i had been helped over in the security forum with some issues with my PC which have now been resolved thanks to Cybertech. Had asked him if he had any idea which OS would be better for my PC.My ISP which is AT&T no longer supports my OS which is 98SE.Without upgrading to another OS I cannot get any updates for the spyware or others they offer.We only have one PC presently and think that may be all we will have.We surf the net, the kids come over and play some games but that is really it nothing too intense.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI had been doing a lot of things to improve my computer's performance recently since my last system reboot (using the manufacturer's disk). I am aware that they say you should do that about once a year to clear your computer of junk files and keep it running quickly. However, I was scared to because BigFix no longer supports my unit. It seems that my fears have been made a reality since my computer is now very, very buggy.
By buggy, I mean that now while I can spend hours upon hours surfing the web, talking on Skype or playing a game without a problem, as soon as I talk on Skype and play a videogame together, my computer gives me a blue screen of death. And I want to know what the damage is because my computer never gave me these problems before.........
When trying to open any Word or Excel file, the program starts configuring Front Page Express. Since I do not have it installed, it results in an error and therefore opens Word/Excel in a blank page. Because of this, I have to always use File -> Open to open anything.

View 4 Replies View Relatedwhen I try to end them it takes an inordinately long time. Like two or more minutes. I bring up Task Manager, highlight the "not running " program and click "end task" which brings up another box that says "end program". But when I click this box nothing happens for at least a couple of minutes, quite often longer. I can repeat this process over and over and it makes no difference.
View 14 Replies View RelatedMy computer has really been running pretty slow at times. It also takes ALOT longer to restart compared to what it use to(<--like maybe approx. 3-4months ago). I know that my hard drive is in pretty decent health & I know my processor isnt going bad. I am pretty sure part of the problem(possibly a very large part) is that I have an aweful lot of processes running (from startup). I do know there are a few startup programs I do want to keep which are: Excite Email Notifier(however I dont need the chat or anything w/it), Winpatrol, AntiVir, & maybe 1or2 others. I have stopped all of the extras that I know arent necessary
View 4 Replies View RelatedWhen moving around on computer, not on net, the computer in general, everything has slowed down...making attachments, typing in Word, viewing programs list etc.I have done a clean up and defrag, have Norton, did all windows updates yesterday, what else should I do? Still have the problem.Could this be security related and maybe a bug, would that slow down whole computer not just internet? Should I run all scans and post a Log on security or here?

View 7 Replies View RelatedEnd 2005 I had a HD crash. Blamed it on the age, but replacing it with a new Seagate 240GB ATA wasn't smooth. Took me several attempts and chats with the PC store.Suddenly , without any clear reason, everything started working fine.until 3 weeks ago. After moving 30gb video files from a raid to that new 240GB , the new one was completely 'destroyed' (in a logical way, not physical). W2K's response : drive not formatted , would you like to format it now? I tried PC Inspector to recover my files, but since the drive was not 'accessible' the application couldn't do much. Then I did a quick format to get at least my logical structure back so PC Inspector could start working. Unfortunately it did for some %'s of the drive , but then crashed on me. Eventually I bought File Scavenger on line and via that application 1000's of family pictures could be saved. The bigger files (20 iso files of family DVD's) were lost though. So I formatted the 240GB drive, hunted the internet for updates of my BIOS etc.and now everything works fine. I think. But having 2 HD crashes in such a short time (I never had one in my 20 years of PC experience) seriously damaged my trust in my PC.

The front ports won't or can't accept my creative mu vu mp3 player.The message tells me to use a high speed port.I do use the front ports for my camera cord with no problem.My mp3 player works ok in the back ports but its inconvienient to crawl under the desk and plug into the back.Would it be advisable to buy a usb hub? Now all my task is missing the front two tabs. I should normally have 4 tabs (Task, Schedule, Settings and Security). Now I only have 2 tabs (Settings and Security). What can I do to enable the front two tabs again? Even newly created tabs have only the two tabs. The newly created task would still run, but I cannot update them anymore.

The icon appears on my desktop with the page title and all, but when I double click it, it just opens up my browser and loads about:blank.In the shortcut file's properties, and then gives me the file's size, location,etc.but it doesn't list the URL anywhere. It's just getting on my nerves having to copy a page's URL to a text file on my desktop if I want to remind myself of something.
