screen then goes blank and after a few minutes tries to start up again. I have noticed that when I shut down I get an end program screen of (End Program-- Sample), when clicked it says this program is not responding. I have looked through windows explorer under program files and can't see a program just called Sample.I am going into hospital shortly for a major op and wanted to use the laptop to look at DVD's to pass the time, so any help gratefully rec'd.

Aug 11, 2006A msg. popped up today saying my C: drive was full.I let it clean it up, but still only have just over 600 MB free out of 15 GB. Only 2.16 GB of this is programs as I have my programs installed on another drive. Looking in my Windows folder, I found 16.8 MB of log (text) files. Can these be removed? Can I turn off whatever is creating them?I downloaded Disk Size Manager after reading some other messages on this site. It says my C: drive is 12,815.60 MB which should be 15 GB. Where is the just over 2 GB that are missing? Windows uses 4,887.88 MB. Documents and Settings is 3,090.28.Is this normal?I wish I could move the programs to my D: drive, but I can't find a way. They are only available on my computer restoration disks and it puts them where it wants to instead of letting me decide where I want them. I tried running a free program called Move It!, but it looks like they are moving but they don't.

Oct 4, 2009I recently purchased an HP 8530w laptop that came with an xp from Vista downgrade preinstalled. I foolishly let Windows update automatically update the OS using the Express mode. It downloaded and installed SP3 and several .NET framework patches. The laptop also came with HP Credential Manager installed. The problem I'm encountering is that even though I logon under an administrator account I can't delete files under any of the USers under documents and settings, including the administrator acciunts Everytime I try to delete a cookie, or remove some documents (under My Documents) the file management program (Explorer or PowerDesk, I use both) pauses and then shuts down, and creates an error message to send to Microsoft. In short the system will allow the administrator to administrate. Can't uninstall SP3 because it doesn't show up in Add/Remove Programs, and can't delete any of the .NET framework updates even though they are listed.

Jun 15, 2005What would make a C: drive with only Win XP and nothing else on it fill up. It is a 10 GB drive. I installed XP Pro to it and everything else to different drives. The C: drive totally filled up and I couldn't seem to find anything to delete from it to make room. I did all the cleanup steps with no results. I have now reformatted it and am installing XP again, but would like to avoid this problem in the future if I can. Plan to use Fred Langa, of the Langa List, steps to lighten up XP, but not sure that will be enough since I don't know what caused the problem in the first place.
