I was reformating my pc and when i clicked to delete a partition it said it was unable to delete it thus not being able to continue reformatting. I tried from windows explore and from my computer. I also tried to change to 32 bit partition. Can I do this with fdisk, if so how?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI bought a new computer.It appears to have been partitioned into a NTFS format and FAT32 format.The default drive for my documents & my pictures etc is the NTFS which I have been using happily. It is Media Centre Edition so I also have a few large files (>4GB) - though I dont keep them long term.NTFS partition has fulled up - but I cant move my large files to other partition to free up space
I've done a little bit of reading but my question is "Should I reformat the FAT32 to make it more of use to me?".I cant really see the need arising to access older OS files, except .JPG's (photo's I had on my old Windows ME Comp) or "Should I move all my smaller files (documents and photo's) to the FAT32 partition and use the NTFS drive for the bigger files?"
I recently switched back to XP after using Ubuntu for a couple years. I had no problems reformatting back to NTFS from XFS, no problems on install, but when I start up I have no sound, and no connection to the internet or to my other machine (which is also an XP machine).When I check the hardware my audio and ethernet come up yellow. I think the audio gives me a code 10 and the ethernet gives a code 28 (I could be wrong about the code 28 I didn't write it down). Now the really odd thing about this is that I put in my Ubuntu live CD and booted Ubuntu up, and right away I had audio and internet running straight from the live CD so I know the hardware must be good. I'm actually posting this from firefox running off of my live CD.I even tried installing a different ethernet card (the one I am using is integrated on the MOBO) and it recognizes it but won't let me get a connection.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI had perfectly working PC with XP Pro installed on a 160Gb Maxtor HDD.For no reason I error checked the hard drive, which the system did after rebooting, at the end of the test the system rebooted and announced that there was a error on the boot and boot.ini.Useing XP Emergency (on disk) I tried fixmbr which did nothing then I tried Fixboot. XP found the drive identified it as FAT and said that it was successfully fixed.The drive was FAT and is now unusable.Partition Magic sees it as a FAT drive as does XP when I switched the HDD into another machine.

With W98/W95B you could easily use a tool to convert FAT16 to FAT32 from within windows and not lose the data (most of the time anyhow) that was on that drive/partition.Is there any tool to convert FAT32 to NTFS without wiping (formatting) the drive/partition? I haven't been able to locate any tools to do this with and so far have been moving/copying the data I want to save on a partition to another partition and then right clicking the partition I want to convert and choosing FORMAT to NTFS instead.

I successfully restored this machine to it its original state, adding drivers etc from a third CD-ROM. I also, for the purposes of learning, restored it to a full installation using the hidden partition which appears to be located on C: drive After doing this I converted to NTFS.

The saving factor is that the partition that may have formatted was only 20GB out of 200GB and the rest was unallocated free space. I have installed a temporary instance of WinXP to use data recovery software and recover the majority of files from the drive (it is installed on the non-corrupted

Did something really stupid the other day. Was doing a Windows install and I mistook a drive for a different drive.In short, I deleted the partition, recreated the partition, but I haven't reformatted yet. The partition was the same size before and after so that shouldn't be a problem. the files should still be there but I don't know how to get at them. I've already tried Recuva, UndeletePlus, Restoration, and a Knoppix boot disk but none of these were able to do anything because of the lack of a file system/boot sector.

Basically, new computer, setup windows XP on a 470GB drive, 75GB for the system, with the rest split into two. Due to an internal card reader, XP ended up as the H: Due to a problem when installingsome software, i attempted to change the system drive letter back to C: through the registry. Big mistake. long and the short of it is windows would no longerboot up. At this point, booting to the windows xp setup, the only partition which showed was a 130GB unused partition. Now, all i want to do is make the drive factory fresh. I can make the partitions work within windows (with this dodgy HD as a slave drive) and delete/create partitions etc. However, no matter ho much i format/delete/create partitions, when i load the windows XP setup, it only ever sees the 130GB partition. i tried using the command diskpart> clean to no avail, i thought it would wipe it out, Can anyone advise me how to lose what ever config is stillon that hard drive and have it back abe to be partitioned/formatted etc within the windows setup CD
View 7 Replies View RelatedOkay, I just got done doing a fresh install of XP on my master hard drive. The master is small, about 40GB. All my important stuff is on the slave, a 160GB HD. Until tonight, I was using the bigger HD as the primary one, and the master as a small backup drive. I partitioned the larger drive into several bits, five total.
After XP got done installing, I thought I'd merge two of the smaller logical drives on the slave into one, I didn't need them. I used computer management in administrative tools to delete the two uneeded logical drives.That was a big mistake. It merged all the logical drives into one. I need the information on the last two partitions. Need being the word. I downloaded a trial diagnostic tool, and to my joy, it found all the most important data still on the FAT32 partition. However, being a trial tool, I could not retrieve the data, I could only look at it.
A while back i installed Linux SUSE on my computer with a grub loader on boot up to choose which OS to start up. I've grown tired of SUSE and i'm running out of space on my hard drive so i'm looking on deleting the partition. Last time i tried it the GRUB loader didn't know what the hell happened so I couldn't boot up at all. So how do i remove the partition in Xp ? I wanted to nuke the while disk to make sure all my confidential information had gone, using DBAN, but I couldn't get it to create a disk, so instead I'm deleting the partitions on my computer, formatting them, then erasing them using Heidi's Eraser (35 passes).
I had two partitions: a C and D drive. I installed two OS's on the C drive, and I deleted the D partition, and created a new one which became F. i then erased F, so that anything that was on the previous D had been completely cleaned. I then put on a copy of XP on F. So, when I start up my computer, I use the OS which is logged on F. Can i delete the C partition now, which has two OS's on it, whilst I'm using the OS on F? I want to do that, create a new partition, and then erase it 35 passes.
Can someone please help me with reformating my windows. i dont have the original windows cd because this computer was given to me and there is nothing that i want on there.

However on partitioning and formating this HD (using Win 98 / SE,FDISK.Exe file), the total space available is only 78,109,888 bytes (split in to 3 parts). On another computer, made by a different company and with almost similar configuration, I have a Maxtor brand 80 GB HD and on partitioning and formatting, it had 80, 009, 888 bytes available (that is 1.9 GB more)This HD also has 3 partitions.It seems the HP's Samsung HD has a hidden partition. I tried to find it with FDSIK.EXE and also with Partition Magic (version 8.2) and Partition Manager (version 5.5), but was unsuccessful.Is there any other Partition related software, which can show a hidden partition and also be able to delete the same (without damaging the C~ partition)?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI copied my data files to my external Maxtor hard disk before I tried to reformat my internal hard drive and reload Win XP. However during my partition, I didn't realize I still had the external drive (160GB) plugged in and it showed up at the top of the list and the original internal (80GB) below it. So, I followed the instruction mistakenly and went through the process of deleting the partition(on the external hard drive) and tried to partition it into two drives. Then I got an error message as I continue to try to format the hard drive "Your computer's startup program cannot gain access to the disk containing the partition or free free space you choose . Set up cannot install Window XP on this hard disk." I stopped, reboot and tried to go through the delete partition several times with the same error message. After several attempts, I realized that the external hard drive was still plugged in.
So I unplugged the external hard drive and reboot to go through the process of reformatting and partition the internal hard drive into C drive and E drive and loaded Win XP. Now even though I plugged in the hard.After I installed the external hard drive's
software,driver and restarted the computer, I connected the external hard drive and don't see the drive in my computer. I could find it under Control Panel/System/Device Manager/Disk drives but it doesn't show up as an external hard drive under "My computer" with a drive letter. Under the disk management, I see the drive as Disk1 but it was unallocated. Did I lose all my data due to the delete of partition? Can I recover my data and drive ?
A friend gave me her Compac Presario 2100 to wipe clean to be sold.I reformatted the hard drive and now the computer will not boot. The machine runs for about 15 seconds and dies. Running XP Home.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a laptop that I just got my hands on, it's a Dell Inspiron 8200, has windows XP Pro (service pack 2) on it. I need to reformat it, however, the cd drive doesnt really work anymore (this is the second cd drive its had). I would rather not spend money on a cd drive or anything, and was wondering if there was anyway to use a boot disk to format it, then if there was any way to install network drivers and use a network to install windows. That at least is my present theory of how to go about this, but I'm not sure if it's even possible, and I'm searching around online right now.
